Flag Day has been celebrated in Palmyra for many years, but in this, Palmyra’s Bicentennial year, it will be bigger and better! In fact, you could say Old Glory Day is 200 years in the making!

Palmyra’s Bicentennial Old Glory Day Celebration will take place on Saturday, June 15. Festivities begin at 3 p.m. on the Courthouse Square, and wrap up at 9 p.m.

A family fun day is planned. For the kids, Full Moon Farms from Pleasant Hill, Illinois, will offer a free petting zoo and $4 pony rides from 3 – 9 p.m. Rebel Pig is providing a bounce house. Just northwest of the courthouse at Big Spring Park, the Palmyra Heritage Seekers will host free old fashioned games. The North River Old Iron Club will have antique tractors on display on the East side of the Old Marion County Jail at the corner of Lafayette and Dickerson.

Bring your appetite. Offerings will include catfish, chicken on a stick, grilled tenderloin sandwiches, corn dogs, cozy spuds, fried cheese, ice cream, snowcones, and homemade

items. All Bicentennial items will be for sale here, so don’t miss the chance to pick up Bicentennial crocks, coins, t-shirts and coloring books and buy raffle tickets for a chance to win a Bicentennial limited edition custom engraved Henry Golden Boy .22 Rifle. Vendors will be onsite from 3 – 9 p.m.

Get on your red, white and blue for the Old Glory Day Parade which begins at 6 p.m. All are welcome to participate. Parade entrants will gather in the Palmyra High School parking lot and march down Main Street to the Courthouse. Immediately following the parade the American Legion and Boy Scouts will present a special flag raising at the Courthouse.

Festivities will be topped off with a free performance by Banjoy, an award winning bluegrass band, from 7 – 9 p.m.

Nancy Goellner, Old Glory Day Chair, and her committee including Kelsie Lovelace, Lori Maddox, Bianca Strubinger and Madonna Watters have a great line up of activities to honor our country, our community and our flag. “Bring a lawn chair and spend the afternoon and evening celebrating our nation’s flag and Palmyra’s Bicentennial. We hope to provide that old Fall Festival feeling that folks enjoyed ‘back in the day,’” encourages Nancy.
