Combating electronic warfare: 1 CBCS’ secret weaponStory & photo by Sta Sgt. Devin Boyer86th Airlift Wing Public A airs

Imagine waking up in the unknown with no knowledge of your surroundings, without a sin-gle piece of working technology. You can’t contact anyone, you can’t determine your location through GPS, and you can’t access the inter-net for how-to videos on surviv-al. Now, imagine you’re in enemy territory and bullets are zipping through the air around you.

How probable is your survival?Over the years, people have

become reliant on technology to pull them out of sticky situations. Similarly, advances in technology have propelled the way militar-ies win wars, or prevent them from happening. What happens when these technological depen-

dencies suddenly disappear? How will people function if an adver-sary blocks communications for ground forces?

When achieving a mas-ter’s degree from the National Defense University, Chief Master Sgt. Brandon Krueger, 1st Combat Communications Squadron opera-tions superintendent, dove into this topic with a 72-page thesis.

“My thesis outlines more of an expectation management and cul-tural problem within the military, than a technology problem,” he said. “There’s a focus amongst all the expeditionary communications units in the Department of Defense right now trying to fi gure out how we operate in a contested commu-nications environment.”

A struggle for the expedition-ary communications career fi eld is

Air Force’s proposed $169 billion budget focuses on ‘great power competition,’ readiness, establishing Space Forceby Charles PopeSecretary of the Air Force Public A airs

The Department of the Air Force released a $169 billion bud-get proposal Feb. 10, which for the fi rst time includes funding for the newly created U.S. Space Force while also focusing funds to help both services modernize, address threats from Russia and China, and sustain readiness.

The spending plan for fi scal year 2021 carries a $900 mil-lion increase from the previous year. But unlike 2020, funding for 2021 is apportioned differently, with $153.6 billion directed to the Air Force and $15.4 billion for the Space Force.

“Our fi scal year ‘21 budget proposal helps drive irreversible

momentum as we implement the National Defense Strategy,” said Secretary of the Air Force Barbara Barrett. “The strategic advantages the Air Force and the Space Force bring to our nation are vital. This budget allows us to meet today’s national security challenges while taking important steps toward the Air and Space Forces we need in 2030.”

The 2018 National Defense Strategy is an overarching blue-print for the entire U.S. military for defending the nation and its inter-ests. At the heart of the Department of the Air Force’s strategy for win-ning future confl icts is creating a resilient battle network that con-nects ships, ground forces, planes and satellites to fi ght together at speeds far surpassing any adver-

sary. This budget provides funds for a rapid experimentation, proto-typing and development effort sup-porting the overall Joint Staff-led initiative to connect every sensor and shooter in land, sea, air, space and cyber.

The budget proposal calls for increased investments in space as well as ensuring suffi cient com-bat power to respond decisively to any attack against the U.S. or allies. The budget proposal also addresses what the service calls “logistics under attack,” ensuring equipment, personnel and supplies are available when and where they are needed to sustain high-tempo actions in combat operations.

Specifi cally, the budget calls for spending $5.8 billion to purchase 48 F-35A Lightning II aircraft. It

provides $3 billion to purchase 15 KC-46A Pegasus tankers and $1.4 billion for 12 F-15EX fi ghters.

Research and development will grow by $1.5 billion for the Air Force to a total of $26.9 billion, which includes increased invest-ment in the burgeoning battle network — the Advanced Battle Management System — develop-ment and capability demonstra-tions connecting the joint force. Funding for research and develop-ment in the Space Force will grow to $10.3 billion from $9.8 billion in fi scal year 2020.

The budget carries $2.8 billion for continued development of the B-21 Raider, the next generation long-range bomber, and $1.5 bil-lion for upgrading and modern-izing the ground-based nuclear

force. That fi gure is nearly $1 bil-lion greater than the previous fi s-cal year, underscoring the priority attached to modernizing the aging ground-based nuclear deterrent.

“This budget moves us for-ward toward meeting the mis-sions required under the National Defense Strategy while also provid-ing room to innovate and build for the future,” said Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David L. Goldfein. “That’s the sweet spot we always want to hit. Like every budget, we didn’t get everything we put on the table, but we got a lot and the reason is our story resonated in terms of the force that we know we need to build to win.”

explaining their capabilities to cus-tomers in a way they understand. Krueger refers to it as the “Marvel movie effect.”

