Figo return • The campaign got off on the wrong foot for the Serie A pacesetters when they went down 1-0 in the Estádio José Alvalade on 12 September and had Patrick Vieira sent off. It proved a miserable return for Inter winger Luís Figo, who had spent the first six years of an illustrious career at the Lisbon club, as Marco Caneira's stunning second-half volley gave the home team a memorable success. • It was Sporting's first win against Inter home or away - they had met in two previous campaigns, the 1990/91 UEFA Cup semi-final and the third qualifying round for the 2002/03 UEFA Champions League and the four games produced matching results in Portugal (0-0) and Italy (2-0 to Inter). In each case Spartak provided the opposition and Julio Cruz the early breakthrough, his lone goal in Moscow three weeks ago being enough to divide the teams while he also grabbed the second goal in the 2-1 home win two weeks before. Their previous away game in the section had also seen them return home with a point as Nani scored a second-half equaliser in Moscow to cancel out Denis Boyarintsev's early goal for Spartak in the first UEFA Champions League match to be played on a synthetic pitch. Tough in Italy • Sporting have played ten matches in Italy and have lost seven, including all the last five. • The victory was Sporting's seventh in the Portuguese Liga this season. They have only been beaten once in theirnine games so far, on 16 September against FC Paços de Ferreira.

• Paredes faces a race against time to be fit for the Inter game after picking up a calf injury against Bayern. The30-year-old Paraguayan international had to be replaced early in the second half by fellow summer recruitPontus Farnerud and initial estimates suggested he would be out of action for a fortnight.

• Sporting followed up their goalless draw in Munich on Matchday 4 with a 3-0 defeat of Braga at the Estádio JoséAlvalade on 6 November. The Lisbon club received a significant helping hand from their opponents, however, asBraga defenders Luís Filipe and Nem both scored own goals in the first half before Alecsandro made the game safewith a third just past the hour.

• "We were lucky in the way we scored the first two goals, but we produced a balanced performance and did not allowour opponents to create chances," said Paulo Bento.

• In 13 competitive matches, Sporting centre-backs Polga and Tonel have been ever present in the heart of the Lisbonside's defence, with the exception of the league match at CD Das Aves on 23 September. Tonel started that gameon the bench but was introduced after half-time to score the second in Sporting's 2-0 win.

• Sporting have managed 17 goals in the first ten matches in the Liga this season, 15 of which have come from insidethe penalty area.

• The Lisbon club had three players in the Portugal side that defeated Kazakhstan 3-0 in UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifyingGroup A on 15 November; Ricardo and Tonel both started the match while Carlos Martins was introduced in thesecond half.

• The match was Tonel's first cap for his country having been called into the squad by Luiz Felipe Scolari for the firsttime.

• Portugal's Under-21 side continued their preparations for next summer's UEFA European Championship finals inthe Netherlands with a 3-0 defeat of fellow qualifiers Serbia in Figueira da Foz on 14 November. Sporting had twoplayers in the starting lineup: Miguel Veloso and Nani.

Competition facts

• UEFA Champions League: Group stage milestones

Olympique Lyonnais are on target for a record-breaking conclusion to their group-stage campaign in advance of theirMatchday 5 trip to Real Madrid CF. They are two wins away from becoming only the fifth team – and the first sinceFC Barcelona in 2002/03 – to win all six games in a group stage. The first to manage it were AC Milan in the inaugural1992/93 edition of the UEFA Champions League. Since then Paris Saint-Germain FC (1994/95) and FC SpartakMoskva (1995/96) have matched the achievement, before that Barça success in the last season before the competitionwas revamped into its current format.

Unwanted recordBarcelona are not having such an easy ride this time around. A draw or defeat for the title-holders at PFC Levski Sofiaand a Werder Bremen victory over Chelsea FC would make the Camp Nou side the first defending champions to failto get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes thefour seasons that featured a second group stage between 1999/00 and 2002/03.)

