The Hawks looked to stop theirlosing streak at 9 games when theydropped the puck in Nashville onTuesday night.

The Hawks looked much better inthis game, playing well throughout, but the strong play was not enoughin the end as a redirection on a shotrom the point ended up in the backo the net and the Hawks lost or theninth time in a row.

Things did not get any easier as theytraveled to Madison Square Gardento ace the red-hot Rangers in anoriginal 6 match up. Right away youcould see that the Hawks broughttheir A game, as they scored twotimes within the rst 3 minutes othe game and added 2 more beorethe rst period was over. They heldon or a convincing 4-2 win to snaptheir 9-game losing streak.

The strong play continued whenthey nished out the road trip in Co-lumbus. Again, the Hawks came outstrong and ended the road trip with alopsided victory 6-1 Saturday.

The Hawks skates nally touchedthe United Center's ice Sunday a-ternoon with another tough game, this time against their arch-rival StLouis Blues, who have been red hot

as well, but the Hawks played an all-around disciplined game and cameaway with theirthird straightwin, 3-1. Inact, the Hawksscored 7 goalstotal against theRangers andBlues, the twoteams with ew-est goals allowedthis season.

This week thingswill not get any

easier as theHawks ace oTuesday nightwith the hatedDetroit RedWings. Letshope the boys keep up the good playas they try to get back into a homeice playo spot. Only time will tell ithis bad string is just a thing o thepast or i more problems will arise.

This season Lin came on the withlate-game heroics and helped histeam to achieve a 500 record or therst time in ve years. With the lucko the Knicks, they have New Yorkthinking a playo berth might be inorder. Look or the unheralded guard

Colts could haveNew Lookwithout PeytonBy Martin Flowers

In the past two weeks, it has seemedmore like a soap opera with the Coltsand their all-world quarterback.

Colts Owner Jim Irsay stuck his ootin his mouth when he let it be knownthat the door to Peyton Manningreturning was in doubt because oinjury. Here you have a quarterbackwho set records or endurance inplaying in games played at a positionwhere injury is a sure thing. You havea quarterback who sets the standardor other players with his dedicationto being a role model.

Peyton missed this past season be-cause o a neck injury. All season longhe worked hard to rehab and wasthere to support his team that wentthrough its worst season in a decade. So now the saga begins. Colts own-ership is looking to rebuild, save pay-roll, and look to the uture withouttheir long-time quarterback.

At 35 and with the injury Peyton su-ered, the odds o being a dominantquarterback in the NFL are againsthim. Even i he does make it back, there is no guarantee he will be in aColts uniorm. Other quarterbackslike Joe Nameth and Joe Montanahave come back rom injuries. How-ever, they did not sustain a neck in-

jury at the caliber Peyton suered.

Now here is where I take my col-umnist hat o and put on my ancap! Peyton Manning is a class actwho deserves to nish his career onhis own terms. Football is better orhaving had an ambassador like himrepresenting the league or over adecade. Sometimes it is okay to justsay he really is one o the best to everplay the game. I sincerely hope thatthe Colts ownership takes anotherlook at everything this guy has givento the league and the city his teamrepresents. This guy is in a class with

Walter Payton and the other NFLgreats!

Heating and Air,Part 4By Ron Bartlett

Air Sealing Homes or energy e-

    ciency (Part 4)

    Sealing Duct Leaks

The duct work is considered parto the thermal boundary, becausethey are ull air rom the home.

    Return air ducts

Ducts that are attached to the garage orrun through the attic and crawlspacecan create quite a bit o air leakage.Sealing the ducts in these areasshould begin near the air handler(urnace). The leaks here are un-

der higher pressure and shouldbe dealt with rst, because theycan depressurize the combustionzone o the heating equipment andcause backdrating that could leadto carbon monoxide poisoning.Seal all gaps, cracks, or open-ings with duct mastic or oilduct tape. Use the back o yourhand to nd the problem areas.Careully inspect and seal leaks at alltransition areas like bends elbows orany change o direction in the ducts. Also, dont orget to seal around thelter assembly.

