Kehilat haKadosh, February, 2012 1

From the editor

Despite the relatively mild weather these past couple of months, we are already half way through winter. We probably won’t stay so lucky though. Chicago winters have a way of taking their toll. So as we move through February things might get a bit more gray and much less sunny.

Luckily for us Jews, this year February begins with Shabbat Shira – the Sabbath of Song. Songs are used throughout the Tanach as a way to sing praise and elevate one’s spirit. So it seems only fitting that we dedicate this month’s Kehilat HaKodesh to that theme – spiritual uplifting.

What can we do to life our spirits, not just during the dark and gray winter months, but throughout the year? Perhaps we can engage more with our community. Or, we can look inward and find something new and rewarding upon which we can focus our attention. Whatever it is, take a lesson from this month’s liturgy and find a way to lift your spirit and that of those around you.

From The Desk Of The Rabbi

A Spiritually Uplifting Moment in Eretz Yisrael

Friday, January 27, 2012

This morning, with a group of Chicago rabbis, traveling together on a mission sponsored by JUF, spent the morning at an absorption center for Ethiopian Jews in a town called Mevasseret Tsion, just outside of Jerusalem. There we visited a kindergarten of Ethiopian Jewish children, recent immigrants to this country. Together we welcomed the Sabbath with song and dance. A miniature Sabbath table is set in the center of a circle complete with white tablecloth, candles, kiddush cup and challah. A six year old boy plays the father, a girl the same age the mother, and two classmates play their children. They bless the wine and the challah, and sing songs with their classmate and teacher to welcome the Sabbath Bride. Jewish children, only a few months removed from the refugee camps of Africa, now celebrating the Sabbath in the Land of Milk and Honey.

Rabbi Rudolph Recommends . . .

Thought this might be a good video for the Newsletter in honor of the

Super Bowl! Would be interesting for the kids, too.

A note from our cantor

Congregation Beth Shalom celebrates 40 years of Jewish life in Naperville with an inspired concert.

Like a concept album, this is a concept concert.

It begins with a visual history of 40 years of congregational life, from home basements in the

Western Suburbs to our sanctuary on Fifth Avenue. These 40 years will come to life, projected in a powerpoint presentation, accompanied by Joanne Sapadin on piano, also a member and gifted musician. This visual history was selected and designed by Ariana and Armand Vigder. Sheli Isenberg was an important contributor and supporter of this great history project. They organized the images of a growing congregation developing before our eyes.

We are a unique congregation filled with talented members. We have composers, lyricists, musicians, humorists, singers, and writers. This is the talent for the CBS 40th Anniversary Concert.

Children who were born in Naperville and left for college have returned as adults to settle here with their growing families. This concert features a third generation of talent. Megan and her cousin Brooke will astound you with their vocal talents. Jeremy Sonkin, son of Gail (and Myron) Sonkin, is Broadway bound, having performed in musical comedy coast to coast. Zack, a high school sophomore, and his elder sister Kim Foster are gifted cellists.

Gail Sonkin is the composer, lyricist, and music director for many original Purim Shpiels performed over a decade at Congregation Beth Shalom. She is composer and leader of the acclaimed jazz quintet, Zazz. Hilary Decent is a humorist and writer who has partnered with Gail for many creative projects. We are so fortunate to have a singing Rabbi. Rabbi Marc Rudolph is a sensitive and talented singer.

Yonah Klem is one of the founders of Congregation Beth Shalom. She chaired the Interiors Committee of our synagogue. The beauty within the walls of our congregation is due in large part to her aesthetic good taste. Her talents extend to her beautiful singing. The Sapadins have been behind so many musical ventures in CBS. Joanne is a gifted pianist with a rare talent for improvisation. She is co-director of the Arkestra of the Covenant, our Simkhat Torah Band. David Sapadin plays most instruments, especially percussion and piano. He has produced and directed many synagogue performances for NCTV, Naperville Community Television. He’ll play percussion and direct the sound with Brian Toby, another gifted member.

