i everyone! We’re almost there!

Spring is just around the corner and I can

tell you, I’m excited. I make no secret of my dis-taste for winter, I try and look on the bright side, but, truth be told, I like the green trees and flowers and long afternoons we enjoy in summer. They’re coming. In the meantime, let’s take a look at what’s going on this month and the people and places we’ll take you to. Our paddler explores the River Oaks area and talks with longtime River Oaks resident Pat Tucker about her part of the lake. Pat is a long-time friend of Lakeside Living and most every-one knows about her devotion to animals and her success as president of the Animal Shelter of Pell City for many years. David will update you on what’s going on with her and the his-tory of the River Oaks development. My cooking buddy Lisa and I had a ball making dog treats, and I think you will, too, they’re super easy and were a big hit with our critters. All the ingredients are people-friendly as well, and rumor has it that Lisa served some to a friend with a little wine get-togeth-er at her house the night after we made them! How about that for a new entertaining mode? You’ll learn about artist Elise Hammond’s new ventures into portraiture and how her lakefront home inspires her work and about Riverside resident Denise Wilson is revamping her home. Then there’s a peek at Pell City’s brand new coffee shop, where you’ll find an outstanding array of gourmet coffees from South America and beyond and where you’ll find great home-made baked goods at the Pell City Coffee Company.

H You’ll learn all you need to know about the upcoming Wild Game Cook-off at Talladega Superspeedway and Lakeside Hospice’s outstanding Tablescapes event coming up. So OK, let’s get started and have another month of looking at all the great things that Lakeside Living brings our way! Happy Valentine’s Day, and from all of us to you. Happy (almost) end of winter!

ith the use of her camera and telephoto lens propped up on a tripod, Elise Hammond often goes onto the deck of

her Logan Martin Lake house looking for things that catch her eye.

The fog is thick this particular day, as Hammond scans the lake and notices a fisherman setting up along the shoreline. She snaps a picture.

A piece of driftwood with what she describes as “neat ridges and lines” peeks above the water. She snaps another.

When she is not busy putting the final touches on her house or preparing art workshops for her students, artist Elise Hammond is either painting or being inspired.

upcoming spring exhibit at the LMo & Co gallery in Talladega.

“We’ve finished just about everything outside except the deck and inside every-thing but the floors and door frames,” Hammond said. “I can close my eyes now and see a room. I can do that now and that helps in making decisions.”

One of her major goals is to generate more art pieces.

“I keep hoping that as there’s less for me to do to the lake house, the more I can start painting,” Hammond said.

Since last year, Hammond has com-pleted 12 paintings and plans to delve more into portraiture.

“If you can paint a portrait you can do anything,” Hammond said.

more portraits.

Hammond said in the case of Gracie and Coco, a portrait commissioned by a family friend, a small girl is pictured in front of the lake with her dog.

Hammond said that such portraits are really fun to do because she has the chal-lenging task of capturing her subject’s per-sonality and body language.

Anything from dogs, horses, cats, exotic birds, and other wildlife can be seen in her many works.

“You have to know anatomy to do a convincing portrait,” Hammond said.

“By focusing on portraits I can round everything out. I’ve done a little bit of this, a little bit of that, so this would bring it all in.”

After beginning a study on the reintro-duction of the red wolf to the southeastern United States, she submitted two paintings

that were selected as winners for the National Wolf Awareness Poster Competition in 1999 and 2007.

“I had submitted two pieces, one was pastel and one was an oil,” Hammond said. “They were used to educate people about the red wolf and grey wolf and release sites. That was very edu-cational. It was fun to study the wolves.”

Hammond said she got to learn about wolves’ body lan-guage and how to capture their distinctive body movements especially under all of their fur.

“Like bony protrusions, it’s real important that those places are captured correctly,” Hammond said. “It’s sort of like a body wearing clothes. You have to make it believable; it has to be right on.

