The attacks on Indians in Australia have alwaysbeen a cause of big concern but nothing seems tobe working. The efforts are either insufficient ornot enough because they have taken a mon-strous shape; endangering life of our fellowIndians. It has become a cause of worry for theirfamilies.Arpit, New Zealand

The article "Empty Home Syndrome" was somoving that it made me see those people withmore respect. My question to the children of thoseelderly would be what if your children leave youalone like that? But it felt good to know that thereare places in India which can take good care ofthem.Rohit Gupta, Denmark

COVERAGE OF IRELAND IN PRAVASI TODAY MAGAZINEIn this connection, we would like to draw your attention to the fact that Ireland has a rapidlygrowing Indian community; over the 10-year period from 2000 to 2010, the community has grownfrom about 2000 to 25,000, which a significant figure is considering the size of the country. More-over, the Indian community in this country is almost entirely made up of skilled professionals in theIT, healthcare and senior management sectors. It is also among the best integrated Indian communityin the world.

A second point of interest in Ireland for Pravasi Today's readers is the fact that Ireland has a largeDiaspora abroad, which maintains close links with its country of origin. In fact, the Irish Diasporaaround the world is estimated between 60 and 70 million, whereas the total population of theRepublic of Ireland is just above 4 million. If Northern Ireland [which is a part of UK] is added, thetotal island of Ireland has a population of only about 6 million. USA alone is estimated to have about40 million Irish Americans.

Over the past decades, Ireland has had outstanding success in harnessing the political and eco-nomic strength of Irish community abroad to the nation building exercise in Ireland - includingmobilizing political support in USA and elsewhere for Irish perspectives on the Northern Irelandquestion, and generating an impressive quantum of investment into Ireland. We feel that in one of the future issues of Pravasi Today, you could commission an article on theIndian community in Ireland, as well as another article on Ireland's experience with its Diasporapolicy and the lessons that India's Diaspora policy could take from Ireland's Diaspora policy.

On theother hand, Nationalist CongressParty (NCP) spokesman D PTripathi said that his party secondsthe views of PM Singh. But on theother hand, Shiv Sena supremoBal Thackeray criticized the moveby saying that “just because NRIshave loads of money doesn’t justifytheir getting voting rights.”

Recently the Indian and Australian Prime Minis-ters, Dr. Manmohan Singh and Kevin Rudd respec-tively set on doing something substantial to resolvethe problem after a dialogue in New Delhi in themid November last year. But the racial violencebegan to loom large in Australia in the first week ofJanuary 2010 too.

It is worth mentioning that body of partly burntRanjot Singh, 25, was found on January 1, 2010, inAustralia and the very next day Nitin Garg, 21, apermanent citizen of Australia, was knife- penetrateddead. Worth underlining is the incapability of thepolice that couldn't find out the culprits. Hardly hada week passed when an attempt to murder one moreperson of Indian origin was made. Jaspreet Singh, 29,petrol - inflamed and so 15 per cent burnt, washospitalized in Melbourne city on January 9, 2009. Itwas the very same day when India received the bodyof Ranjot Singh.

"Theprinciple of common but differentiated responsibilitymust be adhered to and developed countries musthonour their commitments," he said at theCopenhagen Climate Conference 2009, just in amood of passing the buck.

Although Indian Prime Minister ManmohanSingh is known for remaining cool as a cucumberduring all types of turbulent times, this time he waskeen as mustard to support his Chinese counterpart. At the summit he said, "Parties to Kyoto Protocolshould deliver on their commitments for emissioncuts." He further added, "India has a vital stake in thesuccess of negotiations, as we are likely to be amongthe most affected by climate change".

However, tensions prevailed and talks failed at theCopenhagen Climate Summit on December 18, 2009,particularly when Chinese premier and Indian PrimeMinister both walked out of the Summit along withtheir respective delegations. It is really surprising forenvironmentalists, particularly of China and India, why the two Himalayan countries can not normalizethe border situation, remove military troops andtanks and live peacefully to retard melting of glaciersif they can take a united stand of walkout atCopenhagen.

The deadlock at Copenhagen Climate Summit hadbeen not only due to the emphasis of developedcountries, especially Japan and Europe, on establish-ment of a new agreement in place of Kyoto Protocol, but also differences among developing countries onKyoto Protocol. Small island states and poor Africannations vulnerable to climate impacts laid outdemands for a legally-binding deal tougher than theKyoto Protocol. This was opposed by richer devel-oping countries such as China, which suspecttougher action would curb their growth. Tuvalu gota suspension of negotiations until the issue could beresolved.

