Submitted at 4/30/2010 7:31:20 PM Much can be said about the Twitter development community. Since day one, they have been building functionality on top of Twitter’s minimal web features to better the overall Twitter experience. Initially we saw a frenzy of desktop and browser-based add-ons. Then, just as smartphones were becoming ubiquitous, the demand and interest in mobile Twitter applications became so high that application makers could not release updates fast enough. As Twitter works to round out their portfolio of official applications — something we witnessed with release of the Blackberry app, acquisition of Tweetie and now the birth of Twitter for Android— developers building applications for Twitter are being eclipsed by the company that started it all. Suddenly third-party seems to be no party at all. Fee Free or Die Android Market, Blackberry App World and the App Store: Query each of them and you’ll find a bevy of Twitter apps. Next, judge the quality of the free apps against the quality of the paid apps. The trend has always been that the best Twitter apps come with a price tag. It’s not just mobile either; some of the best Mac-only Twitter apps come with a surcharge. More often than not, they’re better and more reliable than their free counterparts. Enter Twitter. Things are about to change. The BlackBerry app is free. The iPhone and iPad app will be free. The Android app is free. There’s a trend here, one that’s likely to be repeated when (I believe it’s only a matter of time) Twitter releases a desktop application. Unofficial apps with fees don’t stand much of chance (power users aside), even those with feature sets that are arguably better than Twitter’s offering. The official stamp of approval from Twitter will be more than enough for the average Twitter user. Twitter, Features and the Cross- Platform War In the midst of the Twitter application frenzy, we saw the best application makers rise up and compete head-to-head. TweetDeck versus Seesmic. Tweetie versus Twitterific. And then a funny thing started happening. Singular platform was no longer good enough. Both TweetDeck and Seesmic created a new layer specific to each of their applications, so that you could login to your TweetDeck or Seesmic account regardless of platform and maintain your Twitter settings. The feature back-and-forth continued, but the new battle became cross-platform. Not many expected Twitter to become a contender in the cross- platform battle and yet here they are, putting on their boxing gloves and entering the ring as crowds cheer and developers moan. If Twitter is everywhere, where can developers thrive? Perhaps the answer lies not in where, but how. Features will continue to be an important battle ground for third- parties — look no further than HootSuite or CoTweet for proof. Still, gone are the days when a third- party Twitter app is newsworthy or relevant on its own. Now is the time to show me the metadata. Better yet, make Twitter a small part of something more significant — something larger. And no, a dual Twitter-Facebook client is not something grander. Twitter’s Biggest Loser: Seesmic Seesmic began as a video service. After the acquisition of Twhirl however, Seesmic phased out video in favor of Twitter. Now Seesmic offers web, desktop and mobile apps (Android and BlackBerry with iPhone in the works). All of the apps are robust, some offer Facebook integration and each take an “update once, publish everywhere” mentality thanks to the Ping.fm acquisition. But what does Seesmic do that Twitter doesn’t? The world is aware of Twitter, but even Twitter is having a hard enough time driving home a value proposition. With that in mind, and Seesmic merely being a Twitter afterthought, does Seesmic even stand a chance? Especially given the hundreds of other Twitter application challengers. Let’s face it: competition is a good thing. I happen to love Echofon for Mac, so too does my much younger fellow Twitter addict Justin Beiber. Ashton Kutcher tweets with Brizzly. Ellen and Lady Gaga tweet from the web. Shaq is a TweetGenius user. Great. The plethora of available Twitter apps reward personal preference. There’s no reason why hobby Twitter app developers can’t continue to make a fair enough return with small fees or in-app ads. But Seesmic, as a heavily-funded startup ($12 million in total), has tied its yolk to Twitter and Twitter is trying to break free. To that effect, Seesmic founder Loic Le Meur argues that, “Twitter official apps will always be about Twitter only. Seesmic apps are about helping you stay in touch with the news in realtime, your friends and build your brand across social networks which is very different, we don’t compete with them, we are on the user side who really doesn’t want to keep switching apps all the time.” We’re not convinced. Facebook has a phenomenal iPhone app and Twitter’s Tweetie is also quite marvelous. We have a sneaking suspicion that users will opt for brand affinity and simplicity over anything else. Apple and Google are pushing it big time, and now so is Microsoft. When Internet Explorer 9 comes out, it will support HTML5 and help make it more common across the Web. “The future of the web is HTML5,” writes Dean Hachamovitch, the general manager for IE at Microsoft in a blog post talking about Web video. Microsoft still supports Flash as well, but HTML5 and Flash are at loggerheads. By throwing its weight behind HTML5, Microsoft giving Website designers one more reason to abandon Flash. The post specifically talks about Microsoft’s plans to support only the H.264 codec for HTML5 video. Again, Flash players now support H.264 also. But the more H.264 video is out there, the less need there will be for Flash players because those videos can play directly in an HTML5 browser, such as IE9, Safari, or Chrome. And, as Apple CEO Steve Jobs discussed in his we-don’t-need-no- stinkin’-Flash rant yesterday, H.264 is much more mobile-friendly: To achieve long battery life when playing video, mobile devices must decode the video in hardware; decoding it in software uses too much power. Many of the chips used in modern mobile devices contain a decoder called H.264 – an industry standard that is used in every Blu-ray DVD player and has been adopted by Apple, Google (YouTube), Vimeo, Netflix and many other companies. Although Flash has recently added support for H.264, the video on almost all Flash websites currently requires an older generation decoder that is not implemented in mobile chips and must be run in software. The difference is striking: on an iPhone, for example, H.264 videos play for up to 10 hours, while videos decoded in software play for less than 5 hours before the battery is fully drained. Hachamovitch is more diplomatic. He also notes that “Flash does have some issues, particularly around reliability, security, and performance.” Nevertheless, he adds that too many consumers rely on Flash, so Microsoft will continue to work with Adobe to make it better. And if it doesn’t get better, . . . well, by that time HTML5 will be more widely distributed on sites across the Web. Microsoft and Apple and Google will make sure of that. LinkedIn Platform: now with more ways toauthenticate(The LinkedIn Blog)Submitted at 4/29/2010 1:38:21 PM