Cantor Hasha Musha Perman began her cantorial career at CBS in 1990. She has grown with the congregation. Her band, Hasha Musha & The Kiev Klezmers inspired her to bring many different kinds of music to CBS, including klezmer, classical, folk, and rock, whether for prayer services or for concerts. The CBS Festival Choir is a wonderful volunteer Choir, including devoted singers aged 14 to 80.

The concert is Saturday, February 25, 7:30 p.m, followed by a dessert reception. “Please invite your neighbors to join in this celebration. We are a center for Jewish culture in the western suburbs. Let’s share it! I am so proud of the quality of this exciting entertainment.” Advance tickets for adults are $18, for children $5. At the door, tickets are $36 for adults, $10 for children. Tickets are available in the synagogue office, 630.961.1818.

Growing with the Gan!

It is the mission of the Gan Yeladim Early Learning Center (ELC) to promote high-quality, developmentally appropriate programs for children and their families. Parents, teachers, the synagogue, and the school environment make up the supportive community that surrounds the child. Jewish life, customs, holidays, and values are an integral part of our daily curriculum.

The Early Learning Center program has adopted and follows the guidelines and philosophy of Developmentally Appropriate Practices (DAP) based on knowledge and research about how children develop and learn. Our classes are designed to foster children's growth by meeting the needs of each child and offering a variety of stimulating materials, open-ended activities, and thought provoking projects that promote creative problem solving and encourage children to discover, grow, and learn as they play. ELC programs are licensed by DCFS.

Included in this packet is the information and forms needed for enrollment. When classes are full, applicants will be put on a waiting list and admitted on a space-available basis. Since the state of Illinois requires children to be 5 years old by September 1st to start kindergarten, our enrollment policy follows the same September 1st cut off date.

Please return the program request form, application form, and application fee for each child you are enrolling to , Director. You may mail the forms to Robin Frisch, Congregation Beth Shalom, 772 W. 5th Ave. Naperville, 60563, or put them in Robin Frisch’s mailbox in the CBS office. If you are a returning preschool family, please put your application materials into the ELC folder on the preschool sign in cart.

Feel free to contact Robin Frisch at [email protected] or 630.961.1818 x22 with any questions. Welcome to the Gan Yeladim Early Learning Center!

Honey Bears (2's)

This class serves as an introduction to our preschool program. The curriculum is age appropriate, play-oriented, and is integrated with hands-on learning and Jewish content. The Honey Bears class includes circle time for fun and learning, stories, snack time, music, crafts, free choice time, and outdoor, large motor play. In times of inclement weather, indoor large motor activities are provided.

Alef and Bet Classes (3’s and 4’s)

The Alef (3’s) and Bet (4s) classes are based on the developmentally appropriate philosophy that children’s play is their work. Children choose from many activity areas where they build early literacy, math, problem solving, and social readiness skills. There are individual and group projects, as well as indoor and outdoor discovery and exploration experiences. Daily activities are integrated with Jewish curriculum while providing children with opportunities for social, emotional, physical, and spiritual growth. Snack time is part of our daily routine, and parents have the option of an extended day Lunch Bunch program.

The four year old Bet class is also designed as a pre-k class. In addition to the above activities, the enhanced pre-k curriculum includes early literacy, pre-math, science, and problem-solving skills.

Israeli Dance at CBS

So what does Naperville have in common with Buffalo Grove and

Skokie?

Well, not the same variety of kosher food, but all three places are the

only areas in Chicagoland with weekly Israeli Folk dance sessions.

What is Israeli Folk Dance and why do it? We're glad you asked that

question: It is one of the national past-times of Israel, dancing to

contemporary and some older popular Israeli songs, from anthems to

rock ballads, with a unique repertoire of steps that have been

carefully harvested from many other styles of dance.

