Welcome parents new to Farragut and welcome back familiar faces! Can I ask the obvious? Where did summer go? How can school be starting already?? That said, here we are, back in school.
I thought it would be a good idea to dedicate the first issue of the school year to information about Farragut Elementary – lots and lots of information. I’m hoping, in fact, that you hold onto this issue and refer to it throughout the school year.
But, first here’s some unfinished business from last year. We are very proud of our outstanding students!

Farragut Elementary’s biggest outdoor family and community event is almost here! Fall
Festival is quickly approaching! Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 22nd from 11am to 4pm in the green space behind the school. Again this year, we will have our arts and crafts vendors selling their handmade items. Many of these vendors are Farragut parents so bring your pocketbooks and wallets and shop and support these crafty folks!
This fabulously fun-for-the-whole-family carnival is all run by Parent Volunteers. We'd love to see new along with familiar faces join in to help make this an awesome day for our kids and profitable for the school. Invite friends and neighbors to join in the fun.
We only hold two large event fundraisers a year – Fall Festival and Artworks!. So it is important that this event, in addition to being fun, must be a good money-maker. So purchase your tickets, eat lunch at the Festival, and shop the vendors!!! All the profits go back to the kids!
Pre-sale tickets will be available in the front of the school before school and after school starting Monday, October 17 - 21. In addition to purchasing advanced tickets you will also be able to make early purchases on the new Fall Festival t-shirts. A new design has been created for this year’s Festival. Again, we’ll have boy/men and girl/women style shirts for sale. They will also be available for purchase during the Festival. Advanced tickets will save you money. Tickets are more the day of the event.
All of the classrooms will have a booth again, plus the ever popular 5th
grade Cake Walk, and the Chili and Pie Cook-off and the Bake Sale booths.

How are the Arts paid for at Farragut?
The programs offered during classroom time, are paid for by extensive parent-based fundraising efforts and grants through the District and private foundations. Each year we (the parents) raise enough funds through Artworks! to provide students with Visual Arts instruction by our part-time Artist-in-Residence, Janet Siegel. Mrs. Siegel teaches bi-weekly 45 minute art classes to children in all grades levels. Students experience different visual arts mediums and explore their own creative potential. We also fund a large portion of Performing Arts programs at the school as well. For the last two years, with the additional generous funding from The Fineshriber Foundation and The Culver City Education Foundation we were able to double the school’s Performance Arts programming to meet the second level of California’s Visual and Performing Arts Content Standards. Now, children in each grade level (K-5) receive music education in partnership with organizations such as Do-Re-Mi, Symphonic Jazz Orchestra, L.A. Opera, and the Music Center which is part of the Performing Arts Center of L.A. County.
How Can Parents Help? To help us maintain these programs and launch a theater arts program in the near future we ask parents to volunteer their time and talents by joining our Artworks! 2012 fundraising team. If there are any services you would be able to contribute, or items for auction you could solicit, please let us know. Or you may make a direct monetary donation for Arts programming at the school through Farragut's booster club- Fan Club. Last but not least, please support your child's efforts by volunteering in the art room, attending the Artworks! Community Arts Day student art exhibition or the Artworks! Gala and by attending concerts throughout the

Principal’s Corner…. Dear Farragut Families,
Welcome to the 2011 – 2012 school year!
As the new principal of our school, I am very
thrilled to welcome all the returning and new
families of the Farragut community. I hope
your summer vacation was filled with
excitement, adventures, and relaxation. I
am truly fortunate to be continuing my
service at our school that is known for its
hard working staff, highly involved group of
parents, and very motivated students.
Working collaboratively together, we will
ensure continual improvement at our site so
that we can keep on providing a challenging,
rewarding, and meaningful learning
experience for our children. To keep abreast
of the innovations in education, the teachers
and I have been participating in on-going
professional development through the
district and as partners with artists from the
Music Center.
To extend learning opportunities, many of
our students have been taking advantage of
the SuccessMaker software generously
purchased by our Fan Club for use at home
this summer. And to make our school year
just as memorable as the last, our parents
and teachers have been preparing diligently
this summer. Indeed, it will take all of us
working together to realize what we have set
out to accomplish for our children.
I strongly believe in the importance of each
family’s contribution in sustaining the
success of our school. I know you can all
make a difference by sharing your time,
financial resources, or expertise and by
promoting our school to the community at
large.
Recently, I read somewhere that parent
involvement in a child’s education is like
frosting on a cupcake - it makes it complete
and oh, so sweet. I agree, wholeheartedly.

