Bobby Hutcherson, widely acknowledged as one of the mostimportant vibraphonists of all time, died at his Montara home onMonday. The New York Times, quoting a family spokesman, saysthe jazz legend had been treated for emphysema.
Hutcherson was known worldwide for his ringing tones, oftencreated using two mallets in each hand. He played the Coastside’sBach Dancing and Dynamite Society, helping to cement the venue’slegacy.

He worked with luminaries like Eric Dolphy and was associatedwith classics from Blue Note Records in the 1960s and ’70s. Heremained active well into the new century, touring with SFJazzCollective in 2004. His music was universal, a truth brought homeby the fact that it was sampled by the rapper Ice Cube.
