Reflection from the Faithful Admiral
BE NOT AFRAID
We all expect surprises. Each day holds a surprise. But only if we expect it can we see, hear or feel it when it comes to us. Let's not be afraid to receive each day's surprise, whether it comes to us as sorrow or as joy. It will open a new place in our hearts, a place where we can welcome new friends and celebrate more fully our shared humility. We all have spiritual parents; Joy and Sorrow are never separated. When our hearts rejoice at a spectacular view, we may miss our Family and friends who cannot see it and when we are
overwhelmed with grief, we may discover what true friendship is all about. Joy is hidden in sorrow and sorrow in joy. If we try to avoid sorrow at all costs, we may never taste joy, and if we are suspicious of ecstasy, agony can never reach us either. Joy and Sorrow are the parents of our Spiritual Growth. The Lord says, “I am the Lord who created you from the time you were born, I have helped you. Do not be afraid.” (Isaiah 44:1&2) Lord, I confess I am not what I ought to be, but I thank you, Lord that I am not what I used to be.
In keeping with past articles, God is pleased with work done well. He honors good workers, and so should we. God is pleased with His Knights of Columbus and Assembly 2588.

The Nominating Committee/Trustees are putting together the Assembly Officer Slate for 2017-2018 Fraternal Year. Contact them if interested in assuming a leadership position in the Assembly. The Nominating Committee will present its recommendations at the next meeting. Elections will be held at the May meeting when it will be appropriate to submit nominations from the floor.

Warriors to Lourdes Pilgrimage
The 2017 Warriors to Lourdes Pilgrimage for Non-Wounded, Wounded, Ill or Injured Military Personnel during the 59th Annual International Military Pilgrimage (PMI) will take place May 16-23, 2017. The theme for the 59th PMI is Dona Nobis Pacem (Grant Us Peace).The pilgrimage, sponsored by the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, and the Knights of Columbus, is the latest event in a long history of both organizations’ involvement in Lourdes and service to the military.
Military personnel, their designated caregivers and volunteers will travel to the Marian shrine for a time of resting, praying and healing. The retreat will consist of a number of spiritual events, including special Masses, Eucharistic Procession, Adoration, Procession and Benediction, Blessing of the Sick, a visit to the baths at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, a candlelight vigil and a closing ceremony that draws tens of thousands of troops to the sacred shrine every year. “We will journey and pray with pilgrims from around the world,” said Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio of the Archdiocese of Military Services. “It will be an occasion to raise our hearts and minds to the Prince of Peace and beg for an increase in understanding and a decrease in strife.”
If approved and deemed eligible, all expenses for military personnel and for their designated caregivers will be covered by Knights of Columbus Charities, Inc. Companions are invited to attend at their own expense and may be offered needs-based financial assistance on a case-by-case basis. U.S.-based and European-based medical and non-medical volunteers are also encouraged to apply.

Vietnam War Commemoration This commemoration is a multi-year effort and is sponsored by the Department of Defense in recognition for all those veterans and surviving spouses of those veterans who served in the armed forces during the Vietnam War years (November 1, 1955 to May 15, 1975). There are also other recognition categories for POW (or POW surviving spouse), immediate family of those unaccounted for, and in memory of those on the Vietnam Memorial. The recognition is presentation of a special lapel pin for veterans and a pin and certificate for surviving spouses and the other categories.
By presidential proclamation on May 25, 2012, the Commemoration extends from Memorial Day 2012 through Veterans Day 2025. Congress articulated five objectives for this Commemoration: 1. To thank and honor veterans of the Vietnam War, including personnel who were held as prisoners of war, or listed as missing in action, for their service and sacrifice on behalf of the United States and to thank and honor the families of these veterans.2. To highlight the service of the Armed Forces during the Vietnam War and the contributions of federal agencies and governmental and non-governmental organizations that served with, or in support of, the Armed Forces.3. To pay tribute to the contributions made on the home front by the people of the United States during the Vietnam War.
4. To highlight the advances in technology, science, and medicine related to military research conducted during the Vietnam War.5. To recognize the contributions and sacrifices made by the allies of the United States during the Vietnam War.