Code Alert! This is a part of ourcontinuing series on Developers atLinkedIn, syndicated from ourDeveloper blog. If this isn’t your cupof code, check back tomorrow forregular LinkedIn programming. In themeanwhile, check out some of ourrecent feature announcements, tipsand tricks, or success stories. Would you like your site to “Loginwith LinkedIn” on your site?  It’snow possible! Last week we deployed an importantupgrade to our OAuth infrastructureat LinkedIn that makes life easier forour LinkedIn Developers andMembers.  The authorization andlogin process has been streamlinedespecially for developers that want touse LinkedIn as a sign-in service.LinkedIn members will find a easier, simpler way to quickly authorizeLinkedIn applications. Read on for all the technical details.Authentication: Login with LinkedIn For sites that primarily use LinkedInfor authentication (e.g. by showingusers a “Login with LinkedIn”button), we now offer an alternativeto the normal OAuth authorizationf l o w :https://www.linkedin.com/uas/oauth/authenticate

This authenticate endpoint functionsidentically to the authorizationendpoint except for one scenario. When the following conditions are alltrue we will automatically (andimmediately) redirect to yourApplicat ion.• The current user is logged intoLinkedIn.• The current user has previouslygranted access to the requestingapplication.• The access token has not expired.

This provides a great user experience– just a one click login! If any of theabove conditions are not true, themember wi l l s ee the normalauthorization flow. Login Buttons To provide a consistent userexperience across s i tes whichleverage LinkedIn for authentication,we created four standard buttons. Please use them so that your users(and our users) benefit from afamiliar LinkedIn experience acrossthe web. User Interface Changes If you already have your ownaccount infrastructure, we’re stilllooking out for you. We often seesites send already-authorized usersthrough our OAuth authorize flow. Perhaps the remote site lost the tokenor never persisted it. This situationresults in users being asked for