“People see Marvel movies and they see these wazoo communica-tions technologies that don’t really exist,” he said. “Most of my guys can’t explain to their users why they can’t get access to these kinds of technologies. What’s going to happen when our communica-tions get contested and we just have nothing? What happens to that ground force commander, or that O-6 level commander in a Joint Operations Command when they don’t have access to intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance when their satellite communica-tions are being interfered, and we go from operating in the 21st cen-tury to a World War II type of envi-ronment?”

While researching the topic for his thesis, Krueger discovered the common solution for this issue was investing in more technology. However, there isn’t a catch-all solution technology can deliver. The best technology can do is pro-vide options.

“The answer is always, ‘get more equipment,’ but the prob-lem is more nuanced than that,” Krueger said. “There’s talk about airborne platforms; maybe we make every airborne platform in the sky an airborne communica-tions relay? That’s a great idea, but what if we’re fi ghting in an anti-access/area denial environment where we can’t get airborne plat-forms overhead because they’ll get shot down from enemy integrated air defenses?”

Rather than solve the issue with more technology, Krueger suggests focusing on the cultural aspects of contested communications.

“We need to look at what we’re going to do culturally in order to get people used to the idea the communications they’ve grown used to in the Global War on Terror might not be accessible,” Krueger said. “Culturally, as a mili-tary, we began to rely more on bandwidth and data as our enemy was less likely to contest it. Now as we shift to a different environment, our reliance on bandwidth and data is huge and our adversaries’ ability to contest it is just as large.”

Being mentally prepared before conducting operations allows

ground forces to make big deci-sions they normally wouldn’t have to make.

“There was always the ability for senior leaders, even as far up as combatant commands and the Pentagon, to be able to control operations on the battlefi eld to a level we never thought possible,” he said. “If we can’t expect to have that level of control in a future confl ict, what are we doing to enable those ground forces to be able to say, ‘I don’t know if I’m doing what’s right, but I have some general commander’s intent and I know what my objectives are, and I can execute based off of those objectives.’”

In the meantime, Krueger is applying his expertise and over-all knowledge, as outlined in his thesis, to strengthen the 1st CBCS’ ability to operate in these con-tested environments.

“When I got to combat com-munications, they were already in the initial planning stages for exercise Heavy Rain,” he said. “That’s when I decided I was going to insert myself into that exercise because I have a huge interest in electronic warfare and contested communications.”

As the operations superinten-dent, Krueger’s role for Heavy Rain was to baseline their capabilities. In other words, he observed the Airmen to see what they knew while providing suggestions for improvement along the way.

“We hadn’t done an electronic warfare exercise in quite a while,” he said. “The ability to identi-fy interference and overcome its effects wasn’t really built up.”

During Heavy Rain, there wasn’t a lot of knowledge on what to do in a contested communications envi-ronment.

“If you don’t know what inter-ference looks like and your satel-lite dish goes down, how do you know if it’s interference or nor-mal maintenance wear and tear?” Krueger said.

Every time Airmen lost commu-nications, the combat communica-tors assumed it was interference. Because of this, Krueger suggested throwing in scenarios where the equipment would fail for other reasons to give them a chance to accurately identify the issue. This allowed them to become more aware of the situation in order to thwart the interference when it actually occurred.

Krueger’s goal is to move in a direction where contested communications become part of every future exercise so Airmen are better equipped during these scenarios.

“Once we develop our tech-niques, tactics and procedures, and the rest of the command feels comfortable with it, we will start rolling it out on more exercises related to agile combat employment,” he said.

Overall, Krueger’s chance to attend NDU and write a thesis on a subject important to him and his career field afforded him the opportunity to sharpen his awareness on contested com-munications. This also allows him the opportunity to provide Airmen thorough feedback, which is essential to strengthen-ing Air Force capabilities as a whole.

“That course changed my life,” he said. “I had the opportunity to get so deep into what I was studying and really become a sub-ject matter expert. The ability for enlisted members to go to school and become a master of their pro-fessional area is huge, and under-utilized in my opinion.”

between the capabilities needed to fi ght today and the capabilities that the two services require for the future, the 2021 spending plan anticipates retiring some planes to free up funding for critical new equipment. The list includes 13 KC-135 Stratotankers and 16 KC-10 Extenders; 24 C-130H Hercules, 17 B-1 Lancers and 24 RQ-4 Global Hawk Block 20/30 aircraft.

