absolutely!A W I N N E R

I hope you remembered that this month is the month of love! Yes, this time of year we celebrate our loved ones with gifts, chocolate, flowers and sweet nothings! The majority of my friends think this is a silly holiday created by card companies and fueled by the mainstream to increase sales in a variety of “lovey” type fields. I say, “Who cares?” One of my favorite memories as a child is making a pretty Valentine’s box out of all of my favorite art supplies like doilies, glue, a shoe box and pink construction paper, and one of my favorite adult memo-ries is doing the same with my children.

I love our cover story this month of love, where we meet John and Tammy Odette who are celebrating their 30th anniversary this year. You’ll read about what makes them so special. We are also applauding all of the long-term marriages out there, because we know it takes a lot to go the mile.

Also in this Valentine’s issue, our Vine Sleuth will share some fun wine and chocolate pairings to try this Valentine’s Day, and we also have some gift ideas for the that special someone.

In closing, I’d like to wish my husband, Brent Milam, of 11 years, a Hap-py Valentine’s Day, and if you are wondering what I’d like for Valentine’s Day this year, here is a hint: Check out page 31. I’d love the hot new ride from Texas Direct Auto!

J“I thought he was so cute,” Tammy

said with a laugh. “After that, he started letting me sit in his truck when I had an off period. He would write me notes, and I would write notes back to him.

Their first date was in the month of love: February 25, 1984. They went to a movie, The Man Who Loved Women starring Burt Reynolds, and afterward drove out to a lake where they talked. They were married that same year on

October 20, 1984. “Everybody told us it wouldn’t last.”

This year, they’ll celebrate their wedding 30th anniversary. “John and I both came from abusive families so we said, when we get together and have a family, ours wasn’t going to be full of turmoil. Honestly, I think when we met, we didn’t know what love was. After we got married and moved in to-gether, then we fell in love. We were young, just little kids.”

ohn and Tammy Odette met at age 17 as seniors in high

school in Michigan. Tammy recalls a pizza place across

the school where kids hung out. John was standing outside,

and when he saw her, he did a silly dance.

John and Tammy Odette married at John's parent's home in October 20, 1984, and he paid for the entire wedding at a whopping $3,000!

They talk about everything and have often said to each other, “I don’t know what I’d do without you, God for-bid, if something ever happened to you, there would never be anyone else. It’s always been him and I. We matured to-gether,” said Tammy.

The couple has a son and two daugh-ters. “I feel very lucky to have John. He’s not only my husband, he’s not only a father, he’s just everything to us. He and I still hold some of those old-time values. For example, kids respect your elders. This is the way things are. Our kids are so well-grounded. I don’t know if that comes from us or not,” she said with a laugh.

The Odette’s philosophy on mar-riage is straightforward: “When you have an argument with someone that day, don’t take things too much to heart. Just get on with your life. You realize you want to spend quality time with them – not fighting all the time. If you want to do that, why be togeth-er? We’ve never had that. I think it’s because we got so close because all we had was each other. We didn’t really have our parents.”

Overcoming Trials andChallenges Together

Because John works in the oil indus-try, the Odette’s lived in several cities before coming to Houston in 2001 and have lived in Katy nine years. Tammy worked outside the home for many years, but since moving to Houston, she’s been a stay-at-home mom.

“When we moved away from home, we had to depend on ourselves. We didn’t have anyone else. I think that made an even stronger bond for us. Now the only family we have is John’s mom in Conroe and his sister in Aus-tin. We’ve had to lean on each other all this time. We’ve had to figure out how to make things work. I couldn’t just run to my mom when there was a problem,” she said.

One challenge the couple faced was John helping Tammy with her rela-tionship with her mother. Also, John leaned on Tammy because he didn’t have a relationship with his dad.

“We’ve been living for our kids –

making sure they tried sports and oth-er activities. John and I didn’t get to do any of that. We knew we weren’t going to college. But John and I knew what we wanted out of life.”

