at the last waterside meeting we discussed the continuing maintenance needs of the docks and club boats. The Proline, and now Gizmo and Pegasus (who came up with these names? LOL) are all out to the repair shop for much needed maintenance and repairs.

We were looking to hire a day-labor staffing company to help paint the dock pilings. However, the company declined our request when Tom explained that the workers would have to hang over the water by one arm while working from our “very stable” floating mainte-nance dock. I don’t see the concern; we were going to give them life jackets… anyway, on to plan B.

Slip #19 came open with the departure of Initium and we’d like to welcome Peg Leg as our newest marina tenant! I’m just happy to have a boat in that slip that I know what the name means! Don’t worry, I looked it up: Initium is Latin for At or to the beginning. Mr. Tom Davis may correct me on this, but that’s what I found in the Google box.

The next waterside meeting is scheduled for February 13th at 6 p.m.

I travel a lot for business so you may see some funny dates for these meetings. However, I will be sure to give everyone plenty of advanced notice --because I know you don’t want to miss it!

See you at the next Waterside meeting - and around the club!!

I can be reached at [email protected] or on my cell by text @ 727-729-2399.

2018 IS OFF TO a GrEaT STarT aT CyC! We’ve already had many great events and fantastic participation by our members. During the weekend of the 20th, Clearwater Yacht Club hosted the International Order of the Blue Gavel, an organiza-tion of Past Commodores that features seminars, speakers, meetings, and more information sharing. Many of the at-tendees commented on the quality of our service, food and most importantly, how friendly and welcoming our Club is.

The revised 2018 budget was adopted by the Board of Trustees on January 23rd. Vice Commodore Phil Beauchamp and the House and Grounds Committee are putting the finishing touches on the Dry Dock and restroom remodel project and working on various other initiatives to continue to improve your Club.

Enclosed in your Compass is a calendar for the next two months. I would like to encourage every member to get involved – all committee and board meetings are open to you as a member of CYC. Please attend, par-ticipate or just sit in and observe. If nothing else, it is a great excuse to go out to dinner on a weeknight! We can always use fresh ideas and solutions for the future of the Club.

YachtingBy PC Tish Wold yachting Chair

WhIlE SO muCh is made of the cold and fog this time of year, the Yachting Committee is busy getting ready for our biggest event of the year! For the 17th year in a row, Clearwater Yacht Club will be hosting Laser Mid Winters East regatta.

Each year, between 160 and 200 sailors will bring their 14-foot dinghies to Clearwater to compete with other sailors from as many as 15 nations. Some come with coaches, some without. Some have already been here for a few weeks, because as you can imagine it is difficult to sail in Canada this time of year, unless you are ice sailing.

Every year, the Yachting Committee and a whole host of club volunteers, as many as 50 volunteers and 14 boats

each day for the entire four-day event plus registra-tion day. Volunteers do everything from registering and checking in sailors and coaches, to serving the partici-pants breakfast in the morning and soup after a long day on the water, to being on the water (in all kinds of weather and sea states) to set up and maintain a compet-itive race course for these athletes. Some club members have offered their homes as accommodations for race judges, saving the club hotel money.

For those of you not familiar with a laser, it is a single-handed dinghy, and an Olympic-class boat. In other words, these same types of dinghies are competing in the Olympics! And, in years past, we have had competitors here in Clearwater who have gone on to medal in the Olympics! So, what better opportunity to get an up-close look at some world class athletes!

But Laser Mid Winters East isn’t the only thing we’re working on! We have three more regattas that we are ei-ther hosting or supporting in the following two months!

In addition to doing Race Committee, we will also take our own sailboats out to participate in Beer Can racing both on Sunday, Feb. 4 and Saturday, Feb. 17. If you are interested in participating, please email me at [email protected] to be added to the email group that sends out details on these races.

We look forward to seeing you on the water!

nEW DInInG mEnu Specials every month! Yes, Chef John has created new monthly spe-cials for appetizers, entrees, salads, and desserts. Look for these in the front cover of the menu fold-ers. Many new items have already become a popular hit and new spe-cials are already being planned for February. Yum! Your Comment cards are always welcome with your menu and service ideas, so please take the time to fill them out when dining.

The Dry Dock and men’s restroom renovation proj-ect is finished. Next, we are developing a plan for the women’s restrooms in the Dry Dock and main dining room.

