Thank you for your support!

Hello readers:

This is a difficult time for all of us, unfortunately. I think the best I can do in service for you this month, is encourage you to practice optimism. This crisis will end eventually. Needless to say, that can't happen soon enough. What we do in the interim matters. It has never been so important to stay home and find ways to fill our time.

Having to stay home has made me realize that I needed to slow down. Although I sometimes feel anxious about not being able to go out, I am grateful that I have time to enjoy activities I didn't make time for previously. Being active makes isolating a whole lot easier.

I just watched an episode of Talks at Google featuring Frank Abagnale, a renowned Cybersecurity and Fraud Prevention Expert who has worked with the FBI for over 30 years. Abagnale is the subject of the book and movie Catch Me If You Can starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Until you hear Abagnale's story, it is hard to believe this man of high integrity stepped out into the world as a con man, cheque forger and imposter. Abagnale is brilliant.

At the end of his talk, Abagnale shares information on ways you can protect yourself against cybercrime. This is a video worth watching!

Click on the link below to watch the video.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vsMydMDi3rI&t=7s

For those of you who would rather listen to a book, Abagnale's books are available on Audible.

February 20th, 2021 Alliston Out of the Cold

will be hosting its second annual fundraiser

Alliston Out of the Cold provides safe, respectful and welcoming overnight accommodation, meals and support to those at risk or at-risk of experiencing homelessness and/or

food insecurity in New Tecumseth and the surrounding areas

The Coldest Night of the Year is a moment when tens of thousands of Canadians step outside the warmth and comfort of home and shine a light of welcome and inclusion. Together, we’re collecting donations that fund critical services at Alliston Out of the Cold who serves and supports vulnerable individuals in our community. • We walk through the cold and dark on February 20, 2021 to declare our concern for people who have

no home, and take shelter in nooks and crannies.• We walk for those whose days are a battle to house and feed their families, and whose nights are

filled with fear and frustration.• We walk for those driven from home by violence and abuse.• And we walk for people overwhelmed by isolation, guilt and despair.• We walk humbly, realizing that anyone can lose their footing and then lose everything else.• Each step we take brings someone closer to safety, health and home, as together, we raise funds for

Alliston Out of the Cold.

2020 has been full of challenges and the shelter has had to pivot and adapt to continue to support those in need during the multiple lock downs we have all experienced. Each pivot we make requires additional support, additional volunteers and additional funds.

Your support has never been more necessary than this year!

Here are some ways you can support us:• Become a corporate sponsor! Contact Alicia at [email protected]• Join a team, start a team, walk as an individual or donate to someone you know doing the walk.• Share our event on your social pages: tag us on Facebook and/or Instagram Help us spread the word!

AROUND TOWN: NEWS & EVENTS

Councillor's ReportWell folks, here we are again in the second month of 2021! Time goes by so quickly. This holiday season was very different than I have ever experienced in my lifetime. Dare I tell the truth and say that is over eight decades. However, with age comes

wisdom, as the story goes, and so we persevere.

I trust that you and your extended families have not experienced the ravages of COVID-19. We owe such a debt of gratitude to our frontline workers and our Medical Officer of Health for Simcoe County and his hard-working team.

Over the past several months, we have lost friends and neighbours due to serious illness, both in Green Briar and Briar Hill. They were all amazing residents and will be missed greatly. Sometimes the suddenness of their passing makes it hard to believe that they are really gone from our midst. Saying goodbye gives us closure but due to Provincial Rules related to the virus, everything is different. Our sympathy goes out to their families.

Council has asked the Province to lower interest rates on tile drainage loans and to also increase the yearly loan limit. The more land reclaimed increases the productivity of their operations. We have so many bona fide farms in New Tecumseth and Class 1-4 farmland is protected in most cases by Provincial Policy.

The Museum on the Boyne Committee is established and the log cabin is completed. Decisions related to the furnishings from our collection is next. COVID-19 does not allow entry to the Museum facilities at present.