“You can’t fake it. There is nothing to give you any shelter.”And even with a softer subject like children and babies,

Hammond said attention to detail in portraiture is a must.“Everything has to be subtle, it’s like painting petals on a

flower because anything hard can age them,” Hammond said. “Babies and young children and ladies all have that little fatty layer between their bones and their skin.”

However, she says that undoubtedly the most important thing to think about is lighting.

“The right light helps things become more real,” Hammond said. “It gives objects form, that’s why it’s so much fun to come back to a subject and observe it with different lighting and the light can make something ordinary spectacu-lar.”

And making the ordinary spectacular has proved to be her major goal throughout her art career.

As she begins to take on portraiture through a new lens, her old lens on the dock overlooking the lake will still be there, ready to go for the next round of inspiration.

t first glance I thought I was in Florida, not paddling down Logan Martin Lake, part of the Alabama Scenic River Trail – gators!

There were three of those reptile-looking animals sunning on the concrete boat ramp, at least that what’s I thought for the first few seconds.

Riverside. Could there be more gators - at River Oaks?A big smile appeared on Dr. Harold Settle’s face when he

answered his door, and I said the key word - alligators. “They’ve been there eight or nine years,” said Settle, a long-

time River Oaks resident. He started out with one alligator and added two more, an

adult and baby.Of course, there’s no need to worry. These reptiles are pieces of wrought iron works – you could

say they are metal gators. And the gators have turned the heads of many lake travelers

as they slowly passed Dr. Settle’s lakeshore residence – includ-ing me.

“Just this summer, a pontoon boat pulled up very slowly towards them,” Settle said. “I could hear the two older women sitting in the back, ‘Don’t get too close; don’t get too close.’”

One time a man jumped out of his boat and proceeded to poke the iron gators with a stick.

“Fisherman throw lures to see if they will move all the time,” Settle said.

He got the metal gators from a wrought-iron dealer in

Birmingham. It’s been an enjoyable investment. Settle, a cardiologist, sits in his gazebo and watches as people

pass by in boats. Some folks take time for a closer look at his wrought-iron

“gator” pieces.“It just makes me smile,” he said. “It’s entertaining for me.” Settle, who is a serious gardener, has lived in River Oaks for

18 years. He said his home in River Oaks is perfect for growing roses.“It’s a really unique area on the peninsula,” he said. “It’s sur-

rounded by water.”He said being surrounded by water helps to keep the tem-

perature about three to four degrees warmer than on the main-land, and the warmer temperatures help extend the growing season for roses.

“I also have free water,” Settle said. “It’s a wonderful place to grow things…I love living here.”

It’s the tranquility of River Oaks that community neighbors say they enjoy.

“This is a nice, quiet neighborhood,” said Pat Tucker, who allowed me to use her lakeside home as a launching pad for my

most recent kayak adventure. She lives on the other side of the peninsula from Dr. Settle,

but they know each other. “You have the feel of the country here, but you’re only three

miles away from the city (Pell City),” Tucker said. I arrived at Pat’s beautiful estate home on a Saturday morn-

ing, and the weather gods were on my side. Rain was forecast, but the only thing I was showered with

was sun. There was no rain the entire day, which was great. It just

shows you that you can’t always plan your paddling trips according to the weather forecast.

When I arrived at Pat’s that Saturday, I was greeted by Sammie, Scooter, Lucy Loo, Molley Belle, Daisy Olivia, Fancy Faith, Ben and Angelina Grace. Whew. Did I forget anyone?

Oh yeah the two cats, Smudge and Cuddles. I’m sort of used to the greeting of barking dogs, since we have

a pack of dogs ourselves. For people who do not know, Pat led the charge in helping

make the Pell City Animal Shelter a reality. I can remember her going from city to city, and to the county

commission, finalizing contracts that would make it possible to have an animal shelter in St. Clair County. She would go over the construction plan and make her pitch about the desperate need for an animal shelter.

