MOVIE MATINEE Saturday, Feb. 29, 2:00 p.m. - OPR

A rat named Remy dreams of becoming a great chef despite his family’s wishes and the obvious problem of being a rat in a decidedly rodent-phobic profession. When fate places Remy in the city of Paris, he finds himself ideally situated beneath a restaurant made famous by his culinary hero. Remy forms an unlikely partnership with the garbage boy, who inadvertently discovers Remy’s amazing talents. They strike a deal, ultimately setting into motion a hilarious and exciting chain of extraordinary events that turns the culinary world of Paris upside down. 2007 animated adventure. 110 mins. Rated G. The Village Church is able to show this movie because it is covered by their CVLI license, which also prohibits the advertisement of the movie’s title and actors’ names.

Jim became Vice President of Village Properties in 1991 and has held that position throughout the tremendous growth that we all see around us. Jim is a sixth generation Floridian. He and wife Jan have been married 40 years and are the proud parents of a son and daughter, both now married, who were raised in the Village, and one grandchild. Jim has handled the development, planning and construction for the Village as well as maintenance for all the facilities, and more recently has taken on additional responsibilities for independent living operations. Jim has a degree in architecture where God placed him at just the right time. Jim is not going to talk so much about the business of the Village but about his faith and ministry to this unique place that we have grown to love and serve. Come for a great buffet breakfast, fellowship, and be inspired of what God is doing among and through us.

Friday, March 6, 10:30 a.m. - DR

Women, men, and children in more than 170 countries and regions will celebrate World Day of Prayer, Friday, March 6, 2020. Join in the prayer service written by the women of Zimbabwe, who invite us to explore Jesus’ encounter with a person who, although positioned for healing, does not act upon the opportunities given (John 5:2–9). The theme is “Rise! Take Your Mat and Walk.” We will also learn about Zimbabwe’s history and rich cultural diversity. Following the program, there will be a lunch featuring Zimbabwean foods. Our World Day of Prayer service is sponsored by WH&FMS. It will be in the DR on March 6, at 10:30. Please make your reservation by March 3 at one of the church information desks or by calling Barbara Phipps at 688-2361.

Have you ever stepped in dog poop? I have, and it is really annoying. Sometimes, you don’t even realize you’ve done it until you’ve tracked it inside and left a trail of mess to clean up. If you’re lucky, you’ve only walked on wood or tile, which is easier to clean up, but when you rub it into carpeting or car upholstery — wow, that’s annoying! Please, please, please, if you have a dog, clean up after it. Don’t assume someone else will pick up after you or that the droppings were left in a place no one will walk through. It is your responsibility as a dog owner to pick up after your animal. No excuses. If you can’t bend over or kneel down to pick up the poop, you need to figure out how you’re going to clean up after your pet without straining yourself, or you need to stop walking your dog. Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock lately, you know the presidential election season is once again upon us. Many of you have probably already voted by mail in the presidential preference primary. Those of you who have not voted by mail should know that early voting will take place at the JKPL Saturday, March 7, through Saturday, March 14, 8:30 a.m. –4:30 p.m., and the general election will be Tuesday, March 17, 6:00 a.m.–7:30 p.m. also at the JKPL. (The library is the voting location for ACV’s precinct.) The sample ballot I received in the mail has several candidates listed that have already dropped out of the race. In fact, 50% of the Democratic candidates listed are no longer running. I’ve been looking online for a good website to suggest with unbiased (if that exists anymore) information on every candidate to help everyone learn more about who is running. So far, no luck. If you know of a good website to suggest, let me know, and I’ll put it in next

week’s FNN. Our local elections take place in August, so we will have a political forum before then to give you a chance to hear from our local candidates. Relevant voting numbers:

Voting Precinct 9

County District 3

School Board District 3

Circuit Judge—3rd Circuit Florida’s 2nd Congressional District

Speaking of voting and candidates, if you attended the Membership Association meeting on the 20th, you were blessed to hear the reading of ACV’s Political Campaigning Policy. In case you weren’t there (or you’d like to be reminded), here’s a synopsis:

ACV can’t show partiality toward any candidate because of its 501(c)(3) status. If you are in a position that could be seen as representing ACV, you cannot show partiality toward any candidate, either (while on the clock or actively volunteering).

