Time flies when you are having fun and I must be having lots of fun because I can’t believe I am putting the February edition together already.

Of course, February is the month of love but personally I think love should be appreciated every day of the year. GREAT WALL OF CHINA TREK FOR THEATRE GENERAL MANAGER

Aylesbury Waterside Theatre’s General Manager, Lee Duffy, is this year embarking on the challenge of a lifetime trekking the Great Wall of China for Florence Nightingale Hospice as part of their 30th Anniversary celebrations. The challenge takes place from 2nd-10th November.

The venue manager signed up to the mammoth challenge as part of his New Year’s Resolution to get fit. He said:

‘I am feeling excited and at the same time terrified about the adventure I am about to embark on! This is no ‘walk in the park’; it is going to require months of training and getting myself into tip-top condition. Over the next ten months I’ll be exercising at every given point and building myself up in order to walk continuous days. The trek itself will consist of walking along The Great Wall of China for nine consecutive days along differing terrains and in testing conditions.’

Aylesbury Waterside Theatre has a longstanding history of supporting the local charity since opening in 2010. Since then bucket collections have been held annually in support of the charity throughout the pantomime season, the venue’s hosted bake offs, entered teams to take part in their main

summer fundraiser the Midnight Walk, and in 2015 staff walked from Aylesbury to London in an epic 52 mile fundraiser in association with that year’s family pantomime, Dick Whittington.

Lee explained that he has lots of fundraising ideas in store to achieve his sponsorship target, and has already raised £170:

‘Alongside the ten month training period I will be hosting a number of fundraising activities in order to reach the £3,300 sponsorship target (another challenge in itself!) Raising money for Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity is my number one priority, their work is formidable and they’re an amazing charity; I cannot wait to be able to raise funds for such a worthy cause. Currently we have a Stage Door Tuck Shop set up with staff donating in return for treats – luckily for me the team has a very sweet tooth so that’s proving fruitful!’’

From 2019 the annual half marathon and 10 kilometre races, this year held on 14th July, will be renamed The Hell-Fire Half and 10k.The name change reflects the unique opportunity runners have to run through the historic West Wycombe Park, home to the Dashwood family and the infamous Hell-Fire Club, also referencing the “undulating” nature of the course.Starting and finishing at Adams Park, home of Wycombe Wanderers FC, the half marathon route will take participants out towards West Wycombe before turning through the gates of the West Wycombe Park and through the National Trust grounds past the majestic house.Runners will then head, via roads and woodland tracks, to Wheeler End and Bolter End, enjoying the quiet, twisting, country lanes to Frieth, before turning towards Lane End and heading back towards West Wycombe.Here the views over the Chiltern Hills are breath-taking, looking out towards the famous Golden Ball and Mausoleum before once again heading through West Wycombe Park and back for a stadium finish.

The 10k route will follow the same course, turning before Wheeler End and experiencing those hilltop views much sooner, before plunging down to the stately home and back to Adams Park.Simon Adams, Chairman of Handy Cross Runners, said: “We are extremely excited by the name change which we now think truly reflects this challenging but beautiful course. The Hell-Fire Half and 10k is the major event in our club calendar and we are excited to be re-launching it in order to donate even more money to our chosen charity. The new race village at Adams Park will have something to entertain both the runners and their supporters. We are grateful once again to Grant & Stone for their ongoing sponsorship of our events“.

FRIENDS FROM THE FROZEN LANDS

These hostile conditions force them to leave their autumn territories when bitter winds threaten their survival and dwindling food supplies beckon starvation. Then they are drawn to Britain to satisfy their needs, which is why they are often seen feeding on colourful and easily gathered red berries such as hip, rowan and hawthorn. In more recent years they have spread inland into conifer and birch woodlands, as well as into parks and gardens.

However, attracting Waxwings into a wildlife garden is presently a hit and miss affair because of their traditional habits. I have had no confirmed reports that they eat seeds, nuts and fat-balls from bird tables; so it seems that planting the right bushes and trees in wildlife gardens could be the best option currently available.

Historically, Waxwings could only be seen wintering in Britain on the East coast after escaping the worst of the extremely cold winters of continental Europe.

I just wanted to offer a few words of thanks to all the readers of my Hiya Bucks ‘Confessions of a Catsitter’ articles over the years.

I've had to stop writing them now due to other commitments, but also because the accompanying Hiya Bucks advert for our cat sitting service brought in so much business that we currently have a full customer base

and we've been able to stop advertising altogether for the time being (had I not used most of my article space to write about my own ineptitudes, we'd

probably have got even more.)