She is an animal lover, no doubt, along with her late husband, Charles.

All her pets, like ours, are strays or shelter animals. Her pets have plenty of room, and they live in a wonderful place – with a beautiful lake view.

I said all my hellos to everyone and even took a picture of a few residents who watched and barked at me behind a glass door to Pat’s home.

I even met a few people! I finally got to meet Pat’s mother, Bertie Aspinwall, her

nephew and his fiancée Chase Rowe and Elizabeth Lawhorn of Blackshear, Ga., and Pat’s friend, Pam Williams, another ASPC volunteer.

This was all before I even started my paddling trip around River Oaks – where wrought-iron gators lurk!

I really thought I was in for some heavy-duty rain that day, but not a drop. The temperature was also perfect, warm.

There were quite a few fishermen on the lake that day, including Marvin Hughes.

Hughes was checking his trotline for fish. He asked me if I was the one who writes the stories about

traveling down the lake in the Lakeside Magazine every month. I guess my long yellow colored kayak gave me away.

I told him, “Yes.”“I read it every month,” he said. Even though the weather was great, the water was still very

cold.“It’s 49 degrees,” Hughes said. “You wouldn’t last long (if you

fell in), hypothermia.”

Page 16: February Lakeside

16 Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - February 2012

He knows. Hughes told me about how he accidentally fell into the frigid

waters one time – and it wasn’t fun. He managed to make it back home and get changed into dry

clothes before freezing to death.I was wearing my wet suit and dry top that day, just in case

I made a mistake and turned my kayak over. You never know, but so far I’ve been lucky. I really worry more about the camera equipment I carry. I’m afraid if I took a spill, the camera equip-ment would be sunk.

I paddled around the point of River Oaks and continued toward the Bell Brook community.

Harmon Island is straight across from River Oaks and this is a popular area for fishermen.

I’ve been told River Oaks was part of the old “Avondale Farm.”

Long-time resident Ren Wheeler, 72, of Pell City, said before the lake was backed up Avondale Mills owned the land in that area, which included a 35-40-acre lake and gristmill. Avondale Mills bought the property from the Waites family.

Wheeler said farmers from across the county would bring their corn to the gristmill, which would crush the corn into cow feed. The better corn was crushed into mill for home cooking.

“The gristmill was a major, major asset to our valley and

county,” Wheeler said. He said Avondale also set up a public swim area on the 35-

40-acre lake, which was fed from a spring and is now under Logan Martin Lake.

Wheeler said the private lake was between Harmon Island and River Oaks. The lake had a roped off swim area, restrooms and showers. There was also a canteen, so people could get something to eat.

“There was a really nice bowling alley there, too,” Wheeler said.

He said Avondale also built a big pump house to carry the spring water to its plant in Pell City and to help supply water to Pell City residents.

“There may have been some wells, too, but that was the main source of water at one time,” Wheeler said.

Once I reached the area across from Bell Brook, I turned my kayak around and headed back to Pat’s.

As soon as I got around the point of River Oaks and into the main river channel, the wind really kicked up, but I didn’t have too far to travel.

It was actually nice paddling back to Pat’s on the main river channel. The sun was dropping and the warmth from the sun really felt good on my face. It was a nice way to finish my adventure, and I look forward to my next trip, so until then have a safe and wonderful time on the lake.

River Oaks has some of the most beautiful homes on the lake.

ne-of-a-kind tables, a scrumptious lunch and an atmo-sphere of fellowship—Love Feeds the Soul at this year’s Tablescapes Fundraiser Luncheon.

“If you’ve never been to a Tablescapes before, you’ve got to come see this—it’s fabulous,” said Christine Smith, public relations director for Lakeside Hospice in Pell City.

The Third Annual Tablescapes Fundraiser Luncheon is from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25 at Beacon Hall at First United Methodist Church in Pell City. The fundraiser benefits Lakeside Hospice and the Christian Love Pantry.