On your own time, you may back any candidate you wish by word of mouth, clothing, bumper stickers, etc. You may not, however, put up campaign signs in your on-campus yard or display them to the public anywhere on campus.

ACV has a “no solicitation” policy, meaning no politician or their representative may campaign on campus in any public way. The two exceptions are that candidates may participate in ACV-organized political forums, and candidates may rent vendor space during Market Days at the VS.

ACV members may host a candidate in their home or by renting an ACV meeting space for private campaigning.

If you desire to read the full political campaigning policy, it is available from Member Services. ACV’s employees and the membership should refer questions pertaining to political campaigning at ACV to me (James Sutter).

Member Services Tip of the Week

Did you know ACV’s administration wants to hear your suggestions, criticisms and praise? The Membership Association has a Resident Suggestion Form that is available at Member Services and at every Membership Association meeting. Once you fill out one of these forms, it is read by the Membership Association Executive Committee, responded to by one member, and then forwarded on to ACV administration for review. Depending on what is submitted, you may hear back immediately, or it may take a little while. Feel free to check with the Association Executive Committee on the status of your suggestion form. The purpose of the Association is to act as a communication conduit between ACV’s members and administration, so take advantage of this membership benefit and let your voice be heard.

The SECURE Act

How does the SECURE Act affect your retirement plans?

The SECURE Act (Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement Act) was signed into law on Dec. 20, 2019, and became effective Jan. 1, 2020. This legislation includes several provisions relating to both personal and corporate retirement plans. First, the age at which required minimum distributions (RMDS) from retirement plans must begin is pushed back from 70½ years to 72 years. Secondly, an individual that has earned income from working can contribute to an IRA (Individual Retirement Plan) regardless of age. Previously, you could not contribute to an IRA once you reached 70½ years old. Thirdly, the rules for the qualified charitable distributions from IRAs remain the same. Donors who are at least 70½ may make a donation up to $100,000 to a public charity from their IRA, without including the distribution in their federal taxable income. This distribution can be made in lieu of the annual required minimum distribution. The qualified charitable

distribution remains an excellent way to make charitable donations. If you have any questions concerning the above or other provisions of the SECURE Act, contact your financial professional or Jim Davis, Director of Legacy Giving, at 658-5110 or [email protected].

VOLUNTEER SERVICES Eleanore Catarious–386-658-5251

Have you asked yourself how you can spend your retirement time in a meaningful way? To start with, put yourself first. It begins with the notion of sacrifice, but a big incentive for many people is what they get from the work, and that is what keeps them coming back, whether it’s friendships with fellow volunteers or pats on the back. Importantly, seek out work where you might benefit. Quite possibly there are more immediate aspects that appeal to you being part of a group or a team, giving yourself a reason to get up in the morning, or a place to go, or a schedule to live by. The relationship and a sense of purpose are just as important as some of the more lofty ideals in getting a satisfying experience. Learning opportunities are a good example of this. The work is frequently its own reward.

The Secret of Volunteering

The more you give, the more you get, the more you laugh, the less you fret.

The more you do unselfishly, the more you live abundantly.

The more of everything you share, the more you will always have to spare.

The more you love, the more you will find

that life is good and friends are kind. For only what you give away

enriches you from day to day. —Anonymous

I LOVE chocolate so when I saw this quiz, I tried it, and it really WORKS! And it’s kind of cool. Please don’t read the bottom until you have worked it out.

1) From 1 to 9, pick the number of times each week you would like to have chocolate. ( I picked 9.)

2) Multiply this number by 2. 3) Add 5. 4) Multiply it by 50. 5) If you have already had your birthday this year,

add 1750; if not, add 1749. 6) Subtract the four-digit year that you were born.

