My wife and I have just returned from a wonderful trip to South and Central America. The weather was generally terrific with temperatures in the mid 80’s, humidity in the low 90s and the air a little thin in Quito, Ecuador at nearly 9,000 feet. In Memory….

Central Park Tennis Club recently lost Tom Ismon in his ongoing battle with cancer. Tom formerly served on the club board, was a dedicated & supportive member and a good friend who loved all that CPTC had to offer. All our best goes out to Joyce, his two daughters, Carrie and Debbie, and their families.

For those of you who didn't know Tom, he had survived multiple bouts with cancer and was eager to get back on the courts and share his wisdom on a multitude of topics. He would chal-lenge and encourage you at the same time, while not hesitating to share a good word or sto-ry.

We will miss you, Tom, along with your sense of humor and resilient spirit.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 on Friday, February 10 at the Mercer Island Presbyterian Church followed by a reception at the Seattle Yacht Club.

All correspondence can be sent to Joyce at: 6761 W. Mercer Way

With the new year, President Tad Rolfe has selected our 2012 Nominating Co-Chairs. Thank you to Susan Lammers and Dan Stumpf for taking on this task. Their committee members John Iwanski (current board member), Gordon Schaeffer (previous board member), Tara McRoberts, Fred Pessl and Neil Roberts, for their important work for our club in selecting 2012 nominees for new board positions. The club’s board con-sists of 9 members (plus the past year’s president) who serve 3-year terms. These 9 members rotate so that each year 3 members complete their service and 3 new members are elected, giving us a good mix of experienced and new people on the board. If you are interested or have a suggestion for a candidate, please contact one of these committee members.

The Facilities Committee continues to work on completing the Reed Building viewing area and Teen Lounge. And yes, all the fun finishing touches of the new building.

The Finance Committee will begin reviewing our insurance needs and review how we are meeting our budget with new members and new building expenses in full swing.

The Tennis Committee continues to monitor our court situations and considers a variety of aspects for court allocations as they best meet the needs of our membership. They also weigh input from the Cup Committee, the tennis staff and admin staff. It is a tough job and they have lively discussions at every monthly meeting. And the busy “doers and party planners” of the club right now, the Membership Committee, has kept Samantha running since the day she started. I think after the snow and ice storm, our decision to move forward with the Grand Opening was welcomed - espe-cially for those who had been stuck inside their homes for most of that week. Followed by an opportunity to enjoy a week of the New Building/40th Anniversary celebrations - from Happy Hour, to wearing all white, to the Wooden Racquet Mixer and rootbeer floats, the pro exhibition and the condensed Friday Night Mixer—Samantha worked diligently to make sure people knew what was going on and once they were here—enjoy themselves. The final Open House event was a great success! Donations from local and national companies made the event for our members and for our community one to put down for the records! Thank you to our ten-nis pros and our volunteers for stepping in and making a day to remember!

Start thinking about where you would like to get involved. Our committee sign ups will coincide with the Board election at the end of May so if you are interested, we would love to have you involved at any level!

FINANCE

Year End Financial Wrap-up

As everyone was able to see we wrapped up 2011 with a new building close to completion. And the financial statements of the Club reflect the financial impact of the project. As we neared completion at the end of the year we had incurred about $3,1000,000 in long-term debt and payables to finance the pro-ject, with some additional debt to be incurred in January and February of this year as the project wraps up.

Separate from that the balance sheet shows the Club to be in good financial condition. Largely due to new members joining the Club we have a strong cash position and our regular payable amounts related to Club operations are within the normal range. This allows us to easily cover our current payables.

On the income statement, excluding the new building project, we are showing revenue about 1% lower than expected and ex-penses 3% lower than expected. The net result is we show a small surplus for the year compared to a small budgeted loss.

The next meeting will be Wednesday, February 22, 2012.

TENNIS Chair Kent Lundgren

During its January meeting the Tennis Committee considered but took no action on two allocation requests for men's dou-bles. The Committee approved a motion to play USTA day-time matches in one time period instead of two. Joann Pearson and Pat Barthe agreed to form a subcommittee to analyze court usage in detail and to make recommendations to the Commit-tee.

Committee Members: Frank Alexandro, John Barnes, Patrick Barthe, Julie Bernstein, Cathy Rouske, Julie Dreyfoos, Joann Pearson, Kim Skorupa, Cheryl Leidle, Winnie Kwan, Swain Porter, James Scott, Chris Pearson, Ross Finke (Board liaison)

FACILITIES Chair Kristi Caggiano

As the committee chair, I have received many positive com-ments and words of gratitude regarding the finishing touches in the new building. However, it would be misdirected if not shared with entire committee: Susan Finke, Kristin Grobstok, Hank Jones, Winnie Kwan, John Leidle, Cher-yl Munoz, and Russ Nomi. As a group, we consistently considered the importance of this project and the impact our recommendations would have on the members. I am hopeful this thoughtful decision making process is reflected in the completed project. I continue to be impressed with the multi-ple responsibilities Julie and Vlad regularly take on to en-sure Central Park is a premiere tennis destination. Thank you for your continued hard work.