Smith said Carla Cothran, a volunteer for both Lakeside Hospice and the Christian Love Pantry, came up with the idea of bringing Tablescapes to Pell City three years ago.

“We had about 30-35 tables the first year, I think 37 tables last year and we are hoping for 40 tables this year,” she said.

Each table seats eight, and each is uniquely decorated with

either a creative or a traditional theme. Table cost is $200, and individual tickets are $25.

“The table can be as elaborate or as simple as you want,” she said. “We had a lady who did a beach theme and her table had paper plates, lawn chairs, plastic floaties and even a grill for hotdogs and a radio. Another lady did a stuffed animals theme.”

Smith said traditional tables feature delicate and intricate ideas.

“Some even decorate the chairs,” she said.Smith said tables and chairs are provided.“You provide your own dishes, fine china, tablecloth, sil-

verware, napkins, centerpiece, cups, candles and everything to decorate your table,” she said.

Smith said many businesses will decorate the table with a theme to fit their business.

“It’s a great way to advertise your business,” she said.Smith said each attendee gets to vote for their favorite cre-

“We have people who love to decorate, but don’t want to sell tickets, or want to sell tickets but not decorate a table,” she said. “If you want to do one or the other, but not both, call us and we can get that arranged.”

Smith said last year’s event raised almost $10,000.“We are hoping to exceed that this year,” she said.Smith said this year’s Tablescapes will feature guest

Pell City Coffee Company brings an array of treats for the tastebuds

All Kinds of Coffee and So Much More

rom the gathering places for pre-revolutionary colonials to the beat generation of the 1950s, to the age of free wi-fi today, the coffee house has always been a vital, integral part of the American culture.

For about a month as this goes to press, the Pell City Coffee Company has brought the tradition to its namesake on

U.S. 231, just south of the post office.Co-owners Tommy Barrows and his mother, Brenda,

opened up shop with no particular background in the food industry. But he has a long history as a coffee aficionado, and a sweet tooth.

“When I was a toddler, my great aunts would slip and give

me coffee,” he explained. “We moved to Pell City when I was 2, and they said ‘poor lil’ Tommy won’t get any more coffee. Well, I guess I was hooked because I’ve loved it ever since,” he explained. That was 35 years ago. The family originally hails from Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia. ”Growing up in Pell City was a great experience,” he explained. “I loved going to the Dairy Queen each week for desserts. After they closed, there hasn’t been a place to sit and have dessert or a good cup of coffee.”

There is now. “The lattes, cappuccinos and frappes (frozen espresso

drinks) are our specialty,” Barrows said. “We have almost 30 flavors to add to your drinks, with over half of those available in sugar free. The hot chocolate is also very popular, even the sugar free version.”

And of course, man does not live on coffee alone, at least not after he graduates from college.

“We bake fresh every day, an assortment of muffins, cupcakes, cinnamon rolls, fudge and pumpkin rolls. We also

feature hand-dipped Blue Bell ice cream in a cone, a bowl or even in a milkshake,” Barrows said.

Pell City Coffee Company is very much a family affair, involving three generations altogeth-er, he continued.

“With so much to offer, from sweets to espresso, we appeal to all ages,” he said. “I am a single father of two boys (Tyler and Josh), ages 15 and 16. The shop ‘family business’ offers us a great opportunity to spend the last few years at home together before they leave for college.”

Other items on the menu include brewed coffee, chai and smoothies. According to their Facebook page, featured coffees include Guatemala Antigua Bella Carmona decaf, Tanzanian peaberry, Brazilian Santos Cerrado Oberon, Indian monsoon Malabar and espresso Kaldi blend.

The decaf is described as “carefully cultivated

Arabica from the volcanic highlands of Guatemala Antigua. It’s superbly aromatic, rich, lively and full of flavor, yet very heavy bodied with bright acidity.”