Our joint OPP Policing Contract with Essa and Adjala-Tosorontio is finalized for 2020 onward.

Due to COVID-19, we may now order online from Walmart. A pick-up area has been designated by a sign by-law variance request.

The Safe Drinking Water Act Water Financial Plan 2020-39 pdf is on the Town website. All is well!

A remnant parcel of land at Treetops will allow for 55 new homes, however, it will have an “H” holding as it is waiting for a resolution to the Collingwood water expansion report and approval.

Tottenham and Tecumseth Beeton Elementary Schools will have the use of Town facilities as Alternative Evacuation Centres.

Grant Thornton, LLP has given Council the “Audit Strategy” for the year ending December 31, 2020. This is one of the checks and balances showing all is in order with the handling of Town finances under the appropriate Acts.

Aird & Berlis, Integrity Commissioner, attended the November 30, 2020 meeting to discuss Council’s role and demeanour as it relates to our Oath of Office and conducting business in a professional manner. Sometimes the Province changes the rules and we need to be apprised of changes and follow them at meetings of Council.

Smart Centres are now entering the next steps of their request to the Town to build some residential buildings, as opposed to more commercial buildings, on site.

For the next two years, Councillor Donna Jebb, Ward 5 will become the alternate Council member for New Tecumseth in the absence of the Mayor or Deputy Mayor at the Simcoe County Council meetings. The County has a weighted vote system and it is important to be at the table and have our voices heard on behalf of our residents.

Council held the Public meeting to continue toward establishing the Heritage Conservation District at the Centre and Main Street area in Beeton. The document done by the consultants is on the Town website. Many lovely areas in Ontario have done this; e.g., Creemore, Unionville, Old Markham Village, Elora, St. Jacobs and others. Places like these become Day Tripper destinations.

Please stay well. Happy Valentine’s Day to all. We need a time to celebrate and for a few hours, forget the isolation we are enduring. Let’s hope the vaccines work quickly and things will be fun again.

1. Tooth decay. Plaque caused by bacteria harms tooth enamel and causes cavities. One of the reasons older adults are at increased risk of cavities is dry mouth. Saliva helps protect the teeth and reduces bacteria, but dry mouth is a side effect of certain drugs commonly taken by seniors, such as medications for depression, asthma, and high blood pressure.

2. Gum disease. Two in three seniors 65 and older have gum disease. Severe gum disease, also called periodontitis, can lead to sore, bleeding gums, chewing problems, and tooth loss, among other health problems. Unfortunately, many people don’t know they have gum disease because it doesn’t cause symptoms until the disease advances. Good senior dental care and regular dental exams can help prevent gum disease.

3. Tooth loss is common in older adults. In fact, one in fi ve adults 65 and older have lost all their teeth. Tooth loss can affect nutrition because seniors with missing teeth may not be able to eat or enjoy fresh food options, like fruits and vegetables.

4. Heart disease. Infl ammation caused by gum disease increases the risk of heart disease. Gum disease can also make certain heart conditions worse and may be associated with a higher risk of stroke.

5. Diabetes. People with poor blood sugar control are at higher risk for dental problems, such as infl ammation and gum disease. This is because too much glucose (sugar) in saliva helps bacteria grow in the mouth. Gum disease also seems to affect blood sugar control in people with diabetes.

6. Pneumonia in older adults with poor dental hygiene, especially those who smoke, are at increased risk of bacterial pneumonia. This is because, as someone breathes, bacteria in the mouth can travel to the lungs. Maintaining good dental hygiene is important.

7. Oral cancer. Older adults are at higher risk for oral cancers. The risk is higher for people who chew tobacco or smoke cigarettes, pipe or cigars. Regular dentist appointments can help detect problems early.

REASONS

77to make senior dental care a priority

• Remember to brush twice daily with fl uoride toothpaste. A soft, electric toothbrush may make dental hygiene easier.

