It is no secret that each of us has an impact on and is affected by thosearound us Be it through professional social public or personal contactwe learn and grow from each experience In other words no matter whatform the interaction takes it leaves an impression for good or ill on thosearound us As a proud Past-Chair of the AWS-Detroit Section it has beenmy privilege and pleasure to see the positive effect that we as an organizationcan have on others whether they are a part of the welding communityor not However even I was surprised when informed about one suchinteraction and the affect it had on someone I did not even know Anindividual not from the Detroit area or even a part of the weldingcommunity

To set the stage one must understand that I did not consider myparticipation in the AWS-Detroit Section when I moved into the downriverarea Grosse Ile to be exact But considering that most section events areheld either north or west of the city I typically had more than a few minuteson my hands during the ride home after a section activity One way I utilizedthe time was to call friends and family (hands free of course) and discussthe news and events of the day My sister Elizabeth was especiallyintrigued by the amount of scholarship work we (as a section) were a partof Well unbeknownst to me she was relaying the subject matter of ourtalks to her husband Steve and his father Robert (Bob) Francis Cahill Bobtook a very keen interest not only in our efforts with regards to scholarshipsbut also with the field of welding and continually peppered both Elizabethand Steve for information

This curiosity came naturally to Bob the first in his family to graduatefrom college when he earned a degree in civil engineering from OregonState University He was also a veteran of World War II who eventuallyserved as a navigatorbombardier on a B-52 An accomplished civilengineer Bob was part of the team that created a football field sized platformthat moved rockets from the hanger to the launching pad He was alsoa member of the Society of Automotive Engineers Bob Cahill passed awayon September 6 2012 He was 91 years old

When the story of Bobrsquos passing reached me from my sister it came inthe context of the family wanting to know how they could help the AWS-Detroit Section in their scholarship efforts To put it mildly I was morethan a bit surprised at this request However once I heard the back storyI was stunned Here is a retired Air Force officer living on the other sideof the country who wants to help the Detroit section make a difference Iwas told the reason the AWS-Detroit Section was selected by the familywas that Bob became excited about welding as he researched the subjectparticularly how materials could be used together in unique ways andwanted to help make the industry more viable Apparently classes onwelding were not an option when he went to school To help fulfill therequest of the family and to honor his memory the AWS-Detroit Sectionhas used the contributions from a memorial fund created in Bobrsquos memoryand made Robert Francis Cahill a Patron of the section As with all otherdonations to our sectionrsquos Patrons Fund the contributions in Bobrsquos namewill be used solely to fund scholarship activities in the section Mr Cahillhas accomplished his final mission

Ask the Welding EngineerBy Donald F Maatz Jr

We weld mostly aluminum extrusions in our shopand I have been told we have a couple of choices

for aluminum welding wire What choices do we haveand what are the differences

To help answer this question I have reached out to fellow AWS-Detroitsection Executive Board member Wes Doneth of Fronius USA LLC Wesis the Area Sales Manager (Michigan amp Indiana) for Fronius USA LLCand a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)

ldquoThis a great question Aluminum extrusions are primarilymade from 6000 series aluminum The 6000 series alloys

composed of Aluminum and Magnesium Silicide (Mg2Si) are verycrack sensitive when welded The primary issues are twofold in thatany welding must not only be done with the correct alloy but alsothe correct amount of it A simple test to verify the need for a fillerwould be to make an autogenous GTAW weld on the extrusionThe cracks should be visible immediately upon cooling thusvalidating that it is important to use enough filler when using GTAWAn example of the incorrect amount of filler leading to cracks canoccur with GMAW if you over penetrate and ldquodiluterdquo the weldingwire in the base metal The two most common filler metal alloysare 4043 and 5356 with other less common alloys being 40475556 or 5183 I would be remiss if I did not also let you know thatthe 6000 series aluminum is the most heat conductive alloy besidesthe 1000 series (essentially pure aluminum) and can be difficultto weld with lack of fusion and cold lap the most commondiscontinuities Crater cracks are also more of an issue so a propercrater fill technique is recommended It is also important toremember that you should never mix 4043 and 5356 in a weldThe combination creates a highly crack sensitive condition So ifin doubt grind out the old weld to pure base metal

The two common alloys have their positives and negatives 4043is a great all around alloy that gives a nice appearance and goodweldability It is very common choice for welding extrusions andwill normally yield deep penetration with GMAW As a result 4043is often preferred by manual welders Some negatives are that ithas low ductility meaning it will break normally before it bends(not to be confused with brittle) 4043 is more prone to crater cracksThis means that as with all aluminum welding a proper craterfill technique is recommended Also if you plan to anodize thepart the welds will turn black so be aware 4043 is also more difficultto feed so a good push pull system is a must

As for 5356 it is great for increased strength and ductility Itwill also anodize and will not turn black but the color match willnot be perfect 5356 also is less susceptible to crater cracks but aproper crater fill technique is still recommended 5356 hasMagnesium in it so when GMAW welding smut will be present alongthe weld toes 5356 also does not ldquowetrdquo as well and normally isnot as visually appealing as 4043 Finally 5356 does not carry asmuch amperage as 4043 so it will not penetrate the base metalas easilyrdquoIf you have more questions about this topic Wes can be reached at Fronius USALLC 10421 Citation Drive Suite 1100 Brighton MI 48116 Tel 810-844-2800Mobile 810-333-5008 donethwesleyfroniuscom

The US Department of Commerce tellsus that standards and conformityassessment impact more than 80 ofglobal commodity trade From design andmanufacturing to distribution andmarketing all aspects of your industryrsquosproducts and services are affected at somepoint by standardization

Hundreds of standards developing organizations(SDOs) and consortia are engaged in the creation andmaintenance of standards used in virtually every industrysector These SDOs ndash and the experts who populate theircommittees ndash work to enhance quality of life and improvethe competitiveness of US businesses operating in theglobal marketplace

The American Welding Society is the primary SDOproducing codes specifications guides recommendedpractices and books related to welding and joining TheAWS Technical Services Staff works with over 200 technicalcommittees to create approve and publish more than230 technical documents for the welding industryincluding one of the worldrsquos most widely used standardD11D11M Structural Welding Code-Steel

Unfortunately in recent years there has been a steadydecline in participation in the AWS standardsdevelopment activities Your help is needed to reverse thisalarming trend

Companies and individuals that participate instandards development activities stand to gain a morecompetitive advantage than those who do not participateThe participants get insider knowledge and early accessto information are able to exert influence on technicalcontent and they have the potential to develop newmarkets for products services and technologies

One Person Can Make aDifferenceSubmitted by Donald F Maatz JrPast Chair ndash AWS-Detroit Section