Clean sheetsLyon are also going for another UEFA Champions League first. No team has negotiated a group stage withoutconceding a goal but Lyon, along with FC Bayern München and PFC CSKA Moskva, could yet change that havingmanaged four clean sheets to date. In contrast FC Dynamo Kyiv and Levski Sofia have both shipped 13 goals in theirfirst four outings this term, just six short of the record number let in by Ferencvárosi TC in the 1995/96 campaign.

Shot shyFor all their defensive solidity, CSKA have only scored two goals so far. They can take comfort from the achievementof Villarreal CF last season and AS Roma in the 2002/03 first group stage, as both clubs advanced to the next phasewith just three goals to their name. Villarreal are a particularly noteworthy example, as they made it all the way to thesemi-finals in their debut campaign in the competition.

Seven enoughThe good news for those who have made a slow start but are still in contention is that seven sides have successfullynegotiated a group with only seven points. The first to do it were Legia Warszawa in 1995/96 before Bayer 04Leverkusen managed it in 1999/00 and Liverpool FC in 2001/02. FC Lokomotiv Moskva and Juventus both progressedwith seven points in 2002/03, a feat most recently achieved by Rangers FC and Bremen last term.

Freescoring UnitedThe record for most goals scored in a group stage was established by Manchester United FC in 1998/99 when theyfound the net 20 times en route to lifting the trophy. It is a mark that is unlikely to be challenged this year, with theclosest contenders being Spanish rivals Real Madrid CF and Valencia CF who have ten goals each to their name.

• UEFA Champions League: Did you know?

Domestic champions: This season's competition features 16 domestic league winners from last season, but noneof the eight groups comprising the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League features four champions. Only Group A featuresthree league winners from the last campaign with England, Spain and Bulgaria represented by their champions, namely Chelsea FC, FC Barcelona and PFC Levski Sofia. The fourth club in the group, Werder Bremen, finishedsecond in last season's Bundesliga, five points behind FC Bayern München. All of the remaining groups feature twodomestic league winners with the exception of Group H, where Belgian side RSC Anderlecht are the only champions.Group rivals AEK Athens FC were runners-up in Greece, while LOSC Lille Métropole and AC Milan were classifiedin third place in Ligue 1 and Serie A respectively. Alongside 16 champions, there are nine runners-up and six third-placedfinishers. Consecutive participations: This season, Manchester United FC have extended their consecutive participation inthe UEFA Champions League to eleven, a record in the competition. Bayern, PSV Eindhoven, Olympiacos CFP andReal Madrid CF are making their tenth consecutive appearances, one ahead of Arsenal.

Knockout streak: In qualifying for the 2005/06 knockout phase, Real Madrid CF equalled Manchester United FC'srecord of nine consecutive seasons in advancing past the group stage. While United's streak came to an end lastseason, Madrid have featured in the knockout phase every time since the 1996/97 campaign. In those nine seasons,United won the competition once while they also advanced as far as the semi-finals twice, the quarter-finals four timesand the first knockout round twice in the other eight seasons. Madrid, meanwhile, have won the competition threetimes in the last nine years while they advanced as far as the semi-finals twice and the quarter-finals twice. However,in the last two seasons their interest in the competition has ended at the first knockout round.

European return: Of all 32 clubs competing in this season's UEFA Champions League, only FC Spartak Moskvaand FC Girondins de Bordeaux did not participate in a UEFA club competition during the 2005/06 season. Indeed, the two clubs are making their first appearance in UEFA club competition since the 2003/04 season.

Past masters: Four clubs competing in the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League were involved in the competition whenit started during the 1992/93 season. AC Milan were beaten finalists (losing to Olympique de Marseille), while PSVEindhoven, PFC CSKA Moskva and FC Porto all participated in the group stage. In addition, AEK Athens FC and FCBarcelona were knocked out in the second round, the last hurdle before the group stage.

