THE LOREM IPSUMS SUMMER 201Counseling Corner Hi HTA Families,

I found this article on the web and thought I would share. Many parents have concerns about theirchilds behavior and this article helps parents answer the question, Is My Childs Behavior Normal?will continue the article next week. For now, I am only posting Kindergarten through third grade. I

    hope this helps many parents.

    Mahalo,Mrs. Buford

Is My Child's Behavior 'Normal'?Thanks to Nancy, a child psychologist and on-call school counselor for sending this article in!Being normal isn't always all it's chalked up to be, but sometimes parents wonder if the emotional outbursts, flightsof fancy and mood swings their children experience are par for the course or something to worry about. Here are some general developmental milestones for elementary school to help you understand your child'sprogress over the school year. Keep in mind that every child is different and may not fit perfectly into thisframework.

First Grade (Age 6)Where They Are : The average six-year old is extremely egocentric and wants to be the center of attention. She or He:

Wants to be the "best" and "first." Has boundless energy. May be oppositional, silly, brash, and critical. Cries easily; shows a variety of tension-releasing behavior. Is attached to the teacher. Has difficulty being flexible. Often considers fantasy real.

Where They're Going School isn't just about academics. Your child's teachers are also helping him grow socially. At six-years-old, your child is learning to understand himself. You can help by encouraging him as he:

Develops a positive, realistic self-concept. Learns to respect himself/herself Begins to understand their own uniqueness. Gains awareness of his/her feelings. Learns to express feelings. Learns how to participate in groups. Begins to learn from their mistakes

Second Grade (Age 7)Where They Are : At seven, kids begin to calm down a bit. They:

Begin to reason and concentrate. Worry, are self-critical, and may express a lack of confidence. Demand more of their teacher's time. Dislike being singled out, even for praise.

Where They're Going School isn't just academics. Your child's teachers are also helping her grow socially. At seven-years-old, your childis continuing to learn about herself/himself and others. You can help by encouraging him/her:

Develop a concept of herself. Begin to understand others. Gain respect for others. Build relationships with others. Develop a sense of responsibility.

THE LOREM IPSUMS SUMMER 201Counseling Corner contGrade Three (Age 8)

Where They Are: The average eightyearold is explosive, excitable, dramatic, and inquisitive. She/He: Possesses a "knowitall" attitude. Is able to assume some responsibility for her actions. Actively seeks praise. May undertake more than she can handle successfully. Is selfcritical. Recognizes the needs of others.

Where They're Going School isn't just academics. Your child's teachers are also helping him grow socially. At eight-years-old,your child is learning how to set goals and understand the consequences of their behavior. You can help byencouraging him/her as he/she:

Explores the relationship of feelings, goals, and behavior. Learns about choices and consequences. Begins setting goals. Becomes more responsible. Learns how to work with others.

GOOGLE SCIENCE FAIRAre you a student who loves science? Do you have a good idea for an experiment that youdto share with the world? In 1996, two young computer science students, Larry Page and SergeBrin, had a hypothesis that there was a better way to find information on the web. They didresearch, tested their theories and built a search engine which (eventually) changed the waypeople found information online. Larry and Sergey were fortunate to be able to get their ideafront of lots of people. But how many ideas are lost because people dont have the right forutheir talents to be discovered? We believe that science can change the worldand one way toencourage that is to celebrate and champion young scientific talent as we do athletes and popidols.

To help make todays young scientists the rock stars of tomorrow, in partnership with CERN,LEGO Group,National Geographic andScientific American , were introducing the first globalonline science competition: the Google Science Fair. Its open to students around the world whoare between the ages of 1318. All you need is access to a computer, the Internet and a webbrowser.

You may have participated in local or regional science fairs where you had to be in the samephysical space to compete with kids in your area. Now any student with an idea can participafrom anywhere, and share their idea with the world. You build and submit your projecteitherby yourself or in a team of up to threeentirely online. Students in India (or Israel or Irelanwill be able to compete with students in Canada (or Cambodia or Costa Rica) forprizes includingonceinalifetime experiences (like a trip to the Galapagos Islands with a National GeographicExplorer), scholarships and reallife work opportunities (like a fiveday trip to CERN inSwitzerland). And if youre entering a science fair locally, please feel free to post that projectonline with Google Science Fair, too!

To enter, register online (http://www.google.com/events/sciencefair/ ) and create your project

as aGoogle Site. Registration is open through April 4, 2011. Please note: you must get parentaguardian consent in order to compete. You can check out the complete ruleshere . After April 4,well begin judging and will announce our semifinalists in early May.

The semifinalist projects will be posted on our online gallery, where well encourage the publto vote for a peoples choice winner. From our list of semifinalists, well select 15 finalistsbring their projects to Google headquarters on July 11 to compete in our final, live event, whworldrenowned science judges will select a winner in each age category, as well as a grandprize winner.