John started out at the bottom of an oilfield company cutting brush; now he’s the president of drilling op-erations. “He did that through hard work. We were married for three years and found out we were finally going to have a baby. At that time, John was a breakfast cook. He quit that job, went into the oil business, and never looked back.”

Their biggest trial was that John would be gone for three months at a time. Tammy was working a full-time job and taking care of three small child-ren. He would be home for two weeks and have to leave again for three months. “If I had a problem with the kids or something else, I would call him. He hated being far away from the family at those times.”

Family Fun

Now John’s job enables him to work from the office or from home. He’s around all the time, and he and the kids do a lot together. “The kids are easily adaptable,” said Tammy. “I think it’s because we moved around so much.”

At the age of 46 and soon-to-be emp-ty nesters, John and Tammy feel very happy to be able to start enjoying each other in a new phase of life. They have a two-year-old grandson who’s the ap-ple of their eye.

The Odette’s are big drag racing fans. Every year, they go to the O’Reilly track in Baytown with a group of friends. They also enjoy fishing and camping. “We’re talking about finding new things to do because our kids are grown. We have to figure out what we like.”

For Valentine’s Day, John usu-ally sends Tammy flowers, and she tries to send him a cookie bouquet at work. “We’re more about celebrating with the kids than by ourselves, even our anniversaries. Kids and grandkids can come over any time. We want the family around. Our children are proud of our marriage. I feel very blessed to have everything we have.”

When asked about their advice for a happy marriage, Tammy said, “Don’t be afraid to talk things out even if you’re just a little upset, because if you wait and let it boil, then you say hurtful things that can’t be taken back. Take a little bit of time to gather your thoughts of what you’re mad about or what you want to discuss.” John added, "It comes down to three things – mu-tual respect, mutual trust and mutual goals."

You may know me as a Katy mom of three amazing boys and wife to Daryn, but what

you may not know is that I love finding cool and unique products because, let’s face it, in a house full of boys, a girl needs her girl stuff! So, here are some things I absolutely love... and hope you will, too!

FabulousFinds

Hotel ZaZa

The perfect location for a girl's night out and a day at the spa. This was my gift to my sons' girlfriends. We stayed the night, went shopping at the Galleria and then had massages at the hotel spa. It was fabulous! Such a great location for a fun night, weekend with girlfriends or for a romantic Valentine getaway for couples! www.hotelzaza.com

Shabby Chic Cozy Blanket

When I say this is the best blanket ever, I’m not kidding! Everyone in my house has their own, and they are fabulous. All three of my boys love this blanket and every one of their friends do, too! To quote one of the guys, “It’s magical!” I love it. www.target.com

Heart Edition Watch by Swarovski

This romantic design makes a perfect Valentine’s gift! It features an elegant heart motif, which can be removed and worn as a pendant by attaching the silk cord delivered with the watch. The watch also comes with an extra bezel in clear crystal pavé for a subtler look. It is really beautiful!www.swarovski.com

Gourmet Chocolate

My husband bought me a beautiful red box of these gourmet chocolates last year, and they were not only beautiful, but they were delicious! Every piece was so different and had its own unique blend of chocolate, liquors, nuts, coffee and many other flavors. My mom and I had so much fun tasting and reading about each one. Everything is made from scratch at the Katy location. During a visit there, you will get to see how the chocolate is made, and enjoy a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. Sounds yummy! www.arayachocolate.com

Champagne Diamond Earrings

I stopped in Amber’s Designs to look around, and these earrings caught my eye. They are the most beautiful, champagne-colored diamond stud earrings! They are pricey, but if you are looking for something really special for that sweetheart, and the sky is the limit for price, then these earrings are just the right gift. Managementvs. OversightThe Role of theBoard of Trustees

The Katy ISD Board of Trustees: Bill Proctor, Bryan Mchalsky, Terry

Huckabee, Charles Griffin, Joe Adams, Rebbeca Fox and Henry Dibrell.