Why -- because it is a lot of fun and moving around and getting a bit

of exercise can't hurt. Right?

Starting in February, we will start reteaching all of the beginner

dances that we do, so this is an excellent time to come, if you have

been meaning to see what this is all about.

Mostly we do circle dances, so come even if you can't get your

significant other off the couch.

Teens and families are welcome. Also on 2/13, Jeff Subeck will come

and teach partner dances for a pre-Valentine's Day dance class! We

have not yet taught these dances, so everyone will be learning from

scratch.

No partners necessary: we assign and rotate partners!

Israeli dance meets on Monday nights at CBS in the social hall from

7:00 to 8:30 pm. A donation of $1 is requested but is not required.

From the CBS Archives

By Joni Blackman

I remember my surprise, nearly 20 years ago when we were considering moving here, that Naperville had a synagogue. But at the time, I never stopped to think about how or why there was a Jewish congregation in this largely non-Jewish community. I recently had a chance to talk with and thank some of the people who, in the early 1970s, made that happen.

Fourteen of the people – including the “third Jewish family in Naperville” -- who were instrumental in creating the synagogue we know today as Congregation Beth Shalom gathered in the social hall January 15 to reminisce.

They were invited here by members of the committee gathering the history of our congregation as a sort of starting point to the project we’ve been discussing for the past several months.

In a round-table discussion, we asked a few questions and the group took it from there. Their memories were fascinating to those of us who listened and we look forward to sharing their stories with all of you in the near future.

They told us so many great stories: how they found each other in the community, the first time they all gathered, how they founded a school to educate their children and the many places they used for that endeavor, how they argued about whether they should be a community organization or a congregation, how many of the decisions they made then continue to resonate in the culture of CBS today and what sort of reaction their group received from the Naperville community.

One highlight? The apparently vigorous debate over what to name the new congregation ended with Beth Shalom partly because of its meaning – house of peace – and partly because of the realism of the

group. They figured it was a name their mostly non-Jewish neighbors in the community could pronounce!

We’d like to thank Arthur & Greer Braun, Seymour & Marilyn Bloom, Rich Katz, Selena Rochlis, Gene & Linda Parker, Russ & Yonah Klem, Jay & Eliza Fisher and Raye & Sheli Isenberg for attending.

We look forward to talking with them again, and to future group discussions with leadership from various later generations. We would love to hear from anyone interested in joining one of those groups.

This article was written to increase the awareness of our CBS members about our history in anticipation of our 40th anniversary in May 2012. Sheli Isenberg, Hilary Decent, Joni Hirsch Blackman, David Sapadin, and Brad Kolar are the core of the CBS History Project right now. YOU may have talents we can use so contact us if you want to be involved with the committee. Our goal is to present our common history in film, on our website, and in a book.

We will be contacting founding members and more recent members who have and are contributing to our history for the historical facts and stories that make us who we are as a community. You don’t have to wait to be contacted and can call Sheli Isenberg with your knowledge of how we grew to where we are today. We are also interested in any material you may have boxed away somewhere in your home which might add to our historical knowledge. We want to build the archives of CBS. Contact Sheli at 630-355-9571 or [email protected] to contribute material, stories or your talents.

Darshei Shalom (formerly DSP) Greeter Program Needs Volunteers

The title DSP has been recently changed to reflect the warm and welcoming way we greet arrivals at CBS, an approach which also helps keep our building and the people within it as safe and secure as possible. Darshei Shalom translates as Greeters or Communicators, and more literally Seekers of Peace and Wholeness. Each participating individual is a Darshan (as versus the previous DSP designation). Since CBS is the House of Shalom, Darshei Shalom has a very specific tie to our congregation.

Serving as a Darshan means you represent CBS as our greeter...our communicator...and our preacher of peace and wholeness. What a mitzvah, how great an honor! Preparation involves viewing a twelve minute video at your convenience. Please consider volunteering to be a Darshan when you get the call!