Education Assistance Benefits
Virginia Military Survivors and Dependents Education Program
The Military Survivors and Dependents Program (VMSDEP) provides educations benefits to spouses and children of military service members killed, missing in action, taken prisoner, or who became at least 90 percent disabled as a result of military service in an armed conflict. Military service includes service in the United States Armed Forces, United States Armed Forces Reserves, the Virginia National Guard, or the Virginia National Guard Reserves. Armed conflict includes military operations against terrorism or as the result of a terrorist act, a peace-keeping mission, or any armed conflict after December 6, 1941. This program may pay for tuition of fee at any state-supported college or university in Virginia. Benefits are available for up to 36 months.
Honorary Diplomas for World War II Veterans
Veteran Honorary High School Diplomas recognize the life experiences of veterans who were unable to complete their high school education because of service in the armed forces during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Since the first honorary diplomas were issues in 2001, more than 1,000 have been awarded to veterans of these three wars. To obtain an honorary diploma, a veteran may submit a statement to the Veterans Education Unit of the Virginia Department of Education describing his or her service, the location of the last school attended, and affirming that he or she was unable to complete high school upon return to civilian life The guidelines also allow family members and veterans' organizations to submit this information on behalfVeterans.

OUR SYMBOL:
Sir Knights of the Fourth Degree, deem it an honor and privilege to carry our TRIAD EMBLEM, which features The Dove, The Cross, and The Globe. Our Honored Order cherishes as its Patron, Christopher Columbus.
Spiritually, the sacred symbols fashioned on our sword and lapel pin, typify the union of the Three Divine Persons in one Godhead The Most Holy Trinity.
o The Globe God the Father, Creator of the Universe. o The Cross God the Son, Redeemer of Mankind. o The Dove God the Holy Spirit, Sanctifier of Humanity.
HISTORY: In the early years of the Fourth Degree, members met as part of their councils, mostly after meetings. In 1910, during a reorganization of the Order's leadership, the first Assemblies were created. Additionally the position of Supreme Master was established to lead the Fourth Degree internationally. Vice Supreme Masters lead Provinces and Masters head Districts. This system has spread and flourished as Sir Knights not only serve their local Church through their service to local councils but also their joint efforts in these Assemblies. The Honor Guard, first called for in 1886 was officially formed in 1902, for ceremonial purposes. Since that time, the uniforms of the Color Corps have varied, however all have shared the similar theme of mariners. Most noticeable in today's current uniform is the chapeau worn with ostrich feathers.
MEMBERSHIP: The Fourth Degree ritual added patriotism to the three original principles of the order: charity, unity, fraternity. Any Third Degree member in good standing with at least six months membership in the order – is eligible for membership in the Forth Degree. The primary purpose of the Forth Degree is to foster the spirit of patriotism by promoting responsible citizenship and love of and loyalty to the knights’ respective countries through active membership in local Forth Degree groups called Assemblies. Forth Degree members must retain their membership as Third Degree members in the local council to remain in good standing.
EVENTS: The first Exemplification of the new Degree was scheduled to be held in the Astor Hotel in New York City on February 22, 1900. However, there were so many candidates the Exemplification had to be moved to a larger venue. Therefore the site was moved to the Lenox Lyceum. At this first Exemplification of the Fourth Degree 1,100 members of the Knights of Columbus, being in good standing "took their fourth." The second Exemplification, held in Boston on May 8, 1900 saw another 750 Third Degree knights join the ranks of Sir Knights. cherishes as its Patron, Christopher Columbus. Once a Sir Knight attains an office, he is entitled to wear the colors of that office until elected or appointed to a higher office, except for the Marshal [appointed by the Master of District] and the Color Corps Commanders [appointed by the Faithful Navigator] who are appointed for a specific term and then revert to their previous colors when