J anuary is School Board Appreciation Month across the state of Texas. Teachers around the district have children prepare cards expressing their thanks for our

work. Sometimes our email takes a break from “complaints,” and we get a much-appreciated note like this one from the community:

The Texas Education Code defines our job. A short excerpt of the code offers a glimpse into our role:

Sec. 11.051. GOVERNANCE OF INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT; NUMBER OF TRUSTEES.(a) An independent school district is governed by a board of trustees who, as a body corporate, shall:

(1) Oversee the management of the district; and(2) Ensure that the superintendent implements and monitors plans, procedures, programs, and systems to achieve appropriate, clearly defined, and desired results in the major areas of district operations.

(a-1) Unless authorized by the board, a member of the board may not, individually, act on behalf of the board. The board of trustees may act only by majority vote of the mem-bers present at a meeting held in compliance with Chapter 551, Government Code, at which a quorum of the board is present and voting. The board shall provide the superinten-dent an opportunity to present at a meeting an oral or written recommendation to the board on any item that is voted on by the board at the meeting.

Kind words like these mean so much to us, and in many ways, they are our compensation. As many of you know, a school board position is elected, but it is not a paid position. We run for office and get elected to a position that has no financial compensation. We are volunteers. We do this work because of love for our community, schools, district and most of all, young people. But what is it that we do? What is our role?

What does all that and the many more pages that follow mean? Simply, it means oversight not management, policy making not operations, vision not implementation. We gov-ern, not manage. We provide vision to the district and admin-istration.

The Board of Trustees is entrusted to be the policy mak-ing body for the entire district. The Board sets goals for the district and oversees the Superintendent’s implementation of those goals. The Board of Trustees as a “Body Corporate” acts to insure that both the quality of education is maintained, and the public funds are utilized in accordance with the law, in line with community values and in the best interest of our children. We are always looking forward, asking ourselves, “What do we want our community, our schools, our students to look like in the future?”

Why is this relevant to you? The School Board impacts your life from the day you move into Katy ISD until the day you leave. We set the tax rate on your home, we educate your children, we deter-mine where your children will attend school. We shape our community by the actives we support, the facilities we build and the leadership we provide. Katy is a top destina-tion district for the great state of Texas. The School Board works diligently to keep it that way and build a stronger, more excellent Katy ISD!

By Henry Dibrell

I'd like to thank Katy ISD, the KISD Superin-tendent and its Board of Trustees for taking the ini-tiative and spending the resources to create a com-petitive curriculum for our children. I have family and friends in Decatur, Texas where they recently adopted the CSCOPE program, and both the teach-ers and students are suffering greatly because of it. It's creating a lack of trust in the parents and put-ting teachers under duress. Meanwhile, students are not learning the skills necessary to succeed in school or to pass the state tests. When we chose to move to Katy a year ago, I had heard that the schools here were very good. But now, I can person-ally attest that they are indeed excellent. Watching my friends and family suffer under CSCOPE has made me very, very thankful that KISD makes the effort to create and implement its own curriculum.

Sincerely, Kimberly

Love and Marriage . . . and Love During Divorce?By Nancy L. Rommelmann PLLCFamily Law Attorney

Y ou’ve heard the phrase, “Love and marriage go together like a horse and carriage,” but can

love be shown during a divorce?

Consider the following ways to love while going through a divorce:

1. Love yourself: Take care of yourself. Do healthy activities that make you feel good about yourself (exercise, get involved with your church or spend time with good friends). Don’t beat yourself up. Don’t indulge in addictive behavior. Spend your energy on positive pursuits that allow and promote personal growth. Daily evaluate your motives and actions and hold yourself accountable to honorable behavior, which actually results in you gaining power with your soon-to-be ex-spouse.

2. Love your children: Children don’t want to be in the middle of a divorce. Be sensitive to your children, their needs and what they are going through. Give them the gift of your time and undivided attention during this difficult time. Show the other parent respect while in the presence of the children.

3. Love your soon-to-be ex-spouse: Okay, maybe it’s difficult to show love to your soon-to-be ex-spouse, but you can show respect, and be nice. Take the high road. Don’t be petty. Do the right thing for the right reasons, particularly as it relates to your children who are subject to the divorce. Your children deserve to see this behavior from both of their parents. This is hard work at a personal level, due in part to the mix of emotionally charged issues that come up throughout a divorce, but do the “work.” You won’t regret it.

