INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE
Deer Park is pleased to announce that the International Baccalaureate (IB) has authorized the school to offer the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP). After great effort and dedication on the part of the teachers, students, administration, and parents, Deer Park is now an official IB World School.
Deer Park has been working towards IB PYP authorization over the past three years.
This authorization makes Deer Park one of only two elementary schools in the state of Kentucky authorized to offer the Primary Years Programme (PYP).
Deer Park Elementary School officially joins the ranks of 874 other elementary institutions, including private schools and academies, magnet schools and charter schools in 141 countries, to offer this comprehensive educational model and rigorous curriculum in which students develop knowledge, skills and attitudes that prepare them to live, work and lead in a constantly changing world.
As a part of the IB PYP, Deer Park offers weekly instruction in Spanish to all students, K-5. We also plan to add instruction in Chinese beginning the 2012-2013 school year, in partnership
with the WKU Confucius Institute.
What is so special about IB programmes?
•IB programmes are recognized around the world.
•IB World Schools must undergo an exhaustive authorization process in order to offer one of the programmes.
•IB teachers participate in a wide variety of professional development opportunities to constantly update their knowledge and share their expertise with colleagues around the world.
•IB students actively engage in inquiry and learn to think globally as they develop a sense of international mindedness.

MediaCCenter The Spring Scholastic Book Fair was a success and lots of fun. We were so happy to have Clifford, the big red dog visit Deer Park on family night. A big “Thank You” to the following people: Erica Wade for signing up all those volunteers; Cindy and Hannah Wedding for helping to set up and then pack all those items to return; Ms. Marion Jones for helping to pack all those boxes; and to all the volunteers who came every day to help students select items to purchase. The Deer Park family is “AWESOME”.

SSpanishThe last couple of weeks in Spanish class, we have been working extra hard on remembering to incorporate our Spanish manner words into our grade level specific lessons. I ask that the students use these words in the classroom and at home to increase their fluency of the language as we continue to build on our vocabulary each week.

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go. ― Dr. Seuss, I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!
The following are a few words and phrases that we continue to practice:
por favor – please hola – hello Buenos días – good morning
gracias – thank you adiós – goodbye Buenas tardes – good afternoon
de nada – your welcome hasta luego – see you later Buenas noches – good night

Reading News: Clifford DayDeer Park celebrated Clifford Day on February 15th to honor Norman Bridwell’s 84th birthday. Mr. Bridwell is the author of the Clifford the Big Red Dog books.
Students participated in various Clifford activities leading up to the big day. Primary students had a contest to see who could read the most Clifford books. Intermediate students competed in writing an original Clifford story. All winners received a $5 gift certificate to the school book fair thanks to a generous gift by the Deer Park PTO. Intermediate students also had the winning books sent to Mr. Bridwell.
The day started with students being greeted by Clifford when they stepped off the bus. He then visited with students in the cafeteria during breakfast.
At 8:30 the phone call was placed to Mr. Bridwell. Students sang “Happy Birthday” to him. A representative from each grade level had been selected to ask a question.
We learned lots of things. The next Clifford book is scheduled to be a bedtime story book. Mr. Bridwell intended to call the big red dog character Tiny. His wife suggested Clifford, the name of her childhood imaginary friend. Clifford was red because there was a jar of red paint on Mr. Bridwell’s desk when he was working and he thought a red dog would be different. He made Clifford so big because he remembered learning about dogs in Belgium so big, they were used in the mines. He thought it would be neat to have a dog so big and strong that it could be ridden.
Mr. Bridwell was very kind. When the call was over, all the students sat silent for a moment. One girl said, “Now that was awesome!” It really was a great description of the day.
