In these confined tableaus, the artist explores theidea o
perectionism, largely inspired byphotographs and paintings rom the
Victoria eraTese women are rigid and unchanging in each
piece, trapped in a seemingly perect andbeautiul world o color
and pattern. We, theaudience, are voyeurs o these visually
busy,textured, yet static scenes.
Te artist uses lie models, posing each sceneand creating
detailed drawings. She then transi-tions these sketches into
meticulously ashionedetchings and paintings. A selection o Kyla
ZoeRaerts mixed media paintings will eature laterin Brumfield
Gallerys program.
Kyla Zoe Raert earned her Bachelor o Fine Arts in Printmaking
rom the Rhode Island School oDesign and later her Masters o Fine
Arts in Printmaking rom the University o Wisconson. Herawards
include a grant rom the Vermont Studio Center, a Fellowship with
the Womens StudioWorkshop in New York, and a Residency at the ACRE
(Artists Cooperative Residency andExhibitions) in Chicago. She has
shown extensively along the East Coast and Midwest,
includingChicago, Brooklyn, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C.
Brumfields Gallery new Featured Printmaker program runs
alongside its main gallery program.Tis show will coincide with the
gallerys exhibition o ceramics and painting by Jacquline HurlbertTe
two shows will open on Saturday, May 10 rom 7 9 p.m. at Brumfields