Sound reinforcement training for teens and adults

Have you ever wanted to learn how set up microphones for a performance or how to run an audio mixer? Did you know that CBS has a mixer, snake and lots of other fancy electronic doodads?

Here is your chance to look impressive by running the mixer for a future CBS event! Learn how to run sound for CBS events such as the High Holiday services as well as concerts and special events such as our recent Rock Shabbat service.

To have more trained volunteers who know how to help set up and run sound equipment in our community, CBS members David Sapadin and Brian Toby, both amateurs with some experience in the sound reinforcement trade, would like to share what they know.

We will meet about one Sunday each month to discuss topics ranging from how to coil microphone cables to what impedance matching is

all about; from what all those different knobs and levers on the mixer do -- to where to point the microphone.

We will meet starting at 1:00 pm for 60-90 minutes on the following dates: Feb 5, March 11, April 22, May 13. We will meet in the lobby and then move to another spot where we can talk.

Teens (7th grade+) as well as adults are invited to join us.

Bring your questions and we will add them to our discussion topics. Our next sound gig will be the CBS Anniversary Concert on Feb 25, so be prepared to get some hands-on experience soon. Please send an e-mail to David Sapadin <[email protected]> and Brian Toby <[email protected]> if interested.

Free Adult Education Course : “Jewish Customs: Frequently-Asked Questions & Answers”

Why sit around at Beth Shalom on Sunday mornings waiting to drive your child or grandchild home after their Religious School classes when you could be learning more about Jewish customs and basic Judaism by taking this free course?

Would you like to win a prize for the most correct answers about Judaism during class?

Would you like to be able to answer questions that your child or grandchild might ask you about what they are learning about Judaism in Religious School?

This course is for parents or grandparents as well as for all interested adults. It will be presented by Joseph R. Davis, M.D., Ph.D. in Congregation Beth Shalom’s Library from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM on each Religious School Sunday morning.

Each session will be taught for 60 minutes with approximately 20 questions and answers on Jewish customs for the first 35 minutes, followed by the meaning and use in an English sentence of three Yiddish words for 5 minutes, followed by the accomplishments of two famous American Jews 10 minutes, and finally followed by an important event in modern Jewish history for the last 10 minutes of the class.

The course will include both the presentation of traditional answers to each question by the teacher as well as the opportunity for you to interact as to what each Jewish custom, Yiddish word, famous American Jew, or important event in modern Jewish history may mean to you in your life today.

You will receive a worksheet at each session which you can complete during the class and which will serve not only to stimulate class

interaction, but also to serve as a set of class notes that you can always refer back for yourself, or use the completed class notes to answer any questions about Judaism that your children or grandchildren might ask of you at home.

You don’t have to attend every session. Feel free to come to any session that you can. Walk-ins are always welcome at any time.

As long as you are already here on Sunday mornings during the time you bring and pick up your child from Congregation Beth Shalom’s Religious School, why not take advantage of this free, exciting and enjoyable opportunity to learn more about Jewish customs and basic Judaism.

It is also never too late for you to get more knowledge about Judaism, even if you don’t currently have a child or grandchild in the Religious School on Sundays.

This course will be held from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM on each of the Sundays that the Religious School meets during the academic year of 2011-2012.

Adult Ed Committee: New Name- Fresh Ideas

The Adult Ed Committee has been re-energized as the Jewish Life Enrichment Committee!

The JLE will be dedicated to enhancing Jewish life through adult education and providing learning opportunities of Jewish interest to all adult members of CBS.

In addition to supporting the on-going classes such as Torah study , Israeli dance, conversational Hebrew, Jewish Customs, Israel discussion, etc. we welcome new ideas, new teachers and new committee members.

We’d love to hear your ideas of a class you like to see or a class you’d like to lead. We welcome educational and experiential ideas for enhancing Jewish life - cooking, studying, creating, reading.