We would like to schedule a Saturday Members Work Party in the Spring. There’s lots of small jobs and several cleanup projects around the Tiki, grounds and our building that we can tackle in a day. Please bring ideas to me that you would like to add to our list, or, best yet, come to our monthly House and Grounds meeting where we all meet on the first Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m.See you at the Club!

Sailing, Socials and ServiceThe Bow Chasers do all three—sailing, socials and service.

Most of our members, about 80 percent, join strictly for our social events. Another 20 percent enjoy our weekly sailing opportunities. All CYC ladies, landlubbers included, are wel-come to join the Bow Chasers. Want to give us a try at one of our parties before you join? Contact Membership Chair Mary Lou Dean at [email protected] and she will give you party details. A fun time is guaranteed for all.

Soup Cruise on the horizonWhat on earth is a Soup Cruise? It’s our annual winter

social where the Bow Chasers bring their favorite soup to share. Be sure to join us on February 7 at Cathy McNally’s for an evening of fun and eating. And if you don’t want to bring soup, wine and appetizers are always welcome.

Very Special march Event We’ve got something new, fun and exciting planned for

our March 3 event. It’s a Saturday and we are going to start by touring the beautiful historic Palm Harbor house pictured in this article. We’ll follow the tour with lunch in downtown Palm Harbor. If you haven’t had enough fun by then, stay for the 2nd Annual Palm Harbor Craft Festival. Mitzie France is hosting this event and that guarantees a fun time.

White ElephantOur White Elephant party was a terrific success. We

laughed whole-heartedly as we unwrapped our treasures or stole the perfect gift someone else had. The weather was balmy and we enjoyed chatting outside. We had so much fun that it might just become a tradition.

FWSa honorsCaptain Judy Umeck led a contingent of Bow Chasers to Pass-

a-Grille for the Florida Women’s Sailing Association general meeting. We brought home the annual Spirit Award, which you can see in the CYC clubhouse for the next six months. We enjoyed the presentation by researcher and author, Ann Weaver, who revealed the 25 amazing things dolphins do.

For the love of SailingThe Bow Chasers are hosting the FWSA Interclub Race

at CYC on February 13th. Four clubs will compete as we race in our basin. Make a reservation to join us for a Valentine themed lunch.

Until next month, remember that the cure for anything is salt water.

The CyC Cruisers began 2018 with a trip across Tampa Bay to Sarasota. Eleven boats braved the chilly, sometimes foggy, weather to enjoy a long weekend hosted by Joan and Don Carter. Most boats arrived on Thursday and the die-hards in the group stayed through Monday.

Since we were trying to stay at yacht clubs during a busy winter season, and we had such a large number of boats, the group was evenly divided between the Sarasota and Bird Key Yacht Clubs. Both clubs hosted dinners and happy hours for our group as we Uber-ed back and forth between the two clubs. We had 26 people at our largest gathering, some of whom were on their very first Cruiser’s weekend.

As with most trips to Sarasota, the group had a great lunch at Tommy Bahama, followed by some “bargain” shopping in St. Armand’s Circle. Most of the guys elected to forgo the shopping in favor of watching basketball and football in a sports bar. The weekend highlight was Saturday night’s dinner, upstairs at Marina Jack over-looking Sarasota Bay, followed by music and dancing.

February 23-25, we’ll spend the weekend at Little

Harbor Marina in Apollo Beach with game day and a wine tasting. Another great trip to downtown Tampa’s Convention Center and the Marriot for St. Patrick’s Day (March 15-18) is being planned by the Meyers. A sneak peek at the itinerary shows there will be something for everyone – and we’ll get to see the emerald green Hillsboro River! This is a trip you will not want to miss!

If you’d like to join our cruises, be sure to make your reservation with me well in advance to make sure you will have a slip. You can reach me at 813-300-4176 or by email at [email protected]. Non-boaters are

always welcome to drive and join in the fun!Join the Cruisers on the second Wednesday of the

month at 6:30 p.m. in the Dry Dock to socialize and plan upcoming trips. Most of us head upstairs afterwards for dinner. Everyone is welcome!

