Petals By Grace Turgeon

One cold February night, Bailey the goat was in the shed giving birth to a beautiful

goat . The snow had just stopped falling as she came into the world. Her mom cleaned her

and fed her. They soon fell asleep. The next morning when she woke up, everybody on the

farm was in the goat barn. “ What is going on?” she asked. “Well, we need to name you!” said

her dad named Patches. Then the barn filled with voices. “I like Gertrude!” shouted some-

one. “I like Cecilia,” yelled another. Just then the farmer came out. “Uh Oh!” whispered

Missy the horse. The chickens, dog, horse, and cat were supposed to be in their own cages.

“Run!” whispered Missy. Then the barn cleared out. When the farmer went back inside, she

stumbled out into the snow. After trudging through the snow for a good five minutes, she

stumbled upon something.

It was a big green stick with a yellow circle on top and little white things surrounding

it. The white things looked very yummy. It made her hungry. She just wanted to try one.

So she did, but it was too good to just try one. So she ate another and another. She was

just finishing up the last one when she heard a voice shout from behind her. “You just ate

the last flower till Spring!” It was Bailey. She sounded angry, but when she turned around

she had a big smile on her face. “That is what I‟ll name you: Petals,” Bailey said as Petals

slurped up the last petal. “Not Gertrude, not Cecilia, but Petals.” And a curious Petals in-

deed.

Chapter 3

There wasn‟t

enough snow for a

snow day, so I went

to school. I wasn‟t

upset about that be-

cause I got to see my

best friend, Caitlyn,

and tell her every-

thing, but I was not

expecting her reac-

tion. What I was ex-

pecting was “Whoa!

You‟re crazy!” or

“Seriously! Not fair!

Can‟t I be the

freak?” That‟s her

personality: hyper

and weird.

What I got

was “Oh, good you‟ve

finally made the

transition.”

“What?! You

knew about this?

Why didn‟t you tell

me?! How could you

know?” I babbled on

and on.

“How could

you know? I didn‟t

know „til yesterday!

What‟s happening?!

Omigod! What is hap-

pening? I don‟t even

know my best friend

anymore! My best

friend who DOESN‟T

LIE just lied to me! I

don‟t get it—I am so

mad! AHHHH! I am

so confused! Are you

even my best friend?

Is it your job or

something to lie to

me? Have you been

faking since pre-

school????” I gasped

at the thought then

continued.

“Caitlyn, you

didn‟t right? You

couldn‟t have…” I

looked at her afraid

of the answer.

“NO! No, of

course not. You‟re my

best friend, really

and truly. I just had

to hide some

things…”

“Some super

huge things!” I inter-

rupted her.

“I‟m sorry,”

she continued, “I

couldn‟t tell you, you

couldn‟t know! You‟d

be in danger before

you could even walk!

You wouldn‟t be able

to Change or Turn or

Be anything yet to

defend yourself and

there is a difference

between lying and

not telling.” She fin-

ished and crossed

her arms.

I couldn‟t stay

mad at her for long,

but I would hold this

over her head when I

needed a favor.

“Okay, I for-

give you,” I said.

A big grin

spread across her

face.

“So… what can

you do this month?”

she asked.

“What do you

mean?”I asked, con-

fused.

“Well,” she

said, “yesterday was

the 31st of January,

right? Well, today is

the 1st of February.

What could you do

yesterday?”

“I could

change into animals.

Why?”

“Ohhhhh… I

thought you might. I

heard that‟s what

your dad did his first

time-” she stopped

abruptly as if she

wasn‟t supposed to

say something.

Change A Fiction Story By Sophie Lynch

“Caitlyn, what

did you just say…?” I

asked trembling.

She murmured

something unintelligible

looking down at her

toes.

“Caitlyn, what

did you say?!”

“I said the „D-

word‟…” she muttered.

Dad. My dad ran

away when I was 2. He

abandoned us and left

us with nothing. Took

every trace of him and

ran away in the night.

On my birthday! My

face was getting

warmer and warmer

with rage. It was only

when the grass around

me burst into flames

that I realized I was on

fire.

“Well, it looks

like we‟ve found your

new power,” Caitlyn

sighed snuffing a little

flame on the tip of her

red hair. “And I‟m sorry

about your d- uhh…

about what I said.”

We walked home

and she told me about

the Changing World.

Dear Kamal,

My friend and I are

fighting a lot over

this one guy, and we

haven‟t talked in so

long. She was my

best friend, and I

really miss talking to

her and hanging out

with her. I really

don‟t know what to

do. I really want her

to forgive me so we

can be good friends

again.

I think you should

talk to her about

this and apologize—

which, like all par-

ents say, won‟t make

you the smaller per-

son. Also try sitting

down and talking to

her about what

really upset her. Af-

ter you listen to her

say you‟re very

sorry in a nice man-

ner. By the way,

don‟t forget to tell

her what upset you

after you listen to
