Commodore’s CornerNYC Racing SeasonThe 2018 Nawiliwili Yacht Club racing season starts off with Opening Day Races at 10 am on Saturday, February 10th. I know a lot of skippers and crew are ready to get back into the highly competitive racing that goes out on the race course. We welcome the new Race Committee Chair David Masters as he gets ready to provide only the best starts and finishes from the mole, assisted by team members Rhan Honjo and Vice Commodore Bill Georgi. After the race there will be a Picnic on the Lawn with BBQed specialities and KSA Topper rides. Invite your friends as guests are welcome!2018 Membership RenewalPlease renew your club membership as you are past due since February 1st! Go to the NYC website to complete the renewal process. Mahalo!2018 Kaua`i Channel RaceKāne`ohe Yacht Club is looking forward to co-sponsoring the 2018 Kaua`i Channel Race. The race will start off of Kāne`ohe at 7 am on Friday, August 3rd. We need NYC volunteers for welcoming the racers on the 3rd and assisting with the awards banquet and ceremony on Saturday, August 4th. Please join the KCR Planning Committee meetings on the first Monday of each month at the Clubhouse.2018 Silent AuctionRear Commodore David Masters is enthusiastic to be the new Chairperson of the Silent Auction and is anything but silent in sharing his enthusiasm by reaching out to get donations for the event. Let’s help him in his endeavor!Lease UpdateI’m excited to say that KSA and NYC have agreed on a draft of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), and it has been submitted to our lawyer for review. This is the first milestone in our journey to obtain a long-term lease.Hawai`i LifeFlightIn 2017 NYC members had an opportunity for a group discount and many members took advantage of that deal brought forth by then Fleet Captain Shaun Lehman. Thanks

Shaun! However, because of a corporate merger with another company, HLF no longer offers groups discounts, but they now offer an expanded area of service. If you’re interested in their insurance coverage, go to their website http://hawaiilifeflight.com/. They will honor NYC member’s coverage if they signed up for multiple year membership during the open enrollment period last year.

Racing NewsRacing Rules SeminarA two day seminar with Tom Pochereva covering the 2017-2020 US Sailing Rules will be on April 14th & 15th from 8 am to 4 pm. The $15 fee includes a working lunch for both days. More details to follow, but start now on getting your crewmates and skippers to put that date on their calendar. We need a commitment from enough people to pay for Tom’s travel expenses to make this work. If interested, contact Commodore Kevin Arndt at [email protected], or Rear Commodore David Masters at [email protected].

Quiz 95 Boats SW and SL are sailing downwind on starboard tack with SW overlapped to windward of SL. Just ahead is Boat X which has just been righted after capsizing. X is on port tack and the sailors are climbing back on board. SL bears away to pass by the bow of X as does SW. There is not enough space for SW to pass between SL and X, and SW’s boom hits SL’s starboard shroud (no damage or injury). Both boats protest. You are on the protest committee; how would you decide this?

Page 4: February Calendar March Calendar - Nawiliwili Yacht Clubnawiliwiliyachtclub.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/2018FebNewsle… · March Newsletter. Please be on time. Mahalo, Liz. 21

Answer ~Boat SL is penalized for breaking rule 19.2(b), Giving Room at an Obstruction. Because X has not regained control after capsizing, both SL and SW are required to avoid her (see rule 23, Capsized, Anchored or Aground; Rescuing). Therefore X ranks as an obstruction to both of them (see the definition Obstruction). Because SW is overlapped with SL, and SL is passing the obstruction to starboard, SW is entitled to room from SL to pass the obstruction on the same side (see rule 19.2(b)). SL fails to provide that room and breaks 19.2(b). SW breaks rule 11, On the Same Tack, Overlapped, but is exonerated under rule 21, Exoneration, because she is sailing within the room she is entitled to. Regarding rule 14, Avoiding Contact, clearly SL breaks it by not bearing away far enough to provide room for SW to pass between her and X without hitting either. SW need not act to avoid contact until it is clear that SL is failing to provide room. At that point it is likely that it is not reasonably possible for SW to avoid hitting SL, so SW does not break rule 14. However, even if one of them broke rule 14, she would be exonerated (not penalized) for breaking that rule because the contact did not cause damage or injury, SL as the right-of-way boat and SW as the boat entitled to room (see rule 14(b). Note: The fact that SL is required to give room to SW under rule 19.2(b) does not change the fact that SL is the right-of-way boat under rule 11, On the Same Tack, Overlapped (see the preamble to Part 2, Section A, Right of Way).Answers to Dave Perry’s 100 Best Racing Rules Quizzes are based on The Racing Rules of Sailing for 2013-2016. For a comprehensive explanation of the rules, read Dave Perry’s Understanding the Racing Rules of Sailing through 2016, which is available from US Sailing: 1 (800) 877-2451 or www.ussailing.org.