You should now have a three-digit number: The first digit is your original number (or, how many times you want to have chocolate each week), the remaining two digits are your age. BINGO, it worked for me. AMAZING! The charity that is a trifle to us can be precious to others. —Homer, Greek poet

THE RUSTIC SHOP Myra Webb, Reporter

The Rustic Shop has some very special items on display that are very old. We have two huge 27” antique, hand-

painted Dresden Porcelain figurine German table lamps with brass base we are selling for $40.00 each. We also can negotiate price. We have very aged lace shades. When I say “aged”, I mean old. You may have your own idea about leaving shades on. One lamp is on eBay selling for $114.00 plus shipping and handling. We also have Holy Bible bookends with praying hands, an old-fashioned telephone with push buttons (This is a conversation piece. This phone works even with electricity off. Our cordless goes dead.), a heavy vintage stand to display small items on, and a silver platter with marble center placement (The mark on back platter is Leonard Silver.) All of the above makes up what we call “The Vintage Center” and will be grouped together.

THE VILLAGE VOICES Nancy Seale, Reporter

I am hoping that you are realizing that the topic “Celebrations” for the 2020 edition of Village Voices is one that begs to be shared. As I read the column from last week upon my return to Dowling Park from NC, I was overwhelmed by the fact that Shirley had shared thoughts concerning outward and inward celebrations that had been stirring in my own brain. As I made the solo drive from Florida to NC, I had plenty of time to contemplate and reminisce all the while enjoying the gradual change in scenery, elevation and temperature. Basically, the thoughts that Shirley shared were thoughts that were swirling in my mind during the lengthy drive. You see, while in the mountains of western NC, I shared in a granddaughter’s 4th birthday celebration. I was able to celebrate with her on the actual date of her birth by indulging in her most favorite food, deviled eggs, in her most favorite restaurant. Then again a few days later, I was in attendance for her party, where deviled eggs were once again part of the celebration. Now those celebrations were “major” events shared by many. Several days later, this Florida girl celebrated quietly within my soul as the snow began to fall and fall and fall. I always find myself in a celebratory and contemplative mood as I witness the majestic mountains slowly becoming draped in a blanket of white. The surreal quietness that descended upon the land as the six-sided flakes fall is reason for me to celebrate the beauty, design and order of God’s creation. To jumpstart your thinking in regards to celebrations you have experienced, on a piece of paper write the heading “Celebrations”. Then go on with your usual routine. For me, I find myself thinking about that paper that is awaiting my input. As something comes to

mind, I return to jot it down. I repeat this process until I am satisfied with the results. It may take several days for me to complete. Don’t be in a hurry with this part of the process. It may take time. I hope this simple idea will be of help to y’all. Often I find that my thoughts are not as scattered when I put them on paper. And then … sometimes they still are. However, that is a column for another day! By the way, don’t forget to celebrate Feb. 29. There won’t be another until 2024. We are wanting for you to share in this celebratory issue of Village Voices. Keep thinking!

NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS

BUTTERFIELD ACRES James Sutter, Reporter

Happy birthday to both Gloria Dinsmore and Barbara Mercurio on March 1! May the coming year be filled with joy and blessings for you both. I’ve received a report that Gene Peters’s surgery went very well. Praise the Lord. A big “Welcome to the neighborhood!” to Thomas, Jennifer, AJ and Beckom Powers, who moved in across 102nd Trace from Dick and Nancy Beggs the beginning of January. Thomas’s birthday was last month, so happy belated birthday, Thomas! Have you heard about the new restaurant, Karma? There’s no menu; you get what you deserve.

CARTER HOUSE Connie Wood, Reporter

Here it is the last few days of February, and March will soon be here. I cannot believe it has been a year since I moved here March 1, and all I can say is the older you get, the faster time goes. I should have listened to my dad. He always spoke the truth and true it is. For all those that have birthdays at the end of February, happy birthday and many more. Louise Grant had her daughter, Rita, visiting this week, and it was so nice meeting her and having a nice chat. Marty Lewis also had family visiting with her from south Florida, I believe. Keep prayers going for Wanda Myers and Herb who are recuperating from the bad car accident they had a few weeks ago. Also, pray for all those in hospitals, and also people who work here doing this and that. They could all use our prayers and thanks for all they do. We are now in need of a volunteer to take on washing our large coffee pot and setting up the coffee for the next day. Kathy has been doing that chore for us but has to give that chore up; now we need a new person to take that on, or alas, no more coffee in the community room at CH. We want to thank Kathy for doing that for us all this time, so, thank you, and may God bless you. Anyone who would like to volunteer, please see Marty Lewis or Joan Downie, and thank you so much for taking that on. I wish everyone a very nice last week of February. Don’t forget to take time to stop and smell the roses. Well, flowers or trees or whatever.