Long road for debutants: Five clubs have advanced to the group stage from the European Champion Clubs' Cupsecond qualifying round including this season's two debutants, FC København and PFC Levski Sofia. They are joinedby FC Spartak Moskva, FC Dynamo Kyiv and FC Steaua Bucuresti as clubs who had to play four matches to claimtheir place in the group stage of the competition. A debutant has not won the competition since Juventus in 1995/96,the Italian side becoming the third club to achieve this following Olympique de Marseille (1992/93, first UEFA ChampionsLeague final) and AFC Ajax (1994/95).

No qualifiers: Of the 32 clubs involved in the group stage, only AS Roma and FC Girondins de Bordeaux have yetto play a qualifying round match in order to reach the UEFA Champions League. Roma are making their fourthappearance in the competition, while Bordeaux are involved for the second time.

Pedigree: Four of the former winners of the competition since it included a group stage element from the 1992/93season are not participating in this season's UEFA Champions League, namely Olympique de Marseille (1992/93),AFC Ajax (1994/95), Juventus (1995/96) and BV Borussia Dortmund (1996/97). The last ten winners of the competition,Real Madrid CF (three), Manchester United FC, FC Bayern München, AC Milan, FC Porto, Liverpool FC and FCBarcelona are involved in this season's group stage. Only three winners from the last ten UEFA Cup finals are notinvolved in this season's UEFA Champions League group stage, namely Parma FC (1998/99), Feyenoord (2001/02)and Sevilla FC (2005/06). Liverpool and Porto have won both competitions in the past decade, while the remainingUEFA Cup winners in that time are FC Internazionale Milano, Galatasaray SK, Valencia CF and PFC CSKA Moskva.

UEFA information

Puskás rememberedHungarian and European football mourned the loss of an all-time great on Friday when Ferenc Puskás died in Budapestat the age of 79 after a long illness. Puskás won league titles in his homeland with Kispest Honvéd FC and in Spainwith Real Madrid CF, with whom he also lifted the European Champion Clubs' Cup, memorably scoring four goals inthe 7-3 defeat of Eintracht Frankfurt in 1960. On the international stage, Puskás and his Hungary team-mates capturedgold at the 1952 Olympic Games and followed that up with victories such as the 6-3 defeat of England at Wembleyon 25 November 1953.

UEFA President Lennart Johansson said: "I knew about his illness and thought that I was prepared to receive theultimate bad news. But I wasn't. Realisation that I will never see Ferenc Puskás again gives me a sense of emptinessthat, I am sure, a lot of other people are experiencing. The footballer had long since become a legend. With that leftfoot which could be velvet or pure steel, he broke all sorts of records. He went into the annals of UEFA as the onlyplayer to have scored four goals and the only one to record two hat-tricks in European finals.

"Behind the remarkable statistics was a remarkable man. In his humble way, he would deny that he had a profoundinfluence on the development of European football. But he did. What's more, his career and his life held a mirror tothe history of our continent... Ferenc Puskás once said that he loved football more than he loved life. Sadly, his lifeis now over. But football will never stop loving Ferenc Puskás."

Athens designUEFA has unveiled the new visual identity created for the 2007 UEFA Champions League final in Athens at a specialceremony in the Greek capital. The event design to be used around the UEFA Champions League final at Athens'sOlympic Stadium on 23 May was revealed at the Ceremonies Hall within the City Hall in Kotzia Square on 9 November. The UEFA Champions League final has, in recent years, been given an identity of its own with a unique logo, a designconcept and an overall theme. The objective is to help promote the final and enhance the prestige of one of the world'sbiggest sporting events.

Independent European Sports ReviewEuropean law has continued to have a major impact on sport in recent years, although the cases are less celebratedthan the 1995 Bosman case that drastically altered football. One of these was the Meca-Medina case, in whichjudgement was handed down by the European Court of Justice in a case involving two swimmers who had failed adoping test.