For a first event of this nature and magnitudethere were relatively few glitches, though manylessons for the future.

It was a pleasant surprise for many to know thatsuch a large variety of films are being producedoutside the purview and influence of Bollywood. The PFF-2010 brought to light some 45 filmsincluding documentaries as well as full-length andshort feature films; about one-half of these were incompetition categories. Nearly as many film person-alities from overseas attended the screenings, inaddition to about a thousand interested viewers. Allevents were also well-attended by media and filmcritics. In addition there were 5 topical panel discus-sions, opening and closing ceremonies, and specialevents for media and celebrities. That is the number of Pravasifilms made about 100 per year- is about 10% of thenumber of films made in India; and about 10% ofPravasi films are ever shown on big screen. Themajority of films, however, are never released orrecognized. such as: the soulful depiction of homeland nostalgia, the trial and turbulence of East-West confluence, andthe rewards of selling Exotic India- with familyrelati-ons towing the storyline. This caricaturewould prob-ably fit Bollywood films made on NRItopics as well.

Pravasi films, however, are less likely to go heavyon the Bollywood formulation of song-and-dancesequence, item numbers, remakes of classics, adapta-tion of Hollywood hits, black-and-white depiction ofvices and virtues, and everyone lives happy ever afterthe curtain drops. Rather, Pravasi filmmakers aremore likely to be exploring the gray areas of per-sonal and social conscience, capturing the interplayof varied cultures and values, portraying the dreamsand ambitions of Indian immigrants in foreign lands, preserving the essence of India's wisdom traditions, putting to test the ceremonial pride of Indian-ness,and cherry-picking what they consider the salvage-able best of the East and the West.

While a handful of successful Pravasi filmmakerscontinue to attract talent and funds, the vast major-ity have to rely on the power of passion to overcomethe dearth of finance, technology and market.Perhaps this is part of the normal process of evolu-tion. But then the whole idea of institutions andgovernance is to help mitigate the macro adversity toharness the micro potentiality. Through screenings, awards, panel discussions and casual conversations, the PFF offered a venue not only to felicitate Pravasicinema but also to facilitate its flowering in future.

A general consensus among delegates and organiz-ers prevailed at PFF-2010 to institutionalize andpromote Pravasi cinema through an initiative com-prising the following 7 POINTERS; program detailsand action plans to be worked out by the organisersin due course.

1. In this context, a "pravasi film" is DEFINED asa film: (a) produced and/or directed by an NRI (non-resident Indian), an OCI (overseas citizen of India), ora PIO (person of Indian origin); and (b) based on atheme or story somehow related to India.

2. PFF to become an annual event in early-Januaryeach year, followed by an Awards Night gala pro-gram. Both the film festival and the award night areto be privately managed and self financed.

3. A new entity called Pravasi Film DevelopmentCorporation (PFDC), along with its Secretariat andan experienced CEO, to be established in partnershipbetween the private sector and the Government.

4. PFDC to establish and develop an archive ofpravasi films in collaboration with producers over-seas.

5. PFDC to serve as a clearinghouse for informa-tion on contacts, talents and potential markets forpravasi films.

But hisdiasporic psyche straggles between the doublestandards of two-nations ending up in a bifurcatedself despite his accomplishments in profession. Andthis verily incites a zest in several denizens forclinching to one's estranged culture and ethos. Andthey have proved their prowess in safeguarding it.Amidst adversity their prudence gets streamlined tofeel the onus for upholding India. After all it is theseNRIs who have brandished Indian words in theinnards of the English lexicon and garnished Indiancuisines on the European platter. Can we forego ourgratis to impresarios like Uday Shankar? Thegrowing number of Indian gurus from teaching yogato the nitty-gritty of Hindu shastras reflects thecredence the local society has given to them. Theever burgeoning number of NRIs has a huge chunkof virtuoso professionals. Once they become arduous

to promote India through a medium like cinema, it'sbound to give a fillip to the existing awareness ofIndia abroad. India will no longer conjure up being aplace of snake charmers.