The Space Force portion of the budget refl ects a continuing shift to address the challenges and threats posed by potential adversaries.

“Space is now a contest-

ed domain which is why it is an imperative that we train and equip our forces to ensure freedom of action in space across all phases of confl ict,” said Chief of Space Operations Gen. John Raymond. “This budget provides the resourc-es we need to meet those require-ments and to deliver vital space capabilities to our joint and coali-tion forces.”

Reflecting the importance of space, the budget funds the National Security Space Launch program to ensure access to space and achieve independence from relying on launch vehicles from non-allies.

It also funds, at $2.3 billion, rapid development of Next-Gen Overhead Persistent Infrared Space and Ground systems to provide strategic missile warning.

Threaded throughout the entire budget document is a focus on people and readiness.

Funding to pay for fl ying hours increases in fi scal year 2021 to $6.6 billion. The budget envisions an increase in the Department’s force of Active Duty, Guard and Reserve by 1,500 personnel. That would bring the uniformed force to 512,100.

Since April 2018, the Air Force has increased overall readiness by

16 percent and increased readi-ness for frontline units, known as pacing squadrons, by 35 percent.

In response to challenges with military privatized family housing, the budget provides money to hire 218 additional on-site base hous-ing managers to monitor project owner actions, provide quality assurance and advocacy.

The fi scal 2021 proposal also provides funds to expand resilien-cy resources and fund programs that promote a culture of dignity and respect, including $51 million for the True North initiative, which embeds mental health profession-als, physiologists, physical thera-

pists and religious support teams within high-risk groups of a wing.

While Department of the Air Force offi cials say the 2021 budget request is the result of rigorous analysis and a series of “tough but necessary choices,” it represents only the starting point for the bud-get process.

The proposal now goes to Congress for its consideration and what is likely to be months of deliberation, debate and revisions. Under the typical schedule, the budget for the new fi scal year must be approved and signed into law by the president by Oct. 1, when the new fi scal year begins.

Airlifter of the Week: Leading, one lesson at a timeby Airman 1st Class Taylor D. Slater86th Airlift Wing Public Aairs

For one of Ramstein’s very own, ser-vant leadership began early in an Airman’s career.

In 2005, then-Airman 1st Class Hollie McCaleb, an Honor Guard member assigned to Little Rock Air Force Base, Arkansas, was the lead for a detail honoring a soldier killed in action. It was McCaleb’s duty to present the U.S. flag and recite military honors to the soldier’s family.

“It’s always tough,” he said. “But the goal is to always maintain your military bearing.”

So McCaleb did. He helped fold the flag which covered

the soldier’s casket and turned to the widow to give her the flag. But then she requested something he didn’t expect. She asked him to give the flag to her son, an 8-year-old who had been crying for the entirety of the funeral process.

This was something the young Airman wasn’t prepared for. McCaleb gathered him-self, turned to the young man, and presented the flag and military honors.

“I think I cried the whole way back to Arkansas,” McCaleb said. “But you know, that’s something that the family will never forget.”

Now Master Sgt. Hollie McCaleb, 86th Maintenance Squadron C-130J inspections section chief, argues leading others is more than a job, it’s about helping people connect with others.

McCaleb began his military career in

2004 as a maintainer at Little Rock AFB before his assignment to the base honor guard from 2005-2006. After a short time, he became the head instructor for the team.

“When you’re able to be put in a position to be in charge of people who outrank you as an A1C — even officers — it’s kind of eye-opening,” McCaleb said. “I had to train these people because they’re going to go on and train other people. And that really epitomizes what we do in the Air Force.”

McCaleb recommends any Airman to join the honor guard because of the lessons it taught him about leadership, pride and discipline.

After returning to the maintenance career field and working at Little Rock AFB for nine years, McCaleb went back into the training environment as an aerospace propulsion technical training instructor assigned to the 361st Training Squadron at Sheppard AFB from 2013 to 2017. His time as an instructor taught McCaleb humility.

