AMERIPATH, INC. announced thegrand opening of its new diagnosticfacility, The Center For AdvancedDiagnostics (CAD), focusing on thedetection and diagnosis of cancers.CAD’s staff includes multiple doctoral scientists with extensiveexperience and reputations in moleculargenetics, cytogenetics, flow cytometry,and pathology. CAD will be able toperform developmental work for
diagnostic manufacturers, clinicalresearch organizations and pharma-ceutical companies using AmeriPath’saccess to normal, abnormal, andcancerous tissues.
Net revenue for their second quarterincreased 33% over the same period lastyear, to $73.7 million. Net revenue forthe six months ended June 30 was$141.9 million, an increase of 32%.
AmeriPath also announced theacquisition of MedGenetics DiagnosticLaboratories, a full-service cytogeneticpractice devoted exclusively to clinicaland laboratory genetic services. Message from the Chair:
In the 1999-2000 fiscal year, the Business Development Boardcelebrated a record-breaking year and did an outstanding job ofaccomplishing our economic development goals. Our successwas made possible through your support – our membercompanies. The year brought many new challenges for the BDB,and proved to be a pivotal year for developing new initiativesand re-defining the missions of the BDB.
The InternetCoast initiative took center stage. We spentconsiderable time and effort on partnership building within theindustry cluster, growing the group from less than 20 to morethan 1,500 participants in the tri-county area. Economic development organizations withinthe neighboring South Florida counties joined in the efforts to brand South Florida as akey high-tech market. More importantly, the commitment to cooperate was formalized bythe creation of the InternetCoast Economic Development Advisory Council. The Councilbegan identifying regional issues the three counties could address to make us a morecompetitive region in the “new economy.”
Our other cluster leaders and participants continued to work together and organized jointmeetings to explore new ways to partner. They focused on retaining and recruiting keyhuman resource talent, and on solidifying working relationships within our industrystrongholds. We also supported the Equestrian Commission, and attended the WinterCosequin Festival, helping introduce BDB firms to this key sector of our county’s economy.
The PACE committee (People Available, Committed and Employed) focused ondistribution of the middle and high school videos developed in 1999. These trainingvideos are used by social studies classes around the county to reinforce the core skillsneeded from the entry-level workforce.
Our milestones and benchmarks for the year included the following:
• 4,442 primary jobs created through 35 BDB relocations and expansions. Thatnumber surpasses all records previously set by more than 500 jobs.
• 8,873 primary and secondary jobs were created in total.• Average salary for the new jobs was $51,715, well above the county average of
$32,600, and 25% higher than any previous years.• The new jobs will create a primary and secondary annual payroll of $373 million
and output of $981 million.• County taxes and fees will total $13 million annually.
New jobs are at a record high. Membership and event participation are at record highs,and our staff had a busy year helping it all happen. I’m proud to have chaired thisprominent organization in a year of exceptional economic growth during the creation ofthe region’s InternetCoast.
We can each be proud we had a hand in improving Palm Beach County’s businessclimate. The years ahead should bring accelerated change as information technology andindustry connectivity grow. This new base for future business will help us create the toolswe'll need to compete and thrive. Thanks again for helping make this the most successfulyear ever! We look forward to your continued support in the new millennium.

So, what makes you special?
“Well, our company is the only one inPalm Beach County that works forcommercial tenants exclusively. Sincewe never work for landlords and nevertake listings, there is never a conflict ofinterest. For example, other brokers arecapable of doing tenant representation,but the question is, are they going toobtain the best terms for the tenant? Arethey going to show their own listings? Ifthey don’t, you’re not seeing the wholemarket, and if they do, who gets the bestdeal – the tenant or the landlord? Its anunavoidable conflict of interest, and wesee no other way but to represent eitherlandlords or tenants . . . never both.”
What does I-T-R-A stand for?
“International Tenant RepresentativeAlliance. This is an international
affiliation of extremely successful,exclusive tenant representationcompanies, with members in almost allthe nation’s major markets. We meettogether twice a year at nationalconventions to network and share ideas,and they are some of the sharpest peopleI’ve ever met. They send me some of mybiggest clients – national companiesbased elsewhere but with a need toexpand in this area. Of course, I referclients who have needs in other areas tothem. And I always look like a herowhen I do, since the level of service andexpertise is so outstanding. You canimagine, if all you do is tenantrepresentation, all day every day, you get pretty good at it!”
How do you get paid?
“That’s the most amazing part of ourbusiness. Even though we do anenormous amount of valuable work andsave our clients thousands of dollars,they usually don’t pay us a thing! Myusual compensation is a share of theleasing fee, paid by the landlord.”
Any closing comments?
“My clients are too busy running theirbusinesses to search for space, and thennegotiate a lease. Not only that, they relyon me to get a better deal than theycould get on their own. This has becomea complex business, and unless youknow better, you risk leaving a lot on thetable in terms of money and importantlease clauses.” ■

REALTORS’ ROUND TABLE
The quarterly Realtors’ Round Tableheld in July featured Cinthia Becton,who addressed the group on industrialdevelopment and opportunities in theRiviera Beach area and answeredquestions for attendees. Gary Hines, ofthe BDB, updated everyone on newprojects including dot coms, call centersand financial services firms. The meetingwas hosted by Brown Distributing.

The InternetCoast hosted a breakfastwith Steve Forbes, CEO of Forbes, Inc.in Broward County in August.

Once again in August the BDBorganized a successful membershiporientation, hosted by Palm BeachInteractive at the Palm Beach Post.Members came to learn about BDBprogramming and benefits, and enjoyeda Post continental breakfast spread.Networking was followed by aninformative powerpoint presentation.

Cluster Councils: The BDB’s action plan centers around sixexport-oriented industry clusters that drive our localeconomy. The groups of related and complementarybusinesses share specialized infrastructure and labor marketsand face common opportunities and threats. The fiscal yearwas used to grow the individual clusters and to encouragepartnershipping among the clusters.
