Grain markets turned south again, led mostly by wheat and corn. Weakness stemmed from worldwide economic problems, the continually eroding world cash values in all grains and also from a bearish crop report issued by USDA. The report showed another drop in export projections for wheat and corn, which then pushed US wheat ending stocks to a 6-year high and corn ending stocks to a 10-year high. Soybean stats just saw minor adjustments but with a record Brazilian harvest in progress, world demand had begun to shift to South America and sales cancellations are increasing here in the US. The cattle complex was lower, seeing spillover pressure from a weak stock market and slow consumer demand. The fear of spreading economic woes across the globe have consumers nervous about any kind of purchase, and with beef still at relatively high values we see retail demand there soft as well. Feeder cattle appear to be the weaker of the two, with feedlots seeing some leverage after the inventory report showed a larger than usual number of calves outside of feedlots that will have to be placed sooner rather than later. The macro markets – financial, energies, stocks - all took another hit as world equity markets continued to get battered, mostly in China where the drip of bad economic news keeps coming. US stocks felt the pressure of the world markets, and even with a weaker dollar energies also resumed their downward march, reaching a new 13-year low. Precious metals did find some support on the weaker dollar and a rush to safety, something investors haven’t been too worried about in months. Louise Gartner Spectrum Commodities 800-888-9843

HAVE YOU SEEN THE DARK SIDE?--YOUR WORLD HAS BECOME LESS PRIVATE AND SECURE

by Frank Billmayer, Blaine County Undersheriff Recently a new search engine has been announced. This search engine will allow people to search so much more than just information or names listed somewhere on the internet, this search engine will allow you to search for devices that are connected to the internet. Think about the convenience of the wireless door locks on your house, the smart TV in your bedroom, the webcam connected to your tablet or home computer. Could somebody be monitoring your door locks, the TV programs you’re watching or watching you and your family on your webcam? If they are using the search engine Shodan ® they may very well be able to. Shodan proudly lists on their website that their program is the “Search engine for the internet of things.” Such as webcams, refrigerators, Smart TVs, buildings and power plants to name a few. Shodan markets their capability as giving a competitive advantage to businesses by allowing them to see who is using their specific products and perform empirical market analysis using that information. Shodan also allows people to see their own digital footprint and see all of the devices that they are using and if they are connected to the internet. It appears that the extent of the information available is only limited by the security of the device that is connected to the internet. If the device is unsecure, the Shodan user may be able to view all data being transmitted from the device via the internet. This could include audio from microphones, video from cameras or even the internal temperature of your home from that handy dandy wireless thermostat you installed on your wall. The interconnectedness of the internet has given us all kinds of wonderful technology and devices that exude convenience such as the wireless BBQ thermometer. So next time you put some of that prime Montana beef on the BBQ and plug in your wireless thermometer to monitor the temperature of that steak and you get carried away watching the game and pull the meat off at a tough as boot leather 212º. Don’t be surprised if you get unsolicited cookbooks, BBQ gloves or fireman’s turnouts in the mail because somebody somewhere is watching you.

Painting Lines A man was given the job of painting the white lines down the middle of a highway. On his first day he painted six miles; the next day three miles; the following day less than a mile.

When the foreman asked the man why he kept painting less each day, he replied, “I just can’t do any better. Each day I keep getting farther away from the paint can.”