• If you’re forgetful, set reminders.• Floss regularly. Flossing daily helps prevent plaque

and gum disease as well as tooth picking.• Keep dentures clean and soak them nightly.• Schedule regular dentist visits. Regular

appointments can help prevent dental problems and keep teeth healthy. Seeing the dentist at least once a year for cleaning and a check-up is highly recommended.

• Tell the dentist about medical conditions and medications you’re taking. If dry mouth is a problem, we are able to offer strategies to help relieve it.

There is no need to be fearful about coming to see us. We are fully prepared to treatall our patients during this pandemic.

We’ve gone above and beyond in implementing important safety measures. Call today to book your appointment or an

appointment for your loved ones. We’re here to help.

2020 County of Simcoe Paramedic Toy Drive receives overwhelming community support(MIDHURST 1/8/21) On December 18th, County of Simcoe Paramedic Services announced it had wrapped and tied a bow on its 18th annual Toy Drive; however, thanks to the overwhelming generosity of Simcoe County residents, donations continued to roll in throughout the holiday season.

All told, 5,994 toys, 5,694 pounds of food, $32,178.05 in cash and $4,655 in gift cards were received and shared with those in need throughout the region, making this our most successful Toy Drive to date.

With this year’s new totals, the Toy Drive has collected 90,259 toys, 42,874 pounds of food, and approximately $209,090 in monetary and gift card donations for families across Simcoe County over the last 18 years.

All donations have been distributed to local children and families in need by charitable organizations working in partnership with County of Simcoe Paramedic Services, with new donations received during the holiday season provided to Simcoe Muskoka Family Connexions to help provide birthday gifts for children in need throughout the year.

County of Simcoe is composed of 16 member municipalities and provides crucial public services to County residents, in addition to providing paramedic and social services to the separated cities of Barrie and Orillia. Visit our website at simcoe.ca

Let me first say we are immensely grateful to blood donors for their cooperation, understanding and support during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Last year brought forth changes none of us could have predicted or imagined, and your support

means patients needing lifesaving care in the form of blood and blood products were able to receive what they needed, when they needed it. While we hope that existing donors will continue to give as much as they can, we know that new donors are critical to meeting Canada’s future blood needs. Across Canada, Canadian Blood Services must collect 17,000 units of blood every week.

We’re OPEN and we NEED DONORS:We would like to remind Ontarians that giving blood is permitted throughout the COVID-19 Pandemic, even during lockdowns. We encourage donors to book, and honour their appointments, to ensure an ongoing supply of blood and blood products for patients in need. We have been providing essential products and services for patients throughout the Pandemic and have implemented various measures in response to COVID-19 to ensure donors’ wellbeing is safeguarded at all times.

It's worth noting that blood donation is an activity that can help address feelings of helplessness you may have in the face of COVID-19. Find out if you’re eligible today and book an appointment at an upcoming clinic at blood.ca or on the GiveBlood app!

Please share with your network and encourage those around you to join #CanadasLifeline!

Stevenson Memorial Hospital celebrates the completion of their Level 2 ICU

(NEW TECUMSETH ON 1/20/21) Stevenson Memorial Hospital (SMH) is celebrating the completion of its Level 2 ICU, now called the High Acuity Unit (HAU). This is a milestone that the staff are very proud of, as the construction was halted on the project last spring due to the onset of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Despite the competing demands, the staff and leaders at SMH continued with the project with contractors in July and are thrilled with the outcome.

Since March 2020 SMH has had four inpatient beds in their Medical/Surgical Unit designated as Level 2 ICU beds to care for their highest acuity patients. The newly renovated space will provide

the right environment, in their considerably dated infrastructure, to ensure optimal care for their patients.

“I am incredibly proud of our team of staff who continued to manage this project amongst many competing demands during the Pandemic,” says Jody Levac, President and CEO, SMH. “This is a significant improvement to our facility as we wait for the redevelopment of our Hospital. Within our dated infrastructure we will continue to strive to enhance the patient experience until we receive an approval from the Ministry to move forward with revitalizing our Hospital,” he adds.

Once final testing and approvals are complete, the hospital anticipates their first patient will be admitted to the new unit in early February.

