February 2018 Dear St. Columbkille Families, It has been a very busy and exciting few months for PTU since we last published this newsletter. In December we sponsored the annual Breakfast with Santa and Pixie Shop events, both community favorites. Much of January was spent planning for our whole school Triathlon held on February 2 nd (more on that fantastic event on page 2). The Winter Used Uniform Sale was held on February 10 th . And now our full planning and volunteer efforts have shifted toward the six-week Fish Fry season, which is PTU’s biggest money maker, but also our biggest undertaking and where we need the most help from our families and Parish community. Lots of VIP points are up for grabs during the Fish Fries, so it’s a great opportunity to stock up on dress down passes and earn those raffle entries for our year-end cash prizes! Thank you, as always, to our wonderful volunteers and to those who support PTU financially through our fundraisers. You really are making a difference for our students, teachers, and school. Over the past few months, PTU has purchased heavy-duty, electric pencil sharpeners for the primary classrooms, and those teachers have been very grateful. We are now using the funds raised from the Triathlon to offer $100 to each homeroom and specials teacher to spend on items they need for their classrooms, such as new indoor recess toys and bins. These purchases are in addition to the things PTU pays for annually, including field trip buses, the teacher supply closet, teacher stipends for clubs, the emergency notification system, the Pay For It software, and much more. None of this would be possible without your volunteer work and generous financial support. Sincerely, Brenna Mazanek, PTU President The Volunteer Incentive Program is going strong. The point leaders to the right have already earned their reward coupons for free admission to a PTU Resale, a free meal at a PTU Fish Fry, and half-price admission to the spring Trivia Knight fundraiser. Now they continue to accrue dress down passes and raffle entries for every 5 points earned. Remember, we are raffling off $500 and $250 cash prizes in May. There are still plenty of chances to add to your family’s point totals. In fact, the upcoming Fish Fries offer the most reward points of any of our events. Leading a segment of the Fish Fries is worth 15 points, while volunteering is worth 3 points each time you do it. Fridays from 4-7 don’t work for you? No problem, you can help with our Thursday prep team, or come later on Friday to help clean up. If none of that fits your schedule, please consider donating bakery, which is also points-eligible. Dear St. Columbkille Families,

It has been a very busy and exciting few months for PTU since we last published this newsletter. In December we

sponsored the annual Breakfast with Santa and Pixie Shop events, both community favorites. Much of January was

spent planning for our whole school Triathlon held on February 2nd (more on that fantastic event on page 2). The Winter

Used Uniform Sale was held on February 10th. And now our full planning and volunteer efforts have shifted toward the

six-week Fish Fry season, which is PTU’s biggest money maker, but also our biggest undertaking and where we need the

most help from our families and Parish community. Lots of VIP points are up for grabs during the Fish Fries, so it’s a

great opportunity to stock up on dress down passes and earn those raffle entries for our year-end cash prizes!

Thank you, as always, to our wonderful volunteers and to those who support PTU financially through our fundraisers.

You really are making a difference for our students, teachers, and school. Over the past few months, PTU has purchased

heavy-duty, electric pencil sharpeners for the primary classrooms, and those teachers have been very grateful. We are

now using the funds raised from the Triathlon to offer $100 to each homeroom and specials teacher to spend on items

they need for their classrooms, such as new indoor recess toys and bins. These purchases are in addition to the things

PTU pays for annually, including field trip buses, the teacher supply closet, teacher stipends for clubs, the emergency

notification system, the Pay For It software, and much more. None of this would be possible without your volunteer

work and generous financial support.

Sincerely,

Brenna Mazanek, PTU President

For Catholic Schools Week this year, the PTU wanted to do something special for our students, teachers, and school community to celebrate all that we have at St. Columbkille School. And celebrate we did!

Headed by PTU President Brenna Mazanek, the Triathlon committee, which included both teachers and parents, developed the three concepts of Think, Move, Pray! Along the way, plans came together for a t-shirt design contest, a fundraiser, raffle baskets, and fun special guests to kick off the day.

On February 2nd, the final day of Catholic Schools Week, the students attended their regular Friday Mass. Then the whole school met in the gym for a special presentation by the Cleveland Cavaliers Scream Team! Energy was high, as the Scream Team hosted a dance-off with students and a line dance with teachers, then stuck around for meet-n-greets and group photos with each grade!

Students then rotated by age group through a spelling bee hosted by Mrs. Cerny for Think, 8 fun activity stations in the gym for Move, and a scavenger hunt/service craft for Pray. All the pieces of the craft (flowers, greenery, butterflies, bees, and sympathy cards) were assembled into flower arrangements that Fr. Suso will help distribute to grieving families in our Parish.

We extend our sincerest gratitude to all the members of the Triathlon committee, and to everyone who supported the event by volunteering, buying t-shirts, or through pledges. We also thank Petitti Garden Centers for donating flower pots, and our raffle sponsors: Make Believe, Lolly the Trolley, Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, Verso, Pizza Fire, B.A. Sweetie’s, and Functions of Life Gym.

Breakfast with Santa

Pixie Shop

Fish Fries! Fish Fries! Fish Fries! We need all the volunteers we can get this Lenten season in a wide variety of

roles, including Thursday prep, Friday setup, order takers, kitchen cooks and servers, takeout order fillers, bakers,

bakery table workers, and cleanup! Students needing service hours are also welcome. Instead of giving

something up this Lent, do something good for your Parish community by volunteering at our Fish Fries. Contact

Yvonne Chmielewski ([email protected]) to volunteer in any way.

Lisa Beilstein and her Trivia Knight committee are busy planning this evening of fun and fundraising for April 14th.

If you are able to volunteer that night, have ideas on how to make this a great event, or ideas for raffle

baskets/donations, please reach out to Lisa ([email protected]).

Leeann Hochevar is chairing the Sacrament Celebration Lunch in May. It’s a special event the week following First

Holy Communion, when our 2nd and 8th grade prayer partners get together for lunch. PTU provides some of the

food and small gifts. Contact Leeann ([email protected]) if interested in helping.

Graduation Reception. Traditionally the 7th grade parents host a reception for the graduating 8th graders and

their families following the graduation ceremony, being held this year on May 29th. We are currently looking for a

chairperson for this event. Please contact a PTU Board member if you are interested.

The SCS PTU ushered in the Christmas season with its annual Breakfast with

Santa event on December 2nd. Children played Bingo, saw magic tricks, made

holiday crafts, visited with characters, got prizes from the “Pocket Lady,” and, of

course, told their wishes to Santa himself! Families feasted on breakfast, featuring

IHOP pancakes, and tried their luck at our basket raffle. Event Chair Sarah Krause

thought it went very well and was thankful to all the volunteers who made the day a

success. The event profited $1,500 for PTU.

Thanks again to Becky Bryda and her Pixie

Shop committee, as well as all our volunteer shoppers & wrappers. Roughly

2,800 gift items were purchased by our students at the low price of $1 per item on December 5-6th. Becky already has about 1,500 items purchased for next year, and bargain hunting for this annual favorite

does continue all year.
