Select “Search the Library Catalog” for Webb and ISLE catalogs

OverviewYou are automatically logged into the databases through Webb if you connect on campus

If you are accessing the databases from off campus, you can find the passwords in Student News under “Research Database Passwords”

Overview – Print Resources

• Webb Library – The first place you should check for books.• ISLE Libraries – Where you should check first if Webb does not have what

you want. Allow time for the books to arrive.• Claremont Colleges – Your last resource for books. Allow time for the

books to arrive.

Useful for any resource:• Oxford English Dictionary – Continually updated English Dictionary.• Hacker’s A Writer’s Reference – The electronic version of your Hacker

book.

Overview – Electronic Resources

• JSTOR – A full-text database of academic journals, images, and other primary sources. One of the main databases used in higher education.

• ProQuest – A full-text database of primarily newspapers and magazines. Also a highly used database in education.

• Discovering Collection – Databases focusing on primary sources, biographies, and multimedia in primarily history, literature, biography, science and social studies.

• Encyclopedia Britannica – This is a great resource for initial research and for sharing information with a group.

• Librarian’s Index to the Internet – A collection of websites that have been vetted by librarians as useful and credible for research.

• The catalog uses Boolean search terms (and, or, not)

• Keyword searching will get you the most results

• For research, it often helps to search by Subject if Keyword gives you too many results

Webb library catalog• Spelling is critical in our catalog,

which means that “celt” will return zero results in a subject search and “celts” will return seven

• Using an Asterix (celt*) will return the most results (celt, celts, celtic,…)

• If you can’t find anything, vary your search terms.

• Sometimes it helps to do a keyword search first, then find what subject terms are used in the results

• The search results are sorted by Title automatically. This can be changed to Author, Call Number, or Publication Date

• Select any result to view more details

• Add any or all results to your list

• The detailed description will give you specific information about the work

• Selecting any hyperlinked text, such as subjects, will run a search for those new parameters

• Always be sure to hit the back button in the catalog, and not the back button on your web browser

have added to your list, click the “My List” tab at the top of the screen

• This list can be edited, printed, or saved as a notepad document

• WARNING: If you leave your computer for a long period of time, the list will delete itself

• When printing, you may specify a title for the book list, add additional text, and you have three format options– Bibliography: gives you the

bibliography in MLA style, WITHOUT call number

– Brief: gives you Title, Author, Publishing year, Availability, and the Call Number

– Full: gives you all the information found on the detailed results page (see slide 11)

• To search ISLE libraries, select the “Other Libraries” tab on the left side and then select which library you want to search

• The easiest way is to select all

• Run your search the exact same way you would run a search through the Webb catalog

• In order to get a book through Interlibrary Loan, we need the Title, Author, Call Number, and the Library name

• To find out which library holds the book you want, click on “Show Copies”

• We are able to get a book from the Claremont Colleges if you need it and can not find it anywhere else

• As with Webb’s catalog, Claremont uses Boolean search terms

• If you can’t find what you are looking for initially, edit your search terms to make your search broader

• Remember to check spelling

• The online version of Encyclopedia Britannica can be searched like a database but can also be browsed like the print versions

• You are also able to search The Merriam-Webster Dictionary

brief excerpt from the text to demonstrate how the search term is used in context

• You can save results to a workspace, which you can then share with anyone else. This comes in handy for group projects

• Anyone who has that project name and password will be able to edit the project

• Anyone who only has the name will be able to view but not edit

• The Oxford English Dictionary allows quick, detailed searches of words online

• It is a more reliable online dictionary than dictionary.com or other alternatives
