OutcomesTo become familiar with UDL and

comfortable with incorporating it’s principles into your lessons

Make connections between UDL, Common Core, and the Science Framework

Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

Simply put, UDL is the practice of embedding flexible strategies into curriculum during the planning process so that all students can access a variety of learning solutions.

What is it?

Universal design for learning (UDL) anticipates the needs of diverse learners.

Universal design for learning (UDL) is a framework for removing barriers by anticipating the needs of all students

Learning differs across tasks

Learning differs across development

Learning differs across individuals

The 3 premises of UDL

Principle 1: Provide Multiple Means of

Representation

Present information and content in different

ways.

The “What” of Learning

*Perception *Language, Expression, Symbols*Comprehension

Principle 1 - Representation

Learners differ in the ways that they perceive and comprehend information that is presented to them. How will you teach the content?

How will students learn the content independently?

Voki - text to speech generator that allows the user to create a personal speaking avatar that can be embedded in a website.

Wordle - a toy for generating 'word clouds' from text that you provide. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text.

Principle 1: Representation

Principle 2: Provide Multiple Means of

Action & Expression

Differentiate the ways that students can express what they know.

The “How” of Learning

*Physical Action *Expression & Communication *Executive Function

Principle 2 – Action & Expression

Learners differ in the ways that they can navigate a learning environment and express what they know.

How will students show you what they know?

How do you differentiate the ways that students can express what they know?

ToonDoo is a website that allows users to generate their own comic strips. You can create your own characters or upload your own images. ToonDoo also offers excellent community features such as voting, commenting, and sharing.

"Use Webspiration to map out ideas, organize with outlines and collaborate online with teams or colleagues."

Principle 2: Action & Expression

Principle 3: Provide Multiple Means of

Engagement

Stimulate interest and motivation for learning.

The “Why” of Learning

*Recruiting Interest *Sustaining Effort & Persistence Self-regulation

Principle 3 - Engagement

Affect represents a crucial element to learning, and learners differ markedly in the ways in which they can be engaged or motivated to learn.

How will students be engaged in the content?

How do you stimulate interest and motivation for learning?

RubiStar is a tool to help the teacher who wants to use rubrics, but does not have the time to develop them from scratch.

Glogster allows you to create "interactive posters" to communicate ideas.  Students can embedded media links, sound, and video, and then share their posters with friends.

Principle 3: Engagement

Group Discussion & Wrap-up

What additional resources/information do I need to get a better understanding of UDL?

How could a UDL activity be used to address Common Core Literacy Standards? Math Standards? Science Framework?