Steve Levin’s Corner, Fan Club President…. Hello Everyone,
After a one-of-a-kind summer, my family and I are ready to return to Farragut. We all want to catch up with
friends we haven't seen for a couple of months, and we're looking forward to meeting some new Farragut
families as well. I want to thank everyone who contributed to the last-minute fundraising campaign for
SuccessMaker-at-Home in June, and I'm hoping to hear lots of stories about how the kids used it over the
summer. It was also great to see so many Farragut parents at the wine tasting fundraiser on August 27. I think
we all had fun, and I know the money we raised will benefit our kids. Thank you to everyone who contributed,
and thank you from all of us to Kimberly Wong and Sam Leonard, who hosted the event. Kimberly and Sam
have already volunteered to do it again next year!
See you at school, and at the Fan Club meeting on September 13!

FAAST PROGRAMS & SHOWCASES
This is our afterschool enrichment program. Registration will start the week after school starts. Classes are held right after school and students going onto after care for the remainder of the day are taken to their respective places by FAAST supervisors or their afterschool
program staff.
The students’ accomplishments are celebrated with a
school-wide showcase for family & friends to attend.

MUSIC
All Kindergarten students receive in-class weekly music appreciation and enrichment through our music residency program with Do-Re-Mi, for more information check out their website at doremimusicschool.com. All Kindergarten and 1st graders also participated in a 5 week series of workshops with We Tell Stories this past school year. Visit wetellstories.org for more information.
All 1st-2nd graders receive weekly music instruction through the Symphonic Jazz
Orchestra (SJO) organization's music residencies programming:
SJO's 1st grade residency program introduces students to music theory, singing, and solfege, as they learn to master the playing of bells. Throughout the 28-week program, the students perform simple Americana songs as well as pieces by Beethoven and Mozart.
SJO's 2nd grade residency program, largely built on the National Endowment for the Arts "Jazz in the Schools" curriculum, introduces students to both classical and jazz history, music theory, solfege, famous composers, and the families of the orchestra. Throughout the 28-week program, the students also compose blues songs that are performed by members of the orchestra at a special final assembly.
All 3rd grade students learn to play the Recorder, and receive weekly instruction with the District's Music/Band teacher. In addition to actually learning to play an instrument, SJO
conducts specialized 3rd grade instrumental workshops, which include mini-concerts by three ensembles from within the Symphonic Jazz Orchestra - a string quartet, brass quintet and woodwind quintet. Following each of the presentations, all of the students then get to play the instruments they just heard - including flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, violin and cello. This launches them into the school's band and orchestra program in 4th grade.
4th and 5th grade students have the opportunity to join the school's band or orchestra
program. It is a pull-out program taught by the District's Band and Orchestra teacher. In addition to possibly joining band, for the past three years all 4th grade students participated in L.A. Opera's Elementary School Opera Program. The program is a five week
performance residency program where students participate in a professional opera experience with sets, lighting and a stage crew provided by L.A. Opera when they perform for the school alongside L.A. Opera artists. Through engaging and lively weekly workshops, L.A. Opera artists teach students their roles as chorus members in The Prospector, a charming gold rush opera by Lee Holdridge and Richard Sparks based on Puccini's The Girl of the Golden West. Hopefully we will be able to offer this program to future 4th grade classes. It is a very popular program and needs to be shared throughout the Los Angeles area...fingers crossed!
All 5th grade students participate in a 10 week workshop through the Music Center's Short-Term Artist Residencies Program. The program is designed to complement a curricular goal or central theme using a series of standards-based sequential arts experiences.
COMPUTER LAB
Farragut Elementary has a state-of-the-art computer lab on campus. There is a lab assistant at all times that students are in the lab (salaries paid by Fan Club). The students are in the lab with their classroom once a week. We have the premiere educational software, SuccessMaker, installed on all computers. SuccessMaker is a computer program, paid for by Farragut families. SuccessMaker allows children to learn math, reading, and language skills at their own pace. SuccessMaker provides enrichment, grade-level practice, or intervention, depending on what is needed. Most students at Farragut use SuccessMaker at least once per week. Extra sessions are available before and after school (speak with the principal regarding before and after school programs). Fan Club has also purchased multiple licenses to allow families to install SuccessMaker on their computers at home for student use.
PTA
The PTA (Parent Teacher Organization) is a formal organization composed of parents, teachers and staff that is intended to facilitate parental participation in a public or private school. At the local level, the goal of all parent-teacher groups is to support their schools, encourage parent involvement, support teachers, and organize family events. The cost to join the Farragut PTA is $6.50 per person. You must be a member to have voting status but non-members can also attend PTA meetings and participate in meeting discussions. Membership must be renewed each school year. A majority of this membership fee goes directly to the National PTA organization to fund work done, in the interest of all schools, at that level. President for the 2011-2012 school year. Unless otherwise scheduled, meetings are at 6:30p-8p every 3
rd Tuesday of the month in the
school library. Childcare & pizza are provided free of charge. PTA/Fan Club meetings are held one after the other on the same evenings.