“Talking to people like adults and treat-ing them like adults is the only proven way that works for everyone,” McCaleb said. “Not everyone will respond effectively by belittling them or talking down to them. And I was that guy before I became a technical instructor. I probably didn’t earn the respect of my first

few subordinates.” Both jobs helped McCaleb when he was

given orders to move to Ramstein Air Base, and eventually become inspections section chief. McCaleb credits his past experiences and mentors for teaching him to ask ques-tions and address problems right away.

“It’s still not always a perfectly paved road,” McCaleb said. “You’re not always just going to automatically click with people and get through to them, but I’ve been blessed that the people I work with are all awesome people.”

Since becoming inspections section chief, his efforts have helped reduce their overall time taken by 1,400 man-hours annually, resulting in a 43 percent increase in the number of isochronal inspections completed on or before their scheduled due date. On Jan. 14, McCaleb was recognized by leader-ship for his achievements with Airlifter of the Week, and coined by Col. Matt Husemann, 86th Airlift Wing vice commander and Chief Master Sgt. Ernesto Rendon, 86th AW com-mand chief.

However, McCaleb remained humble. It wasn’t about his achievements or his past 16 years in the Air Force. For McCaleb, it’s about shining the spotlight on his fellow Airmen’s work.

“There are a number of people, all the way up through the maintenance group, who are so on board with improving processes and helping people succeed and do better,” McCaleb said. “It’s just really cool to be part of such a supportive team. Those are things I’m definitely gonna miss when I leave here.”

COMMUNITY CORNER

by Airman First Class Abby Kersey U.S. Air Force, Dental CorpsPediatric Dental Technician

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) defi nes special health care needs (SHCN) as any physical, developmental, mental, sensory, behavioral, cognitive or emo-tional impairment or limiting condition that requires specialized medical management. Some examples are autism, Down syndrome, and sensory processing disorder. Oral health is an important part of a child’s general health and overall quality of life. When scheduling a dental appointment for a child with special needs, it is important to seek out the care of a pediatric dentist. These dental specialists have received specifi c training in a variety of behavior management techniques and are best equipped to provide safe, effective, and effi cient treatment.

When scheduling a dental appointment, it is important to identify the child as spe-cial needs in order to allow the dental team to properly prepare an appointment that is uniquely catered to your child. At the initial dental appointment, it is essential to share all aspects of your child’s medical and dental history. Behavior guidance will be easier when the dental team is aware of the child’s favorite food, friends and activities as well as common negative triggers that can cause anxiety and/or fear. Resistant behavior in the dental chair is expected and normal. Have no fear, there is no such thing as an untreatable child! If the

child is unable to cooperate for treatment, the dental team can utilize one or more adjuncts to ensure a safe and positive experience. The most common adjuncts include protective stabilization and sedation. Protective stabiliza-tion is a blanket utilized to comfortably immo-bilize the arms and legs and help the child remain still. Sedation in the form of Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas) and/or oral sedation in offi ce or general anesthesia in the operating room may also be utilized.

The fi rst step to prevent dental decay in your child is to brush your child’s teeth twice a day with a small amount of fl uoridated toothpaste. If your child doesn’t spit yet, just use a smear of toothpaste to prevent exces-sive ingestion. Flossing before bed helps immensely to prevent the development of dental cavities between the teeth. If you feel you are not able to easily accomplish these tasks, talk to your dentist about alternative approaches. Oral hygiene technique can be modifi ed to meet your child’s specifi c needs.

Lastly, do not forget to focus on a healthy diet! Children with SHCN can be fi nicky when it comes to the foods they are willing to eat, but steering clear of large amounts of sugary beverages, carbohydrates and candies will help greatly with the prevention of dental cavities.

LRMC optometry services open to all eligible family members, retirees, others

Story & photos by Marcy Sanchez Landstuhl Regional Medical Center

Landstuhl Regional Medical Center’s Optometry Clinic is reiterating appointment availability for active-duty personnel and their families, as well as space-available ser-vices to all other eligible benefi ciaries.

