A Message From Your President

Tracy Nelson, Vice President of Learning & Organizational Development at Summit Credit Union

Greetings and Happy 2011! I am so pleased and excited to have the honor and privilege of serving as President of your South Central Wisconsin Chapter of ASTD! I look forward to building on the successful foundation of 2010 and working with our talented and dedicated Board of Directors to bring you a wealth of new and exciting things for our chapter in this new year! Those of you who know me well know that when I moved to Madison 12+ years ago, I didn’t know a single person in the area. One of the first things I did upon arrival was to get involved with ASTD SCWC. We workplace learning and performance professionals tend to be a very warm, friendly, outgoing bunch, so I met a slew of wonderful people very quickly, and have kept those valued friendships through the years. In fact, the career opportunity I am currently in and love came as a direct result of a connection I made years ago through ASTD! The value I have received from my involvement with the chapter over the years has been immeasurable. In ongoing member surveys, you also continue to tell us that connecting with your peers in the field is one of the most important things you want from your local chapter, and we are listening! We have more top quality monthly programs and networking events coming throughout 2011, so if you haven’t done so already, I encourage you to make this the year you reach out, engage in your chapter events, and make new friends and connections through ASTD SCWC! Our Board of Directors met on January 14th for a Strategic Planning Session, and we’ve determined some areas of focus for the chapter in 2011. First and foremost, we have recently made an investment in an application called Wild Apricot that will automate many of the manual membership and event coordination tasks, as well as upgrade our website and allow for increased interaction with our members. One of the biggest challenges faced by the Board is the recordkeeping and manual processes that get passed from one board member to the next as terms end and new Board members come in. Unfortunately, keeping continuity is quite a challenge, and we’ve been looking for ways to make significant needed improvements. We’re confident that our new integrated tool will help us streamline our membership and event management as well as upgrade the functionality of our website, all resulting in a greatly enhanced experience for you, our member. Some of you may receive a call or email in the coming weeks to confirm your membership information as we migrate to our new platform, and by all means, if you have any questions about your

membership, please reach out and give us a call. We want to ensure we have current contact information for all of our members and prospective members, and will be putting significant efforts into this in the months ahead. By mid-February, you will begin to see our new website unfold as well, with additional enhancements rolling out throughout the year. Other areas of focus include tying our monthly programming into the ASTD Competency Model, increasing membership, establishing benchmark measurements of member satisfaction, and increasing the “touch points” with new

2011 Board Goals will be finalized in the coming weeks and updated on our website, so I invite you to check there for additional details on what we’re committing to as a Board this year. Also to note, if you’ve been joining us as a guest at events, I encourage you to take a look at the increased value your local membership now offers. Your membership quickly pays for itself as you attend Chapter programs and events at the discounted member rate, including joining us for our SUMMER SAVING SERIES sessions offered June, July, and August with hot topics and great speakers, all FREE to members of ASTD SCWC! For those of you who attended

our Annual Learning Summit in November, you may recall I said in the opening that our chapter is only as strong as our members and Board Members are engaged. I assure you that your 2011 Board of Directors is full of enthusiasm and commitment for a big year ahead, and we invite you to jump in and be a part of it! Please feel free to contact me at [email protected] with any questions, comments, or feedback. Looking forward to seeing you at the next event and best wishes to all for a wonderful year ahead full of good things!

Chapter Incentive Program (ChIP) Have you ever heard of the ChIP program? The Chapter Incentive Program (ChIP) is a revenue-sharing program with national ASTD that offers our chapter an opportunity to earn additional revenue. Help our chapter remain financially strong by entering our source code, 5089, whenever you:

• Make online purchases at the ASTD store • Become a member or renew your membership to ASTD National • Register for the International Conference and Expo or TechKnowledge Conference • Participate in ASTD Certificate Programs or purchase the CPLP Learning System • Post a position with the ASTD Job Bank.

Each time you use the source code for an ASTD product or service, you are contributing to our chapter's financial health, further enabling us to accomplish our mission and goals!

Sally Kaehn, a current chapter member, recently received her CPLP certification. You can learn more about the CPLP on the national ASTD website. In addition to taking a comprehensive exam, applicants submit a work

product. Here are some details on the work product Sally submitted. My work product was “Delivering Training”. My topic of training was Microsoft Office 2007. The application consisted of a form with eight questions and release of information forms to sign, a 20-minute video of the training and showing the class participants, a facilitator’s

segment and a permission form signed by all participants filmed in the video. I focused on the three main areas of Office 2007: the Office button, the Quick Access Toolbar and the Ribbon and held the class in our computer lab so participants could be logged into their system to practice during the training.

We’re excited to announce a transition to a new web platform early this year! The new platform we will be using is called Wild Apricot, and we’re thrilled about the additional functionality it will provide and the manner in which we can use the platform to improve the online experience for our members. The decision to switch platforms was made in the fall, and shortly thereafter, ASTD National announced that they, too, were migrating to Wild Apricot. As our chapter and ASTD National move through the implementation phase, we

will be able to simplify the membership and registration processes. We will also have the ability to provide more engaging content and social interaction features, thereby increasing the value of Chapter membership. The efficiencies gained by using the new platform will reduce the amount of manual work for the Board and allow us to focus our efforts instead on continuing to provide high quality programming that is timely and relevant.

The transition process has begun and information will be shared with members as we migrate to our new platform. You can expect to find