The peaberry “is formed from a single seed rather than the typical two developed at the heart of the bean. Tanzanian peaberry is an African coffee characterized by its sharp, winy acidity, medium body and moderately rich flavor.”

The Oberon is “the highest grade coffee that Brazil pro-duces, (with) a smooth flavor, medium body and moderate acidity.” The Indian coffee “gets its name from an aging process where the beans are exposed to the humid monsoon winds. Just

after a few weeks of exposure, the coffee flavors transform to become richer and smoother. Malabar is full-bodied and has very low acidity, with a spicy woody flavor.” The espresso is described as “the perfect ending to a memo-rable meal or festive gathering. Our custom blend of specialty coffees from Latin America and Africa make a great tasting espresso with the perfect crema on top.” The Pell City Coffee Company is open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

t started across the street. She saw the vibrant van coated in yellow – Alabama Remodeling written across the side. Denise Wilson

saw the work contractor Matt White did for her neighbor and she liked it.

“So we moved from here to there,” White says, standing in Wilson’s home and pointing across the street. The owner of Alabama Remodeling and Plumbing, White says he likes to focus his renovation projects on lake homes.

So it began with a simple plan – just updating the kitchen by adding backsplash and adding new tile to the floors. Then Wilson says it was like a snowball effect. She realized she’d like the bathrooms to be updated, she’d always wanted a bigger master bedroom closet, the water heater was obstructing could-be storage space and the living room could use new paint.

“It’s an ongoing project,” Wilson said. For now, the kitchen, master bathroom and bedroom, laundry room and upstairs bath have all been renovated.

Wilson has lived in the Riverside community for five years. Her three bedroom, three bath home was built in 1987 and when she first moved in, she did some small renovation proj-ects. She placed granite countertops in the kitchen and added hardwood and

I

Page 28: February Lakeside

28 Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - February 2012

carpet throughout the home. She also did some painting and replaced a few windows. Now, she’s tackling larger projects so she can “enjoy it while I’m here.”In the living room, the walls were repainted, a handrail was added to the stairs, the mantel was painted white and crown mold-

ing was added. The hot water heater was moved to the garage and the garage was painted. The space previously storing the hot water heater now is used as a laundry room.

Perhaps what Wilson loves most in this stage of the renovation project is her new closet. “The way it was my bedroom door was down near the backside of the house,” Wilson said. “Then that led to a small bath-

room. My bedroom was the width of the house. Then he (White) added this door near the front door. So we made my bedroom shorter and added a larger bathroom and a bigger closet.”

Wilson gives White the credit for most of the creative ideas. “A lot have been his,” she says. “We just sort of discussed things together. He’s had fabulous ideas. A lot of them are his.”

The tile shower includes a seat and adjustable shower head.

White and his team have been working on Wilson’s renova-tions since the beginning of October 2011. White said often his customers will ask him to draw out a preliminary design before renovations begin.

“I usually have to say no because really ideas come to me as I go,” he said. “Once I get in there and get everything gutted then the fun begins and ideas come to me.”

White gave Wilson’s neighbors’ remodeled bathroom as an example. Rocks were individually hand placed to create a mod-ern look for the updated bathtub.

“That was probably the prettiest, most advanced project I’ve ever done,” White said. “We had to hand-place those rocks one by one. It turned out absolutely awesome. That project was one that came to me.”

White has been remodeling for nearly 17 years and for the last three, he’s had his sidekick, Madison with him. Like her father, Madison likes to drink coffee when she’s up early in the morning on a job site. She’s also taken a liking to ‘Ms. Denise.’

Madison has a little while longer to hang out with Ms. Denise since White and his team are currently still working on the dock, the sunroom and the patio.

The sunroom is getting a new roof to replace the low ceil-

ing the previous one supported. “We’re going to tear off the deck and have a slate rock

patio so the back of the house and the dock are also going to be transformed,” Wilson said.