MEMBERSHIP Chair Lynda Ardern

The Membership committee is pleased to report that the number of membership inquiries increased significantly in December to 35 from a monthly average of 20. There were 11 tours given and 9 new members were signed. Congratulations, Samantha!

The allocation of the 9 memberships were 5 new and 4 resigning memberships.

The monthly meeting was focused on planning the Opening events and selecting the winning 40th anniversary design from 34 great designs. Congratulations to all participants.

CUP Chair Kim Skorupa

The Cups committee met on Monday, January 9th and continued discussions with captains about cup makeup for next year. As we look at adjusting guidelines for the 2012/2013 season we are keeping in mind these two guiding principles:

1. Ensuring that all players who want to participate in cups have the opportunity to do so at their level. Players who choose to participate are asked to commit to being availa-ble for 65% of matches and practices.

2. Ensuring that the job of captain is manageable and that they have teams that allow them to adequately field 3 courts for the 20+ week season. Captains are asked to equally distribute playing time to their players.

The Cups committee is considering the following items for change for the following year:

1. Allowing partnerships to be made up of 3 players to al-low those players who can’t meet the 65% commitment to still participate as a regular member

2. Allowing single signups at every cup level 3. Reviewing the %ages for moving up a cup level 4. Identifying if there is a need to create a method for mov-

ing down cup levels 5. Identifying how to incorporate new members who join

the club after teams are created

We hope to have decisions in place by March of 2012.

We currently have almost 100 ladies participating in 7 teams for cups this year with over 30 people designated as subs.

If you are new to the club and are thinking about participating in cups next year, look for signup information coming in March. We have to have our final team count by June to ensure that there is space for our teams in the League. League play starts in September of 2012 and runs into March of 2013.

FIT2PLAY

“you get fit to play tennis; you don’t get fit playing tennis” -- Unknown

Sometimes fitness is underrated and given the cold shoulder, but if we put as much thought into our fitness as we put into our latte, we might be surprised at the outcome.

“Nothing can substitute for just plain hard work. I had to put in the time to get back. And it was a grind. It meant

training and sweating every day. But I was completely committed to working out to prove to myself that I still

could do it.”~Andre Agassi

We hear words or sayings such as fitness, work out, I want to get fit, I don’t have any endurance…but what do we really mean and how will “being fit” help us?

Physical fitness has 5 components: 1. Muscular endurance- is the ability of a muscle to exert force continuously over time. **“Tennis requires the strength to hit or run to the ball numerous times during the course of a point, game, set or match. Muscular endurance will help your body quickly recover from prolonged points and be ready to perform again with minimal "rest."” “It's one-on-one out there, man. There ain't no hiding. I can't pass the ball.”

~Pete Sampras

2. Muscular strength- is the amount of force a muscle can produce in a single max effort. *Satoshi Ochi, MA, CSCS*D USTA: Tennis requires great muscular strength and a great fitness level. **“Tennis is an impact game, and each time you strike or run for the tennis ball your body absorbs serious impact. To withstand this force you need both upper and lower body strength. Thus, including strength training in your off-court workout is a smart move.” “The serve was invented so that the net could play.” ~Bill Cosby

3. Flexibility- is the range of motion around a joint; can you bend down and touch your toes…your knees? **“The quick starts and stops in tennis, reaching for overheads and serves and lunging and stretching for wide shots, all test your body’s flexi-bility. Having a consistent stretching routine as part of your tennis preparation will help you avoid injuries associated with these movements and improve your overall health. An effective stretching routine includes both dynamic stretching before practice or competition and a slow controlled stretching routine after.

4. Body composition- is the ratio of body fat to lean tissue (muscle). Muscle is more metabolically active then fat. **“The lean tissue (muscle) drives your body and gives you the ability to perform tasks, such as tennis, requiring strength and power. Combin-ing strength training with a consistent cardiovascular exercise regimen will help you reduce body fat and increase your lean tissue. This strategy can help you develop more strength, power and speed for playing tennis.”

5. Cardiovascular endurance- is the ability of the heart, lungs and the blood to deliver oxygen to your working muscles and tissues, as well as your body to utilize that oxygen. **“I often describe tennis as "a marathon comprised of several mini-sprints." “During the course of a match you cover a lot of ground, which is the "marathon." But within each point, game, set and match, you also per-form countless mini-sprints running to the ball.” “My fitness is unbelievable right now. I don’t get tired. I’ve been working ever since right after Charleston. Even before that,

I decided to really work on my fitness.”~Serena Williams in Paris

The demands of tennis are not equal; some muscle groups are overworked while others are ignored. Injuries such as tennis elbow and rotator cuff problems can come from those muscle imbalances. You don’t have to be a professional to treat yourself like one!