Sailing Activities

COlD WEaThEr has put a damper on youth sail-ing activities this month but Program Director Ned Covel reports that work continues in preparation for warmer days to come and the renewal of Saturday programs this coming Spring. Ned is busy with new ideas and reorga-nization of existing programs to better serve our young people and to provide further “learn to sail” opportunities for adults. I will do my best to keep you posted as things progress. In the meantime, if you are interested in future classes and would like to be in touch with Ned you can reach him via email at [email protected].

Warmer weather is on the way and before we know it, CYC will be celebrating our annual Blessing of the Fleet. Several members have purchased new boats, and I will be available for pri-vate blessings as requested during the Blessing of the Fleet. Please let me know ahead of time and I will do my best to make that a very special event for you and your family.

Wishing you the blessing of fair winds, happy engines, safe travels, good health, and the love of family and friends.

Father Bob Wagenseil (727)-510-6153 [email protected]

WOW! Did we have a January?? It seems to have come and gone with the speed of light along with a lot of up and down weather changes. The first 3 weeks disappeared in the brain fog of another very successful New Year’s Eve party as well as some very cold nights. But true to form, our members rebounded with a great turnout for Christy Crist’s playoff Dock party on the 21st and our annual Chili Cook-off on the 28th.

February starts with the super Bowl on the 4th and you can be sure the TVs will be on and the bars well stocked no matter what the weather! Our always popu-lar Trivia night begins at 7 p.m. on the 8th and you need

to make your reservations for the Valentine’s Dinner Dance on Saturday the 10th. We will have the Scott Koffman Band (from the Mingle Jingle party) back to play that evening. For those who want to celebrate on the actual Valen-tine’s Day, Peggy Morris will be playing smooth jazz that eve-ning in the main dining room and Chef John promises to come up with a special menu for the occasion.

For those who can’t make it to N’Awlins for Fat Tuesday, Chef John will have specials like etoufee, jambalaya and gumbo on the 13th.

Sunday the 18th will chal-lenge all you chowdah lovers to a taste fest from our members at the annual Chowdah Chal-lenge held in the Dry Dock.

Come to show off your best or just to enjoy the tastes!

Don’t forget, the Enter-tainment Committee meets on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. (that’s the 13th this month) and all are welcome. This is your Club and we want your input to make it the best Club to belong to.

FEBruary IS hErE! Please be sure to check your calendars so you don’t miss out and continue to read the Constant Contact emails as well!

Now’s the time to reserve your table for our annual Valentine’s Dinner Dance on Saturday, Feb. 10! We have a new band playing – the same ones that knocked it out of the park during our first ever Mingle ‘n Jingle Holiday party in December…and they were awesome! This will be a dressy night, so polish those dancing shoes, try on that pretty dress, and call for your table. This will be served banquet style with a set menu, so reservations are paramount, please.

Since the actual Valentine’s Day – the 14th – is on a Wednesday, we’re featuring our Valentine’s Couples Dinner along with a live jazz duo! We’ll have our full menu available along with 3-4 delicious specials from Chef John and his able galley team.

Thanks to Christy Crist and the Entertainment

Committee for hosting our 1st Dock Party of the new year, our Football Playoff Dock Party – what big fun that was! Perfect weather for a patio party, great football on the big screen TV’s, drink specials and unique sandwiches! Super turnout (thank you!), and the perfect way to warm up for our…Super Bowl Sunday party!

Hosts Joe & Helen Correia have helped with this party for many years, and the fun begins at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 4. Since it’s the Patriots vs the Eagles, you just know it’s going to be a big game! We’ll have our killer football menu – wings, dogs, ribs, nachos, you name it! We’re hop-ing the weather is perfect for us to party downstairs, but if not, we’ll simply come upstairs as we did years ago and watch the game. Oh, yeah, that football pool that Helen runs…count on it!

Thanks to all members & guests that attended our an-

nual Chili Cook-off – how fun was that? Chili, draft beer, chili, salad, chili, ice cream, chili, beverages, chili…you get the idea!

There’s only one other Club party that members cook

& bring in their best recipes, and that’s the CHOWDAH CHALLENGE! Hosted by Helen Correia (seems like February is her favorite month!), this year it will be on Sunday, Feb. 18. Dust off those recipes and enter yours now!

Keep those comments coming! It’s important that we

know how your experience is here – from the taste of the meals to the quality of your service. We want to make your club the first place you choose to dine, and the place you want to bring friends and guests to impress them!