username/passwords again and again, with a new token created every time(a frustrating process, to be sure). So, we’ve made some improvementshere.  Instead of requiring the user tologin every time and create a newaccess token, we now allow the userto reuse an existing access token andquickly return to the site.  In mostcases the user simply needs to click‘Continue’ and they are back at yoursite immediately. As part of this streamlining process(and to leverage cookie persistence),we changed the OAuth authorizationurl to live on the www subdomain ofl i n k e d i n . c o m :https://www.linkedin.com/uas/oauth/authorize We recommend that all developersswitch to this as soon as possible.  Tohe lp you au toconf igure yourapplication we also return the currentauthorization URL as part of therequestToken response as thexoauth_requesrt_auth_url parameter.Clicking on Cancel We also changedthe behavior when the user pressesthe Cancel button in the authorizationflow.  In prior releases we alwayssent the user to a single “IntegrationURL” defined for each application. We now offer the option to redirectto the OAuth callback URL, justleave your Integration URL blank. Your callback will not  be called

with a token or secret.  Instead yourca l lback wi l l inc lude the ur lparameter oauth_problem with thevalue user_refused. Token ExpirationTimes Want to know how long a token isvalid for?  Until now your applicationhad no hints about the validity length. Some of our endpoints now returnthe expiration time of the token.  TherequestToken response now includesthe oauth_expires_in parameter.  Thevalue of this is the number of secondsremaining for the token.  We’ll beadding this to the accessTokenresponse in a future release. TokenInvalidation Now you can invalidate an OAuthtoken for your application.  Just sendan OAuth signed GET request to:https://api.linkedin.com/uas/oauth/invalidateToken A 200 response indicates that thetoken was successfully invalidated.Learning More Visit the LinkedIn DeveloperNetwork to find out more aboutOAuth, Authentication and all theways you can integrate LinkedInfunctionality with your application orsite. How Twitter’s New Media BlogAims To Teach By Example(Mashable!)Submitted at 4/30/2010 5:58:36 PM

Twitter has a two-pronged approachto give media companies the ability tocreate dynamic interfaces that filterand curate tweets in new ways. One isto showcase great examples ofTwitter implementations on itsTwitter Media blog, and the other isto g ive media companies theresources to do these types of projectson their own. I spoke this week with Twitter’sRobin Sloan, who works in mediapartnerships, to find out more. Hesaid the blog launched a few weeksago and is aimed at media companiesthat want to build Twitter integrationinto their sites.“It’s designed to be a spotlight andshowcase for really good work,” hesaid. Sloan and Twitter’s Chloe Sladdensplit the task of writing blog posts.Their goal is to update it daily andpost an in-depth case study eachweek. The Blog as a How-To Guide The blog aims to be a practical how-to guide for creating projects, such asNBC’s Twitter interface for theWinter Olympics, and Sloan hopesthat as people follow the blog, theirimagination for what they can do withTwitter will become bigger andbroader.“The idea of lists of tweets on a webpage; we can go well beyond that,” hesaid. Some news sites have already donethat . The Twit ter Media bloghighlights the Huffington Post’sTwitter Edition, in which nearlyevery page and section has Twitterintegration. The site uses a mixture of

Twitter’s API,@anywhere, andTwitter lists. Sloan said you can’t tellwhere The Huffington Post stops andwhere Twitter begins. T h e H u f f i n g t o n P o s t u s e s@anywhere Hover Cards on itsTwitter lists and the “Hot on Twitter”section of the site is content that’s“selected and organized based ontweet volume,” according to theTwitter Media blog. Sloan said thedepth that The Huffington Post hasachieved is what they are aiming toget more people to do. One of the main functions of the blogis to walk producers and developersthrough how to do one of theseprojects so they can learn from them.“On our site, we explain the process,”Sloan said. The Twitter Media site gets its blogcontent from partnerships that havelaunched, and by searching for greatexamples and from others’ tips. Sloansaid they increasingly want to useTwitter itself as a way to get greatusage tips on both big and smallprojects.“My hope is we can get a lot of stuffthat way,” he said. Why Launch aMedia Blog? The activities of celebrities andreporters can be a strong connection

point for new Twitter users to get onboard and stay there. Twitterlaunched their media-focused blogbecause news organizations and TVpersonali t ies have been real lyaggressive in adopting innovativeuses for Twitter, according to Sloan.“We find media can be a good bridgefor users of Twitter,” he said. “We’dlike to be able to leverage that to getthem to be Twitter users.” Twitter can help improve journalism,he added, and they would like toassist media companies such as TheNew York Times in doing betterjournalism. In order to better help newsorganizations, Twitter needs tounderstand what the media needs.Sloan said there are tools out therethat aren’t built by Twitter to helppeople solve problems. Sloan told me that in about a week,Twitter Media will launch a directoryof tools, platforms and services tobetter help journalists find the third-party apps that will be useful to them. Earthly pleasures come to Mapsby A Googler (The OfficialGoogle Blog)Submitted at 4/26/2010 3:00:00 PM