“There needn’t be ‘broken’ families, defined by divorce decrees and the like. Families can be defined and bound by love and other matters of the heart.”

He formed Campbell Wellness to help anyone seeking to improve and create balance in their lives and to bring together the vital pieces of the wellness “puzzle.” Campbell Wellness Center en-capsulates a fitness center, yoga studio, a one-of-a kind home-style kitchen, and a spa that includes both massage therapy and cosmetic rejuvenation. A packed winter social calendar, endless temptations for fattening comfort foods and mounting holiday expens-es may make one want to hide under the covers until

spring. These feelings could be signs of the winter blues, said Catherine Powers-James, Ph.D., clinical psychologist in in-tegrative medicine at MD Anderson.

"During winter months, some people experience feelings similar to depression," Powers-James said. And, the shorter days and darker nights of winter can amplify this sluggish mood. Daylight lets the body know when it should be awake and asleep. So, more sunlight makes people more alert and less sunlight makes people groggier. As a result, people crave comfort foods, lack interest in their usual hobbies and have less energy to exercise during winter.

Winter Blues?Six Ways to Improve Mood and Energy

"But giving in to unhealthy habits can not only negatively affect your health, but also cause extra stress," said Lorenzo Cohen, Ph.D., professor and director of integrative medicine at MD Anderson.

Cohen and Powers-James offer these strategies to help avoid or overcome a winter slump:

1. Eat a healthy diet. Feeling blue can make it easy to desire foods high in fat, carbohydrates and sugar, but try to resist temptation. "A carbohydrate- and sugar-rich diet will spike your blood sugar, and then, it will drop," Cohen said. “So, one may feel more energized initially. But in the long run, feelings of tiredness and moodiness can intensify.” Instead, eat more plant proteins, like vegetables, nuts and beans, fruits and whole grains. They provide vitamins, min-erals and protein, which restore energy levels. Plus, it will also help maintain a healthy weight and lower cancer risks.

2. Get regular exercise. Exercise might be the first thing to go when the cold weather won’t let up. Don't let it. "The feel-good chemicals released during exercise can help ease anxiety and im-prove your mental health," Powers-James said. And, exercise strength-ens the immune system, helps people maintain a healthy weight and re-duces risks for colon, breast and en-dometrial cancers. Aim for at least two and a half hours of moderate physi-cal activity or an hour and 15 minutes of more vigorous physical activity each week.

3. Try sun therapy. Winter typically means less light and more darkness, making people want to hibernate inside. Instead, get outside when the sun is shining, but be sure to wear sunscreen. "Being exposed to sunlight wakes up your body and allows it to adjust back to its normal sleep-wake cycle," Powers-James said. “A midday walk outside can do the trick.”

4. Increase social interactions. Being around family and friends can boost mood and help motivate people to do the things they enjoy. Ask a friend to go to the movies or grab a cup of green tea with a co-worker.

5. Get enough sleep. Aim for seven to eight hours of sleep each night. That amount helps people wake up feeling refreshed. "Sleep is restorative. It's a time for the body and mind to heal," Cohen said. "Getting too little or too much can cause moodiness, memory troubles and problems with think-ing and focusing."

6. Practice relaxation techniques. Anxiety and stress often accompany a winter slump, and both are dam-aging to one’s health, Cohen said. To boost energy and mood, try to relax.

If anxiety symptoms are severe or persist into the spring and summer, talk to a mental healthcare professional. They may offer more effective therapies or medications. The best bet to prevent the blues? "Engage in a healthy lifestyle year round," Powers-James said. "You'll feel better and lower your cancer risks."

Q: WHAT DOES A PEDIATRIC RADIOLOGIST DO?

A pediatric radiologist is a medical subspecialist who focuses on the diag-nosis of illnesses and injuries of children of all ages using a variety of imaging techniques and equipment. The pedia-tric radiology team at Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus provides timely, comprehensive imaging procedures for pediatric patients. Computed tomogra-phy (CT), radiography (X-Ray) and fluoros-copy, interventional radiology, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasound capabilities are all available at Texas Chil-dren’s Hospital West Campus.