According to U.S. Army Capt. Todd Christensen, offi cer in charge of LRMC’s Optometry Clinic, services go beyond routine eye care and exams to include acute eye care to diagnose and treat eye injuries such as irritation, infection or foreign objects enter-ing the eye. Other services include pediatric exams for ages fi ve and above, diabetic eye exams, eyeglass prescriptions, contact lens updates, vision therapy, and driver’s license testing

While active-duty service members and their families are able to schedule optometry appointments in advance, military retirees and their family members and non-TRICARE benefi ciaries are offered appointments on a space-available basis, meaning that if an appointment is available and not already booked, then other eligible benefi ciaries may be seen in that time slot.

LRMC, the U.S. military’s largest hospital overseas, provides healthcare to benefi cia-ries according to the following basic pri-orities, as determined by DOD and TRICARE policies:• Priority 1: Active-duty service members• Priority 2: Active-duty family members

enrolled in TRICARE Prime• Priority 3: Retirees, their family mem-

bers and survivors who are enrolled in TRICARE Plus

• Priority 4: Active-duty family members who are not enrolled in TRICARE Prime

• Priority 5: All other TRICARE eligible persons

• Priority 6: Non-TRICARE eligible per-sons (e.g. general schedule federal employees, AAFES and DODDS civilian employees)

The number of available appointments can vary widely according to variables such as hospital staffi ng and support for opera-tional missions. Each month, LRMC updates the Specialty Care Availability Report that is posted online and will show which services are available to which benefi ciary category during that particular month. The report can be found at https://rhce.amedd.army.mil/landstuhl/Services/Specialty_Care_Services.html and by clicking on the image to the right or the page.

The recent Military Health System trans-formation prioritizes efforts supporting the operational readiness of the Joint Force through medical readiness, to include pro-viding benefi ciaries with access to high-quality care. With increased access to care for family members at LRMC’s Optometry Clinic, service members can focus more on their mission instead of their family mem-bers’ health care.

For more information visit: https://rhce.amedd.army.mil/landstuhl/Services/optometry.html or call 06371-9464-5762.

The day started like any other for U.S. Air Force Technical Sgt. Heather R. Sanchez, 86th Security Forces Squadron Installation

Access non-commissioned offi cer in charge. She checked emails and spoke with

Airmen at the Visitor Control Center near the West Gate. At the front of the VCC sat one of her Airmen — a “pipeliner,” who prepared for their fi rst day at their fi rst duty station.

“It’s crazy because it was Airman 1st

Class Thompson’s fi rst day on the job,” said Sanchez. “A family walks in, a hus-band, his wife, and his mom, and approach Thompson’s desk to get visitor passes. As they were fi lling out information, Thompson noticed the elderly woman appeared very faint… and that’s when it happened.”

The mother collapsed to the ground.“She’s not breathing, she’s not breathing!”

multiple Airmen said in near unison.Sanchez soon made her way to the uncon-

scious individual and took control of the scene until medical staff arrived.

“I knew I’d have to get into action, as far as doing CPR because she wasn’t breathing and remained unresponsive,” said Sanchez.

During CPR, Sanchez performed a set of 30 chest compressions in an attempt to ensure blood fl ow to the brain.

Following the chest compressions, Sanchez instructed the woman’s son on how to perform the “two-breaths,” mouth-to-mouth resuscita-tion — a standard practice in CPR following 30 chest compressions.

“So, he did the two-breaths and then I did another set of 30 chest compressions after,” said Sanchez. “On the second set of chest com-pressions, I think it was maybe the 22nd or 23rd rep, she came back. She began breathing normally, and so on and so forth.”

It wasn’t until medical help arrived, after some of the adrenaline had worn off, that Sanchez was able to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. At that moment, she real-ized she saved a life.

As luck would have it, Sanchez was a CPR instructor for three years and received addi-tional training months before the incident occurred. Sanchez followed her training in text-book fashion and as she recalled the mem-ory, she thinks that’s the key takeaway.

“A lot of times in our training we often sim-ulate and don’t practice how we play in real-world situations,” said Sanchez. “Training is paramount because when others are relying on you, you’ll only have your training to rely on.”

Sanchez was pleased to learn the woman is stable and back in good health. Sanchez said, overall, the situation made her think about her one loved ones even more.

“I grew teary-eyed because I saw this woman and thought about my mom,” said Sanchez. “My mom is around the same age and I felt shocked knowing this could have been her. Once medical assistance arrived, I had to call my mom. I just needed to check up on her.”