The recent Pravasi Film Festival in Delhi, held forthe first time espoused for our beleaguered brethrento show their true colours. The NRI camaraderie putup an encompassing tapestry of India and its ententecordiale with world nations. The filmmakers heavedtheir pent-up aspirations to seek solace and succourfrom their Indian counterparts. The festival lent arendezvous for this concourse to reach a communionof ideas and share bonhomie of good old days. Thethirty-five screened films proved their point fromaround 35 countries comprised of feature films, documentaries and short films. Inaugurating thefestival, Deepa Mehta let out, 'We are like childrenwho have left their mother and gone away. And wekeep coming back because the mother is so good andpulls us back'. The festival happened under the aegisof Pravasi Today, a media group which has towedalong 125 countries whose Indian Diaspora isinclined to join together for cultural exchanges.

Patricia Mohammad has a subtle background ofwomen and development studies. She wields an in-depth knowledge of gender relations in the Carib-bean society. This endows her with unique invigorat-ing ability to make films. One of her short film,Coolie Pink and Green exudes an acme of efferves-cent aestheticism through a mélange of Indian andCaribbean cultures that otherwise remains stashedaway from ordinary people. So is, Nasreen MunniKabir working with Channel 4, UK as consultant onIndian cinema. She has made nearly 100 documenta-ries and written books on Indian cinema besidessuccessfully organizing the first Indian film festival inFrance. She delights in making documentaries onlegendary actors in Hindi cinema. 'Inner life of ShahRukh Khan' for instance spills the beans over several

things that people living in India are hardly aware of.Sangeeta Dutta has written a book on Shyam Benegalfor the World Director's Series (British Film Insti-tute). Nasreen Munni Kabir took pains to captureBismillah Khan, then 86 years old, to recount his riteof passage for a man who remained in tattersamongst his own countrymen. and The History Channel among others. A softwaredeveloper in the US, Dr Sanyal has made a biopic onRajah Ram Mohun Roy wherein he delves outstartling facts of the Rajah and his exalted image inthe west quite unknown to Indian mass giving a runeven to the historians. To prove this yearningamongst NRIs towards India's legacy, documentarieslike Kheer Bhavani have come up. In India, hardlyanyone bothered to write about it far from making afilm. Red, Blue, Yellow, Green is a Mauritian film towatch out for its puerile fervour relating trivialevents that sophisticated society misses out in its madrace. Chehere shot in UK and India streaks acrossfrom the first half of the twentieth century ramblingoodles of vintage memory.

NRI cinema mostly comes up with a shoestringbudget unlike shenanigans of Bollywood drainingour state exchequer. These Bollywood shoot theirscenes in foreign locales. Then why not have thesame from NRIs at a bargain? To rule the Indianroost, NRI filmmakers need to tap home video andtelevision markets for selling their films in India.Marketing of films is as integrating as making thefilm. The story needs to cast riveting effect upon itsviewers. Almost all the film-makers present duringthe festival were equivocal of the dire need toincrease the selling of films by introducing a market

section. The exquisiteness of NRI films is its cinematheque

flowing from persons who have waded pan nationalcultures finally to reach at a holistic perceptionbereft of all the dross that accumulates when done byresident citizens of one particular country. BothBollywood and Hollywood have their limitation. This invigorating outreach of NRIs is salubrious tothe populace of resident Indians. By and largeBollywood churns out drivel stuff that fester thecredulous minds of the hoi polloi. The Indianviewers also need to rouse up to seeing worthwhilecontent and not merely hanker after stars. Thethematic undercurrent that surfaced during PravasiFilm Festival shimmered with aesthetic culturalappeal and broad perceptions imbued with societaland national concern. This precisely remains shornoff in our Bollywood cinema. Hasn't some of thebest English writings come from these NRIs? HadNirad C Cahudhuri done a tandem act of filming toonew vistas might have opened up? Then why notaccord due impetus to the Indian Diaspora to usher amaverick genre to relegate our moribundBollywood?

recognition, there are many more who have the will, talent and the funds to do so. The hindrance at timesis the lack of the technical knowhow or interactionwith the right people from this field. Sitting awayfrom India, away from Bollywood, sometimes, theykill their desires. I think it will be a fabulous idea tohave conferences or forums where the talent canmeet at a more informal level and interact to enhancethe knowledge of the NRIs in the field of filmmaking. There are people out there who want tomake films only if they can interact with the rightpeople closer to them.