    Supply Ducts

Inspect and seal these areas appro-priately. The plenum joint at the airhandler is a big concern as this hasbeen a dicult spot or HVAC in-stallers to asten. Use silicone caulkor oil duct tape instead o mastic tomake or easier access in case main-tenance is required. Seal all joints, elbows, and direction changes likeyou did or the return air ducts.

Flexible ducts should be inspectedregularly at the main duct branch to

ensure no air is leaking and or any

type o mechanical damage or ani-mal activity.

Duct boots, registers and chases, should be sealed around the wall, oor and ceilings. I the opening istoo big to be sealed with oam orcaulk, use a ridged barrier like ply-

wood, drywall or ridged oam board.Lastly, you may consider sealing osupply and return registers in unoc-cupied basements and crawlspaces.

As always, you should use commonsense and proper saety equipmentand i you are not sure about some-thing, consult with a proessional.

Arican American history is airlyknown and understood by manypeople, but it is also greatly un-known and misunderstood by mostpeople, especially the citizens o theUnited States o America. There arecomponents (both philosophical andconcrete) to be considered, dealtwith, and synchronized when study-ing the history o the Black man inAmerica. Major components to thishistory are the birth o humanity, the birth o the U.S.A., the birth oU.S. Slavery (The Peculiar Institu-tion) the most ormidable slavery inthe history o the world, the birth oU.S. Racism, and o course the birtho U.S. institutions themselves.

    Black HistoryMonthBy Kristopher K. Anderson

Its February, and in many Arican-American communities you will hear

jokes, We always get the short endo the stick. Why does Black His-tory Month have to be the shortestmonth o the year? Well thank Godit is 2012, Leap Year, we get an extraday this year!

In all seriousness, many do not knowthe history o this great month o rec-ognition. Famed Historian Carter G.Woodson began the phenomenon asNegro History Week in 1926. Theweek celebrated Frederick Douglassand Abraham Lincoln, two individu-als who at that time were two o themost notable gures who helped ad-

vance the cause o Negroes in Amer-ica. Some years later Negro HistoryWeek became Black History Month.

The American concept o recogniz-ing Arican American history hasgone international. Canada also cel-ebrates during the month o Feb-ruary, and the United Kingdomrecognizes Black History Month inOctober.

Here in the United States, the monthis celebrated with public service an-nouncements on television and radioand estivals. Elementary school cur-

riculum ocuses on Arican Ameri-cans, and i lucky, non-prots thatdeal with urban issues are able tothrow undraisers.

This is all well and good. I supportthese eorts and hope they contin-ue. However, when you look at thestate o Black America, it makes youwonder how much progress has beenmade. For every black middle man-ager who lives in a nice suburb, thereare a thousand more blacks who live

at or below the poverty line. Forevery Arican American NBA bas-ketball player, there are dozens oArican American men who do notqualiy academically or admissionto universities or an opportunity toplay basketball. Diabetes, illiteracy, poor nancial planning, and a hosto other maladies still run rampantin Arican American communities. So, what are we celebrating?

For non-blacks, I see Black Historymonth as a time or reection; it isa time to celebrate the accomplish-ments o Arican-Americans. Someaccomplishments originated romslaves who taught themselves toread. Others came rom trailblazersin a variety o mediums.

Now, how should an Arican Ameri-can celebrate Black History Month? While there is no right or wronganswer, I believe our Jewish broth-ers and sisters have a tradition weshould emulate. The Passover Sederis something I want to see Blacksbegin to observe. Seder is just nota east in the home, but it is a timeto reect on the trials and tribula-tions o the people, the highs and thelows. A ormal Seder can reect onthe history o the Jewish people romMoses to Seth Rogen.

While Arican Americans have hadlots o problems, we also have hada lot o success. It is vitally impor-tant or uture generations to knowthat. To better appreciate the pastprovides a great road map or theuture. Not orgetting our past may

help someone strive to beat the cycle

o poverty or help the young hoopstar study that much harder in or-der to gain that collegiate admission.Slothulness is not always the reasonwhy some o the actors exist in ourcommunity; however, knowing howhard Grandma had it and knowingthat her grandmother probably hadit even worst, may be the spark thatis needed to help cure your own ills.

The movie Soul Food has taught us

that Sunday dinner at Big Mom-mas house is a staple in our culture.During the month o February, letscontinue to have that dinner, butlets dine with a purpose!