Q: WHAT ARE SAFE RADIATION LEVELS FOR CHILDREN?

It’s important to limit radiation expo-sure for everyone. However, while all

abso

Q A&Radiology

From MRIs and X-rays to CT Scans, pediatric radiolo-gists have a number of tools to aid them in quickly and accurately diagnosing and assessing a child’s

illness or injury. While many families may be familiar with an X-ray exam, some may not know about more advanced technologies like CT scans or MRIs. Also, with the recent national media spotlight on radiation exposure, many par-ents may be concerned about what levels of exposure are appropriate for children.

Below, Dr. J. Herman Kan, a pediatric radiologist at Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus, answers some of the most common pediatric radiology questions.

Located at I-10 and Barker Cypress, Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus houses the only 24/7 pediatric emergency room in the Greater West Houston area, four surgical suites and a minor procedure room, inpatient services and advanced imaging services including ultrasound, MRI and CT scans. Visit www.westcampus.texaschildrens.org.

types of radiation carry risks, low-levels of exposure are safe. What many may not realize is that we are all exposed to radiation on a daily basis by simply walk-ing around. The amount of radiation ex-posure a child receives from diagnostic tests, including CT scans or X-rays, is relatively small.

If your doctor refers your child to Tex-as Children’s Hospital West Campus for a CT scan, rest assured that your child will receive a very low amount of radia-tion because our studies are tailored for children. On average, our radiation doses for individual CT studies are 40 percent lower.

Q: HOW CAN RADIATION LEVELS IN CHILDREN BE MINIMIZED?

It’s important to have your child’s imaging performed at a child-friendly

facility. While many clinics and hospitals offer diagnostic radiology, many are not set up for children. Having your child’s testing done at a pediatric facility is vital as it ensures the machines and levels of radiation that are administered are ap-propriate to the size of your child. Also, having your child’s testing conducted at a pediatric facility with highly trained experts, like at Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus, ensures that your child’s tests are done accurately the first time and the results are interpreted by expert pediatric radiologists. This will minimize the need for repeat testing and more ra-diation exposure.

Q: WHAT EXACTLYIS A CT SCAN?

Computed Tomography, more com-monly know as a CT scan, is an imagining technique where a computer uses X-rays to make a series of detailed pictures of the inside of the body. The CT machine is big and looks like a large doughnut.

Your child will lie on a table, secured by soft safety straps. The table will move slowly through the middle of the machine while the pictures are made. At Texas Children’s, you can stay in the room with your child to offer reassurance.

each other to see how well they can perform their work. It was this internal desire to compete that helped create to-day’s Ranch Rodeo.

For more than 31 years, cowboys have competed in regional and national Ranch Rodeos to earn “bragging rights.” Each event is filled with excitement and a sampling of how real cowboys work. Although the American cowboy is part of our national heritage, many people are not aware that they are the back-bone of our economy and the dedicated stewards of our land and livestock.

With an increasing demand for ranch rodeos in the U.S. and Canada, the sport has seen significant growth and success over the last few years. The presence of these rodeos in the Gulf Coast region of Texas had been limited until the Hous-ton Livestock Show and Rodeo™ took on the charge in early 2007. With a num-ber of historic Texas ranches and quali-fied teams from counties surrounding Harris county, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo will open the chutes for the eighth year on March 7th and 8th in Reliant Arena with two action-packed days of Ranch Rodeo excitement. Chair-man and long-time Katy resident Dud-ley Ray thinks this is one of the best values of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. “Once people come witness this event , they are amazed at how fast-paced and how close they are to the ac-tion. Our crowd has grown every year.”

With support from Texas’ most his-toric stock shows, the Ranch Rodeo Committee is excited to again host the Champion Challenge in 2014. This ex-citing event features the top three ranch teams from the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo as they showcase their tal-ents. The events they will participate in are Mugging, Bronc Riding, Calf Brand-ing, Wild Cow Milking, Team Sorting, Pasture Doctoring and Trailer Loading.