What kind of strategy do you think should beadopted to make short films made forIndian Diaspora reach them?It is difficult to reach the Indian Diaspora, however, it's not impossible. The bestmedium, I feel is a film festival. We shouldhave more festivals and at many morelocations. I think this will do the trick.Festivals attract the right audience whichappreciates such films. Television is also agreat medium, albeit, saturated and chancesof getting lost amidst channel surfing isparamount.

As an NRI how do you rate Pravasi FilmFestival? And, what kind of role can thisFestival play to bring all the NRI film makersunder one roof?I feel this is an excellent platform to nurture, recognize and honor the work of NRI film makersand artists. We should promote this heavily andmake this a yearly event. The focus should be tobring a larger variety of films and artists and in time, aim to make the awards of PFF as the most covetedaward for the NRI film fraternity.

Which are the films that you liked most in thePFF 2010?Although, I could not see all, but out of what I saw, Iliked - 'Coffee Shop on the Moon', 'Life Goes On','Azizan Mastani' and 'Mother'. It was an appreciableeffort by all the people involved and I would like totake this opportunity to congratulate everyone, whohad their films previewed and all those who wonawards.

People of Indian Origin who have been livingabroad for years and still feel for their coun-try. Do you think PFF should organize itssmall versions in different countries as well?Yes we should organize this in different countries ordifferent continents. This will enable a wider NRIaudience to view and appreciate the efforts of fellowNRIs.

You are an actor and film maker also. What isyour suggestion to make PFF work as a bridgefor Indian and NRI film makers?Besides the NRI film makers who have got the

both a wife and a daughter, and at

times a very lonely woman. Soha said

that she "quite" liked herself on the

Deepa Mehta"So I feel complete when I make a film I can

'smell'," said eminent filmmaker Deepa Mehta

when she expressed that in her earlier years while

staying overseas, she could not relate to the foreign

characters. Pointing towards the celluloid frames

from the mainstream part, she said that the

acceptance levels had changed all over the world

and people overseas related better to the main-

stream than to the art cinema from the Bollywood.

On being asked why she picks dark subjects while

revealing her next project, she said that

this was not true and subjects she did

not know about fascinated her a lot. On

being asked why her films are Diaspora-

oriented, she said that its not that she

had not made films on topics apart

from the Diaspora community, but the

fact is that "I was myself so bored of

watching them. In fact, I would

recommend that all of you should also

not watch them." Expressing her inner feelings, she said that

called upon the film industry in India to support the

Pravasi Film Festival initiative and referred to the

affinity in themes. He also added that women

appeared to be doing very well as far as NRI

filmmakers are concerned; with Mira Nair, Deepa

Mehta, Gurinder Chadha, and now Sangeeta Dutta

dominating the domain. He also felt that the Festival

should be held in Mumbai as that the NRI films

being shown in the capital city are made accessible

to the distributors and buyers

as well. He advised the NRI

filmmakers of not only

having the Indian markets in

their mind while making their

films, as that would hamper

them selling their films in the

overseas. "It's a great begin-

While discussing about Flavours, a debut project by Raj Nidimoru,

and an official selection at the Cairo, Milan and Bangkok film

festivals, Former Miss India-USA Pooja Kumar Mathur said that

"there are many untold stories about Indian-Americans, especially

women, and how they interact with the American community." She

also confessed that it is difficult to find distributors for films made by

non-resident Indians. But in the same breath she also sounded

pessimistic while saying that, "but you mustn't forget that it took

Meera Nair 20 long years to establish herself. After Slumdog Million-

aire won the Oscars and became a rage across the globe, there is a ray

of hope for Indian filmmakers abroad." On the other hand, Ameri-

can Desi girl Purva Bedi, who inaugurated the four-day festival

with Deepa Mehta summed up her sentiments on the question of

being an NRI as: "I didn't want to be called an NRI. But I realize

now that we are different, children who have left home. Coming to

India is like coming back to a mother's home. Bedi said that she had

found it very challenging to give her character (in Extrospection) a new

identity as she played a Tamil woman without knowing the

language or the culture since she is of north Indian parent-

age.

Tolstoy laid the epigram And life goes on in hisWar and Peace. Its universal candour lapping up allvicissitudes find cinema-verite like Life goes onriveting on its viewers. A Pravasi Indian embattlesvolatile existence for a foothold. Often his set ofcredoes congeals into more morbid form. London-based director Sangeeta Datta takes delight inimaging warped psyche caught between two cultures. The esoteric cast of Om Puri, Sharmila Tagore andher whittled chip Soha Ali Khan pulls the strings onits viewers.

