And the answer is “yes.” Is this trip really necessary?

Is Lent s ll important?

Do we s ll need to abstain from meat on Friday during Lent?

Now, what about fas ng? That is one of those ques ons with a “depends” answer. It comes down to two things: first, are you 14 years or older, and/or do you have a medical condi on which would prevent you from being able to fast? In other words, for example, some people who are diabe c and should not fast. It’s just an example. I don’t know of anyone who is in the hospital who would just say to a nurse who brings their meal “no thanks. It’s Ash Wednesday and I’m fas ng.” And by the way, fas ng is only a requirement on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Abstaining from meat is on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays in Lent. Those are two of the most frequently confused prac ces.

Do I s ll need to “give up” something? Sacrifice is a big deal during Lent. When we were children, I think just about everyone stopped ea ng candy during Lent. Some adults I knew would not smoke or drink alcohol during Lent. Others, some of which are living in our modern world, have decided to give up being on Facebook or s ll others may not eat meat AT ALL for the 40 days. The idea is about discipline. There tends to be a nega ve connota on to the word discipline, but it really is about following a certain way of life or a certain set of rules. The point of our discipline is simple – to fill up our “areas of sacrifice” with taking me for our rela onship with God. It comes in trying to put ourselves in Jesus’ shoes – the one who will make the biggest sacrifice of all with His life for the salva on of man.

Now two other big ques ons are “when does Lent officially end? And do Sundays count as part of Lent? I’ve heard that Lent is over the Wednesday of Holy Week and that I don’t have to keep my promises or sacrifices on Sundays.” I like the answer from the USCCB website (usccb.org):

“It might be more accurate to say that there is the "forty day fast within Lent." Historically, Lent has varied from a week to three weeks to the present configura on of 46 days. The forty day fast, however, has been more stable. The Sundays of Lent are certainly part of the Time of Lent, but they are not prescribed days of fast and abs nence. Apart from the prescribed days of fast and abs nence on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, and the days of abs nence every Friday of Lent, Catholics have tradi onally chosen addi onal peniten al prac ces for the whole Time of Lent. These prac ces are disciplinary in nature and o en more effec ve if they are con nuous, i.e., kept on Sundays as well. That being said, such prac ces are not regulated by the Church, but by individual conscience.” (h p://www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/liturgical-year/lent/ques ons-and-answers-about-lent.cfm)

Peace. Hope this helps. Fr. Mike

1st FRIDAY EUCHARISTIC ADORATION is this Friday, March 3. “only in adoration can a profound and

genuine reception mature. And it is precisely this personal encounter with the Lord that then strengthens the social mission contained in the Eucharist, which seeks to break down not only the walls that separate the Lord and ourselves, but also and especially the walls that separate us from one another." - Pope Benedict XVI (Sacramentum Caritatis) Next 1st Friday Eucharistic Adoration is this Friday, March 3, from 9:15 AM-5:00 PM, ending with Benediction.

Lyn Gray has once again graciously offered to chair our St. Patrick’s Day Dinner. The dinner will

be on Saturday, March 18, starting immediately after the 5:00 PM Mass. Tickets will be on sale this weekend after all of the Masses and also at the Parish Office during normal hours. Also, we are looking for donations for the sweet table at the St. Patrick’s Day Dinner. If you would like to help with this or any other parts of this fun-filled event, please contact the Parish Office.

Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one‘s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. The special Paschal fast, as well as abstinence, are prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Attention!
About a year ago, Cardinal Cupich began speaking to the pastors of the Archdiocese regarding the Renew My Church initiative, a true opportunity for parishes to work
toward a common goal. Without knowingly doing so, back in February of 2016, St. Lawrence O’Toole took our own initiative to offer a 4 week course for training people to be Ministers of Care to the Sick. We had five parishes participate last year, and it’s time to do it again. Therefore, we will be offering training to be held on the four Tuesdays in March this year, March 7, March 14, March 21 & March 28. Since the Archdiocese asks that new ministers have no less than 12 hours of training, the sessions will be from 6:30 PM-9:30 PM on these evenings. There will be variety of presenters. So, if you want to be able to carry the Body of our Lord to the sick in their homes or to hospitals or nursing homes, please contact the Parish Office to register for these trainings, and mark these evenings in your calendar. Fr. Mike Novick
February 26, 2017- Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time:
Jesus tells us that our
heavenly Father knows all that we need, and so we need to let tomorrow take care of itself as today has troubles enough of its own. This month, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able assist many families by providing food. Thank You!
All interested readers are invited to join the next meeting of the O’Toole Book Club on March 21, at
4:00 PM, in the Parish Office. Our book for March is The Lemon Tree: An Arab, a Jew, and the Heart of the Middle East, by Sandy Tolan. The story takes place in 1967. It recounts multiple changes in Palestine and Israel, where both Jews and Arabs want to live on the same land. Two young people meet when one of them, a Palestinian, travels to the family home, abandoned nineteen years earlier. The other young person, an Israeli, lives in the home. Their relationship brings the Arab-Israeli conflict down to the human level. This is such a timely topic as the struggle for peace between these two groups continues. Mark your calendar! Read the book! Join us for a lively discussion!
Living Stewardship
February 26, 2017 8th Sunday in Ordinary Time “No one can serve two masters; for
either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon (material wealth).” MATTHEW 6:24 For many people, God and money run “neck and neck” as their first priority. Making money and spending money becomes the center of their life and they actually become a slave to money. The solution – become more generous. Giving money to Church and charity frees us from slavery to money and from making money a “god” before God. STEWARDSHIP PRAYER Prayer of St. Ignatius of Loyola
Take. Lord, and receive all my liberty, my memory, my understanding and my entire will, all I have and call my own. You have given all to me. To you, Lord, I return it.
Everything is yours; do with it what you will. Give me only your love and your grace; that is enough for me.
PLANNED GIVING Remember St. Lawrence O’Toole in your estate plans. St. Lawrence O’Toole has been blessed over the years to have received some generous gifts from parishioners and friends who have included our parish in their estate plans. If you would like to include SLOT in your plans, please
contact the Parish Office.
Reflecting on God’s Word I am writing this in the aftermath of the earthquake that shattered Haiti in January of 2010. The devastation was beyond words. Newspapers and telecasts were filled with pictures of the dead and heart-breaking stories. More than 220,000 were killed and thousands upon thousands were wounded. There is little food, water, or shelter, and few medical supplies. Yet even in the face of this tragic
event, an evening news program two nights after the earthquake had footage of a large group in Port au Prince lifting their voices and hands in prayer, praising God. This radical faith in God is what Jesus calls his disciples to have. The Father did not intervene to save his Son from death, but neither did he allow death to have the final word. He raised his Son from the dead. This saving death has remained the sign above all signs that God wills us to have eternal life. It can seem impossible at times not to worry about tomorrow. But Jesus assures us that the Father does not abandon us—ever! We are all called to be stewards of the mysteries of the faith that is centered in the person and saving death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We are to hand on what has been handed down to us: that Jesus is God’s only Son, who suffered and died and was raised for our salvation, and by our baptism we are brought into this mystery of living, dying, and rising in Christ.
Living God’s Word Today’s psalm response is a wonderful prayer of the heart to carry through the week: “Rest in God alone, my soul” (Psalm 62:6a). We can pray with the psalmist that we find our peace in God who is our rock and our salvation, our stronghold.
ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO The Cross of San Damiano ~~ St. Francis of Assisi prayed before the cross and head the Lord say to him “Renew My Church”
A Prayer for “Renew My Church”
Lord Jesus, you speak to us today, as you spoke to holy men and women who have gone before us. In every age and in our own time, you call to us and say: Renew My Church. Pour out the gift of your Holy Spirit upon us, and so enable us
May we remain in the holy company of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the apostles, and all the saints. May their example and presence inspire us with patient confidence in the work of your grace. We ask this of you who live and reign with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen
to hear you clearly to listen to each other attentively to imagine our future boldly to discern your direction wisely to persevere in your holy will courageously to stay together in charity to surrender our own plans readily to embrace the greater good to hand on your gifts to future generations.