Earth Day may have just passed, butthe Google Earth team loves it toomuch to let it go. So we’ve found ourown special way to celebrate EarthDay (a little late) by making anannouncement that we’ve beenworking toward for a long time: Earthview in Google Maps. When we first launched GoogleEarth back in 2005, it revolutionizedthe world of digital mapping. In theyears since, Earth has been gettingfaster and lighter while adding largeamounts of imagery, more ambitiousfeatures and an ever-expanding rosterof platforms, including support forMac, Linux, iPhone, Android andeven the 2011 Audi A8! Web browsers haven’t exactly beenstanding still either. As their capacityto handle richer applications has

steadily grown, our ability to bringGoogle Earth online has grown alongwith it. In 2008, we released theGoogle Earth Plugin to developers, and since then thousands of sites haveused i t t o c rea te many coo lapplications and even games. Nowthe time has come to take off the

plugin’s online training wheels androll it out on the main stage: GoogleMaps. So if you’re one of thehundreds of millions of people whouse Maps worldwide, you can nowexplore the world in luxuriantly-detailed, data-rich 3D imagery andterrain from Google Earth. If you’ve

already downloaded the Google EarthPlugin, you should be able to seeEarth view in Maps right away.Otherwise, you can just install thePlugin to enjoy a Maps experiencethat includes angled Earth views, 3Dbuildings, smooth panning andzooming and a great introductoryshowcase of places to visit and thingsto see. Current Google Earth users, ofcourse, will continue to enjoy the fullpower of the standalone application:KML editing, historical imagery,GPS tracks, tour-creation, Mars, Sky,flight simulator and so on. But forquick online access, the power of 3Dwill also be available at the click ofa[n Earth] button. We’re thrilled tobe able to bring this functionality tothe web and we invite you to comeshare the moment with us. Posted by Brian McClendon, VP ofEngineering, Google Geo

Integrating virtual keyboards inGoogle searchby A Googler (The OfficialGoogle Blog)Submitted at 4/29/2010 1:24:00 PM

You’ve spilled coffee on yourkeyboard. The a, e, i, o, u, and r keyshave stopped working. Now try tosearch Google for the nearest c o mpu t e r re p air shop. The pain oftyping on this broken keyboard iss imi lar to what many peoplesearching in non-English languagesfeel when trying to type today.Typing searches on keyboards notdesigned for your languages can befrustrating, even impossible. Our user research has shown thatmany people are more comfortableformulating search queries in theirown language but have difficultytyping these queries into Google. (Trytyping on a keyboard with Englishletters.) To overcome the difficultythey face in typing in their locallanguage scripts, some people haveresorted to copying and pasting fromother sites and from online translationtools. But there’s an easier way — avirtual, or “on-screen” keyboard, letsyou type directly in your locallanguage script in an easy andconsistent manner, no matter whereyou are or what computer you’reusing. Virtual keyboards let people typedirectly in their local language scriptand don't require any additionalsoftware.

Last year, to make text input easy forpeop le ac ross the g lobe , weintroduced a virtual keyboard APIthrough code.google.com. Thisallowed developers to enable virtualkeyboards on any text field or textarea in their webpages. Today, weare taking this effort one step furtherby integrating virtual keyboards intoGoogle search in 35 languages. Online AdvertisingRevenues Jump Almost15 Percent In FirstQuarter(TechCrunch)Submitted at 4/30/2010 4:50:44 PM

