Jack Willis with a blockbuster brown trout he caught earlier this week.

Using minnows as bait, Jack Willis pulled this 16.66 brown trout up on Monday, February 23rd while ice fishing the Missouri River downstream from the Fort Peck power houses. Jack is having the big brown mounted at Morehouse Taxidermy. In a Billings Gazette story in

June of 2009 about big browns, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks fisheries biologist Dick Oswald stated, “These things have to be freaks. Those fish are exceptions in many ways.” To reach sizes such as this, Oswald explained that the big browns eat other fish while also

having “unique genetics” that allows them to focus on gobbling fish rather than slurping caddis and mayflies from the surface like an average brown that would likely reach a maximum length of 19.5 inches. The state’s record brown trout weighed 29 pounds and was caught in 1966 at Wade Lake by E.H. Peck Bacon.

The Missouri/Milk River Chapter will also be donating the auction proceeds, of the sale of an engraved Henry Silverado .22 LR, to the Northeast Montana Veterans Memorial Fund. being given away this evening. There are raffles, live and silent auction items and many items to be given away that were donated by our local merchants, which by the way, truly makes this banquet a local event. Last year’s banquet was a big success and they plan to make this year’s event an even larger success. For every $1 raised in Montana, over $3 comes back in the way of invested dollars into habitat conservation or restoration projects. Valley and Phillips counties are large recipients of these DU dollars!! Early Bird tickets are still available at D&G Sports and Western through Monday, March 2nd. After