“We’ve renovated our existing space to accommodate the current standards, including the technology and equipment required to care for patients needing high acuity care,” says Carrie Jeffreys, VP Clinical Services & Chief Nursing Executive, SMH. “Our staff will continue to care for these patients, but in a space that is optimal for their care and recovery. After releasing a Canadian Video last summer, Alliston resident Cheryl Cerri got to work in her home studio to produce a new Christmas CD called 'Christmas Legacy'. She also created a video she named 'Cheryl Cerri Christmas Legacy Special';

a one-hour video featuring all of the songs on her Christmas CD.

Cerri said, "I wanted 2020 to close with something meaningful and positive and close to my heart. So, for that reason, I decided to create this collection of many of the most-loved Christmas songs. I wanted to bring some Christmas to the homes of those who were alone and had no one visiting, and those who could not be with family and friends or go to church, which was pretty much all of us. My goal and hope was that it would bring some Christmas to their homes during this pandemic. The Songs included on the CD are, It Came Upon A Midnight Clear, O Holy Night, The First Noel, Ave Maria Schubert, Auld Lang Syne, Silent Night, In The Bleak Midwinter, What Child Is This, Ave Maria Bach Gounod, Away In A Manger, a Classical O Holy Night and His Name Is Jesus, which is my original."

For two of the 12 songs on the CD, Cerri enlisted the talents of her mother, Eleanor Connors, an accomplished pianist, music teacher and director in Sudbury. Those songs include, Ave Maria by

Schubert and His Name Is Jesus, which is an original song written by Cerri. Mother and daughter collaborated on the two songs and created a video of each. Connors filmed in Sudbury while Cerri filmed in Alliston. Her mother then sent her a video of herself playing piano. Cerri then proceeded to edit both videos and produce two videos of them singing and playing together. Both can be seen on the full show of 12 songs below. All other instrumental music Cerri sings with is produced by a company in France; Tency Music, who she enlisted to create all of her instrumental backups.

Cerri proceeded to perform each song on the CD live and create her Christmas Special show, interspersing it with introductions and some life-long memories. Cerri released the video on Social Media. She received thousands of views and several wonderful comments.

Federal support dollars reach local branches of the Royal Canadian LegionOn Monday January 11th, Alliston Legion Branch 171 formally received the cheque that was issued to many of the branches across Canada from the federal government. The funds were issued to help with expenses that branches have had during the Covid-19 Pandemic with no income coming in.

The Royal Canadian Legion Command received $14 million dollars out of a $20 million dollar package earmarked for Veteran Organizations as part of Bill C-4, approved earlier this fall.

Terry Dowdall, our local MP, issued a statement from the Branch’s president in regards to how this cheque will help the Branch continue to run and help local veterans.

Apologizing profusely, the florist finally got her to calm down with the reminder that in some funeral home stood an arrangement bearing the words "Good Luck in Your New Location."

The following is adapted from The Sacred Balance: Rediscovering Our Place in Nature (Greystone Books), a book I wrote with Amanda McConnell in 1997 and updated in 2007. It seems as relevant today as when we wrote it, if not more so. I hope you enjoy it and that the year ahead brings new ways of seeing and thinking about the world so that we can finally find ways to live in harmony with each other and the natural systems that keep us alive and healthy.

For thousands of years, small communities of people ensured relative tranquility while providing for the social needs of their members. The explosive rate at which our species has been converted to an urban creature has been accompanied by a deterioration of the social fabric that held people together. The 20th century witnessed an unprecedented shift from predominantly rural community living to big city living.

In cities, distanced from nature and the primary means of production like agriculture, fishing, logging and even manufacturing, we accept that it is the economy that provides our needs. Technology has enabled us to travel rapidly and communicate over vast distances, while television, computers and portable entertainment devices sever the shared activities with neighbours and communities.