Greetings from DM. Suwanee Pickers entertain us Fridays at 10:00 a.m. Many visitors enjoy coming to hear them play and sing. All are welcome. This afternoon, we will have a hot chocolate social for residents of DM. At lunch last Saturday, we had birthday cake with Gail Lanier to celebrate her special day. Saturday evening, her daughter, Janice, and son-in-law, Kenneth, took her out for her birthday dinner. Sunday church services are encouraged. Some leave DM and go to other churches of their choice. The VC service is broadcast on TV2; and GSC now has a chaplain, Bruce Arnold, bringing the GSC church service. Robert Yelms, son of Charlotte Steele, came for a visit with Charlotte and George on Feb. 17. They were here for a week. On the 19th, Chuck Eckel made visits

to Elvena Johnson and Debbie Hudson. Lynn Eubanks visited Gail Lanier on Feb. 18, and Judy Formin visited Annie Daniels. That brings me to welcome Annie as a new resident. She actually arrived during our quarantine. We welcome you, Annie, and appreciate how you have recognized your longtime friends and made new ones. On the 20th, Vic and Debbie Perry, Joy Ashworth and Caleb, Tom and Faith Howe visited Isabel Slover. Also on the 20th, friends Frank and Donna Walker visited George and Charlotte Steele. On the 22nd, Paul and Cindy Wiggins visited Elvena Johnson. On Feb. 23, Janice Chapman had a visit from her grandson, Kevin, who watched the VC service on TV2 with her. After lunch, she was very pleased with a visit from six of her seven great-grandchildren. They were as happy to see me as I was to see them. We had a great time together. Their parents, Stephen and Andrew and Kelly Chapman, and grandparents D’Arcy and Robbin Chapman made up the group. Another welcome is for Sarah Koon who is here for respite while her caregiving family makes a trip to Disney World and back. Until next week, God bless you.

DOWLING HOUSE Janice Harris, Reporter

Celeste Cook has been blessed with visits from family the last two weeks. Last week, on Wednesday, her sister Sybil Gillette and her husband from Jacksonsville visited. I was able to meet Sybil as Celeste and Sybil were walking near the VC. On Sunday, Feb. 16, Celeste Cook’s son Aaron-

Dax Cook, and his daughter, Ayslin Marie, came to bring Celeste a new cellphone. Aaron had taken Celeste’s old, non-functioning phone to Verizon to find out the problem. Verizon took the old phone and gave her a new phone. They had lunch at the RDR with lots of fun and laughter.

WOW, we have a neighbor who has given the term “spring cleaning” a whole new meaning! The folks living at 10436 CR 136 took a backhoe to their house instead of a vacuum cleaner and knocked the entire house down! I suppose a frontend loader is next. Well, someone is reading my reports, and that someone is Ernest Perry who lives at 10494 CR 136. He called yesterday to advise me that this Thursday, Feb. 27, will be his 91st birthday. I hope I look as chipper and active as he does if I make it to 91! Congratulations, Ernest. I bet you didn’t know that this week on the 22nd was George Washington’s and Drew Barrymore’s birthdays, and also George Harrison who was born on Feb. 25, 1943. So, anybody out there who has not called to give me your information, I sure would appreciate hearing from you all. We are planning our Spring Pot Luck dinner for DMA/DPN for Tuesday, March 17, at 6:00 p.m. at the Harmony Center. Yes, that is Saint Patrick’s Day, and that will be our theme for the party. We will provide the southern fried chicken and are asking our neighbor members to bring a covered dish and/or dessert to share. So, break out your green, and come and have a good time with good food and good fellowship. We are asking that you RSVP so we will know how much chicken to fry! You can call me at 658-2113, and please leave a message if no one answers. Just a reminder to all our veterans: ACV will be providing bus transportation to Steinhatchee, FL, in cooperation with “Hooked on Heroes”. The entire day will be of no charge to our vets; everything will be covered, from the transportation, to the food, to the fishing off shore and return home to ACV. I find a lot of truth in the following: God doesn’t call the qualified; He qualifies the called. When you get to your wits end, you’ll find that God lives there! We are called to be witnesses, not lawyers or judges. From the middle of a dusty, bumpy dead end road, 102nd Place, peace starts with a smile; happiness is contagious; and remember, forbidden fruits create many jams. Never forget who is in charge. Isaiah 40:28–31.

