Removing Holy water from Baptismal font during Lent: It is a practice that has
become somewhat popular. While this may be a dramatic sign of thirsting and dryness, this practice does not support the two main themes of Lent: The
baptismal and the penitential. This season disposes the faithful... to celebrate the paschal mystery. which are of greater prominence in both the liturgy and
the liturgical catechesis. (Constitutional on Sacred Liturgy,109) Contrary to the balanced understanding of Lent, being a season of penance, it is also a
season rich in symbolism of water and baptism. The fasting of Lent does not include the fasting from sacramentals, such as holy water. The practice of the
Church has been to empty the holy water fonts on the days of the Sacred Tridiuum in preparation of the blessing of the water at the Easter Vigil, corre-
sponding to those days on which the Eucharist is not celebrated (i.e. Good Friday and Holy Saturday. (OLPH Liturgy Commission)

Note from Fr. KyleNote from Fr. Kyle Thursday February 11th was the anniversary of Our Blessed Mother ap-pearing to “little Bernadette” in Lourdes, France. Lourdes is a place of great spiritual and physical healing for so many pilgrims. But there is a message from Lourdes for all of us this Lent and it is summarized by Pope Emeritus Benedict, ”The message that Our Lady continues to spread in Lourdes recalls the words that Jesus spoke at the very beginning of his public mission, which we hear several times during these days of Lent: 'Repent, and believe in the Gospel,' pray and do penance. Let us accept Mary's invitation which echoes Christ's and ask her to obtain for us that we may 'enter' Lent with faith, to live this season of grace with inner joy and generous commitment.” By uniting your Lenten sacrifices and prac-tices to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the Sacred Heart of Jesus the graces won for souls is exponentially increased. Further, you will find the needed strength to persevere and truly be transformed this Lent. So ask for help from the Blessed Virgin Mother this Lent. In those moments when you want to quit, when you want to eat meat on Fridays, when you want to go back to ‘normal’ life; pray to the Blessed Mother and know that she is with you. Almost every approved apparition of Mary has the same message, repent, do penance, and pray for the conversion of sin-ners. Let us follow Her call this Lent!
In commemoration of the World Marriage Day, Feb. 14th, we will be honoring all married couples with a blessing. This day speaks to the role and values we proclaim. The theme for WMD has been perma-nently adapted as "Love One Another". This phase is the command-
ment given by Jesus in John 15:12. It speaks to us in a simple but challenging way of how our Heavenly Father wishes us to live. Loving one another is a daily decision- simple , but challenging. Prayer: Father, as we prepare for WMD, we thank you for your tremendous gift of the Sacrament of Marriage. Help us to witness to its glory by a life of grow-ing intimacy. Teach us the beauty of forgiveness so we may become more and more One in Heart, Mind and Body. Strengthen our communication and help us become living signs of your love. Make us grow more in love with the church so we may renew the Body of Christ. Make us a sign of unity in the name of Jesus, our Lord and brother. Amen

Mission Statement Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish, in union with the Roman Catholic Church, chooses to be a evangelizing people. We desire that our Faith radiate the love of Jesus by the way we think, speak, and act. We strive to share our enthusiasm for the Gospel by becoming a welcoming, forgiving, and reconciling Community. We strive to live the Gospel values that transform our families, our neighborhoods and our whole society.
Crusillos in Christianity "Short Courses in Christianity" A Cursillo is an encounter with self, Christ and others. Correctly applied, the Cursillo Movement can have very positive results in the spiritual revitalization of
the person and in turn, the world. The transference of Christ's values to others
in one's family, neighborhood, workplace, school, business, entertainment, etc., is the evangelization of environments the Cursillo promotes. The goal of Cursillo
is that Christ be the prime influence in society. The next upcoming Cursillo Week-
end for women is March 3-6 and for men is August 4-7 at the Victoria Spiritual Life Center. For more information and an application, please contact Chris Hoyt
at 785-694-3472.
mación y conversión debemos volver a Dios.

1st Sunday of Lent
“The devil said to him... ‘All this will be yours, if you worship me.’”
Jesus faced temptation, like we all do. His forty-day fast in the desert
wasn’t full of supernatural consolation and delight. He was subject to
“every temptation” and when the forty days were over, “he was hun-
gry.” In other words, he was human. Jesus’ divine nature didn’t cancel
out his human nature. He faced struggles just like we do—both physi-
cal and spiritual— in his body and his soul.
As we see in today’s Gospel, the strategy Jesus used to fight these
physical and spiritual battles was to immerse himself in God’s word.
To silence the devil during this fast, Jesus quoted Scripture. He rooted
himself in these eternal truths, relying upon them in his moments of
trial. And these sacred words had a dramatic effect. Every time Satan
tried to seduce him with a new promise, Jesus responded with a Bible
verse. And each time, Satan was silenced and had to try a new angle.
Finally, when all the devilish angles had been tried, “the devil de-
parted from him for a time.” Jesus won the victory using the weapon
of God’s word.
As we enter into the season of Lent, we can be armed in the same way.
We now embark upon a battle against our own pride, sloth, and greed
as we commit to prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Ultimately, we are
working to put God first, instead of bowing down to our selfishness
and our desire for comfort. The devil would like nothing more than to
see us “worship” him in these ways. But, instead, let’s be equipped to
proclaim—and to live—the words Jesus himself used: “You shall wor-
ship the Lord, your God, and him alone shall you serve.”
The Knights of Columbus will serve a spaghetti luncheon after Mass on Febru-ary 14th. Don't make your sweetheart cook dinner, take her to dinner with
your fellow parishioners! Free will donation.
Lenten Devotional booklets are available on the table in the back of the Church.
The rosary is recited every weekday morning at 8:00am at the church. Please consider joining us whenever possible.
