U of M Extension will offer a workshop at three locations during March on the topic of Capturing Value from Manure and Alfalfa Nutrients. Loca-

tions and dates include Little Falls on March 8 at the Initia-tive Foundation building at 405 1st Street SE; Foley on March 19 at Mr. Jims Restaurant; and Melrose on March 20 at Cornerstone Restaurant. Work-shops at all three sites will start at 10 a.m. and adjourn about 2 p.m. Randy Pepin, Extension Educator with Nutrient Man-agement Projects will lead ma-

nure management discussion. State Extension Corn Agronomist Jeff Coulter will lead the discussion about alfalfa nitrogen credits at Little Falls and Melrose. At Foley, Extension Educator Dan Mar-tens will offer some discussion about alfalfa nitro-gen credits; and Benton SWCD staff will offer dis-cussion about nutrient management trials they have done and resources available. Pepins manure management discussion will build around on-farm case studies taking a basic look at using soil grid sampling information as a clue for manure application decisions. A growing number of farmers are using soil grid sampling for variable applications of lime and some other fer-tilizers. The on-farm case studies offer some ideas about how this information can be useful in making better use of manure nutrients using grid sampling or other eld observations. Some farmers are also looking at soils maps, growth and yield patterns, and other information as clues for making better use of manure nutrients. The goal is to maximize the economic value of manure and minimize hazards to water resources. Some farmers have limited acres and face challeng-es with soil phosphorus levels near surface water resources. Identifying areas of farms and elds that can make use of more or less manure can be help-ful. Manure management can be challenging be-cause of variations in analysis, availability, live-stock species, application methods and the weather. This workshop will provide an opportunity for dis-cussion about issues farmers and agronomy advi-sors face in making the best use of manure nutri-ents. After lunch, State Extension Corn Agronomist Jeff Coulter will offer discussion about nitrogen available for a corn crop following alfalfa. Farmers and agronomy advisors have asked questions about whether they can really bank on the 150 pounds of nitrogen the University says we can generally count on when breaking up alfalfa and planting corn. Coulter, along with research assistant Matt Yost, will share data from a number of on-farm research sites looking at how well alfalfa nitrogen credits play out for the following corn crop. They have found some factors that can help farmers and farm advisors with nitrogen management decisions. Field trials included a site near Pierz and Albany. The Minnesota Agricultural Fertilizer Research and Education Council provided some of the funding for this work and workshop. Pre-registration is requested for planning food, but not required. Registration will be free for the rst 30 RSVPs at each site and $5 after the rst 30. Call to register by noon the day before the work-shop. These workshops are being coordinated by Extension Educator Dan Martens. Call the Benton County Extension Of ce for more information and to register at 1-800-964-4929 or if a local call to Foley 968-5077. Registration on-site will start at 9:30 a.m. The program with start at 10 a.m. Lunch will be provided at noon. Discussion will conclude about 2 p.m.