Consumerism has taken the place of citizenship as the chief way we contribute to the health of our society. Economic rather than social goals drive government and corporate policies. The resulting high levels of unemployment produce stress, illness, and family and community breakdown. Stable communities and neighbourhoods are a prerequisite for happiness, for productive and rewarding lives, for a crucial sense of security and belonging. They are a bottom line for the health and happiness of human beings. It is not economics

that creates community but love, compassion and co-operation.

Those qualities exist in individuals and are expressed between people. And they cannot be fully expressed in isolation, without context, cut off from their place in time and space, their source in the natural world.

The stability of family — whatever its form — within a community provides an environment within which a child develops curiosity, responsibility and inventiveness. Ecological degradation — deforestation, topsoil loss, pollution, climate change and so on — destabilizes society by eroding the underpinnings of sustainability. This consequence was graphically illustrated in 1992, when all commercial fishing of northern cod in the Canadian province of Newfoundland was suspended. Overnight, 40,000 jobs were lost as the foundation of that society for five centuries vanished.

All across Canada, towns boomed as forests were clearcut around them, only to crash when the trees were gone. The coast of British Columbia is dotted with villages that once supported fishing fleets and canneries but were abandoned as salmon populations declined. Ecological health is essential for full community health.

The need for meaningful employment is critical to the well-being not only of family but of community.

War, terrorism, discrimination, injustice and poverty mitigate against that social stability that is so important. Chronically high levels of unemployment, such as those found in the Atlantic provinces in Canada, on American Indian reservations or in Australian Aboriginal communities today, result in

despair, alcoholism, illness, even death. The need for meaningful employment is critical to the well-being not only of family but of community.

Besides the economic benefits to government and individuals, there are compelling reasons to seek full employment as a social goal.

An economy was once created to serve people and their communities. Today economic rationalists contend that people must sacrifice and give up social services for the economy. As we reflect on our fundamental needs as social animals, it is clear that families and communities assured of biodiversity, full employment, justice and security constitute the real non-negotiable starting point in the delineation of a sustainable future.

From family to neighbourhood, from neighbourhood to nation, out into the commonwealth of our species — the connection seems to attenuate as it becomes more inclusive.

From family to neighbourhood, from neighbourhood to nation, out into the commonwealth of our species — the connection seems to attenuate as it becomes more inclusive. But as we explore the continuum of relationships in any human life we start to see that the circle of inclusion extends further still; the “continent” of which we are each a part encompasses the Earth.

The “law of love” is as fundamental, and as universal, as any other physical law. It is written everywhere we look, and it maps our intimate connection with the rest of the living world.

Our February virtual journey takes us to Malivoire Wine Company located near Beamsville on the Niagara bench lands. The story of their founding resonates with

me. Martin Malivoire did not plan a wine career, but it found him nonetheless. It’s the same for many of us in the wine world!Malivoire’s initial vocation was special effects in cinema, where he was successful, working on films such as My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Resident Evil, and A Christmas Story. Subsequently, being a wine lover, he felt drawn to put down roots and purchased a vineyard in Niagara as his second career. He intended to grow grapes and learn a little about making wine. It turned out to be a slippery slope (in a good way)! He expanded his vineyard holdings in 1995 and established his winery where

it sits now on King Street. His place to “learn a little about making wine” is now over 20 years old.

His quest was to produce quality wines that showed a sense of place. He initially made the wines at Malivoire with the assistance of well known winemaker Ann Sperling. Then in 2000, a new graduate by the name of Shiraz Mottiar started with them as cellar hand. Mottiar was promoted to assistant winemaker within a year, and by 2005 took over the duties of winemaker. He embodies the best winemaking traits, which are the focus on excellent fruit and minimal intervention to produce superior wines. These qualities resulted in his being named Niagara winemaker of the year in 2017.

Malivoire’s Gamays and Chardonnays are particularly good and keep in mind you can order more of their offerings on their website for home delivery. Later, when we can move around again, stop by and visit them. I know I will.

In addition to Malivoire’s wines, various LCBO offerings are reviewed as well. As usual, my ratings are based on a 5 star system developed by Michael Broadbent: 5 stars: Outstanding; 4 stars: Very good; 3 stars: Good; 2 stars: Moderately good; 1 star: Not very good, but not bad; No stars: Poor.

