This Week’s Golfing News

One of the most difficult things forthe amateur golfer to adjust to isthe long putt on the green. Longputting is a skill that is rarely prac-ticed and, consequently, wheneverwe have a very long putt toattempt, the end result is usually

not what we want. Most amatuers faced with along putt automatically go into the thoughtprocess that they need to smack the ball to getit to the hole. This thinking pattern will get youa three-putt more times than not. When you tryto kill the putt, all of the motion in your puttingstroke comes from the wrist. The ball usuallypops up off the ground and there is little to nochance for success. A long putting stroke needsto be generated by the shoulders with nothingto do with your wrists.

The International, which began in 1986 and used a modified Stableford scoring system, will no longer be on the PGA Tour schedule. PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem andtournament officials had spent the last two weeks in a final effort to find a corporate spon-sor, but talks with two potential partners fell apart. The International has been without a titlesponsor since 1999, and without any corporate sponsorship since 2003. "We had a strongprice point. We had declining ratings the last three or four years," Finchem said. "It wasn't anyone thing." The absence of Tiger Woods didn't help either, who hadn't played in the event since 1999. JackVickers, founder and president of Castle Pines Golf Club, said he was unsuccessful in getting a commitmentfrom Woods. The cancellation leaves a hole in the PGATour schedule on July 5-8, but tour officials have beenworking on a contingency plan during the last month and are expected to announce a replacement by April.

Fantasy Football

Season OutlookThe 2006-07 football season looks to be an excitingone. The Cowboys now have Terrell Owens and arelooking to bring the Lombardi Trophy back to Dallas. Peyton Manning and theIndianapolis Colts will have another good shot at not only the Super Bowl, butpossibly making another run at an undefeated season. Everyone is also waitingto see if Ben Rothleisberger can recover from his motorcycle accident and leadthe Steelers to back-to-back Super Bowls.

Draft StrategyFor the first week I will layout the strategy for drafting a good fantasy footballteam. The most important thing in fantasy football is scoring points. Runningyards and passing yards along with touchdowns and field goals help offensiveplayers score points. A team's defense is determined by the amount of yards andpoints they allow. Your starting lineup must consist of one quarterback, two run-ning backs, two receivers, one tight end, one kicker and one defensive unit.

Some things to keep in mind: Rookies rarely produce. If you have a gut feel-ing about some rookie and he is available in the last few rounds then take therisk. Something else to take into consideration is how many years a player hasbeen in the NFL. For some reason wide receivers tend to break out in their thirdyear. Also, you don't want too many players to have a bye on the same week. However, don't let this be the only reason you don't draft someone.

Running Backs - This group of players are the most sought after in fantasyfootball. Having two good running backs and a quality third running back is a must.Don't be afraid to draft running backs in the first two rounds.

Quarterbacks - There is not much differencebetween an O.K. quarterback and a good quarterback. Ifthere are no great quarterbacks in the third round thereshould be some very good wide receivers to choose from.Don't be afraid to wait until the 6th or 7th round tochoose a quarterback.

October 6-12

Mid-October is a good time to take cuttingsof plants like geraniums and coleus to rootfor next season. Other plants, like herbs and

some edibles, can be potted indoors for the winter. Youshould also continue planting spring-flowering bulbs andprepare to plant tulips before the end of the month.

Weekly Activity: Fall PruningMany plants can be pruned during this time, which will pro-tect the roots from cold damage and cause the plants to growmore vigorously in the next season. Cutting back perennialsis a good idea, but plants such as ornamental grasses are bestleft alone until after the first heavy frost. Some gardeners pre-fer to leave stands of grasses during winter, allowing them toprovide some character to the garden during the coldestmonths. Grasses can be left until spring and then cut back toreinvigorate the plant and encourage new growth.

Featured Plant: Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia spp.)Black-eyed Susan is a very hardy, drought-resistant plant thatlikes full sun and attracts butterflies and small bees. Plantscan be sown in fall and will bloom in summer or fall, pro-ducing yellow, gold, and mahogany flowers on stalks thatmay reach 2 to 3 feet in height. Black-eyed Susans can beplanted in just about any type of well-drained soil and may becut to encourage more vigorous blooming.

Get Your Heart-Friendly, Blight-Resistant PeanutsBy Luis Pons

During the past 25 years, the Agricultural Research Service's PlantScience and Water Conservation Research Laboratory in Stillwater,Okla., has produced peanut cultivars that resist Sclerotinia blight. But recently, two new varieties developed there have caused quitea stir. That's because they are the first peanut lines to possess bothblight resistance and oil with high oleic acid content. Oleic is amonounsaturated fatty acid credited with benefitting the cardiovas-cular system, as well as warding off spoilage and off-flavor instored peanut products. The cultivars--Olin, a Spanish variety, and Tamrun OL 01, a runnertype--were developed jointly in the lab's Wheat, Peanut and OtherField Crops Research Unit by plant pathologist Hassan Melouk, incooperation with Texas A&M and Oklahoma State universities.According to Melouk, the new varieties will have the greatest ben-efit in states such as Oklahoma and Texas, where most of thepeanuts grown are runner and Spanish types. He adds they willsave peanut growers millions of dollars by reducing reliance onfungicides and spoilage-related losses. The two new peanut cultivars will be jointly released soon, andseed should be available to farmers from dealers this year.Sclerotinia blight is a soil-borne disease that causes stem and pegrot. The fungus forms seedlike structures and attacks plants nearthe soil line, spreading rapidly. It survives winter in the soil andattacks again, even if other crops are rotated between peanut plant-ings.Before the release of the new cultivars, the only way of fightingthe blight was to use chemical-based fungicides, which increasesproduction costs.ARS is the chief scientific research agency of the U.S. Departmentof Agriculture.
