If you watch T.V., if you go to the mall, if you read newspapers ormagazines, you will be very aware that the middle of February isdominated by Valentines Day. Indeed, some of you may even beharboring hopes for this February 14th. If, however, you are a priest ofthe Diocese of Orlando romance will not be at the front and center of

your mind. The weekend nearest to Valentines Day almost always seemsto be the weekend of the annual Catholic AppealCatholic AppealCatholic AppealCatholic Appeal, what we havesometimes called The Bishops Appeal. Its the time when we watch avideo of the Bishop speaking about the varied work of the Diocese andasking us to make a financial contribution to ensure that the workcontinues. The Catholic AppealCatholic AppealCatholic AppealCatholic Appealcampaign is always a challenge and theclergy dont like it much, and yet - just as much as Valentines Day -

this, too, is concerned with love.

If you are a Catholic you are called to love God and to love the Church.From the very beginning of his ministry Jesus assembled a community ofdisciples; and from Pentecost onwards, when the twelve were given theHoly Spirit, it was the Spirit-filled community, what we call theChurch (with a big C) which makes Jesus present in the world. JesusChrist is now incarnate in his people or, as Saint Teresa of Avila said:Christ has no body now on earth but yours, no hands but yours, nofeet but yours. Yours are the eyes through which Christ's compassion isto look out to the earth, yours are the feet by which He is to go aboutdoing good and yours are the hands by which He is to bless us now.Individually most of us are unable to work with the poor, or universitystudents, or the children of our sister diocese in the Dominican Republic.But by supporting such works, and many others, through the CatholicCatholicCatholicCatholicAppealAppealAppealAppealeach year, we are able to play our part.

Last year we really struggled to find the amount we were asked for, andI know the economic situation is not much better this year. Like you, Icontribute to the parish through regular stewardship and through a long-term pledge to the Alive in ChristAlive in ChristAlive in ChristAlive in Christ campaign. The Catholic AppealCatholic AppealCatholic AppealCatholic Appeal is anadditional demand. I ask those of you who have given generously in thepast to continue to do so; if things are tight I invite you to do as I will

and give just a dollar a day, $365 for the year. That daily sacrifice is asign of our love for the community which God has provided to sustainus, and in this particular year it is also a sign of welcome to our newshepherd, Bishop John Noonan.
