Try to Go the Scientific Way
There is always a need to go the scientific way. Science is a systematised body of knowledge and thewestern thinkers made a singular contribution to the world by way of thinking in a scientific way. Logic is thebasis of science. We can reach correct conclusions by pursuing our intellectual endeavour in a scientific way.Science doesn’t accept things merely on the basis of assumptions. It goes all out on the hard platform of logic.Experimentation is the very basis of science. Renaissance in social life in India was inaugurated by drawinginspiration from the western science. Darwin, Karl Marx, Sigmund Freud were all scientific thinkers, though, ofcourse, they were subjected to much criticism. They wielded a lot of influence on Indian thinkers like RamMohan Roy, Swami Dayanand Saraswati and Swami Vivekanand among others. They taught India to go thescientific way. Social and political theories were also developed in India. They abundantly drew inspirationfrom western scientific thought. Even Mahatma Gandhi’s thought has drawn inspiration from western scientificthinking. At present also, there is need to develop scientific ways of thought, study and action. Only then shallit be possible for us to come out of the age-old aberrations of vague lines of thought and action.
In the nineteenth century wehave three main thinkers who hadrevolutionary ideas viz., Darwin, KarlMarx and Sigmund Freud. Darwinpropounded the theory of survivalof the fittest and established animalancestory of man. Karl Marx pro-pounded the theory of dialecticalmaterialism and said emphaticallythat man lived by bread alone. Therewas nothing beyond, mind andmoney meant everything in life. Freudsaid that instinct and emotions madethe life of man. He established theimportance of sex emotion and saiddiseases and evils are created bysuppressing this emotion.
There was sharp reaction to theseideas both in the eastern and westernworlds and revolutionary ideas wereput forward.
Nineteenth century is the centuryof renaissance of modern India. RajaRam Mohan Roy was the first toinitiate new cultural and social ideas.Other names are Dr. Mrs. AnnieBesant, Swami Dayanand Saraswati,Ram Krishan Paramhans and SwamiVivekanand. All of them put forth theideas that man did not live by breadalone. He needed something moreand this something more was moreimportant. They also said that mindwas not the ultimate reality. Therewas something more beyond. Thisgave man a spiritual character andestablished divinehood of man. Theseideas completely revolutionised thethought of the modern man and theybegan seeking new horizons in thespiritual realm.
This changed the whole pers-pective of study and research. Consti-tution of man was also studied in thenew light of modern science. It wasestablished that man was not only thephysical body but something more,
that is, he had other bodies also inwhich his consciousness worked. They further went to point out theundisputed superiority of man overother creatures. It will not be out ofplace to mention that Dr. Hindell andWilliam Crooks had worked againstDarwin’s theory of animal ancestoryand propounded the theory ofmutation. This gave a new impetus tothe idea of man’s divinity. Man wasseen in a new perspective. His freehands gave him great opportunitiesto work great things and this madehim great. One special thing aboutman was discovered that he was theonly creature who did things for thegood of others. This strengthened thespiritual character of man. It was manalone who constructed buildings andmade things of permanent value.