In a summary article and longer background essay, published on uefa.com, UEFA's director of legal affairs GianniInfantino looks at this case and related questions, especially in view of the findings of the newly-published IndependentEuropean Sports Review. The review supports recognition of sport's specific nature in European Union legislation, and the preservation and protection of the present European sports model, and asks if the Meca-Medina verdict is astep backwards for the European sports model and sports specificity.

Head coach profiles

Roberto ManciniDate of birth: 27 November 1964Nationality: ItalianPlaying career: Bologna FC, UC Sampdoria, S.S. Lazio, Leicester City FCCoaching career: ACF Fiorentina, S.S. Lazio, FC Internazionale Milano

Roberto Mancini became FC Internazionale Milano's eleventh coach since 1995 on 7 July 2004, replacing AlbertoZaccheroni one day after terminating his contract with S.S. Lazio, and is already considered one of the most stylishand promising trainers in Italy despite his age. As a player Mancini made his Serie A debut on 13 September 1981for Bologna FC, going on to play for Sampdoria UC, S.S. Lazio and Leicester City FC.

He won two Italian first division titles (one each with Sampdoria and Lazio) six Coppa Italias (four with Sampdoria, two with Lazio) and two UEFA Cup Winners' Cups (one with Sampdoria, one with Lazio). For the Italian national team,Mancini won 36 caps and scored four goals. He then started his coaching career as assistant to future Englandmanager Sven-Göran Eriksson at Lazio before replacing Fatih Terim at ACF Fiorentina in spring 2001. After leadingFiorentina to the Coppa Italia, he returned to Lazio and repeated that feat as well as steering the Roman club into theUEFA Champions League and the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup.

Inter saw him as the man to end a Serie A title drought stretching back to the 1988/89 season and for the secondtime, having done so when appointed at Lazio, Mancini replaced Zaccheroni. He immediately led the Nerazzurri toCoppa Italia glory, Inter's first domestic honour since that 1989 Scudetto. Then, after Juventus were stripped of their2005/06 title and AC Milan suffered a points penalty, Inter were finally crowned champions of Italy again. Mancini willlook to repeat that success in more conventional fashion in the 2006/07 domestic and European campaigns.

Paulo BentoDate of birth: 20 June 1969Playing career: CF Estrela da Amadora, Vitória SC, SL Benfica, Real Oviedo CF, Sporting Clube de PortugalCoaching career: Sporting Clube de Portugal

A former international midfielder who made an instant impact upon rising to the top job at Sporting Clube de Portugalin October 2005, Paulo Bento has been a winner throughout his football life. He began his playing career at CF Estrelada Amadora, helping them win the Portuguese Cup in 1989/90. He then moved on to Vitória SC before a switch toSL Benfica brought him another cup triumph in 1995/96. He then spent four seasons in Spain with Real Oviedo CF.

He returned to Portuguese football and Sporting for the 2000/01 campaign, and a season later helped them win thePortuguese double. He retired from playing at the end of 2003/04, and quickly accepted a role in the Sporting coachingsetup where he guided the youth team to the national title in 2004/05. In October 2005 he was promoted to first-teamcoach after the sacking of José Peseiro, and quickly improved the side's fortunes, leading Sporting on a run of tenstraight victories between January and April 2006.

Overall, in his 27 league games in charge in 2005/06, he achieved 18 wins and six draws, although a 1-0 defeatagainst FC Porto in a decisive meeting meant a second-place finish. Sporting also lost to Porto on a penalty shoot-outin the Portuguese Cup semi-finals but the club had seen enough for the future. He was rewarded for his efforts inensuring a 2006/07 UEFA Champions League group-stage berth with a two-year contract in May 2006. He has yetto complete the UEFA professsional coaching course, and will be assisted by Carlos Pereira.

