we have the San Remo Musical Festival inwintertime, and in Dubai, the Arabian businesscapital, they have a festival that is celebrated byusing credit cards. In the city of luxury and ul-tra-modern skyscrapers in the desert, theShopping Festival is an appointment that can’t
be missed. Last April, for the tenth consecutiveyear, hotels, malls and department stores ofhigh fashion brands were the scene of socialevents and fashion shows. Dubai’s shoppingcenters number over thirty and, just like in oth-er parts of the world, the end of the seasonsales are an enjoyable way to spend both time

In one month, over5 million visitors (see sidebar)went under the “Ponte deiSospiri” bridge at Mercato,which has Venetian-style squaresand buildings, through the Soukdell’Oro or Madinat Jumeira,through the soft atmosphere ofthe Paris Gallery or through thecosmopolitan stands at the hugeGlobal Village. Many were Amer-ican and European tourists, andmany more were ladies fromDubai and nearby areas, almostall of them wearing abaya andshaila (the black tunic and veil),or covered completely in theirburqa. And they buy Sisley whichpromises angelic hands. Umrajhdis a young make-up artist fromDubai who asks her husband’s per-mission before revealing her nameto the interviewer. Then, she talksabout how important make-up isin the daily routine of Arab
women. “Up until two years ago,we only used kajal or an eye pen-cil,” she told Luxury. “Now, we liketo wear color, even under theburqa, and we like to use up tofive shades of eye shadow at atime, both pearled and mat.” Um-rajhd’s hands are the perfect exam-ple of Dubai’s sophisticated atmos-phere between the sea and thedesert, tradition and progress, sky-scrapers and palaces: henna tat-toos and a French manicure.

Up until five months ago, she had a bouti-que-workshop in the center of Dubai. Now,her headquarters are located in a presti-gious villa on Jumeirah Beach Road, the Be-verly Hills of the Emirates. Jameela El Man-soor is the most popular fashion designerof affluent ladies from in and around Du-bai. Her label, Ghawashi Fashion Design,carries large Egyptian-style bracelets. Thedesigner is planning to open a boutique inMilan, and also in Rome and Paris, to bringauthentic Arabian dresses and accessoriesto Europe.
