THE ROADRUNNER FEB RUARY 2020

Club Kokomo Road Runners

2 Cents for 26.2 miles I recently decided to run my first FULL MARATHON! I always said I would never do one, but when the chance

came up for me to not only run it but help raise money for a great cause I couldn’t say no! So here I am planning

to run my first full marathon. I’m a planner and a researcher. Like anything I do I want to be as prepared as possi-

ble! So, I’ve been scouring the internet for the best training plans and looking up healthy recipe ideas. One way I

know to prepare for something is to ask for advice from someone who has already done it. So I decided to reach

out to current and past club members for their advice. They were asked the following question:

“If you could give someone who has never done a full Marathon before one piece of advice what would you tell

them? or What is something you learned/realized after you finished that you wish you would have known before

the race?”

You will find there responses below! –Tiffany Massey

Everyone wants to follow a training schedule. I think that is a good idea

but if you need to deviate from it because of time or you’re just tired it’s

okay. I have found that the long runs are what gets you ready. So if you

need an extra day off take it. If you need to do fewer miles in a week it’s

okay. Just make sure you do the long runs and build your base and more

importantly your confidence. Try to do them at the pace you want to run

the marathon in. Enjoy the process.- Mike Deardorff

Try to enjoy your first

one...don’t stress about

your time and put trust

in your training - Michael

Lake

During your training de-

velop a plan and on race

day stick to that plan. I

wish I had known how

important pre race and

during race nutrition is

to success. - Scott

Deyoe

I took the advice of Mike Deardorff who had recently qualified for Boston.

He didn’t over train. I only had 2 weeks where I ran over 40 miles and it

was enough to qualify. I don’t think I would have avoided injury if I had

put in the miles that are recommended. I wish I had known before run-

ning the qualifier how important getting deep tissue massage is for a run-

ner. - Lorene Sandifur

"Endeavor to persevere." (Chief Dan George in The Outlaw Jose

Wales) Speed is optional, finishing is paramount, well, doing one's

best is. Doing a walk/run, especially toward the end helps a lot. Shuf-

fle to the next telephone pole (they used to have telephone poles),

then walk to the next one. Eat along the way. Talk to encourage other

runners and to be encouraged. And try to better in the next one... we

can always do a little better.- David Hughes

Well, I never followed a day to day schedule. I looked at a plan & then set what worked so I guess: Ad-just your plan to fit your life. There is no need to miss out on life because you’re following a strict schedule. Adjust to fit your family/ life. Life is too short. If your injuries or something is nagging listen to your body. You know it’s there, listen! Rest, recover, repeat. Ice is your best friend, pain or no pain. Boy did I not follow this advice & the result is no cartilage remaining in my knee/ constant pain over 5 miles & inability to train or run a ‘good race’- Heather Weber Find a friend to train with; someone who you know will hold you accountable to those runs.. a couple of friends to help break up those long training runs- T.A Weber

Don’t take it too seriously

and just enjoy the first one.

Then make a decision on to

improve or never do anoth-

er! It was just like I thought

so really tough after 20-22

miles.- Paul Sanders

“You just need to pace yourself,

it's not about speed but it is about

endurance.” -Anita Dillman

Don’t drink too much before the race, there will be water and/or

Gatorade to drink all along the course. Also, don’t tie your shoes

too tight! Just do it! You never know what you can do until you

do it. Never give up!- John Peters

Find running friends to tackle your first

marathon with. Enjoy the training miles.

Soak in the every mile of the marathon

because it will be a memory you will

have the rest of your life.- Jennifer Van

Horn

Have fun and go in with the goal to finish. A time goal is great, but you really have no clue what is about to happen. So many things can happen (and will) on race day, that you have no idea how to real-ly prepare for them. Train for the distance, and then run it for the finish goal. If you are looking for time, the best thing would be to go for that on the next one. My first one.. I was going along confident, and then it hit. It became hard. Going to the walk/run meth-od, I tired to keep going with the finish goal in mind. What happens is that you end up surrounded with people in the same situation as yourself. It becomes a "leave no man behind" situation. I remember that most about my first! Yes, you can kill time in your first. Just realize that even an experienced marathoner knows that the marathon is unpredictable! You can do everything right, and still not have a chance at your goal time. Weather, how you feel, cramps.. Etc. So many things can wreck the best laid plans. But we love the challenge of it. Training over time will give you more ability to overcome things that pop up during a marathon, but its just that you don't exactly know what they are until you do one.- Noel Shafer

If you are doing an out of town Marathon and you are seri-

ous about it, meaning that you are trained up and looking

for a PR or whatever, don't go on a walking tour of the city

the day before. Save the sightseeing for another day. An-

other thing is, have fun. More than likely you aren't going

to be setting any records so, have fun.- David Bruce

1. Anyone can do it if you train. Work up to it- do 5K, 10K, half. Builds confidence! 2. Do it with someone fun! 3. Don't worry about your time the first time!!! 4. Don't be afraid to walk & run especially if you are over 40...lol 5. Pick a destination & plan other fun things to do. 6. You don't have to run 26 miles in training. 20 is the most I ever ran in training. I was in my 40's [a late running bloomer] the most I ran was 15 miles after that. Too hard to recover. Lol - Robin Tetrault

My advice, based on my previous experience, is to not wor-ry that you will lose all your fitness by tapering your running mileage in the two to three weeks before the marathon. The rest will do you much more good than any extra miles you run during the taper phase.- David Gardner

For a person that has never done a

marathon the key is not to over train. I

realized that nutrition and hydration

during the run is very important. -

Keith McAndrews

Training is always important but what is key to success is your mental toughness. Another key is to let

the crowd give you energy and support. When you feel like giving up think about those who can't phys-

ically run. They would love to be in your shoes. Persist! - Brittiani Gillem

If it's a hilly, trail marathon, train on hilly trails. Cramping can

be horrendous!!!- Cara McKellar

Gradually increasing long runs- until

you reach a 22 miler. - Ricke Stucker