On Jan. 17 Sanchez received the U.S. Air Force Achievement Medal for her heroic act.

The 435th Contingency Response Support Squadron’s air advisors’ unique role allows them to engage, understand and resolve issues for U.S. allies and partner nations, which is pivotal for the strength of those partnerships and in maintaining a strategic advantage.

The air advisors, who work with partner nations in the context of aviation, recently participated in a data conference that focused on gathering and analyzing data sets for con-sulting missions..

The squadron invited a private sector con-sultant to train air advisors on new methods on data collection and analysis. They used the conference to hone their consulting skills and learn how to consolidate large volumes of information into effi cient messages.

“The objective of this workshop was to learn the skills used in the private sector to understand problems and help our clients and partner nations establish outcome-based goals, which will further our relationship and the capabilities of their militaries,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. James Bindert, 435th CRSS superintendent.

“These skills will be invaluable on every single mission when we provide briefi ngs to

the embassy, ministry of defense, and host nation leadership team,” Bindert said. “The data collection and delivery skills garnered streamlined our processes and guided our out-briefs to ensure everyone knows what is being asked of them.”

The 435th CRSS operates in a complex and contested-information environment. Mission success is heavily reliant on interoperability with allied and partner nations.

“The strategic advantage of utilizing more effective consulting will help us communicate more effectively to all parties, which will foster relations with partner nations and advance U.S. interests,” Bindert said.

“Our air advisors are the face of the U.S. government and have high reaching impact,” said Capt. Daniel McKeown, 435th CRSS assis-tant director of operations. “This workshop increased our skillset in a way that allows

us to go into any partner nation and provide immediate value. This will hopefully result in the partner nation wanting to continually work with the United States.”

Due to the success of this data analysis training, the U.S. Air Force is in the process of creating its own military-specifi c curriculum data course.

“The importance of cultivating our skills in data collection and analysis improves the way we operate when conducting air advisor missions,” Bindert said. “When we are out on a mission, we need to make sure we are representing and advancing U.S. interests in a professional and cutting edge manner.”

The skillful application of data collection, analysis/presentation practices will lead to better data-driven decisions, ensuring the security of U.S. assets, McKeown explained.

During the three-day conference, air advi-sors learned the nuances between data col-lection, analysis and presentation. They prac-ticed writing problem statements, defi ning effective objectives for analysis, and develop-ing tables, graphs, and charts to quickly and concisely convey information.

Although the 435th CRSS air advisors are U.S. Air Force assets, their success is based on their relationships with the host nation and U.S. Embassies in that foreign country, as well as their ability to tackle complex issues spe-cifi c to that region. Due to this pivotal role the 435th CRSS focuses on strengthening partner nation relationships.

“This course provided us the knowledge to deliver the partner nations options and visual data that represents their current state and status, versus where we would like to be, ideally.” Tech Sgt. Savon Scales, 435th CRSS air advisor said.

The training further built on this key focus by teaching air advisors about their audience and how to tailor their data and messages to that audience to accomplish specifi c goals.

“One of the big takeaways I received from this course was understanding who the stake-holders are for the mission and making sure we gather the correct data and communicate the situation with options and recommenda-tions that will get us to the desired future state,” said Bindert.

Valentine’s Day dates back to Roman timesby 86th Airlift Wing Public A airs

Editor’s Note: This article was published in a previous edition of the Kaiserslautern American and the information has been updated to refl ect this year’s event.

Legend says that Valentine of Terni, a friendly priest who married young couples in love, died Feb. 14, 269. That’s why Valentine’s Day is observed Feb. 14. In many countries all over the world, today is the day when husbands and wives, girlfriends and boyfriends have romantic dinners, give gifts, candy, cards and fl owers to show their love and affection.

The custom of giving fl owers goes back to ancient Rome,

where Valentine gave advice to young people, in particular regarding marriage. He did this despite Emperor Claudius’ prohibition. Claudius did not want his legionaries to get – according to Christian customs – tied to wives and houses. But

Valentine was looking for lovers, found them and married them. He passed out fl owers to young couples that were walking by the garden of

his monastery and asked the men to stay at home and not to go out into battle.

