OHIO STATE SIGNS FOUR FOR 2015-16
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Four student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent to further their
academic and athletic careers as members of the Ohio State softball program, head coach Kelly Kovach
Schoenly announced in November.
Brianna Betschel | OF | Anaheim, Calif./Canyon High SchoolThree-year starter and two-time fi rst team all-conference selection ... CalHiSports.com All-State nominee
in 2014 ... Century Conference Offensive MVP in 2013 after hitting .385 with 35 hits in 29 games and 14
stolen bases ... Coaches Award recipient and scholar-athlete as a junior in 2014 ... hit .366 with 30 hits,
23 runs scored and a .441 on-base percentage ... Canyon was 20-7 last year and advanced to the CIF
semifi nals ... has played in 79 career games with 84 hits, 51 runs scored, 21 RBI and a .351 average.
Kovach Schoenly on Betschel: “Brianna will be a great addition to our team as we lose [Caitlin] Conrad
and [Taylor] Watkins in the outfi eld next year. She is a left handed hitting triple threat and picks apart
defenses with her ability to place the ball. She has tremendous instincts on the bases as well as base-
stealing speed. Bri will be someone that can step in right away as she has experience, range, and game
savvy in the outfi eld.”
Emily Clark | C/UTL | Prospect, Ohio/North Union High SchoolFirst team All-Ohio selection as both a sophomore and junior ... led North Union to the Division III state
semifi nals last spring, batting .638 and slugging 1.347 ... named the Mid Ohio Athletic Conference
Player of the Year ... three-time fi rst team All-MOAC selection ... second team All-Metro choice from the
Columbus Dispatch ... a member of Lasers Blue, the 2014 ASA/USA 16U National Champions ... also won
a national title with Lasers Gold in 2010 ... three-year varsity letterwinner in basketball.
Kovach Schoenly on Clark: “Pure and simple, Emily is a winner - as evidenced by leading two different
ASA squads to national championships. She is small in stature, but big in power and has the tenacity of a
warrior. She will play a variety of positions in her career here, but most importantly, she will add offensive
punch. Emily has won every award there is to win in the state of Ohio and has excelled at the national
level throughout her scholastic career. Next, she will bring that championship swagger to Ohio State and
follow the other great Ohio players that have led the Buckeyes.”
Katya Duvall | P | Seal Beach, Calif./Los Alamitos High School Spent her fi rst two years at Pacifi ca High School in Garden Grove, Calif., and was the Rookie of the Year
in 2012 ... Pacifi cia went 55-9 in her two seasons, advancing to the CIF championship game in 2013 ...
transferred to Los Alamitos High School for her junior season ... second team all-county by the Orange
County News and second team All-Empire League in 2013 ... a three-time scholar athlete award winner ...
plays club softball for the nationally-renowned SoCal Athletics ... gave up just three earned runs in 18.1
innings at the 16U PGF Nationals with 25 strikeouts and a 1.14 ERA to help her team fi nish third ... at 14U
PGF Nationals, pitched 22.0 innings with 29 strikeouts, three earned runs and a 0.95 ERA ... SoCal fi nished
second in 2012 and ninth in 2013.
Kovach Schoenly on Duvall: “Katya is a clever and skillful pitcher, always challenging the batters with her
movement. Playing with the So Cal Athletics organization, Kat has competed for national championships
every summer. After sitting out some time due to an injury, Kat has come back with a vengeance and a
new purpose on the mound. She is determined to make her mark here.”
Morgan Ray | P | Huson, Mt./Frenchtown High SchoolTwo-time Montana Gatorade Player of the Year ... posted a 23-1 record along with a 0.72 ERA in the circle
as a junior, leading the Broncs (28-1) to a second straight Class A state title ... struck out 280 batters and
walked just 28 in 145 innings pitched ... fi red 10 no-hitters, including one perfect game, and held oppo-
nents to a .114 batting average ... at the plate, the two-time Class A First Team All-State selection batted
.598 with 12 home runs, 54 RBI and a 1.253 slugging percentage ... also a four-year varsity letterwinner
in volleyball where she leads the team in both blocks and kills ... member of the National Honors Society
and Student Council.