The online advertising industry sawgrowth accelerate in the first quarter, with the combined advertisingrevenues of the four largest players(Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, andAOL) jumping almost 15 percent to$8.8 billion. This compares to 10percent annual growth in the fourthquarter, and negative growth the firsttwo quarters of last year (aka, theGreat Advertising Recession of2009). Overall growth would have beeneven stronger if AOL didn’t havesuch a rough quarter. It was the onlyone of the four companies to show adecline in advertising revenues, down19 percent. Google’s ad revenue wasup 21.5 percent, Microsoft’s was up8.8 percent, and Yahoo’s was up 3percent (although the display portionwas up 20 percent). As a result ofAOL’s poor showing, the combined$8.8 billion total was down 2.6percent from the fourth quarter’s $9billion I keep track of these numbers everyquarter for these four companies, which turns out to be a good proxyfor overal l onl ine advert is ingrevenues since they represent amajority of the industry’s revenues. The numbers represent globaladvertising revenues, and includenetwork revenues paid to affiliatesthrough AdSense and Yahoo’s adnetwork. Intel to launch Core i5ULV processor in June,MSI X Series to snatchit up(Engadget)Submitted at 4/30/2010 7:59:00 PM

Well, it looks like Intel will finallybe delivering that ultra low voltageCore i5 chip this summer. While MSI didn't provide uswith firm benchmark scores, they didpass on word that the Windows ratingscore is higher on the i5-poweredX360 than the previous version, andthe endurance is quite good -- theyexpect 7 to 8 hours with an eight-cellba t t e ry . The company hasn ' tdetermined pricing on the X360 butpredicts that it will go for around$700 to $900 depending on the configwhen it hits shelves in the June / Julytime frame. Exclusive: Justin.TV’s NewAndroid App, iPhone App Hits1.5M Downloads (Video)(TechCrunch)Submitted at 4/30/2010 2:58:34 PM

Justin.tv is finally kicking its mobileplans into high gear. Next week, thelifecasting company will release itsAndroid app to beta users. Unlike itsiPhone app (released last month), theAndroid offering will finally let usersstream live video with a simple clickand simultaneously chat as theyshoot. It’s a simple interface, animage of your shot, a chat bar belowand three buttons on the right handside: chat, record and share (see videoabove). The official version for publicconsumption is slated for May. Justin.tv is relatively late to themobile game— rival Android andiPhone products from Ustream andQik have been out for months— butthe team argues that taking time torefine the products will help themgrab more market share later thisyear. That approach may seemstrange given the company’s pioneerstatus in the market (founder JustinKan kicked off the lifecasting trendwith his personal channel back in

2007), but VP of marketing EvanSoloman says Justin.tv doesn’t put ahigh premium on being the first toadopt a new technology or platform, which is why it didn’t rush intocreating apps for the Android or theiPad. The delays could give theircompeti tors an early strategicadvantage, but so far their game planseems to be working OK— their one-month old iPhone app has enjoyed1.5 million downloads to date. That figure alone was a pleasantsurprise, says Soloman, who wasexpecting a number closer to aquarter million. Here are some otherkey numbers, according to Justin.tv:-On the first day of the app’s release,in late March, there was just a fewhundred concurrent (simultaneous)viewers on average, this week,Ju s t i n . t v i s ave r ag ing 2 ,000concurrents on its mobile platform.-It hit a high on Wednesday, when thenumber of concurrents brieflyreached 10,000.-Mobile views now make up about 5-10% of total views. The company is finally picking up

the pace on its mobile initiatives, butit’s unfortunate that the apps onlyoffer a portion of Justin.tv’s features. As described, the iPhone app lets youview and search live channels but notbroadcast (founder Justin Kan citeslimitations on the API and poorworkarounds), the Android app letsyou broadcast but not view livechannels. However, some of  theseholes should be filled later this year, when it releases a new iPhone app inJune based on the new SDK withbroadcast and playback capabilitiesalong with new plug-ins for socialmedia sites like Facebook. If Justin.tv can get all the pieces inplace (and soon), mobile will quicklyand dramatically shape usage patternsand become a significant trafficdriver. Kan, who believes that themobile platform could dominate 30 to40% of the business next year, saysongoing improvements in wirelessconnectivity should also support thee x p e c t e d s u r g e i n m o b i l eb r o a d c a s t i n g . The Answer to Facebook’s Universal “Like”Button: OpenDislike(Mashable!)Submitted at 4/30/2010 5:10:02 PM