Malivoire Estate Grown Chardonnay 2018 $19.95 (Vintages)

This wine was aged in stainless steel and used (neutral) oak barrels for 6 months. It was subsequently blended to produce a white with just the right amount of spicy oak influence. The flavours of apple sauce, vanilla, lemon peel, and crème caramel will linger making it pair well with chicken garlic cream pasta or your roast chicken stuffed with citrus fruit.Lakeview Cellars Serenity Sauvignon Blanc 2019

$15.95 (LCBO)Most of us are familiar with New Zealand versions of Sauvignon Blanc, but the grape in fact originates in the Bordeaux and Loire regions of France. This Niagara rendering is a zippy, fresh white with a fruity bouquet of lime pith, lemon, gooseberry, and mineral. The palate adds some tropical fruits to the mix. It would be best served with seafood, goat’s cheese, salads, or white meats.Melini Orvieto Classico 2019 $11.95 (LCBO) We're all looking for good values in the wine world. This white from Umbria meets that benchmark. It's a simple, refreshing white showcasing ripe honeydew melon, pear, lemon, grapefruit, and mineral. Good by itself before dinner, but it would be a nice accompaniment for Fettuccine Alfredo or seafood.Malivoire Che Bello Sparkling NV $17.95 (LCBO)This Niagara sparkler is made with a blend of Riesling, Seyval Blanc, and Vidal in the style of Italian Prosecco. This technique of making sparkling preserves the fruit and this has an abundance of yellow and green apple, lemon, and lime with a lightish body and a little residual sweetness in the finish. Pick some up for your Valentine and match it with charcuterie and cheese.Malivoire Farmstead Gamay 2019 $19.95 (Vintages)Malivoire has become known for its Gamay and you can see why. They use some time honoured techniques from Beaujolais, like 20% is whole cluster fermented, to enhance the fruit notes. The wine showcases pure, juicy strawberry, raspberry, red cherry, along with earth, black and white pepper, and sage. With its lower tannins and a lighter body,

it would enhance your smoked duck, tomato pasta, or sausage dishes.

Spinelli Montepulciano d’Abruzzo 2019 $8.75 (LCBO)

This is a case in point of inflated wine ratings in the marketplace. This is a good under $10 red and a good value. It is not, however, worthy of the 91 points touted on the label. My numerical rating would put it at 86. That being said, it’s a simple, pleasant, dry wine with plum, black cherry, spice, and a little earthiness to enjoy with your weekday pasta and pizza.

The Wolftrap Syrah, Mouvedre, Viognier $13.95 (LCBO)

This South African red blend delivers superb value for under $15. It has Syrah that gives it character, Mourvèdre for depth, and Viognier that lifts the aromas. You'll find plenty happening in your glass with intense dark plum compote, black and white pepper, smoked meat, clove, and vanilla. The smooth tannins and full body make it a good pairing for your mushroom risotto with copious amounts of parmesan or pretty much any beef dish, especially braised beef.

Chateau Le Cap 2018 $17.95 (Vintages)

You don’t often find Bordeaux and reasonably priced in the same sentence, but if you look in the Bordeaux hinterlands, like the Cote de Blaye, you can find some good, well priced wines. This blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon is tannic and could do with a few years of cellar time to evolve. If you want to try it now, decant to soften it. Then you’ll enjoy the black cherry, spiced plum, cedar, clove, tobacco, leather, and smoke that are concealed in this young wine. Beef tenderloin topped with truffle mushroom topping will bring out its best.

The executive have held many zoom meetings since the 2020 season ended. It also includes some of the tournaments we couldn’t hold, like the annual Mixed Event and Residents tournament. We're hoping we can hold these events as restrictions ease over the course of the year..

We have added in a couple of fun 4 man scramble events so that golfers can meet new members and golf with different people. We have also kept our main events to fall on Men’s Day Thursdays so