When the second phase of renovations is finished, perhaps Wilson will feel the need to remodel the two upstairs bed-rooms – just about the only rooms the Alabama Remodeling hasn’t touched.

A bedroom is decorated in relaxing earth tones.

These Valentine’s Treats, great for people too!

TreatYour Pets!

hen most of us start thinking about Valentine’s Day treats, we’re thinking Godiva, maybe Russell Stover or perhaps a yummy chunk of red velvet cake.

These are all things two-legged creatures love, but what about our four footed friends?

Being the critter lovers we are, (Lisa and myself) and know-ing that so many of you are, we ventured into untried territory this month, deciding to create some great treats for the ones who love us no matter what.

Those being our dogs, and our taste testers, Lisa’s pair of pets, Buddy Lee Baggett and Bella Linda Baggett.

Buddy Lee, a cocker spaniel and the best dog in the whole world according to me, and Bella Linda, were the perfect pups to work with. They’re both pretty low key and after an initial greeting with a little barking, they settle down and are happy just chilling out.

My three canines were totally out of the question as far as a taste test and photo shoot.

Let me explain.Of course, I love them, but here’s how it goes.Scoot, the Border Collie, doesn’t realize that he’s practically

the size of a Shetland Pony and wants to shake, rattle and roll with everyone he meets. Then there’s the herding thing, which most people don’t enjoy.

Next is Pup, the Feist, and if you know anything at all about this breed of dog you know there’s no stopping them from doing exactly what they want when they want. She’s a conniver, knows how to start trouble, then turns tail and tries to act all innocent.

She’s way too smart. I keep threatening to take her to Paws in the Park and turn her loose and let one of those nice Animal Shelter of Pell City ladies take her home.

OK, I think I can sum up why Taco isn’t a candidate in just one word.

She’s a Chihuahua.I’m sure you get it.

W

These may look like traditional Valentine’s Day treats for people, but they’re actually special recipes for dog treats.

All the ingredients are people friendly, though.

So, OK, this was a first time try for both of us, making dog treats that is, and all I can tell you is it went great!

Don’t be afraid to try it. If I can do a recipe first time ever without trouble, anyone in the world can.

But I know Lisa gave me the easiest one, she knows me that well.

We had three batches of treats made up within an hour, no mishaps, no foul ups, it was great!

Oh, we did get some doggie cookie cutters, we had bones and fire hydrants and heart shapes. I will tell you that the fire hydrants are a little difficult to work with, their design is more intricate and your “dough” has to be firmer than the ones we mixed up.

And oh yeah, credit where credit is due. We found our recipes in the book “Dog Treat Cookbook,” put together by Liz Palika.

Let’s start with mine, the “Cheesy Chicken Delights.” What you need:

(I doubled this recipe and got about 40 treats. Some I cut

with the heart shaped cookie cutter, some I just rolled into

balls as the recipe suggests).

One 7.75-ounce package of Bisquick Complete Three Cheese

Biscuit mix (Couldn’t find it, so I used regular Bisquick and

guessed on the amount, judging by consistency-probably

about a cup and a half per batch).

One half-cup pre-cooked chicken (I used canned).

One-fourth cup grated cheddar cheese.

One half-cup water.

What you do:Pre-heat oven to 350. Simply mix all ingredients into a

(sticky) dough. And it really is sticky.Drop by teaspoonfuls onto cookie sheets sprayed with

non-stick spray.Bake for 10 to 15 minutes or until golden brown. I found it

takes more like the full 15 minutes to get them right, but your oven will tell you when they’re done.

(These were a huge hit! And when I got home with them, my cats tore into them before I knew it!)

Peanut Butter, Honey and Oat CookiesWhat you need:

One-cup crunchy or even extra crunchy peanut butter

These Cheesy Chicken Delights were Laura’s recipe to make.

Three cups quick oats (oatmeal)

One-third cup honey

One-third cup low sodium chicken or beef bouillon powder (We

used cubes and it was fine!)