We also welcome new committee members. We want to provide learning opportunities for all our adult members so we’d like the Committee to represent as broad a range of our congregation as we can. We are currently under-represented by parents of school-age (and younger) children.

Our website tab is under construction but in the meantime, please contact Jill Lexier at [email protected].

Tu Bishvat Seder

On Shabbat, February 11, a Tu Bishvat Seder will follow our Contemplative Shabbat service at 11:15 am in the social hall. All are welcome. We will be using a Tu Bishvat Hagaddah written by Cantor Hasha Musha Perman. We will eat different kinds of fruits, drink grape juice representing the changing seasons, and sing holiday songs. Hope to see you all there!

In the Wink of an Eye

February is a miserable month in Naperville. We’ve already had enough snow, enough shoveling and enough cold but we know it won’t be over until at least April. Along with our New Year’s resolutions we feel like failures.

What is there to look forward to in February? Well Hallmark can look forward to Valentine’s Day I guess. But what about those of us who never receive a card, don’t get a sniff of a bouquet or a nibble at a box of chocolates? There’s nothing less romantic than thinking everyone around you is being pampered and nurtured while you’re alone with only Pat Sajak and Vanna White for company.

As if February were not bad enough, this year we have an extra day of it! We could be celeb rating the first of March, one day closer to spring, but no, we’re still in gloomy February!

There’s nothing much to do in the shortest month of the year. It’s too cold to attend Friday night services so we sit in watching re runs of Hawaii Five-0 which only serve to remind us how long the dark evenings are. Yes, we all hate February.

If the aim of this month’s newsletter is to lift and awaken your spirits, I guess I’ve failed, but I’m sure many of you agree with these sentiments. Fortunately they are not actually ones I adhere to.

I love February. In fact it’s the most special month of the year. February sees our son’s birthday, my birthday and for the past 31 years, our wedding anniversary. We always take a special trip and I really do believe it’s a magical time. Whether it really is is debatable but what I find is that when you really believe in magic you have the power to make your dreams come true.

So my challenge to you this cold, snowy February is this. Wake up each morning with hope in your heart and a belief this will turn out to be a most special month for you too. And if you try hard enough, I promise it will.

Library news

CBS LIBRARY ELEVATES SPIRITS

By Carol Medor for the CBS Library Committee

The Congregation Beth Shalom Library has some great ways to uplift one’s spirit and brighten winter days and nights. Why not pick up a CD and be entertained and enlightened by one of the various forms of Jewish music. Among the CDs available are It’s All Good by Sababa, Mish Mosh by Mickey Katz, and Authentic Israeli Folk Songs and Dances.

If one is more uplifted by playing music, rather than just listening, the CBS Library has music books, located on the tall bookcase between the windows.

Included there, one will find Great Songs of the Yiddish Theater, selected by Norman H. Warembud, Music of a People, compiled by Velvel Pasternak, and The Shlomo Carlebach Anthology, also compiled and edited by Velvel Pasternak.

One could also select a DVD to watch. The Library recently received a donation of approximately two dozen movies, which are available to members for home use. Some of these are Broken Wings, I Love You Rosa, and Time of Favor.

Perhaps, one’s spirit would be elevated by delving into Jewish humor and comedy. Among other titles, the Library has Without Feather by Woody Allen, Jewish Humor by Rabbi Joseph Telushkin, and How to Raise a Jewish Dog, as told to Ellis Weiner and Barbara Davilman.

One could find a spiritual lift in works of Jewish literature. The Congregation Beth Shalom Library offers works, such as Collected Stories of Sholom Aleichem-The Old Country, The New Israeli Writers, edited by Dalia Rabikovitz, and Great Jewish Short Stories, edited by Saul Bellow, as well as novels, such as God’s Ear, by Rhoda Lerman,

Chains Around the Grass, by Naomi Ragen, Black Box, by Amos Oz, and My Name Is Asher Lev, by Chaim Potok.