So, I'd thoroughly recommend Hiya Bucks as an advertising tool for local businesses. It's out on its own amongst local magazines in way of interesting and entertaining content, has good door to door distribution, and it's available in local supermarkets too (I once saw a lady chuckling

Many other birds and animals are learning to visit urban areas for easier food because they instinctively know that it increases their chances of survival in times of hardship. The issues of climate change, global warming and phenology (the timing of the seasons) are also affecting flowers, trees, birds, mammals and food chains that will have even more, albeit unknown, consequential effects.

My firm belief is that Waxwings will continue to visit Britain spreading their range westwards, and become more regular visitors to parks and gardens which supply their food. As they develop

their ‘Britishness’ further, who knows what will happen when more of them prefer to spend summers here rather than to undertake the huge trek across deathly seas in hostile conditions?

I have had my most successful year to date finishing the year as an International and National champion. I was one of only 12 to achieve the selection criteria for the World Equestrian Games and I beat a Paralympian at my grade for the first time; the first GB rider to do this. I

was also awarded a head collar at the British Dressage National convention for winning my class at the Nationals.

Despite not being selected onto the World Class programme my team and I will still be campaigning for the 2019 Europeans. I am really looking forward to stepping up another level with both horses and aiming for the 73%+ scores with Sky which we are already so close too!! I am also excited about starting public speaking as an inspirational speaker.”

Migraines and MeI was eleven when I got my first migraine. This is my story

about migraines and me.

You might have read before in my column that since being gluten free, I started eating a lot of quinoa.

If you haven’t heard the story a short version is… due to my migraines being so bad I visited a nutritionist who advised I take an allergy test which resulted in me finding out I’m intolerant to gluten. I thought this may be the end of my migraines but unfortunately not, although they decreased dramatically! I then ate so much quinoa I got severe stomach pain and noticed online that you shouldn’t cut out one thing and jump right into overloading with something brand new,

oops! I now can’t go near quinoa which is a shame because I really enjoyed it and it’s cheap!

Every now and then I eat something that is gluten free but I get the same pain, then realise that if I’d checked the label I would have seen that quinoa is in the food I am eating! The most upsetting product which this happened with is Olde El Paso gluten free wraps. My favourite food is Mexican, most likely American Mexican as I’ve never

Migraines and Me

actually been to Mexico! Last year on my birthday we made home-made Mexican food including salsa, guacamole, fajita style chicken then added cheese and sour cream on the side; all gluten free which is easy. I thought I would trial the new wraps and was so excited when they managed to wrap around my food without falling apart, they tasted amazing and I couldn’t even tell

they were gluten free, nor could my family! A couple hours later the pain hit me and I was gutted!

I decided to Google (as we always say now when we look something up online!) why quinoa was giving me a stomach ache. I found out (thanks to Live Strong) that “If your body isn’t accustomed to a lot of fibre in your diet, eating quinoa can lead to bloating and stomach pain. Too much fibre can cause abdominal pain because the bacteria in your colon isn’t used to digesting the amount of fibre in quinoa.“

I find it so interesting to read about diet, nutrition and how what you’re eating can affect your body. If you’re struggling with quinoa, or any other foods, I’d love to know. I also know a great nutritionist I can put you in touch with!

Mental Health MatesOur meetings are informal, involve a 45-60 minute walk and are followed by a coffee at a local café. They are open to anyone who is affected by mental illness or anyone who cares for a loved one who is affected. Family members, children, pushchairs and dogs on leads are all welcome.

The groups are not a substitute for medical advice or therapy but provide peer support and a safe, non-judgmental environment to walk and talk. As leaders, we have often suffered with mental illness ourselves (and in many cases probably continue to) and know the benefits of being able to talk with those with similar experiences.

How much Stamp Duty do you pay?There are several rate bands for SDLT. The amount of tax paid is calculated on the part of the property purchase price falling within each band:

• 0% is paid on the first £125,000 • 2% is paid on £125,001 to £250,000 • 5% is paid on £250,001 to £925,000 • 10% is paid on £925,001 to £1.5 million• 12% is paid on anything over £1.5 million

What is the higher rate of SDLT and when does it apply? All purchasers of an additional property, will have to pay an extra 3% SDLT, on top of the current rates for each band. If you already own properties but plan to buy a main residence to replace another, you are exempt from paying the higher rate.

If you own two properties on the day of completion of the purchase of your second property, you are still obliged to pay the higher rate of SDLT, even if you plan to sell your original property. However, a refund is available if you sell your former residence property within 36 months.

My partner owns another property, do I have to pay the higher rate?Possibly. The higher rate will apply to married couples / civil partners if one person in the relationship already owns a property. They are treated as a single entity for the purposes of

SDLT. If you are unmarried, then you may also need to pay the higher rate of SDLT.

What about property abroad?If you own a residential property anywhere else in the world, including a second home or a holiday let, you will be liable for the higher rate of SDLT.

There are some exemptions. Mobile homes, caravans and houseboats are exempt. In most cases, inherited property and annexes do not count as additional property. Generally, plots of land are exempt, as they are not categorised as ‘residential property’’, even if future residential development is planned.