Throughout the school year, a wide range of PTA funded assemblies are given to all grade levels. Many center on the Performing Arts. We Tell Stories, SJO, L.A. Opera, and Brazil- Brazil are among the great organizations that have delighted our students!
SCIENCE FAIR
Held in the spring, students in grades 4&5 are required to turn in a science project. Grades K-3 is optional. On
Family Night, the projects are on display for viewing and prizes are awarded.
ARTWORKS!
Artworks! is Farragut Fan Club's main annual arts fundraiser. It began as a single event 9 years ago in response to the District not having adequate funds available to begin a comprehensive arts program. Over the last several years Artworks! has grown and due to the popularity of the event, it was reformatted last year and separated into three parts. This year’s tentative schedule is:
(1) Community Arts Day, Saturday, April 14, 2012: Families will bring their
children to Farragut to celebrate the visual and performing arts through workshops, performances and a silent auction. There is also a student art exhibit. All Students will choose a work of art they created in art class and write a paragraph on why they chose it as their favorite piece. Last year we had 524 pieces of art on display!
(2) On line Auction, opens Sunday April 15 and ends on the following Sunday April 22, 2012. Last year we
had over 200 items available for bidding! Invite friends, co-workers and family to bid to help fund our Arts programs!
(3) Artworks! Gala, Saturday evening, April 21, 2012: Last year we held this amazing event at Royal/T Artspace in Culver City. This sophisticated evening event was attended by 200 parents and community members. Gourmet cocktails, appetizers, dinner and full bakery of desserts were served. The evening also included a silent and live auction and after-party disco.

FAN CLUB Fan Club is the parent fundraising organization at
Farragut. Other schools may call this
organization their „booster club. We are a non-
profit organization. The monies you donate to
the Fan Club can be listed under “charitable
contributions” at tax time. All decisions about
which programs receive Fan Club/PTA funds are
decided by the parents that attend the monthly
meetings. Steve Levin is President of the Fan
Club for the 2011-2012 school year. Unless
otherwise scheduled, meetings are at 6:30p-8p
every 3rd Tuesday of the month in the school
library. Childcare & pizza are provided free of
charge. All Farragut parents are automatically
members of the Fan Club. There is no cost to
join. Keep up on news at the Fan Club website.
REFLECTIONS This is a state-wide PTA sponsored student competition where student’s can show their talents in a variety of artistic ways – including writing, dance, & music. Farragut always has a record number of entries and our students have walked away with many honors at the local, district, and state levels.