One-third cup warm water

What you do:Preheat oven to 350Warm peanut butter in the microwave for about one min-

ute, until it’s soft enough to mix with the other ingredients.Grind two cups of oats in a food processor or a blender

until you have a coarse flour.Mix all ingredients together in a large mixing bowl.Drop the dough onto a breadboard sprinkled with flour or

more oats. Work the dough on the board until you can make a ball. Then, roll the dough to a thickness of about a quarter inch.

Use a three-inch dog bone shaped cookie cutter to cut the dough into shapes.

Place cut out cookies on greased or sprayed cookie sheets. (The dough will be a little soft and crumbly so transfer the cut out shapes gently!)

Bake for about 10 minutes or until the bottoms of the

cookies are nice and golden brown.Remove from oven, let cool thoroughly and store in an air-

tight container.Peanut Butter-Honey Nut Cheerios Balls

Note: These cookies are soft and slightly crumbly, and they smell wonderfully peanutty! The Cheerios add a unique texture and taste to these cookies. Makes 50 to 60 bite sized treats. What you need:

One-fourth cup natural peanut butter, creamy or chunky (We

used chunky).

Two cups Honey Nut Cheerios

One cup all purpose flour

One-half cup vegetable oil

Two large eggs

What you do: Preheat oven to 350Warm peanut butter in the microwave for about one min-

ute, until it’s soft enough to mix with the other ingredients.Add the rest of the ingredients to the peanut butter, and

mix gently, but thoroughly.

A platter of pretty puppy treats suitable for any canine occasion.

Page 41: February Lakeside

February 2012 - Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes 41

Form rounded teaspoons of the dough into balls, squeezing each ball in your hand to press it all together. This helps reduce some of the crumbling while baking.

Place on greased or sprayed cookie sheets.

Bake for eight to 10 minutes or until the bottoms are golden brown.

Remove from oven, let cool thoroughly and store in an airtight container.

Well, alrighty then! We hope you enjoy making your pets some special treats for Valentine’s Day and also throughout the year. As far as ours go, they were a huge hit and oh, so easy!

And guess what else? We tasted them and they make pretty good people treats as well!

Next month, we plan to bring you our favorite appetizers…or maybe brunch ideas! We haven’t decided which yet, time will tell!

Until then, hope you have fun making these treats for your four footed friends! They’re so simple, they would make great projects for the kids!

Above: Laura gives Lisa’s dogs, Bella Linda Baggett and Buddy Lee Baggett a treat in the

back yard.

Whether you’re making them for your own pups or as a gift for someone else’s, we think

you’ll be happy with the results. At right, Laura and Lisa take a break with Buddy Lee

and Bella after the cooking session.

eal estate gives Kim Vernon the ability to be there for those who need her most, whether it’s custom-ers or her own family.

Vernon, who works with St. Clair Hometown Properties, Inc., said she loves being part of one of the big-gest decisions people will make.

“Truthfully, I love talking to people and helping them make that decision,” Vernon said. “It’s such an important matter, and it’s something they might only do once in their life.”

Vernon transitioned to real estate about eight years ago after a career in various fields of finance. In the financial world since she was 18, Vernon gained experience in “a little bit of everything,” including banking, mortgage and retail.

“Being a realtor, you experience a totally differ-ent side of business,” Vernon said. “I actually get to show properties and help people as opposed to just handling the paperwork. Some aspects are challenging, but as a whole, I absolutely love it.”

Mother of two children, Jacob, 17, and Taylor, 13, Vernon said she initially chose real estate for its flexible hours.

“At the time, my children were small, and I wanted to be in the Pell City area and be able to take care of them,” Vernon said. “Real estate allows me to be there for them

and still do something I enjoy.”Vernon said her secret to success is letting the cus-

tomer take the lead.“I listen to what they describe, and I don’t force any-

thing on them,” she said. “I just let them lead and try to find a property that matches what they want.”