I want to transfer my property to joint names with my wife, will I pay higher rates of SDLT?Yes, possibly. A transfer of a property which is subject to a mortgage can require you to pay SDLT on the transfer of a mortgage even though no money actually changes hands and both parties regard this as a gift. Usually I’m accompanied on these adventures by one of my daughters but today they both came along. It was lovely to get out of the office (for all of us) and enjoy some much needed fresh air; the sun even put in an appearance!

Walking gives me an opportunity to really switch off from my constant deadlines and it’s a great time to have a proper conversation with someone as there aren’t any distractions, especially if I switch my phone off!

This month we had a lovely walk around Forty Green. We began at the Royal Standard of England pub, reputedly the oldest freehouse in England. With roaring

log fires, secret hideaway tables and great food it is always worth a visit. You might just spot it on TV too as it’s a popular location for filming.

We opted for the one hour circular walk (about 2 miles) through the woods and across fields. There are some great views of the rolling Chiltern hills to be had and a couple of steepish climbs to get the lungs going.

There’s a map of the walk by the entrance to the pub or you can find it here www.chilternsaonb.org and search for the Forty Green pub walk. Bear in mind though that the instructions are written for you to walk in an anti-clockwise direction. We were

walking clockwise and had walked around half of the route before we realised something was wrong; we knew we were going in the right direction because of the map but the instructions just weren’t making sense … we laughed when it dawned on us!

Unless you are really passionate about new local music you’re unlikely to have heard the name Jacob Cole, but it very much feels like this could be a name worth remembering. Starting out as a musical theatre singer, Jacob has been performing since he was a child in various performances and productions, including a run in a West End production of Oliver! This academic year for Jacob has been an opportunity to get out and perform before he goes off to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and, for a young man of only nineteen, he speaks remarkably maturely with a great self-awareness of the industry he wants to work in and the hard work that he’s going to have to put in to get there.

‘Half of my life is really trying to perfect my musical art to the highest level,’ Jacob tells me matter-of-factly, ‘so I can become an opera singer or a choral singer, or something like that.’ These are heady ambitions, but there’s no hint of pretension on his part; this is simply the nature of what he wants to do. I ask if opera is the long-term goal.

‘My aim is to be in the music industry,’ he muses, ‘but you have to be so versatile; I compose, I organise music events, I even do some music production.’ His range of skills is impressive, but the desire to continue improving and learning is even more commendable. ‘I play piano and accompany myself…I’m taking my Grade 8 soon, but I only started learning 3 years ago.’

I ask Jacob about how he’s managing to find work and gigs. ‘I’ve had a few bookings for weddings…mostly it’s public things, charity events, birthday parties … and in September I hired out the Court Theatre and directed a night of music called Jacob Cole’s Music Night…with some super talented musician friends of mine which was amazing. More recently I’ve been busking a lot, Aylesbury, High Wycombe, Tring.’ That’s not to mention his Christmas show, Jacob’s Christmas Cracker Concert, which was a whole afternoon of festive cheer at the village hall in Pitstone. Jacob also sings with the National Youth Choir of Great Britain; a flagship choir made up of a select 80 voices from all over the UK.

It’s well worth keeping an eye out for Jacob; his ability combined with his levelheadedness will serve him well. If you see him out busking in Aylesbury and High Wycombe, he’s well worth stopping by and listening to. In the meantime, Jacob has plans for a night of swing music at the end of February with another of his talented friends so watch this space…

This is the second part of our tour of Flackwell Heath which requires no walking! Sally’s first

tour took us on an east to west virtual trail through the 1914 village of Flackwell Heath. This second tour will take us on a north to south virtual trail from Loudwater through to Sedgmoor and on to Little Marlow. Sitting in the comfort of the Community Library we’ll be visiting locations which were familiar to the ‘men on the memorial’ back in 1914. Each stop on the tour holds a story so come along to listen to the tales.

This is a ticketed event. The tickets are available at the library, and are £5 (£3 to friends of FHCL). Please note that tickets will not be available on the night.

Carrot Cupcakes

• 120g grated carrot

• zest of 1 orange

• 150g light brown sugar

• 125ml vegetable oil

• 100ml water

• 1 tsp vanilla extract

• 200g plain flour

• 1tsp baking powder

• 1tsp bicarbonate of soda

• ½ tsp cinnamon

• ½ tsp ginger

• ½ tsp nutmeg

Preheat the oven to 180˚C and line a 12 hole muffin tray with cupcake cases.

In a large bowl, combine the carrot, orange and sugar and stir. Measure the vegetable oil and water in a jug and pour into the bowl. Stir in the vanilla extract.

In a separate bowl, sift in the flour, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg using a sieve.

Pour the dry ingredients (flour etc.) into your wet mixture and use a spatula to fold the two together.