One day Em peror Claudius wanted to meet Valentine to fi nd out about his wisdom. The emperor asked that Valentine believe in Roman gods again. Then they would be friends. But the priest told him

that he never would

ask him to do so if he knew

about the glory of God and his son Christ.

During his visit with Claudius, a council member asked Valentine what he thought of the Roman gods. Valentine answered that they were demons. The council immediately requested the blasphemer’s death. During a delay Valentine asked for, he impressed the emperor with the truth of

Christian belief. Claudius was

deeply touched, but when Rome’s governor said Valentine was a magician, Claudius feared a revolt by his people and passed the priest on to Asterius, a judge, to decide

on his fate. While standing in front of the judge, Valentine performed a miracle. He made the judge’s blind daughter see again by praying and laying on of hands. Asterius and his family got baptized after that. But since their new Christian belief was counter to Roman religion, they were tortured and killed. Rome’s governor also decided to torture Valentine and behead him Feb. 14, 269.

Before he was killed, many young people visited him in jail. Also, one jail guard’s daughter came to see him several times. She helped him to keep his spirits up and told him that he did the right thing by ignoring the emperor and going

ahead with the secret messages. On the day he was to die, he left a note thanking the girl for her friendship and loyalty. He signed it with “Love from your Valentine.” That might have started the custom of exchanging love messages Feb. 14.

Valentine cards have a long tradition. Legend says that the Duke of Orleans, while in prison in the tower of London in 1415, kept sending love letters to his spouse, and not only on Feb. 14. Ever since, he is looked at as the founder of Valentine’s Day. In the 17th century, author Samuel

Pepys from London,

Perfect Dessert for Valentine’s DayPAVLOVA

Nothing makes me happier on Valentine’s day than having a yummy dessert with my spe-cial person.

Unfortunately, my busy life makes it nearly impossible to prepare one every single day; nevertheless, I o en prepare desserts during holidays or when I have special occasions at home. Pavlova is my personal favorite when it comes to des-serts and I prepare it whenever I feel like having something re-ally extraordinary.

Simple PavlovaMain ingredients needed:• 4 Large Egg whites• 1 Cup of Castor sugar• 1 tsp of White vinegar• 1/2 tbsp of Cornstarch• 1/2 tsp of Pure vanilla ex-

tract• 1/2 cup of Whipping cream• Fresh fruit (Strawberries,

kiwi fruit, raspberries, pas-sion fruit) – as per taste

• 1 tbsp of Fresh lime juice

How to prepare the Pavlova:1. Preheat the oven (adjust the

temperature to 275 degrees F). Place the rack in the oven. Prepare a baking tray with foil.

2. Now, take the egg whites and beat them with an electric mixer in a medium-sized metal bowl. Use an average speed. If you beat them on high speed, it is possible that they get overbeaten. Mix up the mixture until you see so peaks on the surface of the egg whites.

3. en add the sugar over the egg whites as per your taste. I use two-three teaspoons. Whip it properly until it is mixed well. Once I got lazy while whipping it and the end result was sugar parti-cles emerging on the surface. You do not want that to hap-pen to you, so whip it until the sugar is dissolved com-pletely.

4. Next add the combination of cornstarch and vinegar over the meringue and fold it in. I make use of a plastic spatula for folding it in. Add vanilla

and fold the mixture again.5. Now pour out your me-

ringue into a circle on the centre of the foil. I keep the edges of the meringue higher than the center por-tion, leaving a hollow space right in the center to add the toppings later. Put the me-ringue in the oven and bake it. I keep it in the oven for 1 hour and 15 minutes. But that is not mandatory; you can take it out of the oven when the egg whites turn pink in color.

6. Turn o the oven and leave the oven door slightly open so that the meringue loses its heat at room temperature. I take it out of the oven only when it is time to serve it. Carefully remove the foil and move the meringue onto the serving plate.

7. In a bowl, whisk the cream with the vanilla extract until it turns so , then pour the mixture into the center of the meringue.

8. Finally, it is time to add the fruit. My personal choice is strawberries, which are very appropriate for Valentine’s Day but you can choose your favourite. Simpy smooth the top of the cream lling on the meringue with a spatuala and garnish it with the fruit pieces as desired. is dessert is visually such

a beautiful center-piece for any romantic Valentine’s Day Din-ner and tasty too – you are sure to impress!