Pell City property is unique because it’s full of vari-ety, Vernon said.

“This area offers something in every price range,” she said. “From small, inexpensive homes to larger, expensive property, there is a great variety of available homes.”

The lake is an added bonus for buyers, who often use lakefront property for mini-vacations, she said.

“It’s close enough to Birmingham and Atlanta that people have the opportunity to visit more often,” Vernon said. “They can decide on a Friday afternoon to come for the weekend, which they couldn’t do if they were going to the beach or the mountains. It’s there whenever they want it.”

The payoff for months of work is having a satisfied customer, Vernon said.

“When a buyer finds the home of their dreams, it makes me happy to know that I was a part of it,” she said.

rom deer chili to Mexican Mallard to crab-stuffed salmon and Creole bear—the Seventh Annual Alabama Army National Guard/Alabama Wildlife Federation Wild Game Cook-off at the Talladega Superspeedway has it all.

“We are anticipating a really big turnout this year,” said Tommy Tidwell, Wild Game Cook-off Coordinator for the Alabama Wildlife Federation. “This year is a special occasion. The Talladega Superspeedway has been really good to us and this year the first 40 teams to sign up and pre-register will get four tickets per team to the spring race at the Superspeedway.”

The Seventh Annual Alabama Army National Guard/Alabama Wildlife Federation Wild Game Cook-off is Saturday, Feb. 11. The cook-off takes place in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Garage. Gates open at 2:45 p.m. Track rides, available at a cost of $50 to the first 150 people who purchase their cook-off tickets in advance, are from 2:45-4:30 p.m.

Entry for the cook teams is free. Cook teams must pre-register by 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9 to qualify for the race tickets. Cook teams may still sign up to participate until the day of the event.

“I anticipate that the winners from last year will be here again,” Tidwell said. “There is going to be some talent at the cook-off—no doubt. At least one former state champion is going to compete this year.”

The cook-off starts at 4 p.m., with awards presented to the winners at 6 p.m. The event features live entertainment, raffles, youth activities and a silent auction that includes wildlife prints, sports prints including Auburn and Alabama, gift-type items, hunting and fishing trips with celebrities, items geared towards outdoor enthusiasts, ladies items and more. All proceeds benefit the Alabama Wildlife Federation.

“This event usually raises close to $20,000,” he said. “The money goes into conservation programs throughout the state.”

Cooking teams may include groups, a couple or a single individual. A team may represent a corporation, restaurant or

simply be a local cook. Teams may have up to four members, and all four members will receive a one-year complimentary AWF membership.

“Wild Game” is defined as fish, fowl or game that can be found in the wild of North America.

Trophies are awarded for first, second and third place in three categories: fish, fowl and game. There is also an award for “Best Overall.”

Teams may enter up to one dish in each regular category, but a single team can only win first place in one category. If a team’s highest scoring dish wins one of the three categories, it is in the running for “Best Overall.”

The award for “Best Overall” will go to the cook team with the highest scoring individual dish, judged on taste and originality with taste weighed more heavily. The “Best Overall” winner earns the right to compete for the title “State Champion” at AWF head-quarters in Millbrook at the end of the season.

Teams are asked to provide samples for up to four judges and to provide people attending the cook-off with at least 50-75 bite-size samples of any dish entered into the judging competi-tion.

A “Best Presentation Award” will go to the cook team with the best decorations and presentation for their cook team area that best reflects the atmosphere of a “Wild Game” cook-off. Scoring is separate from and has no impact on dishes submitted to the food judges.

The Alabama Army National Guard is the title sponsor and will award a special “People’s Choice” award, which is voted on by the general public.

Cook-off teams are responsible for bringing items, if necessary for their entry, such as a grill, smoker or other cook-ing device, warmer such as a large pot or chafing dish with heat source, charcoal/propane or other fuel and matches, small genera-tor, serving utensils and chairs and additional tables if needed.