My goodness, here we are at the end of another month. Since Dr. Joyce and I moved here, time has flown by. Perhaps it’s something in the water. Speaking of the end of the month, please join us, the residents of ET, as we gather at 9:00 a.m. at the Village Café on Saturday, Feb. 29. Some of us have coffee, some have a full breakfast. Order what you want from the menu, or not. We’re looking forward to seeing you. Bill Storey writes, “The ET Singles Fellowship Club will meet Feb. 29 at 6:30 p.m. at 11088 Dowling Park Dr. in Taylor Commons. This is not a dinner meeting, but one to discuss legal documents for singles. The location is Bill’s home, and you can enter from the front or back. You don’t have to bring anything but an open mind. See you there.” Saturday, March 28 — keep this date open — is ET’s Spring Fling. Soup is already accounted for, so the rest of us will bring salad, sandwiches, or something sweet. Essentially, this meal is potluck except for the soup and beverages. Be there at noon. Any questions? Call Verna Piper Simpson at 658-3753. Last week, we said good-bye to our neighbors Barbara and Richard Gellasch. They moved to Live Oak. We wish them much success in their new home. Lastly, a note from me: Thank you for all the birthday cards I received. Some were funny, some were sweet, some were mushy, some were darling, but all were appreciated. Oh, and thanks for the cheesecake with cherries on top, too. I’ll be right here next week.

ALCOHOL/DRUG PROBLEM? (305) 407-0895 24 HRS

THE CENSUS COUNTS The 2020 Census is coming soon. In mid-March, homes across the country will begin receiving invitations to complete the 2020 Census. Will you and your community count? Or will you be missing?

If we are in the streets, and on the news, and even in the polling booth, but not in the Census, we will find the things that we need are still missing. This is the time to get involved. The Census counts. So do you. If our community isn’t fully counted in the 2020 Census, we will miss out on political representation, on money for our (grand)children’s classrooms, on jobs, and health care centers for the next 10 years. The census is required by the U.S. Constitution once every 10 years to make sure that political power is fairly allocated among the states — and within states at the local level. If states and communities are not fully counted, that could cost them a lot of political influence and power as well as money and other resources. Our state could lose a member of Congress, or our city could give up representation in the state legislature to a community that was fully counted. Giving up political power could mean losing out on access to all kinds of resources — without a chance to fix the problem for 10 years. Information collected in the census influences the way public officials distribute more than $800 billion in federal funds every year for services like schools, fire departments, hospitals, and community health centers. In 2016, community health centers served more than 25 million patients in urban and rural locations. Community health centers are often the only source of care available to low-income patients, and are playing an increasingly important role in providing treatment for people caught up in the opioid epidemic. If our community isn’t fully counted, its needs won’t be represented in census figures, and it could miss out when officials decide where health clinics should be located and how much funding they will get. Company executives use census data to identify communities where they might build a factory or office building, or open new stores. Census numbers also guide the distribution of billions of dollars in community development block grants. If our community is not fully counted in the 2020 Census, it will miss out on investments that bring jobs to neighborhoods that need and deserve them. State and federal decision makers rely on census data to figure out where new schools are needed and where hundreds of billions of dollars in federal and state spending will go to help pay for teachers, textbooks, and other educational expenses. Census data influences the distribution of billions of dollars — almost $16 billion for Title I grants that help local educational agencies serve more than 24 million students in low-income families and communities, more than $12 billion for special education grants to states, along with funds for the national school lunch program, Head Start, and grants for improving teacher quality.

If our community is not fully counted in the 2020 Census, our (grand)children could miss out on the educational resources they need and deserve. Once your invitation arrives, you should respond for your home in one of three ways: online, by phone, or by mail. If you would like to respond online, but don’t have an email, you may use the Village computer lab in the Schoolhouse Room. April 1 is Census Day, a key reference date for the 2020 Census. When completing the census, you will include everyone living in your home on April 1, 2020. Census Day will be celebrated with events across the country. For more information, visit 2020census.gov.
