Greetings from the WHL

A Welcome from the President

Welcome back to another exciting year of Kootenay ICE Hockey. With the way the Hockey Club finished last year the 2013-2014 season has the potential to be very special. Mirrored in last place at Christmas, the Club posted the fifth best record in the WHL in the second half of the season and made the playoffs for a 15th straight year, while finishing with a .500 or better record for a 14th consecutive season (which are both the longest active streaks in the WHL).

Our organization has been very fortunate since moving to Cranbrook to enjoy an unparalleled amount of on ice success. This year for the first time in franchise history one of our players has the potential to be the first overall selection in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. With that comes added pressure to perform, but with reigning WHL Coach of the Year, Ryan McGill leading our team, Sam Reinhart and the rest of the players will receive the necessary guidance and leadership in achieving all of their goals.

With the invaluable experience our team gained last season, we expect our returning players along with our new prospects to once again battle for contention in the very competitive Eastern Conference. Our expectations of success both on and off the ice will not change. Our fans have come to expect a team that is hard working on the ice and ambassadors for Cranbrook and the entire East Kootenay region off the ice.

On behalf of the entire organization, welcome back and I hope you enjoy the game.

Jeff Chynoweth, President & Governor

TONIGHT’S OPPONENTVS. Ice: It’s the season finale between the Hurricanes and Ice tonight. It’s been a back and forth series and a relatively close one with 3 of the first 4 games being decided by just one goal. Kootenay won the first two games, (4-3/SO, 5-2), followed by the Hurricanes winning the next two meetings by identical 5-4 scores (one in a shootout, one in regulation). In the first game of this home and home series last night in Lethbridge, the Ice dominated the Hurricanes 8-1 extending their win streak to 4 games, while the Canes have dropped 2 straight. The Hurricanes PP in the series is 6/17 while the Ice man advantage is 6/25. Riley Sheen has 7 points (3G, 4A) against the Kootenay Ice this season while Jaedon Descheneau has 12 points (1G, 11A) for the Ice.

Last Game: vs. Ice, 8-1 Loss: Luke Philp scored just 5 ½ minutes into the game for a 1-0 Kootenay Ice lead. Later in the period, Kootenay made it 2-0 when Jaedon Descheneau scored his team leading 35th of the year. The Ice were far from done as they would add three more goals before the first period was over. Just over a minute later, Kootenay scored on the PP as Sam Reinhart made it a 3-0 lead. The Hurricanes would cut into that lead right off the faceoff when Riley Sheen had a clear breakaway and he put his 13th of the season behind Mackenzie Skapski making it a 3-1 game. Kootenay’s 3 goal lead was restored just over a min-ute and a half later when Tim Bozon’s one timer beat Jonny Hogue and it was 4-1. Before the period was done, Philp buried his second of the night for a commanding 5-1 lead after 20 minutes. Shots on goal favored the Ice 17-11. Lethbridge made a change in goal to start the second period as Teagan Sacher made his return to action since getting injured at Medicine Hat on December 28th. On the second shot in the game he faced, Bozon scored just 1:42 into the middle frame and it was 6-1. Sacher was solid the rest of the period stopping 18 of 19 shots he faced as the Ice took their commanding 6-1 lead into the second intermission. In the third, Kootenay struck again and it was Bozon getting his hat trick at the 11 minute mark. It was 7-1 Ice at that point and before the final buzzer sounded, Zach Franko got in on the scoring making it an 8-1 final. Hogue stopped 12 of 17 shots, while Sacher stopped 23 of 26 in his return. Division Comparison: vs. East: 6-9-1-1 vs. Central: 5-16-1-2 vs. BC: 0-10-0-0 vs. US: 0-5-0-0 Special Teams:After 56 games, the PP is ranked 17th at 19.4% while the PK is ranked 21st at 72.5% efficiency.
