golden gate chapter president’s message nikola kravik, february 2018

Dear Colleagues,

Although this is the February Fog newsletter, we can’t forget our most successful ASHRAE Winter 2018 Expo on record few weeks ago in Chicago! What a venue it was, full of people and excitement — hope you had a chance to see it live!

It was my first time too. No excuses, but it has always been “we are too busy therefore we can’t go”. It will indeed change your view of the engineering industry you are part of. You will meet people that write the ASHRAE journal articles. You will meet ASHRAE Fellows and dignitaries as well as the folks that manufacture and service the equipment you specify. Maybe you will meet the engineer working on the M/P for the newest and largest airport in the world, the Istanbul New Airport. You will be able to put faces to many of those emails you’ve written. Maybe you can learn that “moi” means “hi” in Finnish. You will cheer and have fun with your network, both consisting of existing and new friends. In Chicago you will eat steaks and deep dish pizza’s — just kidding there is plenty of other good places for a meeting and delicious food and drinks.

You will represent your company and your society, not just yourself as an individual! You will learn a lot, you will have a blast. Try it at least once, it changed my view of what an Expo may look like. Our GG Chapter will try to secure funds to send more students and local engineers to the future Expo’s. 2019 ASHRAE Winter conference will be in Atlanta, Georgia, January 12–16, 2019. Book your calendars now.

We had great feedback for Mr. Steve Taylor’s SF Moma presentation last month, we will post a power point pdf on our website for those that missed it.

We are looking for strong ideas on how do fundraisers. I’m tired of San Diego having always more, plus Borannie our RP Chair can use some help so please contact us if interested.

Our February meeting is joint meeting with the ASPE-SF “The Future of BIM from a Design Build Perspective”. Our GG President Elect and events Chair, Michelle Dionello has been working hard with Lindy Gibbons, VP Technical at ASPE-SF and many others to make this happen. We hope for more partnership with ASPE-SF and future joint meetings. Check ASPE-SF web below, I saw some familiar faces, few existing colleagues and friends of mine and potential new ones!http://ggashrae.org/meetinginfo.php?id=104&ts=1514327992 https://www.aspesf.org/leadership

To remind ourselves and our goals from few years ago 2020 is approaching quickly and 2030 is not too far away. No one is prepared, everyone is talking, what is your company doing to prepare for what’s coming to us water and energy wise?http://www.cpuc.ca.gov/ZNE/

See you all on Feb 15th at PGE, PEC!

January 2018! Variable-speed!...just think where we have been!Tom Gilbertson, Chapter HistorianToday we take Variable Speed Drives (VFD)…for granted…It is so easy to use VFD’s and they are so inexpensive…and perhaps most of all they are major “energy savers”!....But…think where we came from!…just a few…well…over the past 60 years ago….and all of the grief that we endured to obtaining adjustable rpm on our fans, pumps and compressor applications…and how efficient the new approach really is!

Well, what did we do?...just to get the “variable speed”…but also to be able to control the speed.

PG&E used to distribute…in the street…in many downtown locations…DC Power… primarily for use on elevators. DC, with a rheostat…and a DC motor is pretty easy to use. We used to see this when the elevators had “operators” in the cab…who actually could and did control the

speed. Of the car…There were a few job around San Francisco that DC fans…but that was pretty expensive to use…and those fans, and the PG&E-DC-supplied-elevators were phased out…(no pun intended)…and that DC could be pretty dangerous….so the DC approach with a rheostat, pretty much went away.

In Louisiana natural gas was very inexpensive…not so with electricity…so designer’s thought process was “rationalized” to use steam boilers…and use steam turbines to drive even small pumps and fans…nominally in the 20 to 50 hp range. The “selling point” was that steam turbine was easy to operate over a variable rpm range….plus you were able to feel like a “real engineer” and use steam!...never mind that this approach required lots of maintenance!...varying the turbine speed was pretty easy…and could be made to respond to a pneumatic signal.

Then there was always that American Standard “Gyrol-drive”…closely related to what Desoto produced in 1941…and was the forerunner of the fully automatic automotive transmissions….BUT...that American Standard “Gyro –drive” was a dandy way to obtain variable speed on a large fan…or pump. No starting shock, either!...it cost a small fortune…but it was variable-speed!

Occasionally some enterprising engineer would apply a “Reeves Drive” and have a manually-adjustable variable speed operation…that usually lasted about 2-years….before wearing itself out …mechanically.

Eaton came out with a really neat variable speed system that was an “adjustable-pitch diameter” system that worked perfectly …generally for about 18 months….

Just be thankful that electronic, solid-state VFD’s are so low priced that we no longer have to hardly even think about applying them to our projects; they are the lowest cost way to control an integral hp motor….and they come with options, control sequences, as well as very complicated interfaces…that are all figured out for the designer. We can concentrate on the benefits of “variable-speed” equipment…and no longer have to be concerned about someone checking oil-level in the Gyrol-drive…or how to adjust the speed of a steam turbine…and maintain the oil in that gear box!

Those “good old days” with mechanical variable speed drives are not really missed.

If we were to compare what was common to our designs…50 years ago….• 5 watts per sq ft for lighting loads• Constant-speed fans, pumps and refrigeration compressors• Exterior walls…frequently un-insulated and U-Values at 0.4• Single-glazed windows using non-Low-E glass…with U-values at 1.1• Ventilation rates fixed at 50 cfm of OSA per person

…and take a quick review of what we can do today..• 0.4 watts per sq ft for lighting loads…(or less) • Variable speed fans, pumps and refrigeration compressors• Exterior walls using ICF with U-V as low as 0.03• Double glazed-Argo-filled, Low E glass with thermal breaks U values at 0.28• Ventilation rates at 15 cfm of OSA per person…and CO2-controlled

Why shouldn’t we have much more efficient building to operate?...Look what you have to work with!