Last week, Facebook unveiled itsuniversal “like” button, furthering itsgoal of world domination in theprocess. Thus, it was inevitable thatsomeone, somewhere would developthe universal “dislike” button. OpenDislike.org, which is poweredby German iden t i ty manageryiid.com, is really more proof ofconcept than something that is everlikely to be largely used or integrated, however. OpenDislike is the most recent

example of tools that aim to fill thevoid of an official ability to “dislike”content or comments on Facebook.Last fa l l , we reported on theFacebook Dislike Firefox plugin andbefore that the Thradsy dashboard, but OpenDislike is interestingbecause it mimics the implementationand functionality of Facebook’sofficial like buttons. Like the official solution, you canadd a “dislike” button to a website bypasting in a l ine of code andmodifying the URL to point to thatpage or article. Of course, users haveto log in to their yiid account for the

yiid buttons to work, and althoughyou can link your yiid and Facebookaccounts, it won’t offer a universalexperience to anyone but other yiid

users. Even if this doesn’t have a lot of real-world use, we love the concept.Would you like a universal dislikebutton to be usable across Facebook?Let us know![ Img: striatic on Flickr] For more social media coverage, follow Mashable Social Media onTwitter or become a fan on Facebook Reviews: Facebook, Flickr, Twitter Tags: dislike, facebook, facebookbuttons, like, opendislike, yiid

Odd YouTube BannersMislead In TheFacebook/GoogleIdentity War(TechCrunch)Submitted at 4/29/2010 9:00:01 PM

Early this morning we got word ofwhat sounded like a pretty majorchange for YouTube: some users areseeing banners inviting them to “Sign up for YouTube with yourFacebook account!“. That sounds a whole lot l ikeYouTube is allowing users to skiphaving to create a Google account byletting them simply log in with theirFacebook accounts, which would be astrange move strategy-wise. As itturns out, it’s simply a case of somequestionable wording. I’m not seeing the banner myself, buta YouTube spokesman says thatclicking it will take you to thestandard YouTube registration screen, where you fill out your information asusual. Once you’ve done that, yournewly created YouTube/Googleaccount wil l automatical ly beconnected to Facebook via FacebookConnect, so that it pulls in yourfriends’ shared items. But you aren’tactually logging in using Facebook’sSingle Sign-on feature, which is animportant distinction. And YouTube probably won’t bedoing that any time soon — Facebookand Google are increasingly fightingover the future of identity on the web;accept ing Facebook logins onYouTube would hurt Google’s causeand bring Facebook one step closer tobecoming the web’s ubiquitous loginstandard. That said, YouTube has beengradually integrating some FacebookConnect features since last summer, beginning with an autoshare featurein June 2009 and more recentlyallowing users to see what theirfriends have shared from YouTube toFacebook. In other words, YouTubeis embracing Facebook’s sharingfunctionality, but it isn’t going all theway. Release notes: five new languages, email alerts, share to Buzz andBloggerby Mia (YouTube Blog)Submitted at 4/30/2010 5:45:00 PM

What better way to celebrate theweekend than with these recent addsand enhancements: Language offering grows: There aref ive new languages in whichYouTube can be experienced: Greek,Hungarian, Finnish, Danish andNorwegian. Simply scroll to thebottom of any page, find where itsays "Language" and click on yourcurrent language to access the fullmenu of options, including our fivemost recent additions: Email alerts: We're experimentingwith a new form of subscriptionalerts. Now, when you subscribe to achannel (or edit your subscription toan existing channel), you can elect toreceive an email the instant theperson you're subscribed to uploads anew video. This will appeal to peoplewho check the i r emai l morefrequently than they log in toYouTube (though we've never heardof such people *wink*) but who also

want to know immediately when theirfavorite content creators upload newwork. Refreshed look for search resultspage: When you do a search, you'llsee we tightened up the typographyon the results page. We're using aconsistent size and color to establishthe basic look, and then we're addinga bit of color and bolding to bringmore prominence to certain elements, such as view count. New sharing options: Click the"share" button underneath any videoand you'll see two new platforms toeffortlessly share videos to: GoogleBuzz and Blogger. Try it! New upload interface: When youclick on the Upload button, you maynotice that things look a littledifferent. As with our redesignedvideo page and as part of ourlarger"spring cleaning" effort, a maingoal was to streamline the look andfunctionality of the upload page. Wetoned down some of the colors andmoved the Webcam option to a moreprominent position next to the upload

