Application-Key Points

– Provide a proposed Byway Name

– Provide a strategy for maintaining and enhancing the qualities

– Provide a county map that identifies corridor boundaries as well as the location of the required qualities

Scenic Byways designated by a “Legislative Act” must go through the PA Byways Process



The Pennsylvania Program Requirements

• PA Byways are designated by PennDOT, Secretary of Transportation in support of local planning efforts to:

– Improve or enhance the look of specific roads;

– Maintain natural resources & other special qualities along specific routes; and

– Provide enhanced opportunities for funding.

Byways can be any public road – state or locally maintained - paved or unpaved!



Byways must have local support

• A road must be nominated by a governmental entity and have the support of: – County government– Regional planning agency– Tourist promotion agency and– State Legislative representatives

• And, if the road is a primary road, the municipality must prohibit new off-site advertising



THE BENEFITS IN BECOMING A PA BYWAY



• Preservation- protection of or from a resource you believe may become threatened

• Community pride – carries heightened awareness and recognition of the community. Be proud of the hidden treasures!

• Enhance/Funding - FHWA has funds available only to designated byways –

• Generate Revenue- Increased business and jobs from tourist dollars.

• Promote Tourism - may attract visitors and economic development

• Marketing-Byways are marketed by the state tourism office and be signed a Pennsylvania Byway – for free!