Puri stands out as the alter ego of his protégéGirish Karnad, a professionally successful man; yetfalls prey to some morbid credos and parochial viewsthat cocks-up his filial ties proving detrimental to hisfamily. This didactic tenor exposes chink in thearmour of all and sundry however established onemay be, and so the dire need to placate these deficitstowards holistic benefits to reap optimal effects.Karnad has ever been a virtuoso actor to bring outthe nuances of mental perplexity and predicament. This portrayal of self-atrocious process remains aneye-opener.

In the film, the father vehemently reacts tosmoother out his daughters beatnik sense percep-tions but for the timely intervention of Puri, theimpasse gets bailed out. Puri plays a sensitive role inhis epic style of grin and bear panache working out astrategy most laudable. Soha remains a femmeterrible, stereotype of youth crabbiness andrevelry who is least concerned of riftbetween religions. A sudden death in the

family starts a six-day ordeal till the day of funeral. So many things have to be learnt and unlearnt byvarious members. Even Puri at a critical junctureloses balance to finally gain his composure.

Sangeeta makes a realistic depiction of windfallsand pitfalls that may befall in such situation. Familyobligations over personal pursuits of profession maybe right to some while to others the other wayround. The plot squared plethora of such dilemmas.

The settings of the film are realistic that everyDiaspora hits upon to reckon as barking up thewrong tree. Biting dust in an alien land skews hisperceptions finally to get steamrolled into perspicac-ity. A life ought to exude resilience and not succumbto adversity and neither should its ephemeral naturedeter the effervescence of life. Sangeeta seamlesslyblends didactic tenor with stark reality and comicrelief. Karnads aversion towards Islam stems out ofpast events of Indo-Pak partition. The cast is verywell-chosen. The film is bound to strike chord withBengali community though others would not be leftin the lurch.

FALSE WILL AND FABRICATED RECORD ENTRIESIn a very interesting case, the share of our client inthe ancestral coparcenary property of his deceasedfather was taken over by his brother on the basis of afalse and fabricated will. The client was residing inCanada, whereas the property and the client'sbrother were based in India. The latter threatened toalienate the land in dispute on the basis of frivolousentries made in his favour in the Revenue Records. The client had lost all hopes of recovering hisproperty. He then contacted us for legal advice andwe assured him of our best possible efforts in thecase. We on behalf of our client filed a suit fordeclaration praying for the following reliefs:1. That the plaintiff be declared as the lawful owner

of his share of the ancestral coparcenary property,on the basis of his birth right in such property as acoparcener.

2. That the alleged will be declared as a fabricateddocument and the entries made in the Revenuerecords on the basis of such will be held as illegal

and inoperative against the plaintiff with respectto his rights in the property in dispute.Apart from this, we also prayed for a decree for

grant of permanent injunction restraining thedefendant from alienating or encumbering in anymanner the property in issue.

The reliefs so requested by us were granted infavour of our client. The purported will was held tobe null and void and our client was declared to be thelawful owner of the property in question.

EVICTION OF PROPERTYOur client was a 56 year old qualified doctor, practicing in the United States. She was the ownerand landlord of a shop-cum-flat in Chandigarh whichwas in possession of the tenants on rent. Being anIndian citizen our client desired to come back toIndia and intended to run her own clinic in the non-residential portion of the premises in question. Sherequired the possession of her property for bona fideneeds of occupation and residence but the tenantsrefused to vacate it. To help her out of this we filedan Ejectment petition under Section 13 of the EastPunjab Urban Rent Restriction Act for ejection ofthe tenants from the said property on the followinggrounds:

DIVORCEIn one of the matrimonial cases handled by ourlawyers, our client was a resident of a village innorthern India. She got married to a US resident inMarch 1999. Their marriage was solemnized accord-ing to Hindu rites at Ludhiana and was got dulyregistered under the Hindu Marriage Act. Till April, the husband and wife lived together in India andthereafter both of them left for the US, the husbandon a work visa and his wife on a dependant visa. Onreaching the US, the husband told our client that hewanted to severe his wedlock with her as was in arelationship with another girl. He abused andinsulted her in every possible manner and meted outacts of mental and physical cruelty to her. Shortlythereafter, the husband abandoned the matrimonialhome, leaving our client all alone abroad. Due to theacts of cruelty of her husband our client sufferedfrom depression for which she had to take medicaltreatment at her own cost. Being not very conversantwith the legal procedures pertaining to matrimonialreliefs, our client contacted us from the US andnarrated her woes. We immediately advised her tomove the Indian Courts for divorce. On basis of theabove facts we filed a petition for divorce undersection 13 of the Hindu Marriage Act on behalf ofher. We pleaded that:1. The husband had deserted his wife for the last

more than two years without any reasonable causeor reason.

