Origins ● Started in the early twentieth century with

Henri Matisse and Andre Derain.

● First Exhibited at the Salon D'automne in 1905.

● Art critic Louis Vauxcelles coined the name "Les Fauves," meaning Wild Beasts.

● Inspired others to experiment with new possibilities for color in art.

● His symbolic use of color pushed others towards fauvism.

Andre Derain● summer of 1905 worked with Matisse in the

fishing port of Collioure.

● Good friends with fellow fauvist painter Maurice de Vlaminck.

● Commissioned by Ambroise Vollard to create a series of paintings about London.

● Focused mainly with aerial perspectives.