Thank you or this opportunity toshare my thoughts. Keep it classyKendall County.

    Monday:Presidents Day;

    Today: PeoplesDays

    By Nadia R. Kanhai

Yesterday was Presidents Day. Howdid you observe the day? Did youcelebrate dead or living presidents?Did you enjoy the day o with am-ily? Did you grab some great Presi-dents Day sales?

How are Americans supposed to ob-serve Presidents Day? Maybe its alesson Ive orgotten rom elemen-tary school. Do we observe all presi-dents, or just George Washingtonand Abraham Lincoln, or whom theday was created? Is it just a three-dayweekend, super sales day o romschool with no mail?

O course, theres also the questiono is it Presidents Day, Presi-dents Day, or Presidents Day?But thats getting o the subject, andIve already asked too many ques-tions. (There will not be a quiz at theend o this op-ed, but there will bean extra credit opportunity.)

No matter how you did or didntobserve Presidents Day, its goneuntil next year now. (Although, i

youre so incline, you can observe

Wednesday, January 22 as Washing-tons Birthday.) Today is a new day.Today is your day. Its our day. Itsthe peoples day. Time to recognizeourselves, our eorts, our eorts,

and the road ahead. By no means do

I mean we should rest on our laurels. No, the work isnt done. Theres a lotyet to be accomplished. Thats thepoint. The world goes on. It will goon with or without presidents.

I am not belittling our president, past presidents, the presidential o-ce, or the role o the presidencyo the United Statesespecially inan election year. Indeed, it was thepresident rom whom Illinois adopt-ed its tagline, Land o Lincoln whouttered the words, governmento the people, by the people, or thepeople on that chilling day atGettysburg. We cant blame all ourproblems on the president (note tosel), nor can we give the presidentall the credit when things go well. Itsthe responsibility o We the People.

Presidents are wonderul, and theyare treacherous. I love presidential

quotes rom both Republican andHon. Michael J. Madigan, Illinois Democratic Party Chair

Democratic presidents. I wont listthem all here, but a tame samplingo my avorites include:

Let us resolve to be masters, not thevictims, o our history, controllingour own destiny without giving wayto blind suspicions and emotions.

    ~John F. Kennedy

"Mr. Gorbachev, tear down thiswall." ~Ronald W. Reagan

We must teach our children to re-solve their conicts with words, notweapons. ~Bill J. Clinton

Yet, the same president who spokethe amous words, The only thingwe have to ear is ear itsel, (Frank-lin D. Roosevelt) is the same manwho ordered the internment o loyal

Japanese Americans during WorldWar II (1942) on the day beore theone we now set aside as PresidentsDay.

The importance o presidentialelections in democratic republic we

call home is immense. The gameis erce. But at the end o the day,the responsibility o our nation lieson the shoulders o its citizens. Iyou dont want to extend the e-ort it takes to research the candi-dates and vote, look in the mirror.

    Forum FeaturesState Rep.CandidatesBy Roger Sheeman

On Monday night, three Democraticcandidates or State Representativein District #84 attended a candidateorum sponsored by the Naperville

Township Democratic Organizationat the Naperville Municipal Cent-er. A crowd o about 90 attendedthe orum. The 84th District com-prises all or some o Aurora, Boul-der Hill, Montgomery, Oswego, andNaperville.

The candidates are: Stephanie Ki-owit, currently an alderman romthe City o Aurora; Carole Cheney, the Vice Chairman o the NapervilleTownship Democratic Organization;and Alex Arroyo, ormer Chairmano the Aurora Democratic Party. The candidates drew slips with num-

bers that corresponded to a specicquestion. The orum was moderatedby NTDO secretary Jay Mitchell.

Stephanie Kiowit was asked aboutspecic long-term solutions shewould propose to acilitate a speedierreturn to state-wide nancial healthand to name one existing state pro-gram she would reduce or eliminate. She is in avor o zero-based budg-eting and says the State can longeraord to spend money it does nothave. She points to a recent audit ostate-owned vehicles, which shows25% o these vehicles are not usedenough to justiy their costs. She be-lieves the State's non-emergency aireet should be reduced, saying thatIllinois politicians do not need to beying around like corporate CEOson the taxpayers dime. She also a-vors consolidating the State Treasur-er's O ce with the State Comptrol-lers O ce. Visit stephaniekiowit.org or more inormation.

