1. Postgraduate Lunchtime Seminar Series, Semester 1, 2017

Four postgraduate students presented highlights of their research in the Postgraduate Lunchtime Seminar Series during AY 2017/2018 Semester 1. ● The series began with a presentation by Mr. Devin

Singh on “Axisymmetric Buckling and Strain Distribution in Spherical Caps with Free Ends”. He outlined his experimental findings and related these to analytical expressions he developed to quantify the stresses that develop in these shells. The results will be significant in the design of actuators made of smart materials.

● The next speaker, Mr. Robert Birch explained how tensile fracture and crack propagation forces vary with peat content in two common Trinidadian soils, Talparo and Piarco soils. The findings of this research will be significant in agriculture and the methods developed can be extended to different types of soils.

● Ms. Ambika Koonj Beharry continued the series with a presentation entitled: “An Investigation into the Innovation Practices of the Caribbean Manufacturing Sector”. Her work reviewed the

global competitiveness and the comparative position of the Caribbean region, and presented the empirical findings of the research on innovation practices within the manufacturing sector in the region. This research can serve as a springboard for further studies into innovation management and strategy formulation for the region.

● The final presenter was Mr. Arshad Mohammed who elaborated a method to determine optimum build parameter settings for parts built using fused deposition modelling (FDM). His technique was based on experimentation and analysis using reverse engineering (RE) techniques. The postgraduate seminar series continues to be

a vehicle for the DMME community to learn about the areas of research being conducted by their colleagues and the important questions they try to address through their projects. We encourage all staff to show their support for our research students by attending the series.

3. The DMME Conference and Exhibition 2018: “Engineering the Future” to be held on 23rd May,

2018 For generations, Trinidad & Tobago has prospered as a commodity-based economy. The nation is at a critical juncture now, however, with the supply of its key commodities trailing off. Income that supports the prosperity of our lifestyles must be sought from a range of other sources.

Engineering is a cornerstone of the creation of economic value through the design, building, testing and maintenance of systems and products that extract materials and convert them from one form to another. Trinidad & Tobago proudly boasts a long history of home-grown engineers of the highest caliber, a large proportion of whom were trained at The University of the West Indies.

As the needs of the national and regional economy are evolving, The University of the West Indies endeavors to enhance its preparation of young engineers. This year, under the theme, “Engineering the Future”, The Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering is pleased to host its 2018 Conference and Exhibition and demonstrate how the work of its students aligns with the national economic development needs as identified by the Ministry of Planning (EDAB), in a recent Foresighting exercise, namely: 1) ICT for Manufacturing & Services (Digital

Solutions), 2) Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, 3) Indigenous High-Value Added Agriculture, 4) Energy Services, and 5) Marine & Aviation Services. The theme is also in line with the University’s ‘Triple A’ strategic plan, which has as its headline theme “Revitalising Caribbean Development”.

presentation incorporated a comparative analysis of the ‘text book’ method of project governance (PG) to what actually transpired in the execution of the works. In reviewing the 8 PG components that impacted on the completion of BLCA, a review on lessons learnt was discussed. The review included: Governance Model, Stakeholder Engagement, Stakeholder Expectations, Roles and Responsibilities, Risk Assessment, Meetings and Reporting, Assurance, Project Management Control and Roles and Responsibilities. A brief discussion on lessons learnt regarding project governance was made in the presentation.

• “A Review of the Quality Management Practices Implemented during the Completion of the Brian Lara Cricket Academy” - Mr. Ian G. Telfer, FIDIC Engineer with NLBA Architects, T&T. Mr. Telfer’s presentation shed insights on the various ways in which the key elements in the successful completion of the project were harnessed to achieve the desired outcome. Given the constraints on time and cost the only variable left which would be adjusted is Quality. However, in a project such as this, Quality would be the element which would carry the most public visibility and be subject to the most long-lasting criticism.

• “A Review of the Project and Contract Management Principles and its application to the Completion of the Brian Lara Cricket Academy” - Mr. Sizwe Jackson, Project Manager with NLBA Architects, T&T. Mr. Jackson discussed the problems and the efforts in mitigating project delays in the completion of the Brian Lara Cricket Academy. He reviewed the key project management knowledge areas and highlight the advantages and disadvantages of using the stated contracting methodology and the actions taken by the Engineer and UDeCOTT to ensure success.

Over 60 participants including invited guest speakers, Project Management professionals, academics, students, and delegates from industry attended the Seminar. 45 completed evaluation forms were received. Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly good. About 82.2% of returned evaluations rated the Seminar either ‘Very Good’ (20 responses; 44.47%; rated ‘1’) or ‘Good’ (16 responses; 35.6%; rated ‘2’) plus 1 rated between. Besides, 4 participants (i.e., 8.9%) rated ‘satisfactory’ (i.e. ‘3’). Another three participants have not provided any overall rating in their returned forms. Many participants commented that the presenters were very knowledgeable about their areas of expertise and the presentations were interactive and informative.

Guidelines for Preparing an Abstract for IEM3-2014 Conference

I. Choosing a Category Pick the category which most closely describes your intended paper. We understand that some papers can fit into more than one category.

Category: General Descriptions: 1) Research Paper

This category covers papers which report on any type of research undertaken by the author(s). The research may involve the construction or testing of a model or framework, action research, testing of data, market research or surveys, empirical, scientific or clinical research.

2) Viewpoint Any paper, where content is dependent on the author's opinion and interpretation, should be included in this category; this also includes journalistic pieces.

3) Technical Paper

Describes and evaluates technical products, processes or services.

4) Conceptual Paper

These papers will not be based on research but will develop and test hypotheses. The papers are likely to be discursive and will cover philosophical discussions and comparative studies of others' work and thinking.

5) Case Study Case studies describe actual interventions or experiences within organisations. They may well be subjective and will not generally report on research. A description of a legal case or a hypothetical case study used as a teaching exercise would also fit into this category.

6) General Review

This category covers those papers which provide an overview or historical examination of some concept, technique or phenomena. The papers are likely to be more descriptive or instructional ("how to" papers) than discursive.

II. Selecting Keywords Supply up to six keywords for tagging the paper. Pick keywords that reflect the specificity of the intended paper. Avoid overarching terms like "Management" unless the paper discusses the topic with such a wide focus. Use the most common term for a concept. Do not make up new terms for an old concept. Try to think broadly: if the paper discusses industrial engineering practices in energy sector, it may be worthwhile providing the sector as a keyword. If an activity/research takes place in a particular country then supply the country's name as a keyword. III. Writing the Abstract To produce an abstract, please complete the following fields about your intended paper. There are four fields which are obligatory (Purpose, Design, Findings and Value); the other two (Research limitations/ implications and Practical implications) may be omitted if they are not applicable to your paper. Abstracts should contain no more than 250 words. Write concisely and clearly. The abstract should reflect only what would appear in the final paper.

1) Purpose of this Paper What are the reason(s) for writing the paper or the aims of the research? 2) Findings What was found in the course of the work? This will refer to analysis, discussion,

or results. 3) Research Limitations / Implications (if applicable)

If research is reported on in the paper, this section must be completed and should include suggestions for future research and any identified limitations in the research process.

4) Practical Implications (if applicable)

What outcomes and implications for practice, applications and consequences are identified? Not all papers will have practical implications but most will. What changes to practice should be made as a result of this research/paper?

5) Originality/Value of Paper What is new in the paper? State the value of the paper and to whom. 6) Design/Methodology/ Approach

How are the objectives achieved? Include the main method(s) used for the research. What is the approach to the topic and what is the theoretical or subject scope of the paper?