Spoon the mixture into your cupcake cases to fill up to 2/3 and bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes – until a skewer comes out clean. Allow to cool before icing.

• 100g butter, room temperature

• 250g icing sugar, sifted

• 1 tsp orange juice

Use a fork to mix together the butter, orange juice and about a third of your icing sugar to make a paste. Add in the remaining icing sugar and use the fork to whisk quickly and create a light and fluffy buttercream – alternatively use an electric hand mixer.

Spoon or pipe onto your cooled cupcakes and decorate with a sprinkle of nutmeg

When I’m looking at a vegan menu, what I’m praying for is something different than a simple salad or the usual falafel and hummus combination. Whilst I like both of those options, it’s nice to be offered something I’ve never had before and The Pomeroy, a gastropub situated between Little Chalfont and Amersham, wholeheartedly delivers on that front.

As the vegan trend continues to grow, I’m finding and reviewing the best vegan food Bucks has to offer by Matt BatsmanRESTAURANT REVIEW

The pub itself is lovely; a rustic aesthetic that really makes it feel like an old-fashioned country pub. It’s warm and inviting, and ideal for this time of the year for a pleasant meal out. With a whole dedicated vegan menu, it was genuinely difficult to decide between so many great options. Despite how good the spiced coconut curry and the roasted butternut squash and sweet potato tart sounded, in the end I opted for the roasted aubergine, spinach and harissa burger. I also ordered a side of tender stem broccoli with walnuts and chili on a whim.

I was out with my family on this occasion, so we shared some bread with oil and balsamic vinegar (all vegan if you avoid the butter) and some olives to get our appetites going. Luckily, we didn’t have to wait long; service was quick and our waiter, Michael, was speedy and attentive in making sure we got fed. The burger was crunchy and flavoursome with a very welcome bit of spice, complimented well by the sweet tomato relish it came with. The bun was also very

tasty, perfectly toasted to a tantalisingly crispy, but not hard, point. However, for me the star of the show was the broccoli. The combination of the sweet broccoli with the fieriness of the chili and the crunchiness of the walnuts was delicious, a real 10/10 dish. It’s a must-have if you eat here.

What’s even better about this vegan menu is that it offers dessert options. I opted for a chocolate tart, and this also delivered. The base was soft and chewy, which I much prefer to a base cooked to a crisp, and the chocolate filling on the inside was rich and creamy. It also came with a dash of chocolate sauce and a few strawberries and blueberries to add a bit of colour.

Overall, this was a really lovely meal in a lovely pub. At around £25 per head it’s not overly expensive, especially considering this was effectively a 3-course-meal, and the staff were extremely polite and friendly. It’s the perfect kind of place for a warm, hearty meal after a walk out in the cold. Highly recommended.

Property marking is one of many ways that residents can help the police in reducing bicycle theft by ensuring your bike is securely locked when leaving it out in public and not leaving it insecure at home.

Chiltern District Council and South Bucks District Council are encouraging residents to be more conscious of how secure their bikes are and if they haven’t already, get them property marked to reduce the risk of theft. Whilst some bicycles are returned to their owners, for some it’s impossible to reunite the bike with its rightful owner because the bike has no identifiable markings on it, or no recorded details such as frame serial numbers and size, make, model, colour or even a photo.

Bike marking is a quick, easy and inexpensive solution to the problem. A simple sticker with your postcode on, stuck to the inside of your bike frame, will inform the police of ownership.

To support the National Bike Week Campaign, Chiltern & South Bucks Community Safety Team will be providing bicycle security marking labels to local residents. If you would like a bike label, please contact communitysafety@chiltern.gov.uk with ‘bike label’ in the subject line or call us on 01494 586535.

As well as marking your bike there are other ways of preventing and reducing the risk of bike theft:

• Keep your bike in a locked garage or shed, as more than half of bike thefts take place from the victims’ properties.

• Always lock your bike when you are leaving it, use a strong lock and secure it to a bike rack where possible; thieves can lift bikes over signposts especially if the lock is loose.

• There are other ways to identify your bike, such as recording and registering it on https://www.bikeregister.com/ or investing in an electronic tagging system.

HIGH WYCOMBE CHORAL SOCIETY is a well established dedicated group, performing a

minimum of two concerts a year.

What is Message in a Bottle?

It is simply a plastic bottle containing paperwork about you and your health requirements and should be kept in the fridge at all times.

Why should I have one?

This bottle will contain important information about your health or that of the person you are caring for. Once completed, it will give details of your doctor’s name, the medication you are taking and any allergies you might have. Anything that tells the emergency services instantly about a person’s health. Paramedics and other staff have been trained to look in the fridge for these bottles to assist them with their care of you and this in turn will help to ensure that you receive the most appropriate treatment following any accidents in your home.