2. The husband had treated his wife with cruelty ofthe gravest nature which caused a reasonableapprehension in the mind of the petitioner that itwould be injurious to livewith him.

3. The marriage had brokendown irretrievably and thereis no chance of reconciliationbetween the parties.

1. Non payment of rent by the tenants.2. Tenants being guilty of change of user of the

premises in violation of the local bye-laws.3. Tenants being guilty of committing a number

of acts impairing the value and utility of thepremises in question.

4. Bona fide requirement of the premises for ownuse of the petitioner. The Ejectment Petition was accepted by the

Courts and through an Ejection Order the tenantswere directed to put the petitioner in possession ofthe property in issue.

FORGED POWER OF ATTORNEYIn a very challenging case pertaining to forgedPower of Attorney, our client was a non-residentIndian residing in the United Kingdom. He wasthe owner of a three-storey residential building inIndia with full proprietary rights thereof onfreehold basis. A close relative of our client, whowas in physical possession of this building, enteredinto an Agreement to Sell the said property on thebasis of a General Power of Attorney purported tobe executed in favour of him by our client. Butour client contended that he had at no point oftime executed any such General Power of Attor-ney and as such the same was fictitious, forged andfraudulent. On behalf of our client we moved theCourt for the following reliefs through a Suit forDeclaration:1. That the General Power of Attorney alleged to

be executed by the plaintiff in favour of thedefendant is a forged, inoperative and non-estdocument.

2. Consequently, the agreement to sell the saidproperty, executed by the defendant on thebasis of the said General Power of Attorney isvoid and has no binding effect on the propri-etary rights of the plaintiff.

3. Defendants have no right whatsoever to claimany interest in the suit property or and as suchthey are trespassers over the said propertythrough wrongful possession of it.

4. Permanent Injunction restraining the defen-dants from handing over the possession of thesuit property to anyone. The Court decreed the suit in favour of our

all round the globe and quite nonchalantly holds itsown in the midst of fierce competition from theshorter forms of the game. Even the players whostand to make far too much money far too easily andindeed quickly in Twenty/20 tournaments admit toTest cricket having that unparalleled joy and charmmissing in the shorter and faster versions of thegame.

The recently concluded series between Englandand South Africa had all the essential ingredients thatthe crowds have come to expect over the years fromTest Cricket - excitement, tension and extremecompetitiveness. Neither side prepared to give aninch to the opposition. It may have changed thedefinition of good old fashioned sporting spirit andcricket being a gentlemen's game but with thechange of culture in the society in general, this wasbound to happen. The batsmen may not walk bythemselves when out but at least, they don't standon the pitch arguing with the umpires and makingimpolite gestures as happens for example, in football.

However, the game has still maintained its oldadage - the game of glorious uncertainties, and theding dong battle for supremacy between the twoteams proved that point beyond question.

The series between Australia and Pakistan showedfor the umpteenth time the fighting spirit that theAustralian team possesses and its never-say-diedetermination. They have proved this time and timeagain, but never so conclusively and stylishly as theydid by winning the second Test after being in such ahopeless situation that even their most ardent fanswouldn't have given them a chance in hell and theresult seemed a foregone conclusion. But MikeHussey and the Australian bowlers had differentideas and pulled themselves up to turn the impend-ing defeat into a sensational victory that onlyAustralia seems to be capable of achieving. Amaz-ingly, despite so much opposition to Test cricketfrom different corners, the matches both in Australiaand South Africa were played to packed houses.

Even the series between India and Bangladesh was

he recent Test series between Interna-tional teams around the world hasdemonstrated beyond doubt theattraction, passion and the fascinationthat Test cricket holds for cricket fansT

not without spice and spine. Contrary to VirendraSehwag's impolite and incorrect estimation ofBangladesh being an ordinary team, the hosts foughttooth and nail with the team rated to be number onein the world and gave them a scare they are notlikely to forget in a hurry. Once again, it was theredoubtable hero of Indian cricket - SachinTendulkar - who rescued the team from the depthsof disaster to a place of reasonable safety where theplayers were able to regroup and perform some-where to their true potential.

