Reader's Workshop:Over the next few weeks, our focus in reading groups will be on the different components of a story that make it easier for us to retell a story. Some of the lessons include: 1-Recognizing the main character of a story. 2- Recognizing supporting characters of a story. 3- Using character’s names when retelling a story…not “he” , “she”, or “they”. 4- Important events that happened in the story. 5- Retelling the important events in the same order they happened in the story. The children will practice retelling stories from their books they read to you each night. Please make sure that they read each night so that they are prepared to participate in reading group.
Learning sight words is a crucial part of learning to read. The more they know, the more fluent their reading is and it builds confidence. It is important that you continue to work on the sight words that your child has already been tested on. They will forget them if they are not practicing. The easiest way to practice is to write the words on index cards and just flash them every day. It takes 2 minutes! I used to play this simple game with my children when they were learning their sight words. If the child gets the word correct then they get to keep the card. If they don’t, then you get to keep it and see who has the most at the end. I play it in class and the children get so excited when they beat me!! Just add the new words that are written in their agenda every week.
Writer's Workshop:We will focus on enhancing our small moment stories. Writers will spell words by using the room as a resource with emphasis on the word wall. The words they may not know how to spell, they will spell by stretching out and writing down the letters that match the sounds. Writers will plan their sentence, write it out and reread it to make corrections. Once their stories are completed, they will share them with a partner.
Math Workshop:Students will continue to count and write numbers 1-50. They also are counting by 10’s to 100. Please practice counting by ones and tens, aloud, at home. The children have been working on the difference between 2D and 3D shapes. With the start of the second half of the school year, the students will be taking a Mid-year math assessment beginning next week.
Kindergarten News
Reader's Workshop:We will be focusing on comprehension and moving from oral to written retellings. We will learn how to identify the important parts of stories, identify the character's feelings, visualize what is happening, make predictions, and make connections to the books we are reading. Students should be moving away from just reading or calling words in their books. As readers, we should learn to connect with what is going on in our stories and get a real sense of what is taking place. Please continue to make reading a top priority each night with your little one. It is amazing how far they will be able to continue to grow as readers if you keep up this habit.
Writer's Workshop:I am sure your little one has come home talking about a collection of objects they need to bring into class. Students are using their collection to sort the objects by many different attributes. We are learning to use adjectives to describe our objects. This will help students to become aware of adding colorful words to their writing pieces. This month we will also move into opinion writing. We will learn to give reasons why we support an idea and be able to put these thoughts onto paper.
Phonics:This month our focus is mainly on reading silent e words and learning how to decode multi-syllable words.
Math Workshop:We are beginning a unit on measurement. Students will learn to read and interpret graphs and charts, how to tell time to the hour and half hour, and how to use standard and non-standard units of measurement. I am in the process of completing mid-year math assessments. I will send results as soon as these are completed.
Social Studies:Our focus will be on making and reading timelines.
