Introduction

!! In 1949 the World Health Organization (WHO) first

recognized the impact of anemia and recommended

that funds be provided to study and treat this health

concern (Baker & DeMaeyer, 1979)

!!Yet, today iron deficiency is the most common,

widespread nutritional disorder in the world (WHO)

!!Currently, over 2 billion people are anemic affecting

30% of the world’s population (WHO)