FARRAGUT FAMILIES School Families is a program that is unique to Farragut
Elementary. Several times a year students meet with
their “Families”. These Families consist of
kindergarten through fifth grade students and these
students stay together as long as they attend Farragut
Elementary. The goal is to establish relationships
across grade levels and to provide opportunities for
older students to mentor younger students. Each
session is focused on the Six Pillars of Character
Program; students meet with their adult leader to
discuss various topics, share ideas, do activities, or
perform school services based on the trait of the
month. This program fits in nicely with our newest
curriculum “Caring School Communities”. The
“Caring School Communities” focuses on building
connections, empathy, and caring for others.
The Family experience culminates in the spring with
Family Sports Day (a fun parent volunteer
opportunity).
BELLS AND CHOIR Grades 3-5. Mrs. Eskridge is a 1st grade teacher at the school, and has graciously volunteered her time and talents to create an amazing bells program for Farragut students. Grades 1-5. Once again, Mrs. Eskridge a 1st grade teacher at Farragut, volunteers her time and talent to lead the school's choir program.

ASSEMBLIES
The first Monday of the month the students meet in the play yard. They go straight to the black top instead of stopping at their classrooms. Parents are invited. School news, announcements, and student awards are given at this time.
BOOK FAIR The Book Fair raises money to help the Farragut PTA pay for library and home reading books, plus other school supplies. Book Fair visits are a great way for students to get excited about reading new books and also donating books to their teachers and their library. Scholastic provides an array of books for all ages- including adults - and all interests. The theme for this fall is "Book Fair-Reading is out of this World!” Book Fair is held in the Farragut Library Monday, Sept 19th through Friday, Sept 23rd. The hours are 8:45am-3:30 pm M/T/Th/F and 8:45-2:00pm on Wed. We will also be open for Back To School Night so that you can shop before or after you visit your child's classroom (although this is the busiest time at the Book Fair). The kids love it, the parents love it, and so do the teachers. If you are interested in volunteering with the Book Fair in some way I welcome the help! Just drop me an email at [email protected] and I will set you up to help with the first fun filled event of the school year!!! Thanks again to all the parents who helped last year. ART PROGRAM During school hours and in the classroom:
Kindergarten through 5th grade
classes are on a rotating bi-weekly schedule to get Visual Arts instruction from our Artist-In-Residence Mrs. Janet Siegel in the Art Room (#8). See the expanded explanation of what the kids will focus on in the coming year later in this issue. The art program is integrated into classroom learning and the art teacher works closely with the classroom teachers so there is support throughout the curriculum.