Regardless of the source of one’s spiritual uplifting, CBS members will find that resource available to them in the Library. Whether it is listening or playing music, watching a video, reading Jewish humor or novels, or, of course, exploring a new topic of Jewish history, culture, practice, or belief, the CBS Library has what is wanted. Come in; browse; sit with a book; check something out; elevate the spirit.

CBS Artspace: Meet the Artists, Friday, February 10th

CBS ArtSpace welcomes artists Cheryl Quick and Angela McElwain at the Oneg on Friday, February 10th.

Cheryl is returning to us with an exhibit of her latest work, a series of interesting and beautiful collages. She would like to thank Congregation Beth Shalom for giving her the opportunity to exhibit her work.

Angela is exhibiting the work she calls Assemblages. She uses various materials to create intriguing works of art. She says “My work evokes mysticism, anima, irony, persona and dreams, testing the thin line between what we know and what we imagine.”

The show will run through April 1st.

Works are for sale, and proceeds benefit the Congregation.

Renwal of Spirit By Yonah Klem

Happiness is the new hot topic. Tal ben-Shahar’s book, Happier, hit the New York Times bestseller list and stayed there for a while; nor was he alone on the subject. There is talk of a “new science of happiness,” and

scholars are busy doing the research.

Happiness turns out to be largely an attitude, one that can be cultivated and increased. Each of us has a choice whether to see the glass as half empty or half full, to choose gratitude or grouchiness.

On the surface, Torah is not a happiness how-to book, but dig a little deeper and it is. Often the “how-to: is disguised in “how-not-to,” or left for the reader to imply from the circumstance.

For instance, in the wonderful, joyful words of the Song of the Sea, we learn that happiness can be had with the attainment of a wonderful goal: the Israelites made it to the other side of the Sea of Reeds unharmed, and their mortal enemies were vanquished. But, in very short order, the excitement died down and the were heard to grumble that they would have preferred to die as slaves, with a slave’s easy access to food, shelter and predictability, than suffer the strangeness and uncertainty of the wilderness.

The Israelites complain about lack of water, and water appears – but where is the gratitude? They fret about hunger, and manna appears. No body goes hungry, but where is the gratitude that no one is starving?

According to the story, God was looking for gratitude, especially in the form of the Israelites acknowledging that they were being well taken care of by a power much greater than themselves.

Alas, the Israelites were about 3000 years too early for the insights of authors like ben-Shakar.

Our Jewish tradition has given us the tools to increase happiness in our prayer structure and in the mitzvot. The heart of any service is what we call “blessings,” which are brief statements of gratitude. If the language of a blessing doesn’t move you, try changing it to modern English. The mitzvot teach that a disciplined life is also a source of happiness. Check out the words of Biblical selection 1 or 2 after the Sh’ma: if you follow My program of discipline, good things will happen (and you will be happy).

This is not difficult. A simple practice is to find a few things to be grateful for each and every day. The object of your gratitude can be tiny or tremendous; the important thing is to express your gratitude. Writing it down is especially effective.

A simple discipline is to bless your bread before eating it. It takes about 4 seconds to recite the motzi in Hebrew. There is a whole set of prayers to be said after meals; but if that seems like too much, start small: “I am grateful for the nourishing food I ate,” or, “Thank You for the food I ate.”

Once the habit of gratitude and discipline are established it is easy to build on them, or not. A small practice is a valuable practice. It is the practice itself that opens us up to the happiness potential embedded in each moment.

A word about the bad, sad stuff in our lives. These gratitude practices are not a panacea for all of the dark emotions, from disappointment to grief. They are, I believe, a bulwark against despair and hopelessness, which can suck the very life out of us. That alone is worthy of our gratitude.

I am grateful to have learned the truth of what I have written. I am grateful to have the opportunity, the skill, the time and the presence of mind to share these thoughts with you. I am grateful you have read them, and hope you find my comments useful.