Kovach Schoenly on Ray: “Morgan comes to Ohio State with a great deal of enthusiasm and desire to
have an impact on our program. Hailing from the state of Montana, she will be a secret weapon. Although
she was somewhat hard to fi nd, her talent was easily recognizable. She throws the ball hard, has a
change of speed, and sharp movement - a lethal combination. A multi-sport athlete, we love that she has
tremendous athleticism and an intense competitive spirit.”

270 career victories. Six consecutive 30-win seasons. Eighteen
players who have earned a total of 29 all-conference honors.
Fourteen NCAA Regional appearances as either a head coach,
assistant coach or player. By any measure, Kelly Kovach
Schoenly is a winner. And as she enters her third season guiding
Ohio State in 2015, she has the Buckeyes positioned to write
the next chapter in its storied history.
In her fi rst two seasons in Columbus, Schoenly’s teams won
64 games, including seven over teams ranked in the Top 25. Four
of her players have earned All-Big Ten accolades while three
have been honored with NFCA All-Midwest Region honors. And
just as important, the Buckeyes are excelling in the classroom.
In 2014, fi ve players garnered Big Ten Distinguished Scholar
recognition, the most of any softball program in the conference.
Last spring, Schoenly led Ohio State to victories in 10 of
its last 12 games, including an upset of second-seeded and
18th-ranked Nebraska in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfi nals.
She mentored three fi rst-team All-Big Ten choices, led by
unanimous selection Evelyn Carrillo. With a fi nal record of
30-25, a Schoenly-coached team reached the 30-win mark for
the sixth-consecutive season. In conference play, the Buckeyes
won 13 games, the most since 2010, and fi nished in the upper
half of the league standings for the fi rst time in four years.
Schoenly’s debut season with Ohio State in 2013 was
highlighted by 18 victories in the fi rst 26 games. Ohio State
would fi nish the season 34-22 and defeated Iowa, 8-4, in the
opening round of the Big Ten Tournament. Cammi Prantl was a
second team All-Big Ten selection after putting together one of
the most impressive rookie seasons in school history (freshmen-
record 40 runs scored and a .346 batting average, fi fth-highest
amongst freshmen).
Schoenly spent six seasons as head coach at Miami (Ohio)
and was the program’s all-time winningest coach with 188
career victories, leading the RedHawks to their fi rst MAC
Tournament title in 2009 before winning again in 2012.
Schoenly also led the team to two NCAA Tournament berths
in both 2009 and 2012, respectively. Prior to her stint at Miami,
Schoenly was an assistant coach at Penn State (1998-2006)
for eight seasons and helped guide the Nittany Lions to seven
Big Ten Tournament appearances and six NCAA Tournament
berths. Before her time in State College, Schoenly was an
assistant at her alma mater, Michigan, for three years (1996-
98), helping the squad reach the NCAA Women’s College World
Series three consecutive times.
Prior to her time in Oxford, Schoenly guided one of the
nation’s best pitching staffs in 2006, as the Nittany Lions
fi nished the season ranked 12th nationally in ERA (1.36) and
limited their opponents to 74 earned runs in 380.2 innings.
During her eight-year tenure, Schoenly helped Penn State to
seven 30-win seasons, including a program-record 39 wins in
2006.
During her stint in Ann Arbor, the Wolverines won two Big
Ten regular-season titles, three Big Ten Tournament titles,
three NCAA Regional Championships and made three trips to
the NCAA Women’s College World Series. In addition to being
honored as part of the NFCA Great Lakes Coaching Staff of
the Year in 1998, Schoenly coached one All-America pitcher,
three conference pitchers of the year and six all-conference
selections.
A two-time GTE Academic All-American, Schoenly received
her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Michigan
in December of 1995. After receiving the NCAA Postgraduate
Scholarship, Schoenly went on to earn her master’s degree in
elementary mathematics education from Michigan in May of
1998.
Schoenly and her husband Doug, a Penn State alumnus and
tennis professional, have one daughter, Danielle.
