Effective January 13, 2020, the temporary visitor restrictions to our family visitation policy were implemented. The Influenza (“the Flu”) virus is widespread in Georgia at this time. Our geriatric population is at high-risk for the Flu even with vaccination. The visitation restrictions are as follows: No visits by anyone under the age of 18 Anyone with symptoms of fever, cough, sore
throat, runny nose, stuffy nose, fatigue, headaches, body aches, nausea or vomiting should avoid visiting the facility until these have resolved
Until further notice, please abide by these restrictions to help us keep our veterans Flu free. Thank you for your assistance. If you have any questions, please contact Julia Eveker in Administration at 706-721-2531.

Heart disease is our nation’s number one killer. In fact, it is one of the most common diagnosed diseases here at Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home. Knowing firsthand the damaging effects of heart disease, we feel it is important for us to join Augusta University in its commitment to the American Heart Association 2020 Heart Walk. You may not be aware, but Augusta University and our community greatly benefit from the American Heart Association (AHA). AU is one of the top institutions in the nation for AHA research funding, with millions of dollars in research projects ongoing at this time. To help support AU and AHA, we have set a goal of raising $4,000 for the 2020 Heart Walk, and we need your help to reach our goal. If you can find it in your “heart” to donate to this worthy cause, you may do so by making out a check payable to The American Heart Association and direct them to Patricia MacDonald at Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home, 1101 Fifteenth St., Augusta, GA 30901 or by making an online donation. This year our theme is “Home Run for Heart”. To make an online donation, please visit www.csraheartwalk.org and click on the words DONATE TO A WALKER button, enter this year’s team leader’s name Amy Green and Megan Carter, and click the red Give Now button. Please send donations no later than March 20, 2020. All donations are appreciated! Whether or not you are able to donate, I hope you will consider walking with us on Saturday, March 14, 2020. You can join the Heart Walk at the SRP Park in North Augusta. To sign up as a walker, visit www.csraheartwalk.org and click the Find A Team button. Enter this year’s team name Georgia Warriors, click the Join Our Team button and get ready for a great day with family and friends walking for a cause. There will be a one mile walk and a three mile walk, your choice. Georgia War is also sponsoring competitions between each floor and other facility wide activities to reach our goal and support American Heart Association. Staff, visitors and residents of each floor are invited to participate in the competitions and events! Please see your floor’s Office Assistant for more details. Hope to see you all there! Thank you, Carlton Deese, Executive Director

Each February, during African American History Month, the nation remembers the important contributions African-Americans have made throughout U.S. history.
The National Guard's history is also replete with examples of African-Americans who served with distinction. A notable example existed within the three National Guard regiments that fought in World War I under the U.S. Army's 93rd Division: the 369th, 370th and 372nd Infantry Regiments. Although organized as an all-black division for the war, these regiments did not fight as one. Instead, each was assigned to French divisions, as the French were requesting the immediate use of American divisions to reinforce the French army. Each of the regiments took part in major combat operations and received battlefield accolades for their service with the French army.
Probably one of the most famous American units to emerge from World War I was the 369th Infantry, or "Harlem Hellfighters." Organized in the summer of 1916 as a result of state legislation authorizing the formation of a black National Guard regiment, the 15th Infantry, New York National Guard was called into federal service in July 1917 and ordered to France. After three attempts in crossing the Atlantic, the 15th landed in France in December 1917 and discovered it had been re-designated as the 369th Infantry Regiment. After being attached to the French army for training, it was assigned to the 161st Infantry Division of the French army.
..."seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected
accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history" - President Gerald Ford

Cont: The regiment took part in major operations in the Champagne-Marne, Meuse-Argonne, Champagne and Alsace campaigns — campaigns where front lines were retaken or German attacks were thwarted.
Overall, the regiment spent 191 days on the front-line trenches. For its actions, the 369th was cited 11 times for bravery and was decorated with the French Croix de Guerre with Silver Star for service during the Meuse-Argonne campaign.
In addition to having the unique distinction of receiving three nicknames: "Harlem Hellfighters," "Men of Bronze," and the "Black Watch," the 369th's regimental band was well known throughout Europe for its concerts and is credited with introducing American jazz to Europe.
Since World War I, the 369th underwent several reorganizations and is known today as New York National Guard's Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 369th Sustainment Brigade.

February is known as the month of love by many. Tina Turner sang a song that asked the question, “What’s love got to do with it?” Love has everything to do with it! Some think love is an elated emotion that a person may feel for a girl or guy that captures one’s attention. I believe these feelings have great significance in a relationship; however that is not love, but the condition of being “in love.” I have learned that love is not just a feeling but something we do. Love is tied to action; love must be shown. As I sit and think about love in action, my faith in God reminds me of the greatest love of all time. St. John 3:16 tells us how God so loved this world that he gave his only begotten Son and whosoever believed in him should not perish but have everlasting life. In that same book in Chapter 13:34-35, we’re commanded to love one another, and we’ll be known by our love one for another. We love others best when we love God the most. Love means nothing if it is not being given or meeting a need in someone’s life. The Apostle Paul draws a lovely picture of what love is and does in 1 Corinthians 13: 4-7. He mentions that “love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy; it does not boast; it is not proud. It does not dishonor others; it is not self-seeking; it is not easily angered; it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, and always perseveres.” My prayer as we celebrate the month commemorating love is that we will exemplify our love for the staff and residents here at Georgia War and allow our love to be seen by each other. -Chaplain Timothy Lark

If We Could Bring You Back Again By Joanna Fuchs
If we could bring you back again, For one more hour or day,
We’d express all our unspoken love; We’d have countless things to say.
If we could bring you back again, We’d say we treasured you,
And that your presence in our lives Meant more than we ever knew.
If we could bring you back again, To tell you what we should,
You’d know how much we miss you now, And if we could, we would.