Carole Cheney was asked i she sup-ported right-to-work legislation andin her view what do unions bring tothe table. She said she is opposed

    to right-to-work legislation and that

unions bring a vital voice to the ta-ble. Like any interest group, unionsstruggle with internal politics andcompeting agendas, but ultimatelythey have a critical role in represent-ing the needs o their members. Shenoted that some o the Legislaturesmost impressive recent accomplish-ments have been marked by con-sensus and good aith negotiationsamong unions and other stakehold-ers. She points to SB7, which was aneducation reorm bill that is a good

example o unions helping to passgood legislation. For more inorma-tion visit www.electcarolecheney.com.

Alex Arroyo was asked what specicpolicy you would support to acili-tate more job growth and a speedierrecovery. Alex said he would look tocompanies outside o Illinois andencourage them to relocate in hisdistrict. He said he would travel athis own expense to other states andcountries i it would help bring anemployer here. He thinks that busi-nesses cannot bear the tax burden

or the entire state. He believes thetax burden must be shared equallyand more equitable as a whole. Hebelieves in incentives or small busi-nesses so they can expand and em-ploy more people. For more inor-mation visit www.alexarroyo2012.com.

On other issues they all agreed thatthey oppose tax breaks to largecorporations. They avor concealand carry laws, but want to see thespecics o the law beore votingor it. They all agree that same-sex marriage should be allowed.

Job Tracker TipsThe student's resume was impres-sive. The ormatting was impeccable, the content was excellent, and he dida great job o ocusing on accom-plishments instead o job duties. I I

were an employer, I would have beenimpressed.

Then I looked at his cover letter andimagined the employer tossing thatperect resume into the trash bin.

Many college students and recentgrads destroy their resumes by ac-

companying them with halheartedor downright terrible cover letters. While some employers don't botherreading cover letters, most do. Andthey will quickly eliminate you i youmake these cover letter mistakes:

    Using the Wrong Cover LetterFormat

The student's cover letter lookedmore like a cut-and-paste email thana business letter. It had no recipi-ent inormation, no return addressand no date. The letter screamedunproessional.

Be sure your cover letter uses a stand-ard business-letter ormat. It shouldinclude the date, the recipient's mail-ing address and your address.

    Making It All About You

It may seem counterintuitive, butyour cover letter, like your resume, should be about the employer asmuch as it's about you. Yes, you needto tell the employer about yoursel, but do so in the context o the em-ployer's needs and the specied jobrequirements.

Not Proong or Typos and Gram-matical Errors

Employers tend to view typos andgrammatical errors as evidence oyour carelessness and inability towrite. Prooread every letter yousend. Get additional cover letter helpby asking a riend who knows goodwriting double-check your letter oryou.

    Making Unsupported Claims

Too many cover letters rom collegestudents and recent grads say the ap-plicant has "strong written and ver-bal communication skills." Withoutevidence, it's an empty boast. Give

some examples or each claim youmake. Employers need proo.

    Writing a Novel

A good cover letter should be nolonger than one page. Employers aredeluged with resumes and cover let-ters, and their time is scarce. Makesure your cover letter has three orour concise but convincing para-graphs that are easy to read. I yourcompetitor's letter rambles on ortwo pages, guess which candidatethe employer will preer.

Using the Same Cover Letter orEvery Job and Company

Employers see so many cover let-ters that it's easy or them to tellwhen you're using a one-size-ts-allapproach. I you haven't addressedtheir company's specic concerns, they'll conclude you don't care aboutthis particular job.

    It's time-consuming but worthwhile

to customize each cover letter or thespecic job and company.

Not Sending a Real Cover Letter

Some job seekers -- college students, recent grads, and even those withyears o work experience -- don'tbother sending a cover letter withtheir resume. Others type up a one-or two-sentence "here's my resume"cover letter, while others attachhandwritten letters or sticky notes.

There is no gray area here: You mustinclude a well-written, neatly ormat-

ted cover letter with every resumeyou send. I you don't, you won't beconsidered or the job.