All this goes to prove that Test cricket is verymuch alive and kicking and with tender loving careand slight adjustment, should enjoy a long andhealthy life. One point that comes instantly to mindis the duration. Unless interrupted by the weather, not many games seem to stretch to five days. So theduration can conveniently be reduced to 4 days. TheTest format seems to have profited from the shorterforms in the sense that there is hardly a dull momentin the game. Even Bangladesh, despite losing the firstTest maintained a faster scoring rate and theirexciting wicket keeper batsman Mushfiqur Rahimmanaged to score a century in 114 balls - the fastestby a Bangladeshi batsman, which was quite com-mendable under the circumstances.

I feel that the above example should remove allniggling doubts about the Test cricket being on itslast legs and with the popularityit is enjoying all over the worldat present I have an uncannyfeeling that Chris Gayle maynot have his wish of seeingTest Cricket die fulfil in hislifetime !!!!

my inquisitiveness, I started searching for variousscenic beauties, and could not stop myself paying anindelible visit to the land of thousand gardens.Although this conversation and my trip to Hazaribagdates roughly a long time back, I still cannot erasethose riveting records from my memory's album.

Rich in flora and fauna, Hazaribag's tranquilsurroundings makes it one of the busiest spots inJharkhand. Being a part of the Chotanagpur plateau, the place is adorned with plateaus, mountains, valleys, and of course swathes of forests. The place isalso known for its health resorts too. Its nomencla-ture owes its credit to the 45 per cent of the regionbeing covered with dense forests. The land ofHazaribag is also an abode to several ores andminerals, with mica and coal counted as the promi-nent ones. The climate is also favourable for thetourists thronging here throughout the year.

Hazaribag is home to some of the most famoustourist spots not only in the eastern part of India, butalso along the entire length and breadth of thecountry. So, let us start a pleasure trip in the land ofthousand gardens.

Hazaribag is the host to one of the most enthral-ling and captivating national parks in the country.Spread over an area of 150 square miles with adedicated right-free forest covering 80 square miles, the park is embellished with a plethora of flora andfauna. With the presence of wild bears, nilgai (bluebull), chital (axis deer), tigers, bears, it turns out to bea precise destination for wildlife tourists and eco-lovers. One can also look for some of the besttropical woodlands and grassy meadows inside thepremises of the park. Apart from the National Park, one can always pay visit to the Hazaribag lake andthe nearby Swarna Jayanti Park and a famouscafeteria tucked nearby.

Hazaribag is also a perfect destination for religioustourism. The famous temple of Chhinnamastka Devi, located at the cuddling point of rivers Damodar andBehra, is thickly populated with devotees throughoutthe year, paying their respect to the idols of Maa Kali,Hanuman, Surya Dev, and Ashtdhari. A large fair isalso held every year on vernal equinox (MakarSankranti). The illustrious 400-year old Bhadrakalitemple is situated approximately 60 kilometers fromthe district headquarters in Itkhori. Considered to bean important religious place for Shaivites,Vaishnavites, Buddhists and Jains, Gomed stone-constructed idol of Maa Bhadrakali could be spottedin the temple. A large number of other religiousceremonies are held throughout the year. A six-kilometer travel away from Hazaribag on theBarkagaon road will bring one to an ancient templeof Lord Narsingh (Lord Vishnu). A large assemblageof devotees throngs this temple during KartikPurnima (full moon day in the auspicious month ofKartik) too. The place is host to temples of Dasha-watar, Surya Dev, Maa Kali, and Hanuman also.

Located 60 kilometers from Hazaribag, Surajkundis known for its two hot and one cold spring. Thetemperature of water in the hot springs is 169-190degree Fahrenheit or 87 degree Celsius. The spring isthought out to be one of the hottest hot water springsin India. Due to high sulphur content in the water, itis also considered to have curative power. There arefive other kunds namely Surya Kund, LakshmanKund, Brahm Kund, Ram Kund and Sita Kund in theproximity of Surajkund. A Durga temple in thevicinity of the place is also known for its vast gather-ing. On the auspicious occasion of vernal equinox, a

large fair is held here. Surajkund is also in the list ofthose tourists who love to travel during the wintersbecause of its hot spring.