Carlos Pereira's long association with Sporting Clube de Portugal goes back to his teenage years, having joined theclub as a 13-year-old. A left-back, he had to move away from Sporting to carve out a career at senior level with VitóriaFC, GD Estoril-Praia and CF Os Belenenses before he turned his hand to coaching.

Pereira started with Alverca Futebol in the second division, but his talents were quickly noticed by Carlos Queiroz, who brought him back to the Estádio José Alvalade in 1995 to oversee the youth teams. He would go back to Alverca, but once more returned to Sporting as assistant to Paulo Bento when the ex-Portuguese international took the helmduring the 2005/06 season.

Pereira's brother, Aurélio, also has a long association with the club as he was responsible for the development ofyoung talents such as Luís Figo, Cristiano Ronaldo and Ricardo Quaresma.

Competition information

UEFA's most prestigious club competition was originally created as the European Champion Clubs' Cup for the1955/56 season, before its revamping as the UEFA Champions League in 1992.

• Locally-trained players rule: In February 2005, UEFA announced that the 'A' list that teams submit for UEFA clubcompetitions will continue to be limited to 25 players, and from season 2006/07, at least four places on this list willbe reserved for players trained by the club's own football academy of which half can be players trained by other clubsfrom within the same association of the said club.

The 'B' list will also continue to exist - involving an unlimited number of Under-21 players who have been at the clubfor two seasons. In 2007/08, the number of locally-trained players in a squad will increase to six before rising to eightin 2008/09, with up to half of each figure allowed to be association trained.

A club-trained player is defined as a player who has been registered for a minimum of three seasons with the clubbetween the age of 15 and 21, whereas an association-trained player is one who has been registered for at leastthree seasons by the club or by other clubs affiliated to the same association between the age of 15 and 21.

UEFA is concerned some clubs are not training enough of their own players, but simply taking them from elsewhere. The proposed measures have the objective of creating a better balance in domestic competitions, preventing clubsfrom simply 'hoarding' players in squads and creating a system whereby locally-trained players would be given agreater opportunity to play regularly in club sides - ensuring a large reservoir of talent for national teams as aconsequence.

• Financial information: UEFA says the estimated budgeted income for the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League is€750m – higher than the 2005/06 campaign revenue which amounted to CHF943m (approx. €610m).

Under the competition regulations, 75 per cent of the total revenue received from television and commercial contractsconcluded by UEFA, up to a maximum of €530m will go to the 32 clubs taking part in the group stage of Europe'spremier club competition. The remaining 25 per cent is earmarked for European football and remains with UEFA tocover organisational and administrative costs, as well as for solidarity payments to associations, clubs and leagues.

It is also stipulated that participating clubs will receive 82 per cent of any revenue received from the same stream inexcess of € 530m, with the remaining 18 per cent allocated to UEFA for European football. In addition, 50 per centof the revenue received from new media contracts concluded by UEFA will also be available for distribution to theclubs, and the remaining 50 per cent will be allocated to the above-mentioned European football portion/quota.

The gross income for 2006/07 is estimated at €750m, and according to projections, will be made up of € 743.3m fromTV and commercial contracts and €6.7m from new media contracts.

The fixed amount to the clubs is €276.6m. Each of the 32 clubs in the group stage will receive a starting bonus of€2m. In addition, they will receive a match bonus of €400,000 per match. Performance bonuses will amount to €600,000for a win and €300,000 for a draw in the group stage. The 16 teams playing in the first knockout round will receive€2.2m, the eight quarter-finalists €2.5m each and the four semi-finalists €3m each. The UEFA Champions Leaguewinners will receive €7m, and the runners-up €4m.

This means that a total minimum amount of €4.4m per club is guaranteed for the group stage. A club could receive,at best, up to €22.7m, not counting the market pool share and gate receipts.

The remaining €270.4m will be distributed according to the proportional value of each TV market represented by theclubs taking part in the UEFA Champions League, and to be split among the number of teams – four, three, two orone – participating from a given association.
