A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE
Family life is about decisions. The leper in today’s gospel knew this when he said to Jesus. “If you will, you can make me clean.” Jesus knew this when he said, “I do will it.” Love is not an emotion. It is a decision to be with and for another person in “good times and bad,” even when we don’t like it.
SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
First Reading: Leviticus 13:1-2, 44-46 The Lord tells Moses and Aaron that anyone bearing the sore of leprosy must first be seen by Aaron or one of the other priests, and that as long as the sore is upon him, “He shall dwell apart, making his abode outside the camp.” Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 10:31—11:1 Paul instructs the Corinthians to do everything for the glory of God, to avoid offending others, and to be imitators of Christ. Gospel: Mark 1:40-45 Jesus takes pity on a leper and cures him of his disease with a warning not to say but to show himself to the priest and make an offering. Instead of remaining silent, the leper greatly publicized the healing, making it impossible for Jesus to enter the town openly.

READINGS FOR THE WEEKND FEBRUARY 22

SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Lent 2015
Lent Is A Sacred Time Of Preparation. Each of us has a personal journey of faith, and the great
joy of belonging to a parish community is that we are given the opportunity to journey with one another.
Prayer ~ Town wide Collaborative Lenten Evening. Together in ministry, Fr. Henry Frascadore and the local musical group Still Small Voice will lead us in an hour of reflection and song, inviting us to open our hearts and minds to a deeper relationship with God. Stations of the Cross – Every Friday Stations of the Cross will be held on a rotating basis in the West Hartford Parishes. When we pray, we are communicating with the voice of God. Prayer includes worship in the liturgy and private prayer in meditation and contemplation.
Fasting ~ The Catholic Church’s regulations on fasting require those between the ages of 18 and 59 to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, limiting themselves to one full meal and two smaller meals each day, no snacking between meals. Catholics age 14 and older abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all Fridays of Lent. Fasting reminds us that we hunger and thirst for truth, and it is only God who satisfies.
Almsgiving ~ We give alms for the poor to make a personal sacrifice and share our resources for the benefit of people in need. Let us live out the Gospel message through six of the upcoming Corporal Works of Mercy. Each week during Lent a collection or activity is planned. Please participate in as many of them as you can.
LENTEN EVENING OF REFLECTION AND SONG As we begin Lent, please join us for a collaborative evening of Reflection and Song on Tuesday February 23rd. Together in ministry, Father Henry Frascadore and the local musical group Still Small Voice invites us to open our hearts and minds to a deeper relationship with God. This event is sponsored by the WHCAE including all six West Hartford Parishes and will be held in the church sanctuary at St Peter Claver from 7:00 – 8:00 pm All are welcome. A free will donation will be collected. Signed copies of Father Frascadore's books and music CDs will be available for purchase as well.
SOUP AND LIVE STATIONS St Timothy’s Parish and St Timothy Middle School cordially invite all of the West Hartford Parishes to St Timothy’s “Lenten Soup Supper and Live Stations of the Cross” on Friday, February 20th. Please come and be our Guest for Lenten Soup (New England Clam Chowder or Minestrone Soup) and stay for Live Stations of the Cross, enacted by St Timothy Middle School students at 7:00 pm in the church. Supper will be served in St Timothy’s Gymnasium from 5:30 to 6:45 pm. Please consider joining us for Soup and staying for the Live Stations of the Cross.
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly
Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 15, 2015
“I turn to you, Lord, in time of trouble, and you fill me with the joy of salvation.”… “A leper came to Jesus and kneeling down begged him and said, ‘If you wish, you can make me clean.’ Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand, touched him, and said to him, ‘I do will it. Be made clean.’”
We read the psalms - praising, thanking, seeking forgiveness and begging assistance. Our goal should be to make the psalmist’s prayer our own. How important to turn to the Lord with great confidence whatever the circumstance, as we seek His joy and peace. It was with confidence that the leper approached the Lord, seemingly reminding Him of His ability to change his life. The words of Mark are clear describing his kneeling and attitude, earnestly asking help. What follows is the attitude and response of Jesus. Moved with pity He reached and touched, something prohibited in society at that time, and spoke a healing word. Whatever my needs, healing of a relationship, forgiveness, the gift of faith, I come to God today with great confidence. I do not need to say ‘if you wish,’ as the Lord wants what is best for me. I need only to approach Him with humility and confidence that expresses my faith and dependence on He who can do what I both want and need.

Application deadline is March 15th.
LENTEN FISH DINNER Friday, February 27th, 6:00 PM
All are welcome to a Lenten Fish Dinner on Friday, February 27th, at 6:00 pm in the St. Thomas the Apostle Parish Center at 872 Farmington Ave. Baked fish, rice, salad, dessert, coffee, and soft drinks. Advance tickets: $12 individual or $35 for a family. At the door: $15 individual or $45 for a family. For tickets contact Kevin Duprey at 860-690-5406 or [email protected]. Following dinner, the Stations of the Cross will be held at St. Thomas the Apostle Church at 7:00 pm.
In today's Gospel, a man approaches Jesus asking to be healed of his leprosy. Leprosy is a disfiguring skin disease and, in Jesus' time, people with leprosy were not permitted to have contact with people who did not have the disease. What did Jesus decide to do? He cured the man with leprosy with His healing touch! As Christians, we are also called to respond to decisions that we are asked to make for others. We have the choice to be loving, the choice to helpful, or to do nothing - but these are opportunities to show the depth of our faith. When we choose to love and to help those in need, even when it is difficult for us, Christ will always give us His grace and strength!
Contact the Faith Formation Office with any questions at 860-521-2904 or email at [email protected].
“Rejoice in the LORD and be glad, all those who obey Him! Shout for joy, all those whose hearts are pure!”
Psalm 32:11

Dear God, turn our hearts to You and help us to seek Your Kingdom by loving one another. May we remember to follow You on our Lenten journey. Help us to become holy people who are kind and loving at home, at school, and in our community. Let us never forget to thank You for sending Jesus to die for our sins so that we can live forever! We ask this in the Name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior. Amen.
The Season of Lent begins this
Wednesday, February 18th. Lent is a special time to begin our journey towards
Easter. We remember Jesus’ suffering and death, and on Ash Wednesday we
receive ashes on our foreheads to remind
us to be sorry for our sins. It is also a time to help others in need and to pray.
We invite all parishioners to join our students in praying the Stations of the Cross each Wednesday beginning on
February 25th. See below for more information.