Raj Derwah, located in the middle of the HazaribagNational Park is a hotcake-like spot amongst thevisitors. Although shooting is strictly impermissiblehere, the scenic bungalow located about six kilometersfrom Hazaribag-Barhi road is a nice hang-out placehere. Despite the absence of electricity and cookingfacilities in the bungalow, a large number of touristspay a visit to catch a coup d'oeil of the beautiful watertower here.

Some other spots worth a visit include the famousTilaiya and Konar dams; the Canary and Silwar hills.Lying on Barakar river, around 130 miles above itsembracing spot with Damodar, Tilaiya was the firstmulti-purpose dam built by Damodar Valley Corpora-tion. The dam and its nearby greenery and low-lyinghills are counted amongst the favourable destinationsfor the vacationers. Along with this, terrace gardensand Picnic Island with motorboats and swimmingspots nearby the dam remain thickly populated duringthe vacation periods. The Konar dam is well knownfor a small settlement nearby thronged with numeroustrees by the DVC authorities. Situated about 51kilometers southeast of Hazaribag, the dam alsodoubles up as a picnic spot. The Canary hill, situatedaround three kilometers from Hazaribag, is niche to aDak Bungalow along with a beautiful picnic spotnearby. A nearby forest is frequented by wild animals,a cynosure of the tourists' eyes. The Silwar hill ishome to a number of old images of various gods. It issaid that a temple was constructed here where idols ofLord Jagannath, Balbhadra and Subhadra were set up.The place is now also known as 'Jagannath Dham' bythe devotees.

Hazaribag, thus, metamorphoses itself into a one-stop destination for adventure, wildlife and religioustourists in Jharkhand. One can easily spend a pie oftheir quality time and jaunt out for an expedition tothis land of thousand forests.

number of copies sold ever since the evolution of printing technology. We know that when the thousands of poor Indians were taken away tofar off lands like Fiji, Mauritius, Trinidad, more than a century ago, bythe British to work as farm labour there, the one book they carried withthem along with their measly belongings was a pocket edition ofRamcharit Manas. And even after a century of the influence of the alienlocal language and culture, it still occupies a place in their prayer rooms.

What prompted Dr. Aruna Sitesh to wield her pen on such oft-repeated subject? We all are well aware of her interest in English litera-ture, as a teacher for 3-4 decades and as a creative writer of repute ofHindi fiction. But, what could be so novel in this subject that motivatedher to produce this book? But soon my query was answered. The blurbclearly stated that it was an "abridged version of Ramcharit Manas for agrowing section of the present-day reader, both in India and abroad, characterized by preference for English language and shortage of time."

But preparing an abridged version of an Epic written originally inAvadhi and venerated by millions and millions for centuries is no less achallenging job. Some ardent devotees could wonder how a single wordcould be dropped without distorting the text they revere and consecrate? But the preface adequately explains the grounds on which the work wasdone i.e. prudent pruning of the original in a manner that retains theflavor of the original and keeps intact the moral, ethical, literary andaesthetic content of Manas which lends it the semblance of a scripture.

It fact the work carried out to abridge the Manas was originallycarried out by Dr. Sitesh Alok which was published as Manas Mangal, inHindi some time ago. And convinced by its approach and the outcome,Dr. Aruna Sitesh decided to render it into english for the benefit ofwider readership. It is unfortunate that this work (her sixteenth book)could not be published during her lifetime and was released only on herfirst death anniversary.

As a translator, Dr Sitesh has succeeded in maintaining the readabilityand cogency of the original poetic narrative to make it more accessibleand enjoyable to a reader not imbued with poetic sensibility and meta-phorical idiom employed by Tulasidas.

The glossary of places, rivers, words etc. at the end adds immensevalue to the volume and will certainly be of great help to the readers, particularly those not so familiar with Indian culture.

Altogether the readers, I believe, will feel rewarded when they gothrough this well-meant, well translated and well-produced version ofthe time tested epic.

With the real estate market in India slated tomultiply four fold by 2010 to $45-50 billion, it isnot surprising that foreign investors are eager toshare the gains from an investment in the country.

For Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and Persons ofIndian Origin (PIO), investment in Indian realestate is monetarily rewarding and emotionallygratifying, as it helps maintain bonds with theirhomeland.