Join the fun at Reliant Arena on March 7th and 8th for some inexpen-sive, exciting family fun. The action starts at 7 pm each night, and there is a county event on Saturday morning at 11 am. Once you get inside the gates of Re-liant Park, there is no charge to watch the rodeo.

Chest pain or discomfort anywhere along the front of your body, between your neck and upper abdomen, is not something to ignore. There are many possible causes; some can be serious and even life-threatening. If you have unexplained chest pain that lasts longer than three days, the only way to confirm its cause is to have a doctor evaluate you.

Houston Methodist West Hospital’s emergency department stresses to call 911 if you suspect a heart attack or ex-perience any of these symptoms:

• Sudden crushing, squeezing, tight-ening or pressure in your chest.

• Pain that spreads to your jaw, left arm or between your shoulder blades.

• Nausea, dizziness, sweating, a rac-ing heart or shortness of breath.

• You know you have angina and your chest discomfort is suddenly more in-tense while at rest, brought on by lighter activity, or lasts longer than usual.

If your chest pain is from a heart at-tack, time is of the essence. The pain is caused by lack of blood flow to the heart muscle. Each moment that passes with-

out treatment results in muscle damage that affects the heart’s ability to pump effectively. Patients with chest pain at Houston Methodist West are immediate-ly evaluated by a team of specialists and their highly skilled doctors and staff can provide state-of-the art treatment dur-ing the critical early stages of a cardiac event.

To learn more about chest pain and heart services available at Houston Methodist West, or to register for our heart screening and chest pain seminar on February 20th, call 832-522-5522.

Although some might disagree with me, I absolutely love wine and chocolate together. I just

love playing with all of the combina-tions to see what flavors work the best for me. Sure, sometimes I find a few that definitely do not work, but then I come across those pairings that sing and all is well again. And, who can complain when you just “have to” open a few different bottles of wine and gather a few different types of choco-late together for science? Or artistry? Or whatever?

Now, I do realize that not everyone has the patience that I do to keep try-ing different combinations of wines and chocolates. Sometimes you just want to go with what you know will be good, es-pecially when you are trying to impress someone on a Valentine’s Day date, even if that someone you want to im-press is already your spouse. You gotta keep the sparks going, right?

So, for those of you who want a bet-ter chance of success without all of the experimentation, I’ve got a few guide-lines for you.

Wine and Chocolate Pairing GuidelinesWhen you want a go-to guide for

wine and chocolate pairing, here’s what you really need to know:

In general, your wine should be at least a touch sweeter than your chocolate.

This is also the case for other des-serts as well, and it explains why wed-ding cake never complements the dry sparkling wine it is most often served with at weddings. What a shame for both the bubbles and the cake! But I digress. When matching chocolate and wine, the darker, more bitter choco-late with a higher percentage of cacao typically goes with the more tannic and bolder wines.

Following that rule, here are a few successful pairings:

• Milk chocolate with sweet Riesling or dessert wines• Dark chocolate with Merlot or Petit Syrah• Dark semisweet chocolate with Merlot or Pinot Noir• Dark bittersweet chocolate with Cabernet Sauvignon or Zinfandel

Now that you know the rules, I would like to encourage you to give them a try and play around with them a bit. Keep in mind that you may not feel that every Merlot or Petit Syrah will go with dark chocolate. So, to ex-plore, you might consider opening several Merlots with one or two dark chocolate options and trying all of the combinations. Or, you might want to gather several chocolate options and two wine options each of two varieties. For example, two bottles each of Merlot and Petit Syrah.

Wine is meant to be explored, and just like you and I may not agree on our favorite wines, we might also not agree on our favorite wine and choco-late pairings. I think the best way to find out what you like is to give a few combinations a try. And, I can almost guaran-tee doing this on a date night or even with a group of friends can be a lot of fun. Open up a few different bottles of red wine, pull out some different chocolates and see what you like best.

Here’s to a happy Valentine’s Day with lots of wine and chocolate. Cheers!
