F E B R U A R Y / 2 0 1 3L E A D E R S H I PTechnology and Learning Faculty Conference: Transforming the Way We TeachOn Wednesday, February 13, 2013, nearly 90
people representing all Pepperdine schools at-
tended the 2013 Technology and Learning Fac-
ulty Conference at the West Los Angeles Cam-
pus (WLA). This half-day conference showcased
Pepperdine’s own faculty sharing their experi-
ences using technology to enhance learning in
their classrooms.
Pepperdine faculty speakers included Dr. Jim
DiLellio, Graziadio School; Dr. Stella Erbes, Seav-
er College; Dr. Charla Griffy-Brown, Graziadio School; Dr. Owen Hall, Jr., Graziadio School; Dr. Doug Leigh,
GSEP; Dr. Bob McQuaid, Graziadio School; Dr. Margaret Riel, GSEP; Dr. Milt Shatzer, Seaver College; and
Dr. Robert Williams, Seaver College. Cognitive psychologist Michelle D. Miller, Ph.D., from Northern Arizona
University, who specializes in memory and memory encoding was the keynote speaker.
Topics ranged from exploring the realm of learner analytics and examining what determines student suc-
cess; canvassing the benefits of strategic faculty alliances across the globe; to demonstrations of specific
technologies that are currently available to faculty to use in their teaching.
“I attended all the hands-on sessions,” said a faculty attendee. “They helped me to understand
how I can use the technology to enhance or supplement my classes.”
“Interaction with other faculty was most valuable,” said another faculty participant. “I suggest more time
between sessions for those conversations.”

Transforming Learning Spaces
Steelcase, a company that designs furniture that promotes a more collaborative learning en-
vironment for faculty and students, was invited to showcase some of its furniture at the confer-
ence. Steelcase placed a Media:Scape unit in the library area of the WLA campus. The unit was
equipped with a high definition monitor and easy connectors for students to plug in and quickly
share content. The technology incorporated in the furniture and its U-shaped table make it useful
for group projects, presentations, or homework assignments. The images below show the Steel-
case furniture being used by a visiting group of students and their teacher.
Steelcase also transformed one of the conference meeting rooms with the collaborative fur-
niture. Faculty attendees got to experience the classroom setting with the moveable furniture
first-hand.
The furniture recieved mixed reviews from faculty. Some saw the furniture’s collaborative poten-
tial while others did not.
“I think it would be useful to have at least one classroom in each Seaver division that is equipped
with the Steelcase furniture.” - Faculty attendee
“The Steelcase furniture seems comfortable. Not sure it is that much better than whatwe now
have.” - Faculty attendee

ISO Partners with HR to Host Data Security Training Sessions for Faculty and Staff
In February, the Information Security Office (ISO)
partnered with Human Resources to host data secu-
rity skills training sessions for Pepperdine faculty and
staff.
The well-attended sessions covered data security
best practices at the University as well as provided
updated information on external compliance re-
quirements, University policy and new resources to
solve departmental information security challenges.
In March, ISO will partner with Finance to host the annual Information Security Briefings for Manag-
ers. To view the schedule and to sign up for a session, please visit Information Technology’s Training
Calendar at http://community.pepperdine.edu/it/about/events/
If you have questions about these meetings, please contact ISO at [email protected].
EIS Increases Efforts to Safeguard Restricted Data at PepperdineTeam members of the Enterprise Information Systems (EIS) department includ-
ing project leads Ryan Kim and Lisa Welch along with Rinn Dow, Kai Markow-
itz, and Carly Struna worked with the admissions offices from all five schools;
Seaver Financial Aid; and University Registrar to help better secure restricted
data at the University.
Secure File Upload Tool for PeopleSoft
The team helped implement a secure file upload tool, which allows staff to upload applications,
FAFSA records, test score records, and financial aid-related files into PeopleSoft. Prior to this tool, files
were stored on departmental shared drives for processing in PeopleSoft; this method of storing data
was not secure. This new process eliminates the need for files to be stored and accessed from shared
drives.
Removal of SSNs from Duplicate ID Reports
The EIS team also modified the Duplicate ID Report to exclude social security numbers from the
report and identify SSN matches via other means, thereby preserving the report’s utility. This report,
which is run monthly by the University Registrar’s office, identifies potential duplicate records in the
PeopleSoft Student Administration system and is shared with all schools for them to analyze and rec-
oncile as needed.

The Number to Access Voicemail has ChangedD I D Y O U K N O W . . . ?
IT staff have completely migrated the entire University to the new collaborative Cisco platform. Due
to this migration there is now a new number/extension for the University’s voicemail system.
The new number to access the Pepperdine voicemail system is 1(310) 506-4002 or ext. 4002.
If your phone has a symbol of an envelope just press the envelope to access your voicemail. No
setup is required. All voicemail data has been transferred to the new system. The old voicemail

Professor Linda Purrington Joins the Faculty Professional Development Program
On Monday, February 25 the Technology and Learning group began hosting a six-week faculty
professional development program with the help of Professor Linda Purrington from the Graduate
School of Education and Psychology. This year’s program will be held online in combination with
face-to-face meetings. This design is to help faculty gain more comfort teaching in a blended/hy-
brid enviroment while allowing attendees to learn at their own pace.
Prof. Purrington, who has taugh in blended/hybrid environments before, will teach participants how
to transform face-to-face activities into an online format; how to use instructional technology such
as Google Docs and Blackboard Collaborate; and how to integrate these technologies into the
faculty’s own teaching style.
Faculty who attend all of the sessions and complete the program can earn a $250 stipend to go
toward technology that will help them teach online. To learn more about the Faculty Development
Program, please visit http://community.pepperdine.edu/techlearn/teaching/faculty-professional-

Faculty and Staff Experience the Convenience of the Remote Support Tool
In November 2012, IT introduced a new tool called the Remote Sup-
port Tool, which allows IT staff to easily assist faculty and staff with
technical requests remotely. So far the tool has been well received
by the community.
IT technology liaison Jason Eggleston helped Dr. Mason Marshall of
Seaver College with an unexpected computer problem right before
he had to leave for a conference.
“The Remote Support Tool is extremely helpful. I hope very much that Pepperdine
will keep it,” said Dr. Marshall. “ When Jason used it for me the other day, I had only
minutes left before I had to leave for the airport, headed to a conference to present
a paper. If the problem on my computer hadn’t been solved, I would have been in bad
shape. Jason deserves the highest praise -- across the board (and not just with regard to the Re-
mote Support Tool). ”
EIS team member Rinn Dow was able to quickly and effectively assist Christell Neal of Student
Services at the Graduate School of Education and Psychology without either of them leaving their
desks.
“The tool is an easy way for IT to help and see what the problem is right away,” said Christell Neal.
The remote support tool can be used for other instances such as training and making presentations.
However, the tool proves to be effective in providing timely and efficient technology support the
community. To learn more about the Remote Support Tool, please visit http://community.pepper-
dine.edu/it/tools/remotesupport/remotesupport.htm