button. We also made it easier to findinformation about how to uploaddirectly from your mobile phone. Player changes: As many of youhave noticed, the video player istransforming, too. We've just fullyreleased a new player design for allvideos without ads. The goal is forthe player to be as subtle as possibleso that the video itself shines anddoesn't have to compete with the stuffaround it. We'll be following this roll-out with player upgrades for videoswith ads and then for embeddedvideos. Improvements to YouTube-on-iPad:There's a great native YouTube appon the iPad, but we've also madesome changes to how the YouTubewebsite functions on the device.Among the improvements: we createda grid layout for the home screen, search results and other video lists, and devised a new layout for thevideo page, with the video playingright in the page. Hewlett-Packard To Kill Windows7 Tablet Project(TechCrunch)Submitted at 4/29/2010 9:28:58 PM

Hewlett-Packard has killed off itsmuch ballyhooed Windows 7 tabletcomputer, says a source who’s beenbriefed on the matter. The device was first unveiled byMicrosoft CEO Steve Ballmer at CES2010 in January and was supposed tohit the market in mid 2010. But oursource tells us that HP is not satisfiedwith Windows 7 as a tablet operatingsystem and has terminated the project(something CrunchGear mentionedmonths ago). HP may also be abandoning Intel-based hardware for its slate lineupsimply because it’s too power hungry. That would also rule out Windows 7as an operating system. So what will HP use as an operatingsystem? Look for Google-powereddevices, which have already beenannounced. And HP really does seemdetermined to make a go of the PalmWebOS. They said how important itwas to them yesterday, and they will

likely experiment with porting it to aslate-type device. Will WebOS emerge as a successfuloperating system for tablet devices? That seems very unlikely given thedominance of the closed Apple OSand the likely success of the openAndroid and Chrome operatingsystems from Google. To get tractionfrom third party developers withWebOS HP will need to sell a lot of

units. And it’s not clear what they’dgain from all that effort, anyway. HPknows how to bui ld and se l lhardware, not operating systems. We’ve reached out to HP forcomment. Actually, There AreAlready Well Over5,000 iPad Apps. TheiPad Told Me.(TechCrunch)Submitted at 4/30/2010 4:23:07 PM

Ea r l i e r today , a number o fpublications ( including us) ran withthe story that the App Store wasclosing in on 5,000 apps, with 4,870.These numbers came from analyticsstartup Distimo, which generally hasgood data and insight into the variousapp stores. But, naturally, it’s alwaysbetter to get your data from thes o u r c e . A n d w h i l e A p p l e ,unsurprisingly, isn’t talking, theydon’t have to. Because the iPad is. The number of iPad apps in the AppStore is actually already well past5,000. How do I know? Sometime inthe past couple of days, Apple addeda new “Release Date” area to the iPadversion of the App Store. This residesnext to the standard “New” and“What’s Hot” areas along the top ofthe store. It’s simply a new way tosort through the apps. But this areahas another nifty feature: it tells youhow many apps there are in total soyou know where you are in thenavigation. According to this number, there are 5,351 iPad apps in the AppStore. To be clear, these are apps that areeither iPad-only apps, or Universalones (that work with both the iPadand iPhone/iPod touch). This isn’tcounting any of the regular iPhoneapps that still work on the iPad, orobviously, there would be somethinglike the 200,000 number Steve Jobscited yesterday. This new Release Date area of theiPad App Store is actually veryuseful. Since the iPad is new, thereare obviously far fewer apps builts p e c i f i c a l l y f o r i t t h a n t h eiPhone/iPod touch. And whileApple’s New and What’s Hot area arepretty good at surfacing good apps (asis the “Top Charts” area), if you wantthe latest and greatest iPad apps totest out before any of your friendshave them, this Release Date area isthe place to be. Update: Distimo has let me know inthe comment that their data is onlyth rough Apr i l 26 , hence thediscrepancy. CrunchBase InformationiPad Information provided byCrunchBase