Odyssey Hospice is seeking volunteers

Dear Members of Congregation Beth Shalom:

Odyssey Hospice is seeking volunteers to provide companionship and support to a significant number of patients with life-limiting illnesses and their families in your Naperville/Glen Ellyn/Lisle/Warrenville community. Patient Care Volunteers provide conversation, leisure activities or a quiet, caring presence.

You may also use your education and/or area of expertise to aide our patients and program. Your additional talents might include art; horticultural therapy; gardening; massage therapy; music therapy; pet therapy; life review and reminiscence such as recording oral histories, scrapbooking, photography, and more.

Patient Visit Volunteers may occasionally provide the opportunity for respite to caregivers if a patient resides at home, allowing a caregiver to take time for him/herself.

Volunteers with Odyssey Hospice are an important part of a larger team who recognize that psychological, spiritual, and social services, as well as medical/clinical care, can contribute to an improved life quality for patients in the last stages of life. We offer an extensive orientation as well as ongoing volunteer support.

I would be happy to offer an informational presentation at your convenience, as well as local site orientation. Please contact me at [email protected], or 847-439-0348.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

Judy Guggenheim

ParnossahWorksChicago: A New Employment Website for Personalized Job Assistance

Jewish Vocational Service (JVS) announces the launch of ParnossahWorksChicago.org, a new free job search website accessible by Chicago area job seekers and employers. A unique job posting board, ParnossahWorksChicago.org caters to local jobs at all professional levels, offering a wide range of resumes and open positions to ensure a productive and mutually beneficial search. Unlike any other job posting website, qualified candidates are screened by an experienced, highly trained JVS career counselor.

The website offers an alternative to large, overwhelming job boards, with JVS staff providing confidential services to both candidates and employers to attain a strong match. The job posting board gives individuals access to job opportunities and employment assistance, while offering a venue for employers to find pre-screened candidates to fill their open positions. The site, free to both employees and employers, is made possible by a grant from the Jewish Federation’s J-HELP Initiative. Additional features include: job search tools and strategies, relevant resources, a calendar listing topical workshops and special events and opportunities to sign up for job campaign services.

Originally developed by F E G S Health and Human Services System in New York to serve unemployed and underemployed Jews in their area, ParnossahWorks is operating successfully in Detroit, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Toronto, Minneapolis and Atlanta. “With everyone from senior executives, middle managers, to young professionals and recent college graduates being affected by the

current economic turmoil, this is an opportunity for members of the Jewish community to connect and help one another,” said Rose Dessau, Supervisor, JVS Employment Services.

In addition to ParnossahWorks, JVS provides job campaign assistance through the Jewish Employment Network (JEN) offering networking opportunities, career counseling and cutting-edge job search

strategies for people looking to be competitive in a tough market. JVS career counselors provide support and help keep clients motivated and on track throughout the job search process. Evening roundtables, ongoing groups and targeted workshops along with a client list-serve complement individual sessions with a counselor. The Jewish Employment Network is a partnership of Jewish Vocational Service, the Chicago Board of Rabbis, the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago and affiliated congregations.

For more information on ParnossahWorksChicago.org call 312-673-3437 or e-mail [email protected].

This student- led service (with adult supervision) allows children the opportunity to be the gabbi, lead prayers in English or Hebrew, and take a part in “Sedra Scenes” performances - great practice in public speaking and preparation for Bnei Mitzvot. This service is targeted for children who can read English and are beginning to learn Hebrew. CBS Communication Guidelines and Deadlines

Communication is a funny thing. Some people tell us they get too much, while others tell us they don’t get enough. Some people say they “tune out” because the same information is repeated everywhere while others say that they waste their time searching for what they need. To improve our effectiveness, we are focusing each major form of communication from CBS. However, we need your help. It is important that you at least skim the various communications from CBS. That will ensure that you are kept up-to-date on what is happening in and around our community. For your reference, we have included a table summarizing our communication tools and submission deadlines.