5TH GRADE
ACTIVITIES 5th Grade Activities is all about making their last year at Farragut a memorable one for our kids. We hold fundraising events to cover the costs of special field trips and events that occur throughout the year. Best of all we do fundraising to cover the cost of the big end-of year party! Everyone is welcome and encouraged to be a part of the effort (you too will have a 5th grader someday). We'll be starting the year selling the ever-popular Chico Bags. We have a fundraiser lined up at Menchie's (everyone's favorite, yum!) and we'll be running the concessions at Movie Nights. Please plan to join us. It's fun! COMMUNITY GARDEN
The Farragut Community Garden is located adjacent to the play area next to the school. Parent volunteers keep the garden tended and students are encouraged to help plant and maintain their room’s garden spaces.
STUDENT ABSENTEEISM
Absenteeism can be very costly for the school. Monies are allotted based on the number of students in attendance. Taking a family trip is not an excused absence in California. We must abide by the Ed. Code. It is each parent’s responsibility to report the reason for their child’s absence when the child returns to school. If you plan to be gone five to ten days you can have your child legally excused by completing an independent study form. You MUST notify the teacher and the attendance clerk, at least two weeks in advance, so the teacher has time to prepare your child’s work assignments and for the forms to be approved by the principal. Some Districts have lost millions of dollars when auditors find that they aren’t complying with state attendance laws. Each classroom teacher and the principal must sign a form monthly stating that we are in compliance with attendance laws.
ROOM PARENTS
Each classroom will have a designated Room
Parent. This person keeps parents involved in
what the classroom is doing and coordinates
volunteers for classroom projects, trips, and
other events.
HSA AWARDS
Usually held in March, this luncheon is held to thank and honor parents, staff, and administrators who have volunteered above and beyond for the betterment of the school and the students. The amazing strength and selflessness of our volunteers is one of biggest assets we have at Farragut.
SITE COUNCIL
California requires schools to have a School Site
Council (SSC) consisting
of the principal, teachers, and elected parents who
are responsible for the preparation and review of
the Single Plan for Student Achievement and the
School Safety Plan.
Meetings are open to the public.
Parents are elected to two-
year terms. We elect parents to the council
annually at Back to School
Night.
This is also an opportunity to learn about the
continuing education that is offered to all of the
teachers through the
district, how assessment data is used to identify
children who need added support, and the
interventions that are initiated to assist them.
All who are interested in the School Site Council are
encouraged to submit their names to the principal for
the election this fall.

SCHOOL-DAY SCHEDULE School starts at 8:45am M-F. Doors open at 8:35am. School dismisses at 3:15pm M,T,Th,F. School dismisses at 1:45pm on Wednesdays. K-3 goes to the library once a week/4-5 once every other week. Each class goes to the computer lab once a week. Each class goes to art class once every two weeks for 45 min.
TEACHER APPRECIATION
Farragut teachers are held in high regard.
Therefore, we have Teacher Appreciation
Week April 30-May 4.
During this week, each grade sponsors a
teacher breakfast and the PTA will host a
teacher luncheon on May 4. These events are
really nice volunteer opportunities.

Annual Donations Hopefully, the information in this newsletter has provided you with some understanding and appreciation for the hard work, commitment, and dollars it takes to keep our school the premiere Arts & Technology Campus in the Culver City USD. In addition to your volunteer time and any additional help you provide to the school, we count very much on the $250 per student annual voluntary donations. A letter and donation forms will soon go out in student backpacks. If you cannot give the whole $250, please give what you can. This donation provides a majority of the funds for all programs Fan Club is committed to continuing – programs to enhance your child’s education and experience at Farragut. Remember, most financial contributions are tax deductible and participation is voluntary.

as well as miscellaneous family purchases.
AND, keep in mind that with the eScrip

supporting your worthwhile programs.

Go to goodsearch.com when you need to search the web, designate Farragut Fan Club, and every time you search or shop the internet using their search engine, they make a donation. It costs you nothing and the school benefits. BOXTOPS: Save & turn in box tops to the box in the office. Farragut makes 10 cents per square of free money!

This is a really important fundraiser for our school!
STUDENT COUNCIL
Near the start of school, 3rd, 4th, and 5th
grade classrooms each select 3
representatives. The students in 3rd-5th
grades vote for the president and all officers.
The students who run for student council
each give a speech to all the students and
then each class receives ballots and votes in
their class.
The Student Council focuses on running
Spirit Days and earning money to purchase
balls and jump ropes for the playground.
They are also involved in service projects,
such as monthly food drives, Christmas gifts
for the families at Family Place, and act as
Hall Monitors during lunchtime.
They meet the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays at 8am.
Any student is allowed to attend Student
Council meetings. Agendas include spirit
days, any problems around school and ways
they can help.
Mrs. Eskridge (1st grade teacher) is the adult
supervisor.
Drop the kids off and

Back To School coffee
in the school library.
