Keweenaw Spark Plug Awards Dinner!
The Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce (Chamber) along with
the Keweenaw Economic Development Alliance (KEDA), MTEC
SmartZone and Keweenaw Young Professionals (KYP), are
hosting the third annual Keweenaw Spark Plug Awards Dinner,
a local business awards ceremony, on Thursday, February 12,
2015 in Houghton.
The community has the opportunity to recognize local
businesses and individuals for their outstanding efforts in the
2014 calendar year.
The celebration will take place at Michigan Technological
University in the Memorial Union Ballroom, with Spark Plug
awards handed out in six categories (see page 11 for list) .
Spark Plug award recipients must be KEDA or Chamber
members, exceptions are made for the Person/Project of the
Year and Young Professional of the Year. Winners will be
chosen by the Spark Plug Award Committee, made up of board
members from KEDA, MTEC SmartZone, KYP and the
Chamber.
Community members were able to submit all nominations by
visiting the Chamber website at www.keweenaw.org from
January 1st to January 31st, 2015.

� Spark Plug Award for Growth – Company that has seen significant growth in employment and/or sales during the previous year.
� Spark Plug Award for Quality / Customer Service / Teamwork – Recognized by the community, other businesses, and customers for providing top quality products/services.
� Spark Plug Award for Innovation / Transformation – New or existing company pursuing new products or services that hold great promise for local economic growth and employment. Or, that has made a significant change in how they conduct business or in the products/services they offer, which has produced significant outcomes in terms of revenue or employment.
� Award for Community Development – A company, person, or activity that has had significant positive impact on the business community.
� Person / Project of the Year – A high impact person or project that is notable within the community and will provide lasting benefits to businesses and community members.
� Young Professional of the Year –A person under the age of 40 who made significant strides in our community and in their profession in 2014.
The dinner is open to the community. Tickets are $45 per person if reserved by January 31st, 2015 price will go up to $75 per person after that date. Reservations can be made by visiting the Chamber website or contacting the Chamber office at (906) 482-5240.

The Sponsorship and pricing is as follows: Signature Sponsor $10,000.00; Keynote Sponsor $5,000.00; Networking Sponsor $1,000.00; Centerpiece Sponsor $1,000.00; Candy Bar Sponsor $1,000.00; or Company Table Sponsor for $500. Thank you to those who have sent in your information.
The project, which began in January 2015, will require numerous closures of the lift bridge. While trying to minimize traffic impacts by scheduling closures at night, these closures may impact public transit, school athletic schedules or other activities. We do not have an exact schedule of closures at this time, but we will release it as soon as it is available.
The Michigan Department of Transportation has sent the Chamber a PDF document to provide some initial information about the upcoming Portage Lake Lift Bridge rehabilitation project. If you would like the document emailed or mailed to you please contact the Chamber. Phone 482.5240 or email: [email protected].
The major closures are:• In January 2015 there will be eight (8) 2-hour closures 2 am – 4 am• March 21st, 2015 a 11.5 hour closure from 8 pm with an alternate date of March 28th in case of weather
delay• In March 2015 there will be eight (8) 2-hour closures 2 am – 4 am• Also, during the months of January 2015 – March 2015 there will be 168 intermittent 15-20 minute
closures from 7pm to 6am.

Mileage Rates ChangingJanuary 1st, the IRS increased the standard mileage rate from $0.56 to $0.57.5 cents per mile. The new mileage rate for moving expenses will be $0.23 cents per mile.

EMPLOYERS WITH 5 OR FEWER EMPLOYEES NOW REQUIRED TO FILE UIA QUARTERLY
REPORTS ONLINE
Beginning with the first quarter 2015, all employers with 5 or fewer
employees are required to file their quarterly wage and tax reports with the Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) electronically. First quarter reports are due April 25, 2015. After that date, the paper form UIA 1025, Employer’s Quarterly Tax/Payroll report will no longer be accepted by the UIA.
This requirement came with the amendments that were made to the Michigan Employment Security Act in 2011 (P.A. 269), but is also a huge step toward the fulfilling an Agency goal of creating more efficiencies for both employers and claimants including paperwork reduction and more timely and convenient interaction with UIA for account management.
If an employer sends in a quarterly report in paper form after April 25, 2015, that employer will receive a notice from the UIA indicating that the paper form 1025 will not be processed and will not be returned. Financial penalties begin to accrue 15 days after the mail date of the notice. However, if a payment was received with the tax report, it will be deposited and the employers report will be credited.
Filing reports online is simple and convenient and can only be done through the UIA’s Michigan Web Account Manager (MiWAM). MiWAM also offers many other convenient and helpful features for managing your UIA account such as scheduling or making payments, responding to fact finding inquiries, filing UIA tax protests, viewing notices and letters from the Agency and more.
If you haven’t already registered for a MiWAM account, do it today at Michigan.gov/uia. Click on “Michigan Web Account Manager for Claimants and Employers.” Be sure to download or view the MiWAM Toolkit for Employers, which provides you with everything you need to know about how to use MiWAM, including helpful step-by-step instructions.

The mission of the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce:
SUPPORT BUSINESS: The Chamber supports businesses by providing information and referring inquiries to our local and regional economic development partners such as the Keweenaw Economic Development Alliance, Michigan Small Business Development Center, MTEC SmartZone, Entrepreneur Support Center, or Jutila Business Incubator.
ATTRACT BUSINESS: The Chamber provides information and referrals to people who want to visit or relocate here. If someone inquires about tourism, we coordinate with the Keweenaw Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. When someone is relocating a business or family here, we connect them to the appropriate community resources that meet their needs.
DEVELOP : The Chamber will continue to grow networking and visibility opportunities for small businesses. We will provide opportunities for ribbon cuttings, Eggs and Issues, and After Hours networking events, promotion and advertising opportunities, golf outings, annual membership directory, business referrals, and a monthly newsletter.
